Install iTunes 8 without QuickTime

I'd like to install the new version of iTunes without installing QuickTime. How do I do this? And why does Apple not have this as an option for the installer?

Apple doesn't ask you about 4 programs it install with itunes including quicktime. I believe that quicktime includes some codecs mp4, m4a that itunes depends on, so you won't ever be able to install itunes without quicktime. There are other free softwares if you just want to put music on your ipod without itunes.

  • HOW TO: Install Itunes without Quicktime/Bonjour - Windows 7

You need iTunes without the bloat? Don't know what the bloat is? I'll help you. Now I don't know if this has been explained elsewhere, I only found some older topics and google results that didn't explain all the points required so I'm redoing it.
_NOTE: DO THIS ON THE DESKTOP_ (You'll see why later ;D)
    First is the Preperation;
Get the appropriate iTunes (my instructions are from the point of view of 64bit but they won't differ all that much)
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Go here and download the newest one (at time of writing thats QT Lite 4.1.0):
    http://www.vistacodec.com/fc/QT_Lite-410.exe
Please download/move/save these to the desktop.
    The Extraction
Right click on the iTunes64Setup.exe [iTunesSetup.exe for 32bit]
Navigate to your extraction program, I'm using 7zip so I navigate to "Extract Here". I'm sure you can go it alone if you don't use 7zip (because more fool you)
Then we will have a bunch of exe's and msi's on the desktop, of which we now need to delete several.
    This is the Deletion;
If you don't want both Quicktime and Bonjour, which I'll assume you don't because they impact performance and limit your control of media files, then you need to delete:
    Bonjour64.msi
    Quicktime64.msi
If you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch then skip this one point (though I have an iPod Touch I don't yet intend to use it with iTunes so I still deleted this, after all you can install it later from this single file). Delete:
    AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi
Now this is an important one, all updates must be done manually in this exact same manner, just come back here and follow the instructions again, otherwise iTunes will include the bloat in the update. Delete:
    AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
(Ignore SetupAdmin.exe, because I don't know what it does :D)
    Almost there, but first it's the +Linux Experience+;
In you're start menu there should be a "Command Prompt" shortcut, click it. If not don't worry, on your start menu click "Run" and type in:
    cmd.exe
Press enter and Bob's your uncle.
Otherwise right click on your desktop in empty space, highlight "New", select "Shortcut" and the location is:
    %windir%\system32\cmd.exe
When that's done just click the shortcut and Fanny's your aunt.
Now you'll notice that each line begins with:
    C:\Users\YOURNAME>
That's because it's the location this terminal is currently navigated to, like a web browser or the plain old windows explorer, just text based though.
We need to change the directory you are in and the command for this conveniently is:
    cd
And this is why I told you to do it all on the Desktop, because now all you have to do is change directory to the Desktop, which is one folder away. So, type this in the terminal (that's the command prompt window):
    cd Desktop
You'll notice that the prefix has changed to:
    C:\Users\YOURNAME\Desktop>
    That's good
Keep this window open and move on boys and girls.
    Next, the biggie, +Installation Part One+;
We're mostly borrowing from this lovely persons thread, so I ought to give it a mention:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1704004&tstart=15
Now we follow the last step on the thread linked, in case you're a philistine here it is...
In that (command prompt) terminal window, type:
    iTunes64.msi /passive
For those with 32bit i can only imagine it would be:
    iTunes.msi /passive
Then just sit back and let it run silently until you recieve an error message pertaining to the failure of iTunes without "Apple Aplication Support", when this arises just click ok or whatever shuts it up and move to the next step.
    Lastly, finally, is +Installation Part Deux+;
Double click AppleApplicationSupport.msi and just follow it through leaving everything as it is.
Then, remember that other download I got you to do? QT Lite? Well double click on that and install it. At the end tick the "Configure Settings" box and just tweak them to be supaqwik, like maximising the web cache or whatever. Use your judgment.
When that's done click apply/ok and... we're done!
Just click/double click the itunes icon and you'll see an improvement straight away.
Sorry if this tutorial was a bit too much like a Quentin Tarantino film for ya' but I gotta keep my brain from leaking out my ears, somehow
Enjoy, and if it's been done before I just hope it hasn't been done better.
I looked all over the internet and using the linked thread and some smarts; I got here, with you, and iTunes sans bloat.

QuickTime is required for iTunes to run. You can think of iTunes as a media manager "front end" to QuickTime which handles the actual playing of the media.
Safari was an optional install when I installed iTunes on my Windows system. I wasn't forced to install Safari. MobileMe is also no longer automatically installed, though it will update if it finds an existing installation. I didn't get it forced on me when I installed on my Vista system.

  • I can not open itunes without quicktime 7.5.5 why ?

i can not open itunes without quicktime 7.5.5 why ?

You don't provide us with much background infomation such as operating system version you are using, but usually when I see this kind of question it gets answered by:
    QuickTime 7.5.5 for Leopard - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL27
    QuickTime 7.7 for Leopard - http://support.apple.com/kb/dl761
= New version of Quicktime installed but application reports it needs to have that version installed =
Open Application > Utilities > System Profiler and check the Quicktime version in Frameworks vs. the version in Applications.  I recently helped where the person had re-installed their operating system.  It had kept the newer Player application but had reverted to an earlier version of the underlying support framework files which many applications utilize.  Re-installing Quicktime 7.7 took care of the problem.  Do this manually, not with Software Update.
Installation get stuck at "configuring installation" - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2592979?threadID=2592979  - uninstall Quicktime before installing.

  • Downloading iTunes Without QuickTime

From the latest update from Apple to iTunes users with Windows XP, there have been many having a problem opening iTunes without receiving an error. The latest resolution posted was to download an older version of QuickTime first, and then download iTunes without QuickTime bundled. This is where the fun begins. All web sites I have searched so far claim to have the iTunes download without QuickTime, but they all include QuickTime with the download.
Does anyone have an idea of where you can download iTunes without QuickTime bundled? Thanks!

Have you tried downloading the installer for Quicktime Pro 7.3 + iTunes and running it?
It should come up with two options "Repair" or "Uninstall" ... then choose repair and it should install iTunes 7.5 ... try that and see if it works. Instead of downloading iTunes + Quicktime, you download Quicktime + iTunes ... I know it's the same thing, but the installation of Quicktime is then checked first, and that accounts for the "Pro" paying customer part.

  • Itunes without quicktime

I was unable to install the 35.1 mb itunes program after downloading it- I'd click, nothing would happen at all. No error messages or anything. So I decided to try downloading and installing each portion (itunes and quicktime) separately.
Okay, I have uninstalled all quicktime applications, and downloaded and reinstalled the newest version of quicktime. Maybe I am completely overlooking the obvious, but where do I find itunes without quicktime?

Well, after 5 days of wrestling with this iPod and the iTunes programming, I finally found the solution. This is after repeated download and install attempts, and one unsuccessful call to customer support (I was on hold, after speaking with a representative, and was disconnected). The final solution is to take the iPod back to the dealer, and exchange it for another brand, that comes with an installation CD and music manager. We managed to listen to the pre-installed free music that came with the mp3 player on our way home from the store. I am already so much happier, just knowing that I don't have to work with that cotton-pickin' iPod any more.

Copy all the content on your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes. Then go ahead and sync the iPod with your new library.

  • QuickTime version 7.1 is installed, iTunes requires QuickTime version 7.1.3

QuickTime version 7.1 is installed, iTunes requires QuickTime version 7.1.3 or later. Please reinstall iTunes.
That's the error message I have gotten for the past 3 days since trying to upgrade itunes. I have the newest quicktime downloaded, have deleted itunes and quicktime and redownloaded it all, and it still won't work. I have NO idea what to do to make this work, but it's driving me crazy. If anyone can help, please give some advice.

You can try to fully remove both iTunes and Quicktime. Then reinstall the software again. The following link will walk you through the removal of both programs. Make sure you complete Step 16 in the article. Good luck.

Hey, just installed the newest version of iTunes today off the iTunes site.
    Getting the following message:
quicktime version 7.0d0 is installed, iTunes requires Quicktime version 7.0.3 or later. Please reinstall iTunes.
I have re-downloaded the install file and ran the "repair" option, but no good has come, same error.
    Any suggestions?
P.s. It worked fine after the install was first complete, it was after I restarted the PC that it wouldnt work.

I needed to hunt down an instal file for JUST quicktime (not quicktime and iTunes - doesnt work)

  • Quicktime version 7.0d0 is installed, iTunes requires Quicktime 7.0.3...

My error message is: Quicktime version 7.0d0 is installed, iTunes requires Quicktime 7.0.3 or higher. Please reinstall iTunes.
This all started when I was trying to upgrade. I have downloaded the new quicktime and when it came to the option of reparing or uninstalling, I chose repair.
I read through other problems, but didn't find this error message.
Can anyone please help me? In a way in which I don't lose my library?

Sorry. Um. Try to completely remove the Quicktime program from the Add/Remove directory via Control Panel. Reboot your computer. From the Apple website Save the Quicktime program to your Desktop (i.e., rather than "run from this location.") Install Quicktime by clicking on the Quicktime install program that should be present on your desktop. When it is done, reboot your computer.

I hope that that is the correct link.

  • Install itunes without bonjour or apple mobile device support

For my company having bonjour is not an option and is considered a security threat, even after uninstalling bonjour it still appears in the registry. Therefore it was nessesary to put on our company server the msi file for itunes.
    To install itunes WITHOUT bonjour:
1.) Download the itunes setup exe file.
2.) Download 7-zip or winrar, and install.
3.) Right click the exe file and extract the files.
4.) Delete bonjour and or mobile device support (if you perfer not to have an iphone service running all the time)
5.) Run the extracted itunes.msi file.
Now the only service that will be installed is the ipod service, which is better than having 3 services just to put songs on your ipod.

Someone may have a brainwave at Apple and give people a choice on what iTunes installs with an optional gui installer. I'm getting fed up with installing software that constantly want to put other unnecessary products on my system.
I always try yo install using a custom install (where I can) option as opposed to "Express Setup" or "Typical Install" because invarably they come with a "very useful" toolbar or default search engine.
I do not want to install Safari an my machine, in fact I would go so far as to say I will never install it on principle. Everytime the iTunes update window comes up, the option to install Safari is automatically ticked, I find this grossly offensive and arrogant by Apple.
    This post might get deleted.

  • Installing itunes and quicktime problem

Alright i am having problems installing itunes and quicktime, itunes downloads fine but when the quicktime install gets to writing system registry values it says "Could not open key: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\QuicktimePlayerLib.QuicktimePlayerApp\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel"

    "Could not open key: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes
\QuicktimePlayerLib.QuicktimePlayerApp\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient >access to that key, or contact your support personnel"
Crikey. Haven't seen one of those for an eternity.
Checking on a simpler possibility with it first. It can be produced if certain older versions of QuickTime were installed in a different administrative user accpount from the one in which you're currently attempting to install the newer version.
Do you have other user accounts with full administrative rights on the PC? If so, can the install go through successfully from any of those?
