    Hi,
Is there any way at all that my 700 MHz iBook G3 will run 10.5? Thank you!

No. Sorry. Not even all Macs with G4 processors will run Leopard. No G3 processor is up to the task.

  • Leopard on iBook 600 MHz PowerPC G3

Is it possible to run a iBook 600 MHz PowerPC G3 with 640 MB SDRAM with Leopard??? And if so, because some of you jokers will say yes, how do I do it???
    Cheers,
    Johan

That would be better taken up on a different web site, since detailing ways around Apple's installer restrictions are iffy per the terms of the Discussions. If you search the web for something like "leopard install unsupported", you'll come across a number of pages of discussion about the issue.

  • Can I install Tiger in a Dual 500 MHz PowerPC G4?

Can I install Tiger in a Dual 500 MHz PowerPC G4, or is it better to stick with 10.3.9? I'm having some problems so I was going to wipe he hard drive and re-build everything from scratch o I was wondering if migrating to OS X 10.4.9 is worthwhile or even compatible with this PCU. Thanks.

Yes you can run 10.4 on your dual 500, I have a dual 450 (I overclocked it to 550...) and it runs pretty fast. You need a minimum 192 MB of RAM to install it and a minimum 128 MB of RAM to run it. I would suggest having at least 512 MB of RAM when running 10.4.
What problems are you experiencing? If it's just lagging and seeming slow it may just be worthwhile to clean some temp files and clean up your disk. IMHO, 10.4 is a much better system than 10.3, and runs much smoother. I can guarantee you that your system will run much smoother if you wipe the disk clean and put a fresh install of 10.4 on there, and also get a decent amount of RAM in there. After I upgraded my RAM to 1.5 GB, I noticed a substantial difference in speed, and got a lot less spinning color wheels. But one thing that you need to always keep in mind is to KEEP YOUR DISK CLEAN!!! Clean the temp files often and limit your internet downloading. If you keep your computer on all of the time, restart it every once in a while. There's a lot of little things you can do to increase speed in OS 10.4. Use spotlight and recent applications. Fill up your dock. Don't clutter the desktop, etc. There's plenty of articles on the net to help increase speed without adding anything else to your system, just navigating through the OS differently.

  • Finally going wireless -- 2002 14" iBook 700 MHz

I purchased an iBook in May 2002, 14" runs at 700 MHz, and would now like to finally go wireless. What are the best options to make this happen?
    Thanks

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
The best, most elegant, and most fiddle-free way to go wireless is with the Apple original AirPort Card, which installs inside the iBook.
Some possible sources for the original AirPort card:
    http://store.airportcardsdirect.com/
    http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=10061
    http://www.megamacs.com/v1/?action=view&pid=967052
    http://techrestore.com/xcart/product.php?productid=16174&cat=0
Please note that the link Anne gave is for a 2-pack of the AirPort card.
Apple's instructions for installing the original AirPort card can be found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=111919
A caution: do not try to use the newer AirPort Extreme card. It is incompatible, and attempting to install it can damage the logic board of the iBook.
    You're gonna love wireless connectivity!

  • Restore iBook 700 mhz?

I have a completely dead G3 iBook. 12 inch Dual USB 700 MHZ With Fire Wire, and it is White. It looks almost identical to the White 1.33 ghz iBook G4 I have. (if this helps you figure out which dead G3 iBook I am talking about)
I got it on ebay for the purpose of Mac OS 9.2.2 as the primary OS and I want to boot from that OS.
The listing said that it has Mac OS 9 on it.
When I started it, it had OS X Tiger "Welcome and Setup" with no Mac OS 9 at all.
I was familiar with the Copy The Mac OS 9 System Folder(s) but I must have done that wrong. The next thing that happened was the Blinking Question Mark Of Death.
BEFORE YOU READ MORE, you might want to know my question, which is: I need a Mac OS 9 Install CD. But these are getting impossible to find, so I want to expand my search. Can I include Restore CDs that have Mac OS 9 on them? What if they are for example Power Mac G4? I have seen compatibility charts with these Restore Discs, AND I know it is not recommended, but I have purchased a Tiger Restore DVD for a G4, and the listing said it is compatible with ETC. including a Blue & White G3, a imac G3 Slot, which installed successfully. The iMac installation I can't remember but I think I installed it through Fire Wire by connecting a Desktop DVD Player to a Fire Wire Adapter (which I don't have the adapter anymore) So ... Will the wrong Mac OS 9 Restore CD absolutely not work?  I can't find my Mac OS 9 Installation CD or my Mac OS 9 Restore CD (which is grey and says "iBook" on it, presumably for a Clam Shell) BUT I still have my Tiger G4 Restore DVD. Is it possible to boot from a Fire Wire DVD Drive to the ibook g3 so I can install Tiger on it? Or even to try to select a Startup Volume? And, even if I can successfully install Tiger to the dead iBook, ... How would I install Mas OS 9?
Here are the rest of the details if you need them:
Booting while pressing OPTION revealed no Startup Folder for Mac OS 9 or Tiger.
I connected a Fire Wire from the dead ibook to a 366 mhz Clam Shell with 9.2.2 and successfully loaded Target Disk Mode. Both Startup Folders for the "External" hard drive appeared. Selecting either resulted in the Blinking Question Mark Of Death.
I then deleted Mac OS 9 on the dead ibook and then recopied it. When I disconnected the Fire Wire this time, I got the other Blinking Question Mark Of Death, on a diskette with no purple folder. Pressing OPTION revealed no internal startup disk, but instead it displayed the ClamShell's startup disk!
I am not sure how "Install Mac OS 9 Drivers" work, but perhaps the person I bought it from may not have selected Install Mac OS 9 Drivers. I am not sure what they did, or how they were able to install Tiger, because this iBook only has a CD not a DVD drive. I decided to worry about Tiger later and so I erased the drive using Mac OS 9.2.2's "Erase Disk" and selected "Extended". I then copied the folders, beginning with System Folder, then Application Folder, Then Users, Then Documents,
Still connected to the Clam Shell with Target Disk Mode, I opened Startup Disk again and the Mac OS 9.2.2 appeared with the name of the "external" hard drive. This time I booted successfully from it, although it was through the Clam Shell.
I tried to boot the dead iBook, but the same Blinking Question Mark Diskette Of Death appeared.
I selected OPTION. And the name of the dead iBook's hard drive appeared.
It still displays the Blinking Question Of Death.
I have tried everything else. I have disconnected the power and the battery. There is no reset button so I tried COMMAND OPTION P R, SHIFT OPTION CONTROL POWER, and even COMMAND OPTION OPEN FIRMWARE reset-all.
I asked on another website and they suggested I just use Target Disk Mode and a cloning software to clone a hard drive to the dead ibook. The only Mac OS X that I have is still on an imac G3 which has a CRT Monitor. It has 1 GB RAM but only 400 mhz. When plugging in the imac I think the CRT Monitor Voltage zapped the ibook hard drive to oblivion. Because now the
dead ibook g3 won't appear on Target Disk Mode connected to any computer, using either OS 9 or Tiger.
I can still press OPTION which still displays an available startup volume on the internal ibook hard drive. but clicking the --> continues to do nothing except still show the Blinking Question Mark Diskette Of Death.
Am I handling the OPTION wrong? Do I need to actually click on the icon before pressing the --> ?
Should I get a Fire Wire adapter to boot the DVD? Will using the wrong Restore Disc make things even worse? Does Target Disk Mode not working anymore mean that the hard drive is zapped?

One of the first things regarding an eBay purchase that appears to be not as represented by the seller, is to contact the seller to inquire about such things which are not as they were said; since this detracts from the value of the purchase.
System discs, original software, restore discs, and official copies of the media which represents the license to have and use the OS materials on the computer hard disk drive, should be included.
    {To get copies of OS 9.1/9.2, etc can be difficult, and the original gray label discs had the correct content. Some could be used, but not recommended, since certain drivers for hardware could be lacking, and other regions of error may result.}
There are a few great places online to buy a repaired, restored, &/or refurbished Apple portable computer, with a limited guaranty, from companies who repair them for a living. Without the risk of an auction seller who does not know the equipment, its real condition (or does not specify, etc) and with the buyer getting a fair value. And those would include an OS & system backup on DVD media; plus a power adapter, battery, etc.
So at this hour (2AM here) I will not address your questions; I do hope that some of the Community (of Apple users who reply to these posts) will see the iBook section and offer some tangible advice. There are at least three posts in this vintage area that have a similar theme; need software to use the computer that was just bought.
At a more reasonable hour, I may be able to look back into this.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Should I install iPhoto 5 on my 400 MHz G3?

    I have a slot-loading iMac, G3, 400 MHz, with 576K RAM. I've just installed Tiger (10.4.3) on it and it's running well.
I use iPhoto 2 extensively but its sluggishness when the library reaches 2000 photos or so is an annoyance.
I've been led to believe that a later version will give us better performance in iPhoto. I don't care about the other apps in iLife.
I can't go all the way to iLife '06 because it requires a G4.
I've read that some of the photo-editing capabilities in iPhoto 5 require a G4.
    My questions:
    (1) Would iPhoto 5 work acceptably on my machine?
    (2) What advantages would it have over iPhoto 4?
    (3) Would iPhoto 4 be a better choice for this machine?
    iMac DV (slot-loading) 400 Mhz Mac OS X (10.4.3)

You might want to try iPhoto Buddy to make smaller libraries first. I don't remember 2 all that well and went straight to the 5 series. The editing is a bit stronger in 5 and there's some smart sorting features that make life a bit easier.
It's a tough call. I use Photoshop Elements on my G3.

  • Connecting ibook 500 Mhz running Tiger 10.4.4 to Power MacIntosh 9500/132

I had a cable plugged into the side of my ibook (500-MHz PowerPC G3 processor) in the slot <...> and then into my Power MacIntosh 9500/132 in its slot <...>
I then selected chooser in the apple menu and could access files and software from each machine, allowing me to operate between the two macs to put together my community newsletter.
I upgraded my ibook which now runs Tiger 10.4.4( which is great) but I can no longer connect to my Power Macintosh which has all my software for the newsletter.
    Can any one help.
    Thank you
iBook 500-MHz PowerPC G3 processor   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Upgraded to 576 MB SDRAM

I'm not familiar with the Power Mac 9500. Is that in
    OS 9?
If it is, have you retained OS 9 boot capability on
the iBook? If so, you may have to use it. If not, you
may have to put it back on.
Which OS were you using on the iBook before you
    upgraded to 10.4.4?
You may get some better ideas if you post in the
    forum for pre-G3 desktops:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=602
My Power Macintosh 9500/132 uses Mac OS 9.
My iBook original came with MAC OS 9.0.4, and MAC OS 10.0.1, when I upgraded to Tiger 10.4.4 the classic environment disappearred.
I still have my MAC OS 9 discs, but if I reinstall them won't I loose everything I have installed with MAC OS 10.4.4?

  • How to reinstall bootable system 9 in a iBook G3/900 900 MHz PowerPC 750fx

Hi all, I have two machines bootable with OSX and OS9
PowerPC G4/1.25 DP (Mirrored Drive Doors) dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC 7455 (G4)
    and
    iBook G3/900 900 MHz PowerPC 750fx (G3)
I have some MACOS9 software which just doesn't work in classic mode with any OSX
I got the system disks stolen while travelling. Any Panther or Tiger will install easily in the OSXC partitions I have, the machines, there is some kind of soft lock preventing the regular OS9 system Software disks to install in the OS9 parts of the my drives- So I am now unable to reinstal and booth from system 9.
I tried it all partioning the HD, leaving it as is .... but nothing happens. As soon as I insert any System 9 install disk the computer rejects it telling me is not for that machine, and booting from CD is not happening either with a similar message.
I am unable to locate reploacement disks anywhere and Apple here in Taiwan is silent on this matter, what to do?
    Thanks

    iBook G3/900 900 MHz PowerPC 750fx (G3)   Mac OS 9.2.x   dual Boot

You need the Restore CD's that came with the iBook.
If you are unable to obtain them from Apple there, you may need to call Apple Customer Relations in California and see if they can send you the CD's. If they have them available, they usually will send them to you (for a fee).
The number there is (408) 996-1010. Call between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time, and be sure to ask for Customer Relations.
Once you have the CD's, a link to the procedure can be found in this Apple Knowledge Base article:

  • Ibook 500 mhz upgraded to 700 mhz

I've upgraded my ibook 500 mhz to a 700 mhz by switching the logic board. Everything seemed to be working well, unfortunately now I can install any new system software on it. Everytime I try to install either OS 9 or OS X from different CD's, an installer error occurs. With one CD the screen changes with coloured lines through it, other cd's give me installer errors. Has anyone ever heard of something like this before?
    Thanks.

The fact that the two models have different methods for resetting the PMU should have been a clue to you that this would not work. I'm afraid you are going to have to try something different.
The logic board for the 500 MHz model can be found at PowerBook Tech. If you talk to Daniel there, he may be able to tell you which other model will work. (I believe you could use the 600 MHz model and have it work okay, too, but he will know for certain.) He may be willing to swap boards with you.
    Good luck.

  • How to identify an iBook G/3 700 MHz?

I'm trying to get an accurate identification of the iBook white G/3 700 MHz with 12in display we just acquired. There seems to be a couple of very similar models. The Apple Support article is unclear (<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88039>) as to which one we have. One model is an early 2002 release (M8602LL/A), the other a late 2002 release (M8860LL/A). Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your time.

  • How do I buy an iphoto 6 book now on a PowerPC Mac?

My mom has a PowerPC Mac with Mac OS X 10.4.11 and iPhoto 6.0.6. She is now unable to buy a book. What would the best course of action be?
NOTE - Please don't respond "buy a new computer" also, don't respond to install "App Store" and upgrade to iPhoto '11 (that doesn't work on a PowerPC Mac as far as I can tell).
NOTE 2 - My Mom does have an Intel Based Mac Book and could install iPhoto '11 on that computer; however, I can't find any step by step migration strategy from iPhoto 6.0.6 to iPhoto '11. If this is your recommendation, please point me to where a migration step-by-step exists.
NOTE 3 - I'm sorry about posting in the wrong forum. There is no iPhoto 6 forum available anymore :-/
    Thanks for your help....

SInce the only possible response is to upgrade iPhoto to '08 or later that is the answer
You may be able to purchase older versions of iPhoto on e-bay
To migrate from one computer to another you simply move the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from one computer to the other (if you have an existing iPhoto library you want to keep be sure to rename it before moving) - Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
That is correct - the new forums eliminate the versions except as key words - as a volenteer trying to help I find that extemely difficult but it is what it is

  • Networking Tigerized eMac 700 MHz and PM 7200 OS7.6.1 - need help!

    Hello,
I've looked on the boards and hit up Google but to no avail so I thought I'd try to ask in this forum for the help I need in sorting out my problem.
I have an eMac 700MHz, and am trying to connect my old (but functioning) PowerMac 7200. I want to back up a few bits of data and then format the HDD and reinstall an OS on it before selling/tossing it.
I tried to do this using an Ethernet cable. On the eMac in the Network view, I'd get a greyed out image of the PM, but it tells me that I can't get anywhere as there is an incompatibility in Apple Talk versions being used.
The PowerMac is old and only has 16MB of RAM. I'm not keen to buy a copy of OS8+ just to transfer less than a CD-R's worth of old mail and docs. Would that it had USB, I'd plug in a thumb drive or my iPod Shuffle.
The HDD is also pretty full - maybe 40MB of the 500MB is free. I tried to use a CD-R in the drive that I'd burnt on the eMac, but the PM wouldn't recognize it saying that the thing was unreadable. Have standards changed that much?
What's frustrating about this is I bought it second-hand from an Apple shop in '99, but they didn't give me any OS discs. Back then I was a tad more naive about computers and such. Now I wonder how they got away with it, and if any of the software I might have otherwise received could have helped me.
Any assistance that can be provided - any at all! - would be most welcome. I'm trying to tidy up the house here since a cohabiting family member has become unwell, and it'd free up space I could use for other things.
    Thanks in advance,
    Hoopy
    eMac 700MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   640MB RAM

No need to change the name of the OS 9 System Folder since the folder order list doesn't matter. It sounds as if you need to re-bless the OS 9 System Folder, per the instructions under No "blessed" Mac OS 9 System Folder in Classic doesn't start, Mac OS 9 not installed or recognized.
You may also find OS X: How to Perform Mac OS 9 Clean Install useful. Some posters have noted problems with natively booting OS 9 after upgrading to Tiger, although I had no problems a while back when I booted my office Quicksilver G4 in OS 9 to try to get HP all-in-one drivers installed for use in Classic.
Cavet: when the 700 MHz eMac shipped, it was formatted to be a dual boot machine. If at any time since then you reformatted the hard drive using the OS X Install disc, there's a gotcha: OS X does not by default include the OS 9 boot driver. That has to explicitly enabled. If the OS 9 drivers are missing, I'm not aware of any way to reinstall the OS 9 drivers without having to reformat the hard drive, although someone in the OS 9 or Classic forums may be better able to help.

  • I have bought a 2nd hand late 2008 macbook air and can't install iPhoto as it requires update 10.9 or higher i can't seem to update any further than 10.7.5 help???

I have bought a 2nd hand late 2008 macbook air and can't install iPhoto as it says it requires update 10.9 or higher i can't seem to update any further than 10.7.5 can anyone help please???

Thankyou for your response... being new to this i have had a look and it says the following
This system can run the last version of OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion" as well as the current version of OS X 10.9 "Mavericks," but does not support the AirDrop, AirPlay Mirroring, or Power Nap features. It is not supported booting into 64-bit mode when running Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard." It does support "OpenCL" and Grand Central Dispatch introduced with Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard."
Please note that OS X "Lion" 10.7 and subsequent versions of OS X, like Mountain Lion and Mavericks, are not capable of running Mac OS X apps originally written for the PowerPC processor as these operating systems do not support the "Rosetta" environment. To run PowerPC applications on this Mac, it will be necessary to use Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" or earlier

  • I have Mac OS X 10.4.11 with 600 mhz PowerPC G3 how do i get Flash Player 10.3.183.20 (65.7 MB) power pc processor

i have Mac OS X 10.4.11 with 600 mhz PowerPC G3 how do i get Flash Player 10.3.183.20 (65.7 MB) power pc processor?

Flash Player version 10.1.102.64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users. However, this Flash version won't work for many videos on Facebook, YouTube and other sites. Adobe's latest version, 10.2.x or later, is only for Intel Macs. Adobe will not provide a newer Flash version for PPC Macs.
The message requesting that you download Adobe Flash Player takes you to Flash Player requiring an Intel processor. Doesn't work on a PowerPC processor. I found a hack, installed it & it works with Firefox, TenFourFox & Safari.
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.
