Install on external hard drive?

If I buy and download Lion, can I install it on an external hard drive or do I have to install it on the drive it was downloaded to?
Also how do I make a DVD copy for myself?

how do i install an external hard drive to my powerbook G4?

Buy an external FireWire drive (and FireWire cable if you don't have a spare or the drive doesn't come with one). Then, just plug it in. Not much for installing.
If you mean replacing your internal drive, that's another matter entirely.

  • How do I install Seagate external hard drive to MacBook?

I have a MacBook that I bought in 2009. I have lots of photos and documents that need to be carried over to an external hard drive. However, after buying a hard drive at the apple store my computer will not install it. It won't comply with the software. Any suggestions?

That drive requires Mac OS X v10.6 or later and USB 3.0 >  http://store.apple.com/us/product/HB419ZM/A/seagate-1tb-backup-plus-usb-30-porta ble-external-hard-drive-v2-for-mac?fnode=5f

  • Safari crashes after installing iomega external hard drive

I've just installed the iomega desktop external hard drive with firewire and usb 2.0. I'm presently connected to my computer by the USB port. Everytime I go to access Safari or Mail they quit on me after a few seconds. I've now disconnected the drive from my computer and it's fine. I did to a Disk Utility repair after the installation but that didn't help. Is there something I neglected to do? Is there a problem between Mac and Iomega? Should I use the firewire instead?

Are you saying that your internal HD doesn't have an operating system on it either, meaning you can't boot your iMac at all? Or that the external was also named "Macintosh HD" in which case, having been erased and reformatted (hopefully with a GUID partition table), you'll need to clone your internal to it once again.

  • Mountain Lion is missing, after installing an external hard drive and Carbon Copy Clone.

I have a mid-2007 desktop iMac Model MA877LL, 2.4 ghz/1gb/320gb, with 4 GB memory, upgraded to Mountain Lion 9/7/2012 at an Apple store (now 10.8.5).  I just installed a new external hard drive Fantom Drive 1T G-Force Mega Disk Firewire 800, then installed Carbon Copy Clone successfully.  However, I could not get the clone to boot from the backup volume.  Mountain Lion showed in both Macintosh HD and External Hard Drive at that point.  After working through many steps with CCC, trying to get it to boot, the final suggestion was to try installing Mountain Lion onto the backup disk via the Mac App Store Installer.   As my Mountain Lion was installed at an Apple store, there's no record of it on line and I can't find an installer, although I've been doing updates as they're issued.  Per article, "OS X:  Installing OS X on an external volume", I erased and reformatted the storage device.  Now, checking my Macintosh HD, Mountain Lion is gone.  How do I get it back?

  • ITunes New Install into External Hard Drive

    Hi There!
I downloaded itunes (itunes.dmg) install from the Apple site & when I tried to open it into my external hard drive, the disk utility window opens up. I've always had problems opening up downloads from emails & other sources & must be needing something in addition to open them up properly. My Windows computer easily opens anything up. WHAT ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE IS RECOMMENDED TO PROPERLY OPEN UP DOWNLOADS/ATTACHMENTS?
    Thanks.
    Rick

when I tried to open it into my external hard drive
    What does that mean?
You should not need any other programs to open typical downloads. A .dmg file is as typical as it gets on a Mac.
If you double-click on a .dmg file and Disk Utility opens up, you may have inadvertently assigned .dmg files to be opened by Disk Utility. Try this. Right (control) click on the .dmg file. Select Get Info from the contextual menu. In the Get Info window, look down to where it says Open with. It should say DiskImageMounter. If it does not, select DiskImageMounter. Then click Change All... button to make all .dmg files open correctly.

  • I can't install the external hard drive

I got an ASUS hard drive for Christmas, but when I try to install it so I can burn things, it says "you can't open the application "setup.exe" because Microsoft Windows applications are not supported on OS X." Or it'll say "There is no application set to open the document."

  • LR 4 for Mac not installing on external hard drive

I have a Mac LR2 installed in a external drive. I just upgraded to LR4 and want to install it in the same external drive and upgrade LR2, but it would allow me to install in the MacBook HD. If I install in the Mac HD would it create an issue with LR2?
    Thanks

You don't have to do anything to the drive to make it Bootable. Other then installing OS X on it.
Boot your system from the Online Internet Recovery system, Hold down the Command+Option+r keys until you see a spinning globe in the center of the screen. It is best to have the system Wired to your Internet Router for this. Have the External drive connected to the system before you start it up
Once the system starts from over the internet use Disk Utiltiy to Partition the drive as One partition with a format of Mac Extended (Journaled).
Then once that is done exit DU and select Reinstall Mac OS X. Either Lion or Mt Lion will be downloaded from the internet, whichever originally came on your Mac, and when the download is finished the install willl start.
Oh and yes you need to point the install to the External drive. You do that before the download starts. Just follow the on screen instructions.

  • External Hard drive- NTFS error

I get this error when trying to install an external hard drive that is formatted in windows
NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk3s1 at /Volumes/My Passport because the following problem occurred:
    dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/local/lib/libfuse.2.dylib
How do I fix this so I can access the files on my external hard drive?

Use the Go to Folder command in the Finder's Go menu to navigate to /Volumes/, drag all of the folders inside to the desktop, unmount it, and then mount it again. This is not a problem with the drive itself nor a permissions issue.

  • Moved music folder to to an external hard drive - now iTunes wont open!!

I purchased and installed an external hard drive - I moved my music there with thoughs of upgrading my cpu in the future. When I tried to open iTunes it stated that the folder path contains an invalid character. - I moved everything back and it still does not work - the folder path that it is looking for no longer exists. I have tried to recreate the folder, I have tried to reinstall iTunes but I get the same message. I tried to uninstall iTunes with the hope that I could re-install but that also would not work.
I have checked the posts and cannot find this particular problem - can anyone help?

Try putting the files back where they were before you moved them, then follow the steps in this Apple document -> iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Moved Itunes to external hard drive & now Ipod not showing up in itunes?

I recently installed an external hard drive and moved Itunes and all my music to it. Now when I plug in my Ipod, Itunes doesn't recognize it. And it doesn't show up in my computer, but the pod says its "connected". It does show up in the USB devices and so does the hard drive, but they are listed seperately. But both devices are plugged into the same USB spliter.
    what is happening?
    help!!!

    Hi, BreezerSB2.
It sounds like you may not have followed the instructions described in this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
If that's not possible - or you don't want to do so - and the music files are in fact on your external drive, you can add them to your iTunes Library by referring to this article 's Add to Library section.

  • External Hard Drive will not power up

I've had a Toshiba External HDD for 2 years now and it was working perfectly. It has a blue light which comes up when powered up. Now it has suddenly stopped working.
When I connect it to the AC Adapter, there is no light, no power. The AC Adapter is a DURA MICRO INC Adapter Model DM5127. The light on the Adapter itself comes on
when I plug it in to the power but the moment I plug in the other end to the HDD, even that light goes off. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this . Could it be
a problem with the Adapter itself?
Any tips will be gratefully received as how I could go about resolving this. Almost all my data is in the HDD.

Hello, I helped install several external hard drives which also use that same model of Dura Micro power supply.
Unfortunately for 2 of these power supplies, they didn't seem very dura-ble, for they each developed a similar problem. The status LED on the hard drive would light up and stay on as normal, but the hard drives themselves would no longer power up. I tried a new adapter of the same model and the drive came back to life.
My guess is it may be your power supply, if you purchase replacements I'd get more than one.

  • I can not find my photos from external hard drive

I installed seagate external hard drive as my back up and time machine is on. I went to iPhoto and I am not able to see my albums.  Did I lost all my pictures?   How can I retrieve it and put them back on my iPhoto?  The external HD is being used as the main portion and it shows that there is no photos.  I am using iPhoto 9.6.1.

No idea what you mean by "main driver". Are you saying that you copied/backed up your internal hard drive to the Seagate and are now using that as your boot up?
Also do not know what you mean by "drag/copy master to iPhoto".
Your photos should be contained in your iPhoto library (your Home folder > Pictures)
To make it clear for us:
are you using your regular internal hard drive to work with?
do you have iPhoto there and is it working with your photos?
did you use Time Machine to back up your system to the Seagate?

  • How do I tie in an external hard drive into ITunes?

How do I tie in an external hard drive into ITunes?  My Mac hard drive is almost full of movies and I want to install an external hard drive and tie into ITunes so I can see the moves and play them on my apple TV.

Drag the iTunes library in the Music item of the Finder's sidebar to it, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and point it there.
