What is the best way to install SN on an external disc? I'm running Lion on an intel iMac.

Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. After formatting is complete quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard being sure to select the external drive as the target.
Note that you will need a Snow Leopard DVD. The above will only work for you if you can boot your computer from a Snow Leopard DVD. If you have a new model that came with Lion pre-installed then the above will not work because a Snow Leopard retail DVD cannot boot your model.

big problem here.
Trying to install Bootcamp on my iMac 27" mid 2010.
The thing is, during the installation, i get the "no bootable device" black screen, and i think i know why... but i need help.
System, a mid 2010 imac, 2TB HD ( Original) and an SSD Samsung 1TB at the Optical Drive SATA connection.
2TB HD is empty atm. OSX Installed on the SSD.
Bootcamp Assistant. Problem nr. 1.
He first did not want to let me create an USB drive. after hacking the assistat, deleting the "Pre" thing in the info.plist, that worked so far.

Then when using the assistant, after choosing partition and so, when the iMac restarts, i get the "no bootable device" notice.
Read a lot, and it seems, that older iMacs, that originaly came with an internal superdrive only can install win 7 from that internal superdrive.
I have the problem, that i had it removed to put the SSD there.
So, when doing an EFI Boot, choosing the win USB Stick or the Win in my External Superdrive, - "no bootable...."
So i searched more. rEFIt should help. Installed, and all, doesnt work, same thing. As soon as i want to boot Win from the CD or Thumpdrive, doesnt work. :-(
In one of the many posts, someone wrote something about starting Shell in rEFIt first, etc... didnt work as well.

sounded promissing. Somehow getting win installation files onto the Created Bootcamp partion with Virtual Mashine. But it didnt work for me.
The VW Fusion ware is different, and non of the steps he discribes works.
So how can i get it working.. it seems like it is somehow blocked to access something from the USB Ports.
Logicaly i would have to get the installation files onto a Internal drive. i Tried to create a partition and copy the Win 7 USB Thump using Disk Util Progeam onto a seperate, internal partition.. but he just does not what to do that... errormessages when trying to copy it, recreate the drive, etc.
So, i do have a 2TB internal HD, which i can use, an external superdrive, USB.Sticks. any gameplan?
And for Error-excluding: i have an original Win 7 64 bit CD, a burnd one and controled the Hash of the loaded ISO, which i downloaded for the USB-Stick.

Can you restore that .iso to the Flash Drive as a CD/DVD instead of an image file?

If you just did upgrade Lion, give it some time. I recall having similar problems and some articles mention heavy background work after install - such as re-indexing for Spotlight etc. I couldn't even copy from folder to folder or e.g. iphoto to folder on the same disk. Went away after a day or two though.
I do however still have a problem with AFP access to one of the lion machines - kills it's network adaptors rather quickly. No luck solving this so far :|

Boot from the original Install disc that came with the computer and then format the drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using the GUID partition. Then you can re-install OS X. If you no longer have the original media call AppleCare with the serial number of the machine (look on the bottom of the stand) and for a nominal fee they will ship you replacement media.
The chances are very good you will have fan problems if you used an off-the-shelf HD, beginning in 2009 Apple began using HD's from vendors that incorporated heat sensors into the HD. If you did not buy the same type of HD your computer will think the HD is overheating causing the fans to run at full speed.

Installing Tiger to a iMac G3-700 SE

Hi everbody,
Recently purchased a DualCore G5 2GHz. Awesome machine. It came with pre-installed Tiger OS. I'd like to upgrade my older computer as well. Therefore I have a few questions, all help is highly appreciated.
1: Can I install Tiger to an iMac G3-700? Or is there a minium hardware requirement?
2: I assume Tiger installer CD is a DVD-Rom. Therefore my iMac was not able to read it. Is there any other way to use the installer CD toward older computers without DVD reading capabilities? What if I cpoy the installer CDs to an externa hard drive, can I run the install from there?
3: Do you think an iMac G3-700 (512mb ram) would be too slow on Tiger OS?

Mac OS X Version 10.4 requires a Macintosh with:
PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
Built-in FireWire
At least 256MB of physical RAM
A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
At least 3.0 GB of available space on your hard drive; 4GB of disk space if you install XCode 2 developer tools
DVD drive for installation (get CD media for $9.95)
The Tiger retail install package and the Tiger install package that ships with a new Mac purchased is on DVD media.
The Tiger install package that ships with a new Mac purchase is model and system configuration specific and cannot be used to install Tiger on another Mac model. If this were possible, it would be a violation of the single user license agreement that you agreed to and against the law.
If your iMac meets all other minimum system requirements except for having a DVD drive, purchase the Tiger retail install package and if the iMac is capable of Firewire Target Disk mode, you can connect your old and new Mac together this way to install the Tiger retail install package on the iMac.
If not, you can use Apple's Media Exchange Program to exchange the Tiger retail DVD media for CD media.

Black/Blank Screen with Boot Camp Win 7 Install on new 27" iMac

I'm having a problem getting Windows 7 on a new 27" iMac and am familiar with the Boot Camp Windows installation process. Here's what I've done...
1. Run Boot Camp from OSX, partition the drive.
2. Insert Win 7 cd, proceed with installation.
3. Computer restarts and the 'preparing for initial setup' message displays with the Win 7 splash screen. When it switches to where it should be displaying the Win 7 desktop, the screen is black.
I can hear the Mac still running, but there's no display. It's like it's waiting for some type of user input for the intial Windows setup (haven't yet entered the key).
I've done a hard shutdown and restarted Windows with the exact same result. After reboot, I get the 'Windows was not shut down properly' message with the 3 safe mode options, where choosing either gets me the 'Windows cannot complete setup in safe mode'. And any key reboots it.
The Mac side still runs fine and holding the option key at start up gives the Mac/Win boot options.
I'm inclined to think that it's a video driver issue since the 27" is brand new. Maybe Apple used a new video card for the larger screen and haven't updated the Boot Camp drivers. I checked on ATI's site for an updated driver for the Radeon HD 4670 they say is in the new 27" model that's currently available. (not the quad core)
Is there any workaround for this? I was thinking of installing Vista instead, and upgrading to Win7 once installed, but if it's a driver thing, it would just be a long way to the same result and could have the same problem with Vista as well.
Any ideas?

I think I figured out what is happening here with the video drivers on the new iMac's and Win7. I believe it's re-directing the video to the mini display-port output when you see the screen go blank. I installed my Win7 x64 with no issues but I had an external monitor hooked up at the time and while it was installing the O/S my iMac went black but everything moved over to my external screen. Once it finished installing then everything went back to normal after a reboot.
Not sure if that helps anyone but pretty sure that's what is going on. So if you have another monitor handy, get the mini display-port adaptor from Apple and connect your external screen before you install Win7. Cheers!
P.S. If you have one of the new iMac's and want to install the latest Radeon drivers (after you have installed Win7 on your iMac), try the following. Download and install the drivers from ATI/AMD directly. They'll try to install and fail (no worries) but now the driver/install files will be unzipped into an ATI folder on your main Windows hard drive.
Now go to this site: http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php and download the tool and use the Vista instructions listed on the main page of the URL above. You shouldn't need to download the MSXML 6.0 and I don't think you need to disable the UAC stuff like they suggest for Vista (I didn't) and it works fine. UAC is not nearly as intrusive on Win7 as it is in Vista so I think that's why it worked for me and pretty sure the MSXML 6.0 is already in Win7. Once the program has modified the mobile Radeon drivers then you can run "setup" from your ATI directory and the new drivers will finally install correctly including the Catalyst Control Center. Voila! I now have 9.10 drivers up and running on my new 27" iMac and working perfectly so far.

Best way to install Leopard on external HD

My iMac came with Leopard. I upgraded to Lion, 3 months ago. I found out that Appleworks doesn't work anymore... very displeased because I always used Mac Strong points (for the past 30 years), which is drawing, like McDraw, McDraw 11, Clarisworks, Appleworks, etc. Apple could have have included a software in iworks to open the numerous works I have done over the years in drawing. Now iDVD doesn't come with Lion anymore. Another blow from Apple!! And iDVD 7.1.2 (after upgrade from Leopard's iDVD) doesn't work too well in Lion... quite a few things are wrong.
Consequently, I want to install Leopard in an external HD, where I could use Appleworks and iDVD.
I have a 1 tera WD Firewire as an external HD. I have tried a few ways to install Leopard on my external HD with no succes.
I have tried "partionning" the external HD, but when it came to "Scan disc image" of Leopard, I had the message: Unable to scan "Install" (Resource busy)
I have tried to install with original Leopard DVD, but after pushing restart (to chose my external HD), then my computer keeps asking me to push restart.
Can anymore can tell me how to properly install Leopard on my external HD?

Connect your WD Firewire drive. Open Disk Utility and check to make sure that it is partitioned as GUID partition scheme (assuming you have an Intel iMac) and is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If not, you will need to repartition and reformat the drive - note that this will erase everything that is on the drive.
Notes:
-If you have an Intel Mac you cannot install OS X to a drive that is partitioned as Apple Partition Map; it must be GUID Partition Scheme.
-Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is the same as the "HFS+" as previously mentioned.
-For the disk to be bootable it must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) not plain Mac OS Extended.
Next, insert your Leopard install DVD in your iMac. If the installer opens, just exit/close the installer window. Do not remove the Leopard install DVD from the drive.
Shut down your Mac. Then restart it by holding down the "C" key while it starts. This will make your iMac start from the Leopard install disk that is in the CD/DVD drive. You should then be able to select your external WD drive and install Leopard there.

There is no longer a way to download a full version of Aperture from Apple's sites, other than the most recent version from the App Store. If you still have the installer disks, try to borrow an external DVD reader or ask a family member/fried with a computer that still has a DVD drive to create a disk image from the DVD. Then copy the Disk Image to a thumbs drive. If a Mac with a DVD drive is available on your local network, you could try DVD sharing.

Trouble installing PSE 8 on imac

I've been trying for three days to install PSE8 on my iMac - no luck. The installation bars go to about 95% of the installation, then the program quits and the disc is ejected. The message says "Failed Installation." Error type 2. I tried removing other Adobe products - still can't install PSE8. I've followed the suggestions made on another post - no better. I've contacted Adobe support , and have been told that the incident report has been escalated to another group of technicians. I haven't heard back from them.
I think that there must be something about PSE8 that isn't compatible with Mac OS 10.6.1. I certainly hope that the problem can be fixed, or this may be the last Adobe product I'll ever purchase.

Everyone really should have a bootable external available. External hard drives are cheap enough today.
All computer hard drives will fail. The only question is when. Each of my two external hard drives has a full, bootable, duplicate copy of ALL of my laptop computer files - the operating system and all applications and all of my work. I update the backup of the operating system and applications once a month. I update all of my work every two hours.
When my internal hard drive eventually fails, I'll just reboot from my external hard drive. Lost time - five minutes.
Every Monday, I go to Bank of America's safety deposit vault and leave there the external hard drive I’ve been using all week. I then take home the external hard drive that has been sitting in that safety deposit box all week. If my house burns down - or if there is a robbery - the worst that can happen is that I'll lose one week's work. I can live with that.
I really don’t need the security of a safety deposit box. It also costs me about $600 a year to rent this box. When I was working, I would take my home backup DVDs to the office and store them there. I also would take my office backup DVDs to my home and store them there. Since I’ve retired, I really don’t have an offsite location to use, so I use a bank safety deposit box. It’s expensive overkill, but it works.
Ironically, the most stable and readable long-term storage medium is writing your work onto paper with ink. The Dead Sea scrolls were created that way 1,800 years ago - and are perfectly legible. I have ten-year-old disks that essentially are unreadable. Being paranoid will insure that your work remains readable as computer technologies change.
I know I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid enough? (Who said that?)
I never thought of creating a new admin user. I didn't think of the problem as being that far upstream.

Installing 10.6 on iMac using MacBook Pro install DVD

I have a 24inch intel 2 core iMac from early 2008 with 10.5.6 installed and I just bought a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. I want to upgrade my iMac to 10.6 but before I purchase it I wanted to check if my apps etc would work.
I used the MacBook Pro dvd to install to an external drive and then I restored that drive. I then migrated my iMac install unto the external 10.6 drive and I am now running from the external drive on the iMac.
All seems to be ok for now but should this work? Do the different cd's have specific drivers or setup specific to the device i.e. might I be missing software or have the wrong software installed and thus invalidating my test?
Yes, I know what I have done is not strictly allowed but there is no other way to test an install without purchasing and I can't afford downtime to fix any problems.

It installs and runs. I will purchase the proper dvd *IF all my apps works ok* otherwise I will not be upgrading anytime soon. I am just trying to ascertain if my test is valid.
It would cost Apple more to package up different dvds for all their products. I imagine they may have different installers though that selects the items.
Either or, it will be hard to say unless I do a diff against fresh installs using both dvd's.

Adobe CS3 install fails on new iMac

I have been unable to install Adobe CS3 Design Standard on my brand new 27" Core 15 iMac. I have followed all the suggestions from Adobe, but only Acrobat installs okay. Can't get Photoshop, Illustrator, or Indesign to install. On the Adobe forums someone told me that CS3 is not compatible with Snow Leopard. However another post quotes Adobe claiming that it is compatible. I am wondering perhaps if it is the installer that doesn't work with Snow Leopard. Is it possible to boot up this new iMac with Leopard, installed on an external drive? If so, perhaps I could then install CS3 on the internal drive and then re-boot to Snow Leopard and all would be well?

The new iMac will not run an earlier OS. Besides, even if it could, Adobe can be very fussy about allowing you to move things from one drive to another. It might see it as an unauthorized installation on a second computer. CS2 runs on mine, but don't know about 3.

Not sure, but you might have to first de-authorize it on the Leopard to get it to install on the Snow. There is a "transfer" option somewhere.

Help installing leopard from external fw dvd

I'm trying to install Leopard on an iMacCore Duo with a broken dvd drive. The hdd has been wiped clean. I've got an external LaCie fw dvd drive hooked up to the iMac. No matter what i do the iMac still gives me the folder with the ?. Holding down the option or C key with the Leopard dvd in the external drive makes no difference. It won't load the dvd. I've also tried using the dvds that came with the iMac. No luck. Not sure how to put OSX on this iMac.

Have you tried using your installer disc on another Mac just to be sure there isn't a problem with the DVD? I would also contact LaCie tech support. I would be surprised if the device was not bootable. Do you know if the drive is even working? That is are you able to mount the DVD on the Desktop (assuming you can get to the Desktop.)
You should be able to boot the computer from an external FW hard drive if you have a bootable system on the drive that's compatible with your iMac. You also may be able to install OS X on the iMac from another Mac with a FireWire port by using Target Disk Mode.
BTW, you aren't trying to use the Leopard installer discs that came with your MBP to install Leopard on your iMac, are you? If so that won't work. The MB{P's discs are machine specific and will not likely boot the older iMac.

I heard a rumour that I might not be able to install Leopard on my iMac G5 currently running fine on 10.3.9 Panther, at least, not before I install Tiger. Is this true? I had hoped I could just buy Leopard and install that. Surely I don't have to track down a copy of Tiger and install that first?
Only reason particularly for upgrade is have bought some new iPods and they won't work with Panther :-(!!
Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

Just install Leopard directly. I suggest an Archive and Install and then migrate your stuff back. Many old apps and programs will not run with Leopard. Sherlock, to name one. Also be careful of your 3rd party apps. Some have been trouble.
Use SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner to make a full bootable backup of Panther and then test it by booting into it. You then have the best of both worlds - a dual-boot system with Panther and Leopard.
If you partition your external drive for Panther in a small partition and leave the rest for TimeMachine backups, you are really set.
I have my external TM drive with Tiger in a small partition. It boots and once and a while I run it to keep it from getting lonely

is there a way that Ieopard can be installed via an external dvd drive... My Imac 15 inch won't read the install dvd and I read somewhere that it's possible... Is there some truth to this? If so can someone give me instructions

Yes, you can as long as the external DVD drive is bootable and in a Firewire enclosure because you cannot boot a G4 Mac from a USB device.
Be sure you computer meets the requirements to install Leopard:
System requirements
You must have a Macintosh computer with:
• an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor
• a DVD drive
• built-in FireWire
• at least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended for development purposes)
• a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
• at least 9 GB of disk space available, or 12 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools

Failure to install 10.2 on iMac flat panel

Via Target mode (the imac's own cd drive is not working) I have erased the HD on the iMAc using Disk Util on a universal 10.2 install cd and then installed 10.2. The imac will now not start up past flashing question mark folder. Inspecting the HD via Target mode and running 10.2 disk util repair and verify from the remote mac shows no problems with the HD. The imac will boot into open firmware but not into single user mode. PRAM, NVRAM etc all reset and also power manager.
Am I looking at a mobo problem? I have no other universal system disks to use. The imac was originally running Tiger, but I cannot find those disks. There should not be a problem running 10.2 on a virgin HD should there? All traces of Tiger should have been erased by disk util

Is that the case even though I have wiped the disk using 10.2 disk utility pre-install?
Yes. An iMac with a CPU speed of 1GHz or faster or the last 800MHz model can't start up into Mac OS X 10.2 from the retail package.
The installer allowed me to install onto the disk although I did so from a G3 powerbook (white).
If the Installer is run through FireWire Target mode, it thinks it's installing onto an external hard drive and can't check the computer's specifications.
