Install JDK 1.5.0.08 on SUSE 10.1

HELP!
I ran the installer in bash and it said it completed successfully; however, when I type:
java -version
I still get the following:
java version "1.4.2"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.1.0 (SUSE Linux)
Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
This is free software; see the source for copying conditions. There is NO
warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
I cannot use javac to compile either. What do I need to do to use the JDK instead of just the JRE?

I suspect that SuSE uses /etc/alternatives to determine which java binary to execute. Try 'man update-alternatives', or maybe 'update-alternatives --help'. You need to change the priority order so the Sun JDK installation has higher priority than the default GNU JRE.

  • Installing jdk on windows 7

Forgive me in advance as I am completely new to this. In September of this year I'll be starting an ict degree with the Open University. I figured I'd get a head start by learning a bit of java. I have installed jdk (64bit) for windows 7 fine, and altered the path so that the javac command works ok from the command prompt. However, it still does not work as I am getting the following error:
error while writing.......a required privelage is not held by the client
The problem seems to be that the javac application (and presumably all the others too) needs to be run in admin mode. I edited the properties of javac, and now when i use it from the command prompt it works fine. Is there an easier way around this?

Looks like you are trying to compile in a directory where you don't have rights.
Like a JDK directory under \program files. If this is the case, work in a directory under your user profile.
Copy samples from the JDK as necessary.

as far as dling the right jdk if you have windows you use the windows version of the jdk the download spot

First make sure that you are logged in as "root", or use su [root password] to be logged in as.
And then try all that things again.

I'm sorry but this is not completely right.
Linux x86_64 uses the IBM JDK, only Linux on x86 and Linux on IA64 use the Sun JDK.

  • Can't install JDK 5.0 on Windows

I'm trying to install Java 5.0 on my Windows NT Workstation 4.0 box, but I can't get the installer to work. If I try the combined Netbeans 4.0 beta 2 and JDK 5.0 installer, it installs Netbeans fine, but then stops and complains that there "may have been an error installing" JDK 5.0 and tells me to look in install.log. Unfortunately, it hasn't created an install.log file.
If I try the separate Windows Offline installer for JDK 5.0, I get the splash screen and the harddisk rattles a while, but then I get a dialog asking me where it can find the "Java 2 SDK, SE v1.5.0.msi" file. I can't find that file anywhere so I have no choice but to click Cancel.
What's going on? Is there some installer-less version of the JDK somewhere which I can use? Can I cause the installer to run correctly?

I had a similar experience with both the JRE 5.0 and JDK 5.0 installations on my machine with Windows XP service pack 2. The installations would start coping files and installing. Near the end of the installation, the installation would just freeze. I brought up Windows Task Manager and noticed a java process was running and not taking up any CPU time. I tried but could not kill this java process. I tried to shutdown down my computer, but in the end I had hit the off button my case.
I uninstalled the JDK and tried again. Once again the installation freezed right when it started a java processes. From the command line I then tried java -version. Nothing happened and the command would not return. I brought up another command window and tried again. Same result. Now I had three java processes in the Windows Task Manager. I tried to "end process" all three java processes, but they would just remain the Windows Task Manger. All three could not be killed. Once again I had to turn my computer off (Shutdown didn't work again, it would just freeze).
After rebooting I was able to run java -version and get "1.5.0". It seems that whatever the installation did before starting the java process was enough for me to use java 5. What does the installation spawned java processes do?
I tried several things to get the installation to run all the way through. I cleaned my PATH and other environment variables, I tried stopping all unnecessary processes and services. Everytime I ran the installation I got the same results.
Here are the steps I had to take on my computer to install j2sdk 5.
    1. Install JDK 5.0.
    2. Watch for java process in Windows Task Manager.
    3. Turn off and then turn on the computer.
    4. Install JRE 5.0
    5. Watch for java process in Windows Task Manager.
    6. Turn off and then turn on the computer.

  • Installing jdk 1.4.2 and 1.5 parallel

    Hello,
I would like to know it is possible to install jdk 1.5 on a windows XP machine already countaining jdk 1.4.2.
I need both versions. I want to switch between them with Eclipse build in features or by selecting the whole path to the bin folder of the target version in batch scripts.
Is this possible or does dll or registry stuff collide?
    Tanks in advance.
    Alex

When you install a JDK in Windows, you are given the choice to not install a JRE (it's installed by default).
The JRE uses the Registry and also installs copies of java.exe, javaw.exe, and javaws.exe in /Windows/System32 directory. The JDK doesn't alter or install anything outside of the directory it installs into.
You can have as many JDK installs (directories) of different versions as you want, and access the programs in each with a full path to the program. You can provide the path information either from the commandline or a .bat file.
If any of the installs also install a JRE, then the Registry entries and java files in the System32 directory will be for the last version installed. There can only be one active JRE installed.
Whatever version's files are found first on the PATH environment variable's list will be the version executed when a naked java command (without the path) is issued. This also means that you will [usually] execute the version whose files are in the System32 directory, since that directory is [usually] the first directory listed in the PATh list.

  • Problem in installing JDK 5.0

    Hi,
In order to install ORacle SQL Developer for linux, I tried to install JDK 5.0 according to the instruction. I downloaded the files and installed it. But when running the sqldeveloper, I got the error message:
Error: This product requires a Java(TM) Platform 5.0 runtime.
You are using 1.4.2 from /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-gcj-1.4.2.0/jre
sqldeveloper installation instruction suggests to go to this page:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp
and download JDK 5.0 Update 6. Since this website doesn't have 6, so I downloaded JDK 5.0 Update 10.
How do I make sure JDK 1.5 is installed?

Sorry for delay but I was temporary away without
    internet connectivity ;-(
That commad will print "/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_10" and
    redirect this text (output) to
/home/cdre/.sqldeveloper_jdk file. If the file is
exists then contents of file will be replaced by new
text. If the file does not exeist then will be
    created.
But there is another problem. Seems you are using
SQLDeveloper 1.1 and (where some things were changed
from 1.0) and this command is valid for 1.0.No problem. I have learned a lot about shell scripting recently.
