I am running Mt Lion 10.7.5 on a Mac Pro 3 with 2 x 3 Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon Processor and can't install Mavericks? Should I be able to install on this machine?
If it's a 3,1 2008 model, then you can run Mavericks.

You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.

To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

Trying to install Mavericks on Mac Pro series 4,1
Hi all,
I'm trying to install Mavericks on Mac Pro series 4,1 After downloading from App Store, when computer restarts I get grey screen with the "no entry" sign. I have checked compatibility and this model qualifies for Mavericks. Tried a clean install of 10.6.8 first, but no luck. Any ideas?
The Mac has single quad core 2.66, 6 Gb RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT120 graphics. Four hard drives. Three Pro Tools HD cards in PCIe slots.
I also tried this with Mountain Lion, with the same results.Didn't have any luck with removing PCI cards, BUT................ here's how I resolved the issue:
I tried making a USB stick installer. That also failed, but I noticed it couldn't find any hard drives.
I did a search about OSX installer not finding drives and found someone who had that issue and it turned out to be a conflict with the WIFI card (Atheros, not the more common Broadcom)
I checked my System Profiler and sure enough, I have the Atheros.
I just removed the WIFI card and booted into OSX Installer (it was still there after the failed install) and successfully installed Mavericks. -
Since installing Maverick my Mac Pro freezes at least once a day, any advice?.
Since installing OS Maverick my Mac Pro is freezing at least once a day. I can not access 'Force Quit' via shortcut and have to force a shutdown. This has occured when using Firefox, so i tried Safari and Chrome, freezes using all three. It has happened while use software as well eg, Photoshop and Word.
I have installed and run AVG Anti Virus and done a full system check to ensure that there was no virus etc.... all was clear.
I am assuming that it is a bug within Maverick as i experienced none of these problems prior to its installation.
Is anyone else experiencing these issues and does anyone have any advice on prevention?Firstly, uninstall any anti-malware software. It isn't needed and could cause your problem. Also, avoid using Chrome which can also cause problems. Never use more than one browser at a time. Using three is asking for disaster.
I've been using Mavericks on all my computers and have had no problems, so what you describe is unlikely to be a bug. Start by uninstalling the AV software using their uninstaller. Disconnect all third-party peripherals. Then try the following:

1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. 4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -

You have two 6-pin power feeds so you will need a small 450W PSU - those come with two 8-pin and two 6-pin.
Those can often fit in the optical drive bay and cost $25-75 range.
"500W" is NOT for the card! that is the minimum PC PSU only!
when buying look for card that uses only two 6-pin and not an 8-pin power.

Keep in mind that the Mac Pro tower can't feed enough power to the dual 980s, dual 290Xs, or dual 7950s.
We used an auxillary power supply to compensate.

The Radeon R9 280X we used was 'un-flashed.' It booted OS X fine but there was no startup screen. Also, when we checked the speed of CPU-to-PCIe-to-CPU communication, it appeared to be running in PCIe 1.0 mode instead of PCIe 2.0. You'll need to get it all onto one iTunes collection on your Mac Pro, then sync the devices to that. iTunes only lets you transfer purchases from a device, otherwise you have to use third party software.
I guess you could also look into getting iTunes Match. -
Looking for any installation instructions or assistance in adding hardware (MCE internal blu-ray burner multi-drive14x) to my Mac Pro system running the latest version of OS X Mountain Lion.
Ask the vendor if they provide installation instructions. Otherwise, do a Google search for links on installing optical devices in a Mac Pro.

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and (unless otherwise specified in this comment) I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software. -
I have 4GB ram running 10.7.5 . Would installing Mavericks make it easier to run apps such as VMware,Xcode and ADT(Eclipse)?

Then see for yourself how you use your Mac. You can always upgrade at that point.

I haven't re-installed Sophos yet. The Sophos forum are saying there's still an issue, so until I hear that they have resolved it, I'm leaving it uninstalled.
Under Lion, it used to run in the background with minimal resources being used. I hope Sophos can get the issue resolved ASAP for Mountain Lion. -

I cannot change song order on playlists (old or new) with highlight and drag. I have turned off shuffle and highlighted the far left column (up/down arrow) of playlist. My mac pro is running 10.5.8 and am using itunes 10.4. I can't drag and drop "music" to "playlist" but can right click and get the option to "add to playlist." No such option for moving song within playlist, only the up and down arrow which moves song from top to bottom list, so if it is #4 from top it will move to #4 from bottom. Stupid I know. I spent over an hour with Apple support, reinstalled itunes, restarted and rebooted computer. Networked with my laptop which is running 10.6.8 and itunes 10.4 and it can drag and drop. The final Apple support solution was to reinstall my operating system. I would prefer not to. Any other ideas?
After looking at other people's posts, I think it's official: there is a bug. Itunes support said I should not have lost the drag/drop tool and I haven't on the laptop that is running itunes 10.4 and operating system 10.6.8. I chatted with someboby who lost both his drag/drop and side scroll and what we have in common is a wacom tablet for a mouse. My laptop is a wireless mouse. I reinstalled whatever updated driver that wacom has out there, shut the system down for night, hoping for magic, but alas none to be had. So if I want to change song order, I network the laptop and desktop, share the screen on the laptop, drag and drop to my heart's content and curse Apple for making me work this hard to find the tool that was once at my fingertips. Apple also let me know that if I want to share songs in household that the hundreds on songs that were purchased for .99 need to be repurchased for another .30. Maybe Apple is holding my drag/drop tool captive til I pay up the money or Maybe the next update will fix the problem, I for one give up for now.
