Install LaserJet 4M Plus on system w/o serial

I'm trying to install a LaserJet 4m Plus on a laptop running Windows XP and which has neither a parallel nor serial port. I've purchased a USB => Serial cable and am trying to use that instead of the (I think) preferred parallel to Centronics adapter.
Anyway, the printer seems to have installed, or at least XP does see it out there and recognizes it as online; the printer display also says it's online.
When I attempt to print a test page, the page fails to print and just remains in the printer queue in an "error - printing" status.
I think there's a 2nd option; connecting the printer directly to my network via ethernet cable, but I have no clue how to accomplish that.
I'd greatly appreaciate any assistance / guidance that can be given

Assuming I can get the initial problem resolved and use the printer as attached to the Win XP laptop, will (should I) I be able to share the printer with other systems running Win 7?

This is might be a bit of a concern. If I combine this with the inability to get a SHA1 value or even an error message from the Terminal and the HP installer having giving you an error message (at least the first time you ran it), I am beginning to think there may be a problem with your system.
We can explore the possibility of system corruption as a last resort. I did some digging on the HP site and think I have some informatin that will be of use and some additional questions.
1. The "W2 Invalid pers" error message you get when trying to use the duplexer is defined in thelist of error codes as The job was not printed because the requested personality, such as PostScript (MP), was not installed.
Install the language in which the files are sent, together with enough memory to support that language. Clear message by pressing SHIFT and Continue on the printer.Troubleshooting: a) is there a way to make sure the printer recognizes that the duplexer is installed and functioning? Is there a self test page that you can print that lists the duplexer as being recognized and is funcioning?
b) how much memory do you have installed? HP says that it needs at least 4 MB for a duplex letter size page at 300 dpi and 12 MB at 600 dpi
c) when you added the optional duplexer in the PPD, did you also set the memory section to match what you have installed in the printer?
2. Printing using the Postscript module requires more memory than printing using the PCL language. Have you successfully printed a document using the duplexer using the PostScript option before? It may not be obvious so you might want to double check. The printer doesn't really care whether it gets PostScript or PCL. It will adapt.

HP Laserjet 4 plus not working with Powerbook G4 & 10.5.8

I have been using a Powerbook G4 running 10.4.11 with a HP Laserjet 4 plus without any problems. Last week I updated my G4 to 10.5.8. To acheive this, I purchased a full retail 10.1 DVD from Ebay installed it then updated to 10.5.8 using Apples Update Software feature. I believe all the features of my computer work except printing. Previously I have been using an apple wireless network without any problems.
Now when using 10.5.8 I have tried this:
1) select system preferences
2) then select print & fax
3) then click on the plus sign to add a printer
4) the window that shows up that says default, fax. ip, windows, bluetooth, apple talk, more printers across the top of it.
5) In this window the are two Laserjet 4 plus machines listed. One is listed with Appletalk and one is listed with Bonjour Shared. I only own one machine. I have tried selecting both of them separately and each time the same problem continues to happen.
Each time either of the Laserjet 4 plus printers are selected the "Print Using" pull down menu begins searching for new drivers. The gray circular animation just goes round and round and eventually does not do anything. Obviously something has not installed correctly. Or there is a conflict somewhere that I have not been able to figure out.
I have downloaded and installed the HP Laserjet and Edgeline print-only.mpkg from HP's website. The problem still exists.
A family member in my household is using an Intel MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 with this same HP Laserjet 4 Plus on the same bonjour shared network without any problems. This being the case, I am confident the old HP 4 Plus printer will work with 10.5.8 using an apple wireless network.
Any help would be appreciated.

The HP 4 printer has a JetDirect card in the back of it. The JetDirect card has a 10BaseT ethernet which I connected with an ethernet cable to an airport express base station. The express unit communicates with the main airport unit in my home.
Many years ago I worked for a company that rebuilt macintosh computers and hardware for resale. I rebuilt this HP printer from spare parts and added the JetDirect card at that time and have not had any major problems with the unit until now. It had no problems or printing errors when I was running 10.4.11.
I neglected to mention that after the printer would not work with 10.5.8 I went back and tried to reinstall the optional printer driver package on the original 10.5.1 installation DVD. When this did not work either, I downloaded the HP print driver package available from their website. Could I have somehow screwed this up by installing the incorrect or uncompatible print drivers?

I see that you need the drivers for the Laserjet 1020 plus for Yosemite. I would like to help you.
The Laserjet 1020 plus printer is only supported on a Windows computer. There are no drivers available for any Mac operating system. Here is the website showing the available drivers. HP LaserJet 1020 Plus Printer.
You can check to see if Apple has a compatible driver. This document provides the steps for running the Apple Updates.

You would have to get a printer that supports Yosemite.

Installed BT NetProtect Plus now I cannot access m...

Hi,
I thought I was doing the right thing by installing BT NetProtect plus on my Windows XP Pro PC however ever since I have had issues. I can no longer browse my home network to access shared files - when I double-click my workgroup I get an error of 'MSHOME is not accessible, you may not have permission to use this network resource'. I did not get this prior to the installation. I tried initially just disabling the firewall - at least this allowed other PCs to browse the shares on my PC but it did not help on my PC.
I have now uninstalled NetProtect Plus but this has not resolved the issue. It would seem that the software has changed some setting but not reset it when removed.
I do have File and Printer sharing enabled on my PC
I have enabled WINS
I do have the Computer Browser Service running
All of these were suggestions on the Internet. Still no luck.
Please any other suggestions would be most welcome as I need to be able to access the network for my work.

Some things that might be worth checking.
The account/share password if any is still correct.
The Log On credentials for the appropriate System Services are still correct (cross check any details using your other PCs )
The User/Admin Account you are using still has the proper credentials & access rights, particularly to the folders you have shared.

Problem installing Laserjet 4050 in Windows 7 x64, No driver in Universal Print Driver v5.0.3

I have just installed Windows 7 64Bit operating system. I have be successful in installing several other more recent HP printers in the office. However, my main "workhorse" printer is a HP Laserjet 4050 and I have downloaded the Universal Printer Driver v5.0.3 for Windows x64 - PCL 5 and PCL 6, and in both cases it does not find a suitable driver. The HP download site states these Universal Drivers will work, but I cannot get it to install.
Is there a driver that will work on the 4050 in Windows 7 X64? Thanks everyone.

You're probably getting the "Windows cannot locate a suitable printer driver" error if you're trying to add the driver while adding a printer that is shared over the network. You see, HP's Universal Printer Driver (UPD) doesn't contain the PnpIDs of every printers it supports, so when you specify HP's UPD as the drivers for the network printer, if Windows can't find a match for the printer's PnpID it spits out the driver isn't compatible.
The way to overcome this is to install a "generic" printer locally, using HP's UP driver, and change the port afterwards to point to the shared printer. So, first, add a local printer (that will be using the LPT1 port - make sure no printer is attached!), and click on "Have disk(s)" to browse to and select HP's UPD. Going through the remaining steps should install a locally-attached printer named something like "HP Universal Printing PCL 5" (or "[..] PCL 6"). You'll then go in the new printer's properties, on the "Ports" tab, and click on "Add Port...". If you're installing a shared printer, you'll select "Local Port", click on "New Port..." and specify the path to the printer (e.g. \\myserver\hplaserj) as the port name. Those steps should do the trick.
Last thing: beware, though, as HP's UPD PCL 6 might not be compatible (anymore) with your LaserJet 4050, as they use a PCL XL class number/revision (class 2.1; sort of a version number of the protocol) that is higher than what your printer's firmware might support for PCL6 (should be class 2.0) I know the latest versions of HP's UPD PCL 6 doesn't work with our LJ 4000 & 4050 printers, so you might have to use the PCL5e driver for those 64-bit workstations.

Print error on HP LaserJet 4 Plus

     I have a Macbook Air, Mac OS X 10.6.8 and have installed my old trusty Laserjet 4 Plus printer. It printed once, then gave me an error, "W2 INVALID PERS"
and won't print again. I am told I do not need to download another driver, the Air has what is necessary
     I have tried the Generic PCL Laser printer driver as well as the HP driver and neither work. I looked on the HP site and there is nothing available for this printer, only the Laserjet 4 Plus "M"
     I am using a USB to Parallel cable. In the printer queue everything seems to go to 4% then stop sending.
Even though all the sites say this will work with the Air, could it be that there is not enough Ram (or something) to make it work?
I am sooooo frustrated! It is an old printer but works fabulously for what I need AND I have lots of cartridges for it!
Any ideas would be appreciated!

"W2 INVALID PERS" translates to 'Invalid Personality' - it occurs when you're trying to send a PostScript-formatted print file to an HP printer than only recognizes HP-PCL.

Windows 7 and HP LaserJet 4 Plus

I have a new laptop with windows 7 and an old (but very reliable) LaserJet 4 Plus printer. I was able to download print drivers from the HP site but it still will not print. I don't get any error messages, just nothing happens when I try to print a document or test page. Do I need to change something else in my settings?

There are two main areas for issues installing a Laserjet 4 in Windows 7:
Ports. The Laserjet 4 and its derivatives had a standard parallel port but most Windows 7 machines no longer have a parallel port. The most common solution is a USB-parallel converter cable. This can be problematic because many of the converter cables do not support Windows 7. [Edit - the posts flagged here have models of converter cables users in the forum has reported as working in Windows 7.] Additionally, most of the cables have no documentation (or even a brand name) making it difficult to resolve issues. The converter may provide a simulated parallel port such as LPT3: or it may be a port like USB001:. Another option with the Laserjet 4 would be to add a JetDirect card which would provide a network port for the Laserjet 4. This will require the Laserjet to be connected to a router and would provide network access to multiple computers if you wish. A typical JetDirect card for the Laserjet 4 is shown here.
Drivers. The drivers for the Laserjet 4 (and 4M and other derivatives) are delivered through Windows Update. If Windows Update is enabled (as described in step method 2 here under the section to "Configure Windows Update to"...) you may be able to just connect the USB cable and have the driver properly install. If not do the following: click on the Start Orb, Devices and Printers, Add a Printer, then select the appropriate port. When the list of printers comes up click on Windows Update. It will take several minutes for the list to repopulate, once this is complete the Laserjet 4 series printers will be available under HP (not Hewlett-Packard).

Need driver for HP Laserjet 4 Plus

LaserJet 4 Plus, Windows 8, but Customer support says Windows 7 works. I have just upgraded from Vista to Windows 8 and have been unabvlke to find a driver for this workhorse printer. I can't believe that HP wants me to stop spending 132.99 on toner replacement and has stopped supporting. Saw previous post for Windows 7 but when I use Windows Update on my 2 day old Windows 8 Pavilionit hangs up the sytem for 2 hours. Finally had to 3 finger salute and still no listing for driver. Can anyone help? I hate to dump this reliable, and ecomomic HP printer. Best purchase ever when it was supported.

Bullshark, the driver for LaserJet 4 Plus *is* listed. You first have to click "Windows Update" (screenshot 1) during the 'Add Printer' process. The list repopulates and will THEN include LaserJet 4 Plus (screenshot 2).
Will you let me know if that works out successfully for you?
My issue happens after that. I get a "Driver was not Install" error message

I'm looking for the driver for a Laserjet 4 plus is there a driver. I wanted to share the Laserjet with my windows 7, but mac have removed the printer setup utility off Yosemite 10,10,4 so i'm now trying to use the Laserjet with the Mac

The laserjet 4 plus is not compatible with the MAC unless you have the postscript option installed. That said there are some aftermarket programs that will allow you to use a non postscript printer on a MAC. Best to do a search or post this question on the MAC support site.

Can't install BT NetProtect Plus on Windows 7 Prof...

I can't install BT NetProtect Plus on Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with IE9 after my 12 month free McAfee package exspired. It seems to have uninstalled the free version by stops after I press the "I agree" button in response the licensing question. All that's shown on blank window arethe BTY and McAfee logos Have tried the following: - uninstalling Firefox (including No Script add in) - restoring system to a time before the free McAfee exspired - checked Scripting of Java Applets ins enabled - pop up blocker is disabled - pressed Compatibilty Button on address bar When trying to submit feedback to a FAQ I noticed a "Javascript&colon;void(0)" error and couldn't submit it.Likewise, when I tried to spel lcheck the first version of this post, I lost it all with an error. I've exhausted my own attempts and would appreciate some advise on what to try next.

I solved the problem by installing an alternative security software product, uninstalling IE9 and going back to IE8. For some reason javascript wasn't working in IE9 despite being enabled in the security settings.
Uninstalling the free version of McAfee seemed to have screwed up javascript in IE9 which then prevented BT Netprotect from installing.

Using HP Laserjet 4m plus with Windows 8.1

My pc is a HP p6-2376pc w/Windows 8.1, my Printer is HP laserjet 4m plus using TCP/IP and ethernet conection.
Using both manual and auto set-up my printer will not print from pc.
Will print test page manually. Will cancel pages in queue from pc.
Manual test page shows Printer IP Address is Port 10.2.144.123
PC shows IP Address is Port 192.168.1.47
I have tried unsucessfully to configure the two.
I keep getting back error code # 0x803C010B
Is there a patch or anyway to correct the issue?

How did you install the 4m plus driver? We recommend that you use the Windows Update driver via a network connection. For your convience, here are some instructions showing how to use/load the drivers. Have you tried loading the drivers this way and seeing if this resolves your issue?

Little horizontal lines at the left side of the page, printed on the HP Laserjet 4 plus?

Folks, It seems that when I print to my HP laserjet 4 plus, I see some tiny horizontal lines on the left side of the printed page, spaced 4-5 inches apart, all at the very furthest left side of the page. Is this something that I can turn off? Are they some sort of binding marks? I am printing to this printer via jet direct card, over TCP/IP, from a Windows 7 64 bit PC. I love this printer, and recently changed out the exit assembly rollers, and now works like it was new. I also have a 500 sheet drawer and a duplexer installed on it, and I would like to figure out how to get rid of those little horizontal tick marks that show up on the left side of the page. Any help or assistance is GREATLY appreciated, Thanks so much in advance!

Laserjet 4m plus

Hi all. I have a *really* nice LaserJet 4m Plus with the duplex and the (not sure what to call it) extra capacity base unit. It's big, it's ugly, it's old, and it works GREAT for my non-commercial (in other words) home.
It was previously "owned" by an older XP tower system that I kept around specifically as a print server; in addition to the 4m that system also supported a 970Cxi deskjet. Both of thes printers were shared by that print server, evey other system (about 5 or 6 depending on who was visiting) were quite happy to send print jobs to either of the printers and both printers performed remarkably well.
In the past couple of weeks unfortunately that tower system died, and I was given an HP Pvailion DV8000 laptop, which I'm now using as the print server. The 970Cxi is attached via USB, shared, networked, and just as before it works exacly as I want it to. The 4m however can't (mpore on that in a moment) attach to the laptop though as there is no parallel port on the laptop ... only USB
