Install - Missing Grub, passwd etc, only base-devel category available

So hey,
I'm trying to install Arch and when it comes to packages, I install them and all goes well until I try to set the root password and install the boot loader. I get passwd doesn't exist errors and Grub is apparently not installed. I also can't edit rc.conf because it's considered a new file.
Regardless of which ftp I choose, and even if I choose the CD I'm only getting base-devel as a category to choose packages from, which doesn't include grub. I'm not seeing any reference to this in the manual, so where did I go wrong?

Okay, I just tried it again via FTP and after downloading everything it goes to checking package integrity and fails with
Error: failed to commit transaction (corrupted package)
file usbutils-0.73-5-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz was corrupted (bad md5 checksum)
file wpa_supplicant-0.5.10-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz was corrupted (bad md5 checksum)
Errors occured, no packages were upgraded.
And it ends there, so I'm assuming the real problem is that it never installed anything.
Sever I was using was mirrors.unixheads.org and it failed before off of mirror.cs.vt.edu
Edit: trying to install from the livecd it fails with an error on the first terminal that's lists a bunch of packages and is too long to read. In the output terminal all it says is

Going to reboot and purge the partitions and start from scratch with install from the cd.

[Solved] Weird base-devel update error

It's been a while that for almost all the packages in base-devel yields an error when updating. Please see update output below.
I have tried to empty cache with pacman -Scc, and the pacman log under /var only says that it has installed the packages, without any errors. I have not experienced any issues with the packages though.
The only non-standard thing about my system is that I am using bcache with ext4. I wouldn't guess that that could affect, but I mention it for good measure.
Is there any ideas about what I can do to find out about this?

I am trying to download Adobe reader latest version and when I hit download a bar appears at the top of the screen telling me to install missing plugins but firefox states plugins up to date what can I do?

I am unable to download Adobe reader to update my system as I only have version 7 on my computer. Normally I would be able to download direct from Adobe and my system would update but when I try to download a message bar appears which states on the left hand side "additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page" and on the right hand side there is a button which states "install missing plugins". When I click on the button a dialog box appears which states "no suitable plugins where found with a message next to a manual install button "unknown plugin(application/getplusplusadobe16299)

You can try using this tool to first remove all traces of Reader from your computer:

Then, you can download the full offline Reader installer from

After downloading, restart your computer and run the installer before doing anything else.

I have installed LR 6 upgrade desktop only and won't "go there" on the desktop

I have installed LR 6 upgrade desktop only, 3X now (extracting the files etc) it is not marrying up with LR5 (also an upgrade from LR4..and 3) I am not interested in CC- (2 fold, accumulating cost, ability to edit when power or server is down). I really want access mostly for the added erasing and am frustrated I cannot get to it. I really need to have this on my desktop with its new features and not have to install every time (HDR and merging are there in the old LR5 listed as LR3 catalog-6-3-2)

Just got off the line - after another 1hr & 5 minutes this time - trying to get them to refund. This is day 4 of this saga. I must have made a dozen phone calls & tried the on-line chat thing several times with no response. I did finally get it (LR6 upgrade) started downloading, and then it said it required a newer OS for the Mac it's on. I started looking into that - I have 7.5, and it requires 8.0 or newer. The reviews for the later OS 'upgrades' are poor - twice as many people hate it as like it. I tried to tell Adobe I'm not going to voluntarily walk into that mess. Their sales pitch states they will refund for 30 days. They don't say they are going to make you suffer if you try to get them to follow through. Very poor communications. Toward the end, one finally said he would process a refund, and it would take a week or so. Any other questions? Yes - can you provide me with a phone # to actually contact you in case this doesn't work out any better than it has for the past 4 days?
I told him the 3 #'s I had all lead to dead-ends - "Try Chat". The number he gave me was one of those. I called it again while we were still on-line and got exactly the same thing. (Surprise!!) It will not let you talk to anyone if you are calling about LR, unless you subscribe to that CC scam. There is no option to talk with someone about a billing/refund issue.
I have 19 page transcript of the 'chat' I just had if you are interested. Glad you got your problem fixed. Interesting to know that Adobe had nothing to do with it - you/husband/paid IT help had to figure it out. Good luck down the line, but - I doubt I will ever buy anything from them again.

IPad 2 icons go missing from desktop on rotating basis

As stated, iPad 2 icons go missing from desktop on rotating basis. My iPad was new as of Xmas day. I have NOT synced to iTunes (I don't want to at this time) and I have NOT upgraded the software to iOS 5.0.1 (still on 5.0).
I have downloaded about twenty apps; five of which cost money from Apple's app store.
I don't get it. This is a new device that I have been using for less than ten days for only an hour or two a day; I don't believe new purchasers of iPads should be having to contend with icons going missing (icons take turns disappearing when swiping back and forth between the pages of app icons, the names of icons remain, however).
I have re-booted the iPad. At first the icons all reappear and all seems well until about an hour of usage of opening up various apps and using them, and then the problem re-appears. I have done this three times now, and have resorted to just contending with the problem as the apps will still launch and they run fine, it is just that the full icon doesn't appear (only the name of the app and a missing icon above the name of the app):
I am thinking the cause could be due to one of two problems/issues, but wonder what others' thoughts are.
1). Glitchy App. If it is due to a glitchy app (and does not Apple test these apps before giving the all -clear to be downloaded from the Apple app store?), how best to figure out which one it is?
2) Glitchy OS (iOS 5.0). If this is due to a glitchy 5.0 iOS, is there no other choice than to upgrade to 5.0.1? I really do not want to do that just yet unless it is necessary. [And if it is necessary, would Apple really release a glitchy iOS knowing ahead of time it had problems? Seems strange....]
Anyone got any ideas or have been experiencing the same issue (is it a known issue)?

And if you restore as new, you can re download the apps for free as long as you are using the same apple id.
If it was a single bad app, you would have said so. If it was a common problem with the os, it would have been reported by a zillion users.
I think your os got corrupted. ( potentially from a bad app, or maybe just gremlins). It is a new machine, just start over. Reload the apps in small groups so that if it is a bad app, you can narrow the issue down.

Hi abudardaa, I can only think of one plugin that nearly every page requires...
Do you have the Flash player installed and enabled? You can test on Adobe's page here:

Could you also try Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)

Frankly, this is outrageous. This issue has been open for close to 5 months. Rather than simply updating the SP4 incremental update with the correct files, SAP's brilliant response is to tell us that the file is STILL broken, but ***** you, whenever we fix it it will be the full build only. Well, thanks! That makes it so much easier. Rather than looking at Crystal Reports 2008, maybe it's time to suck it up and look elsewhere,

   Yes, I am downloading it from a Win2003 machine. The browser is IE7.
   I can even see what's inside the m293.cab, and it is not the file mentioned on the error message...
   This is the m293.cab content (one file):

   The file doesn't seem to be corrupted, it just doesnt have what was expected by the installer software.
   I tried downloading it again and had the same result... These are the installation files that I've already tried with the same result:

Pls confirm if you are using Windows 2000 Pro, in this O/S the
hostname is the name of the computer itself. Check the
MyComputer->Properties->Network Identification->Properties, the name you
find under the computer name will be automatically taken while
installation, if it doesn't then there is some error. However the
C:\Winnt\System32\Drivers\Etc\hosts doesn't matter much while installing
iAS 6.0 SP1 or above. Hope this helps

Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm not sure how to connect to the monitor as the only ports available on this model mac are Thunderbolt. The mini display to display cable supplied doesn't seem to work out of the TB port. Do I need to use a Thunderbolt cable + an adaptor?

[SOLVED] question about base-devel

Hi,
Im a newbei to Linux and to Arch.
After my last install, few days ago, i managed to do something that totally wrecked my system.
So I reinstalling. In the Wiki Installation guide, official and unofficial it says
Install the base system
# pacstrap -i /mnt base
I wander why the base-devel was removed.

Hi, I have read alot of threads related to this but I think its not yet clear...My arch installer gives me the "base-devel" from "Select Package Categories"...What I would like to know is the package information of every package on the list. Since my netbook has only 8gb of SSD, I can't waste space for unnecessary packages...:( Thanks in advance

I see there is an 'add more to base-devel' todo list https://www.archlinux.org/todolists/#201 listed but i can't find any discussion about this anywhere.
Are packages that's gonna be added to base-devel also be part of base too?
That seems to be the case, since pacman is in the list but since it's assumed that users have at least the base group installed what is the reason of adding those packages to yet another group?
Pacstraping both base and base-devel would just result to installing some packages twice.

Why are "ed" and "bin86" in base-devel?

It seems to me that unlike the rest of the members of group base-devel, which are commonly used, ed and bin86 are much less often needed as makedeps, and would be better off just being listed in whichever PKGBUILDs actually need them. Agree? Is there something I'm missing about these?

The iPod is brand new, sent to me by Apple as part of the 1st gen replacement programme. I've been using the cable that came with the 1st gen iPod (I bought the first gen second hand) It always worked on my computer with the 1st gen iPod. So I was wondering, do you think I need to replace my cable in order for my PC to recognize my iPod or is it something else?

Try a different cable. And are you connecting directly to your computer or through a USB hub?
