Install lion on old macbook pro

I'm using a MacBookPro2,1 - purchaced 2007. 17 in. OS 10.6.8. 4 GB RAM installed. It only recognizes 3.
I use this mac professionally for graphics and web development. I also have a .Mac account and I don't want to lose the use of it by not updating to Lion. I don't care about iCloud. Probalby won't use it. An this old macbook doesn't take advantage of some of the other techy trick that come with Lion like the mouse pad functions amoung others.
I have Lion thumb drive that I am ready to install on a couple other Macs. An iMac (late 2007) and another MBP 15.
First. Is this a wise move updating to Lion? If I do decide to do it, should I do a clean install or install over 10.6.8? I understand the importance making a full backup and making a clone of current system.
I assume that the preferences I may want to bring back into Lion will be compatible after a clean install as they would be if I did an update over 10.6.8. Also all the programs I'm using now such as all Adobe CS4, Parallels 6, Microsoft Office 2008, will still work.
I've read some disappointing experiences in these communities giving some concern for the usability and stability of my Macbook.
Some feedback from some others using their macs as I do would most appreciated.
TIA
YM

As you have a Lion thumb drive you can try Lion on an external drive to see if you like it.
If you have a clone on an external drive you can install (upgrade) Lion on this. Then you can boot from the upgraded external Lion cloned drive and use it to see if it is satisfactory.
I you like it you can clone the external Lion to your Mac drive. If you don't like Lion you still have 10.6 on the Mac which can be re cloned the external drive

I installed Lion on my MacBook Pro and the Finder keeps quitting - how do i fix it?
Worse, i can't force quit the finder and get it to relaunch - the command won't work.
Most of the Lion software also won't work - iTunes, Mail, iCal - and only some of the preferences work.
    The message:
    Finder quit unexpectedly.
Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.
Won't go away no matter if i hit Ignore or Report...
I have no clue what to do...
    Any help?

Does that happen if you boot into "safe mode"?  Launch the Console utility and look for messages that might explain the problem.  If you see a "crash report", post its contents here.

  • Hello everyone!  i have a new macbook pro and i want to download aperture.  my app store says it is already installed (on my old macbook pro).  how do i install aperture from the app store in this instance please?

hello everyone!  i have a new macbook pro and i want to download aperture.  my app store says it is already installed (on my old macbook pro).  how do i install aperture from the app store in this instance please?

Are yoy sure that Apeture is not in the Applications folder of the new system? If it is move it to the trash and the App Store will let you download Aperture from it.
You will need to make sure you use the same Apple ID you used to purchase it in the past.

  • What will happen if I install Lion on my macbook pro core duo??

What will happen if I install Lion on my macbook pro core duo? I have one of the first Intel MacBook Pro's with a Core Duo processer, I'm having hard drive problems so want to format it and re-install my OS. I can't find my Snow Leopard disk so the easiest thing to do would be to download Lion but I have been told that my MacBook needs to have a Core 2 Duo processer so I just wondered if anyone else has tried Lion on a MacBook like mine??

    Nothing.
Lion will not run on a core duo, it needs a core 2 duo as a minimum
    see Technical Specifications
Also you will need SL running to access the App Store to download Lion. So In a number of ways this won;t work.

  • Can i update osx mountain lion to old macbook pro 2.6ghz

Hi, is it possible to update my old macbook pro 2.6GHZ Core 2 Duo/2GB/256MB to mountain lion? I don't know the build/model date? Serial no.W8******02D.
    <Edited By Host>

Probably - this is what I 'found' in MacTracker:
...and that's what that Apple Serial Number website pulled up for that serial number. We'll have to wait for the OP to clarify!
    Clinton
edit: but MacTracker also says that model can use OS X Mountain Lion... so regardless of model, the answer to the OP should be "yes."

  • Problem installing Lion on my Macbook Pro.

Hello all. I bought the virtual lion upgrade from the Apple store a year and half ago, after installing it I noticed I coudn't use many applications I used daily. That lead me to reinstall Snow Leopard on my computer using my time machine backup.
After purchasing an external HD big enough to contain my Snow Leopard I decided to reinstall Lion and keep all the old applications on the Snow Leopard Partition on my external HD. Here is where all the problems began. After installing Lion again the computer coudn't get past the gray screen with spinning wheel. I remamber once during one of the many attempts it actually did get past the gray screen right after installing it but didn't last long since at night i turned off the macbook pro and by the morning the same problem happened.
Now after a long period of time I am willing to install that OS Lion on my mac even because I need it in order to install some applications that are not supported on Snow Leopard but the same problem happends...I have now used time machine to be able to get into my computer again and type this down.
Here is the current steps I already took:
    - Backed up with time machine.
    - Verified Disk
    - Repaired Permissions ( right after the repair completes, if I click repair permissions again it starts reparing a whole load of new permissions and as far as I know could go infinitely...is this normal?!)
    Additional information:
    MacBook Pro 5,1
    Snow leopard 10.6.8
Processor 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Now I read that restarting the NVRAM and SMC might help and I was thinking about doing that, just not sure in what order and any help would be much appretiated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Gabriel

    Little update.
I reset the SMC and NVRAM but it still not works. I also tried to Repair the Permissions under the Lion download using the "alt" key to access the Recovery HD and than I reinstalled lion under Recovery HD but still won't boot.

  • Lion on old Macbook Pro?

I have an older Macbook Pro and was wondering: would it handle Lion well? Here are the specs:
    Model identifier: 3,1
    2.2 ghz core duo
    4 MB on-chip shared L2 cache
160 GB drive with about 35 gigs free
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I only had the chance to compare speeds from Tiger through Leopard to Snow Leopard (and even Lion) on a 2006 MacPro 2xDualCore 2.66GHz with 8GB RAM and can't say that I witnessed speed-changes for worse or better through the OSX versions.
    But mileage can vary.
Our residential Kappy (formerly known as The Professor) has made-up a nice list of Maintenance Tips and Tricks, that I quote below:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation.  TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible;  Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided.  Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.  Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe modebefore doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.

  • I just installed lion on my macbook pro it doesn't let me log into my username. so what im going to do is to restore it and reinstall lion any help on how to do it correctly tho??

so i installed lion on my friends macbook pro and it didn't let me log into his personal username like after you turn it on it just hilghts his name and the bar to type in his password doesn't show you. so what i was thing is to back up his personal hard drive and restoring it and try to reinstall lion.. from a momory stick that i have put lion on as my personal copy. any way on doing it better or how to restore the mac and be able to reinstall lion plz help.

    Chuck
Without knowing what exactly has gone wrong it is difficult to be precise, but it sounds a bit like you are attempting to install YOUR copy of Lion on your friend's machine?
I'm not sure the licence allows you to do that.
IF you are attempting to install a legitimate copy of Lion on his machine, then I would suggest you try again. That sometimes works.
Do you / he have a backup?
Have you tried starting from the recovery disk and repairing the hard drive etc.?

  • I installed Lion on my MacBook Pro. I installed iOS5 on my iPad and iPhone4S. I have activated iCloud on all three devices. The Calendar changes are moving between the iPad and iPhone4S but NOT showing up in iCal on the MacBook Pro. Any suggestions?

Help. I have double checked everything I and my husband can think of. I need to be able to print out my daily agenda and I can only do that from the MacBook Pro. And of course it is the devise that is not getting the updated iCal data. Any suggestions?

Levi G B ... Also found another thread by Davidfromsurfside on 10/14/11 0703A with the same problem. I responded on his thread "I have the same problem. IOS5 on iPad1, iPad2 and iPhone4S all with iCloud on. Lion 10.7.2 installed on my MacBookPro and iCloud set up/on. Any new iCal entry on either iPad or on the iPhone ends up via iCloud on both iPads and iPhone. BUT NOT ON THE MacBookPro. And iCal entry on the MacBookPro does NOT GET SENT to iCloud.com or to either iPad or the iPhone. This is a huge problem for me because I do all my office scheduling on the iPad or iPhone but rely on the MakeBookPro to print out daily client lists. I REALLY need to get this fixed...it is causing major business issues. " No one so far has had a fix....  :(

  • How to install Lion on a MacBook Pro 2,2?

    Hi everyone,
I try to install OS X 10.7 on my MacBook Pro 2,2 (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz, 3GB RAM, 500GB HD with 270 of free disk space). I tried to install Lion from a USB stick but only got an error message that Mac OS X Lion Installation.app could not be used with the current version of Mac OS X (10.5.8).
According to Mactracker, my MBP should be able to run OS 10.7.5…
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?
Your help would be very much appreciated!
    Cheers,

  • Just installed Lion on 2009 MacBook Pro moved from Snow Leopard - img. copies of movies will not play on DVD player

I have a MacBook Pro 2009.   In order to get iCloud I have moved to Lion.   Mountain Lion will slow machine too much.  I now find that DVD player will not play the Disc Image  .img  movie files.  When I open DVD player and click File and Open DVD Media, the Disc Image files are greyed out.  The .dvdproj files are not greyed but if I click on them I get a message that "the media type is not supported".   I could play the movies without any problem before I switched to Lion.  The switch was done at the Apple store by an Apple Technician.    Any idea what is happening?

Download and install VLC. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html and get rid of DivX.
