Install on Imac from external DVD

Hi
I have a 2.16GHz intel core Duo Imac running 10.6.5 and I seem to be having niggly problems with it ie plug-ins quit in Safari etc. I have done all the normal things to put these right but they have not worked. Someone on the forum suggested that I reinstall Snow Leopard from the original disk so I thought I would give it a try, but have the following problems.
1. I am not quite sure how to do this without losing all my programmes etc. ie Quark, CS4 Creative Suite and many others.
2. Because my Imac DVD drive will not eject DVDs I am using an external one Freecom DVD RW recorder LS pro external double layer DVD+/-RW/USB 2.0/Firewire/Lightscribe. I have it connected via Firewire. It will open the snow leopard disk but when I go to utilities restart I cannot restart from it. Perhaps I am being impatient but did not start after five minutes just blank screen and DVD revving occasionally. The 10.5 disk will boot the machine fine but not the 10.6.
3. I have a much newer Imac on my network using 10.5. Is there any way I can use this to reinstall 10.6 on the older Imac if necessary?
4. Would it make any difference if I connected the external drive using USB?
Any help would be appreciated.
Chris

They have to be the same vintage to work over the network or otherwise.

Sounds like it might need a new clock battery or optical drive.
It should also have at least 1 GB of RAM.
How much free disk space does it have, and how big a hard drive does it have?
4. Would it make any difference if I connected the external drive using USB?
Usually Firewire boots faster. I think the problem is the clock battery is getting old. Boot times may have problems once the machine reaches 4 years old, as then the clock battery gets weak and can't tell it how to boot things. This may also explain the optical drive failure.

  • Boot iMac from external DVD drive

    Hi guys!
I need to boot my iMac to my system disc using an external DVD drive (USB).
I put the DVD in the drive and it shows up in Prefs as a bootable disc but when I select it and tell it to restart it gives me the error beep. I've tried rebooting and holding down "option" but the system disc in the external doesn't show up.
I'm on 10.3.9 on a 17" G5 iMac 1.8GHz. All ancient history I know but I really only use it for surfing the web and iTunes. I'm trying to upgrade to 10.5 but I need to get it to boot to the DVD drive using the original system disc first.
I've checked into firmware updates and done tons of searches but I can't see why this Mac won't boot from a USB drive. Am I missing something?
    Thank you!!

Intel Macs can boot from USB external drives (including optical drives) just fine. It's the older PowerPC Macs that usually need external drives to be FireWire, in order for it to be bootable.
You may want to look at Mac-oriented vendor OWC to see what they have

  • Installing Windows 7 from external DVD drive

I removed the internal DVD drive and replaced it with an OCW SSD on my 15" MBP. I used Disk Utility to format it to MS-DOS(FAT). I bought Windows 7 and downloaded the .iso file from the website. I used Disk Utility to burn the .iso image onto the disk. Since BootCamp won't recognize my external DVD drive I installed rEFIt, so after I restarted twice it came up with a prompt to boot from Windows install CD. I click the the icon, the screen goes black, and then the DVD drive stops spooling and I have to hold the power button down to restart it normally. What way is there to install WIndows 7 from an external DVD drive?

Maybe use Winclone (Mac app)? Others here know more about using Winclone than I do.
I use Casper (Windows app) for cloning an internal Windows partition to an external drive, so a Casper restore would be just the opposite, but requires a CD drive which you are now lacking.

  • Install Windows XP from external DVD

Hi all. A question: I can install Windows XP from an external DVD drive (usb)? My original superdrive is dead from long time ago. Thanks a lot.

If you use something to make a ISO of the Windows disk it might be possible to load it into a virtual machine software running in OS X.
    Haven't tried it.
    Interesting Idea.

  • Restore iMac from external dvd drive

I'm giving my iMac to a friend. But my superdrive is is failing to read the restore disks, but not after wiping the HD.
Now my G4 iMac wont do a thing.
I had assumed that my external DVD drive would do, but it stops on the small mac icon and goes no further.
Is there a work-around I can do? You'd be helping a retired photographer to leave his ancient PC and give my gorgeous G4 iMac a new home. While I get on with my iMac 20' intel.
The G4 last run on Tiger.

Put the Intel into Target Disk Mode with the G4's installer disc in the drive.
[How to use FireWire target disk mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583] includes description of hardware and software requirements.
Boot the G4 while holding down the option key. If you're lucky the installer disc will appear as a boot option and you can reinstall the OS onto the G4's drive.
Oh, connect the two computers with a Firewire cable!

HOLD ON GUYS THE PROBLEME IS MINOR AND THE SOLUTION SIMPLE, THE G585 WIN8 IS NOT THAT BAD AFTER U READ THIS OR GO DIRECTLY TO THE LENOVO SUPPORT LINK BELOW AND APPLY THE FIX..
I had the same problem with my new G585, I couldn't get any windows 8 upgrades done by undoing and reversing to pre-upgrade state right after reboot which made my system unstable and very slow to use and windows8 very buggy, it was very frustrating but I didn't give up and kept trying to upgrade with no success to the point I started to think that either something was wrong with my unit even though I had it for less than 2 weeks since I bought it from best buy or Lenovo effed up this time with this sluggish configuration and that I have to add RAM and see if its any better b4 returning it to them for servicing.. well IT TURNS OUT YES LENO EFFED UP BUT NOT WITH THE CONFIGURATION BUT WITH SOME BLOATWEAR CALLED NITRO PDF THAT WILL NOT LET U UPGRADE WINDOWS8 AND SPESIFECLY THE UPGRADE PART OF NITRO PDF FROM TRIAL VERSION TO FULL VERSION CALLED NITRO PDF PRO 7 OR SOME SH** LIKE THAT, THE GOOD PART IS NITRO IS OFFERING A DOWNLOAD FIX U CAN DO WHEN YOU USE THE BLOATHWEAR FOR THE FIRST TIME OR BETTER YET BY DELETING THAT APP AFTER THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO UPGRADE YOUR WINDOWS8 OS AND YOU WILL BE AMAZED BY HOW MANY UPGRADES YOU WILL GO THRU BUT YOUR SYSTEME WILL START RUNNING FASTER AND SMOOTHER FROM THE FEW FIRST UPGRADE. LET ME KNOW HOW IT TURNS OUT WITH YOU.

  • Format iMac from external dvd-rom

My DVD-ROM kicked the bucket today & to top it off, my AppleCare expired end of 2009. Replacing the ROM is out of the question (for now) as I was quoted approximately $500 for a replacement.
I need to re-install Leopard & would like to know, is it possible to connect my other iMac & use it's DVD-ROM drive to re-install Leopard?

    blimpmedia wrote:
Is there anywhere online I can buy spare parts for my iMac?
The Apple service centre wants to charge me $400 to replace the DVD-ROM, and $150 for labour.
I don't know if these people ship to your country, but they have reasonably-priced parts:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Mac-Parts/iMac-20%22-2.16-GHz
They also have step-by-step instructions for a number of replacement operations:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iMac-Intel-20-Inch-EMC-2105-and-21 18-Optical-Drive-Replacement/1090/1
WARNING: An iMac can be a little tricky to work on. For example, there are some parts that have to be coated with heat grease during assembly. Another thought: that disk drive is probably not specific to Apple. If you can find a competent computer repair shop, you could refer them to those repair instructions and let them do the replacement.

  • Installing from external dvd rom

    Hi,
Is it possible to install solaris 10 from external dvd rom. If yes then how?
    Thanks,
    Javed

I just did this on a Sun E420, attaching a SCSI DVD-ROM to the external SCSI connector, so that it's on a different SCSI bus.
Did a probe-scsi-all to see the device.
Did a devalias cdrom to see what that path looks like
Did a devalias dvdrom <path to DVD like the cdrom>
    boot dvdrom (worked)
to make the device alias permanent (devalias setting is lost after reset or power down) use nvalias command (like the devalias) and make sure the use-nvramrc? OBP env variable is true. (see online OBP docs).
If you have a x86/x64 system, this won't help.

I do not know about Disk Warrior but if you have a compatible OSX on an external HDD you certainly can boot the MBP.  Use startup manager:

  • Trouble installing Vista 64 from USB DVD

I am trying to install Vista64 from external DVD thru USB.  It boots from the DVD and starts the install process, but after I click on 'Install Now', it puts a screen that says I need a driver for my external DVD before it can proceed.  Where do I get this?
    Thanks,   I have an X61s.

It is an issue iwth our older EFI 1.x (or EFI32) and Vista SP1 64-bit that needs UEFI 2.x (EFI64).
Sort of the same issue as the Nvidia 8800GT had to come out in two flavors.
I have Windows already installed, older pre-SP1, and from there I can install SP1 DVD.
At this point, I much prefer Windows 7 over Vista x64 SP1 or SP2(beta). Just runs better. Last day tomorrow maybe to download.

  • I want to upgrade iMac to Snow Leopard, can I use the (DVD-Mac OS X 10.6.3) that I got with the 15" MacBook Pro that totally died, and upgrade iMac from that DVD

I want to upgrade my iMac to Snow Leopard, can I use the (DVD-Mac OS X 10.6.3) that I got with my purchase of the 15" MacBook Pro that totally died, and upgrade the iMac from that DVD that came with the laptop ?   Thanks

No, that 10.6.3 DVD is system specific to the MacBook Pro.
You need a Snow Leopard Upgrade > Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)
or if a MobileMe users > Apple throws MobileMe users a free version of Snow Leopard

  • Ibook g3 M2453 boot from external DVD drive

    Hi, I'm Simon from Germany.
I have an iBook M2453 Mac OS X and a lot of dvds.
But the iBook has no DVD drive. So I bought an external DVD drive. But no matter what I do during boot (press the C key or alt)
I can not boot from external DVD drive.
    Please help me
    Thank you.
    Simon.
PS: I have translated the text using Google translate

    Hi Simon,
the iBook is able to boot from USB, but this is not expected behaviour and not supported by Apple.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20554
There are some external enclosures that do the trick.
But only when you press ALT after Power on. (Select a startup volume via the Startup Manager)
External enclosures with Prolific PL-3507 chipset (Firewire/USB Combo)
You will find them on Ebay Germany
    I have a Delock IDE>USB 2.0 enclosure for 2,5" HDs
    http://www.delock.com/produkte/gruppen/Geh%C3%A4use/Delock_25_external_enclosure _USB20_42365.html?setLanguage=EN
    that works also.
    Hallo Simon,
