Install Options for Tiger

Hello All:
I want to upgrade my current system (OS X 10.3.9) to Tiger -- something I've never done before. Over the course of trying to read up on and prepare for this procedure, I've noticed mention of a couple of options (maybe there's more I don't know of) that the installer must choose from: "Archive and Install" and "Clean Install" (I may not have the wording exactly right). I don't really know much about these options and the circumstances for selecting one or the other, but presumably making the the proper choice here is critical. I was wondering if someone could please explain these install options -- and any others that may exist alongside them -- and advise me on what might be the proper choice for upgrading my machine. (If I need to provide more system information to facilitate an effective response, please let me know...) Thanks much for any help!

You can start with this article. In your case you would likely choose between an Upgrade Install and an Archive and Install. Here's how the latter is performed:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
An Archive and Install would be preferred because it installs a fresh copy of OS X as opposed to a mixture of old and new as in an Upgrade install. It's less likely to cause problems, but it may require a liitle more effort because items stored in the /Library/ folder are not preserved and may need to be moved by hand from the old system to the new one.

  • Install options for Leopard

I have a Mac Mini (1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo with 512MB memory) and am running 10.4.11, I have just bought Leopard today to install.
I've always backed up my Home Folder on an external hard drive and am ready (I think!) to install Leopard.
The guy in the shop where I bought Leopard told me its better to do an "archive and install" rather than the default install.
Is there a reason for this? can I not just do the default install - or am I risking losing 3rd party applications or other configurations that I have on my Mac currently? Why did he suggest this?
Any help is appreciated - as Ive never updated a system on a Mac before!
    Thanks

I did the Archive and Install on a couple of computers and there were not any applications I needed to re-install, including iLife 08 or any others. The only files replaced on the computer are System files and those are saved in the Previous System folder. Because it will make copies of those, it will take up more disk space. On my computers that was about 4GB, but the Leopard install will let you know if you don’t have enough disk space to install before it begins.
Because the system 10.4.11 system files are replaced with the Leopard system files, they need to have the permissions reassigned. I ran Repair Permissions from the Leopard install disk (after the Language screen the next screen has a Utilities menu with Disk Repair) before and after the installation. I don’t know if that was overkill, but it can’t hurt, other than taking some time.
Be aware that Repair Permissions takes much longer with Leopard than it did with Tiger. Repair Permissions on my computers currently takes about 25 minutes, but I’ve seen reports of taking as long as 40 minutes. Also the Repair Permissions progress bar seems to get stuck, reporting “1 minute remaining“ for about 5 minutes and then reports a more realistic time remaining. This has been reported by several users, some who quit the Repair Permissions after a few minutes, thinking it was in an infinite loop (which happens to be Apple’s street address in Cupertino, “1 Infinite Loop”).

  • Anyone know where I can get an "Archive and Install" article for Tiger?

I need to do an archive and install on my Macbook (OS 10.4.11), which runs at the speed of molasses. I've never done it before and am very nervous. Can anyone point me to an article on the website that will tell me how to do it? Thanks!!

Tony: Thanks very much! I looked at the article, which warned me that I should attempt simpler solutions first.
The computer, which we got in 2006, has been slow from the beginning and has gotten worse and worse (despite the installation of a new motherboard). I had it looked at for precisely this problem while it was sitll under AppleCare, but the Apple Store I took it to claimed there was nothing wrong with it.The reason I've been assuming I need to do an A&I is that an Apple tech thought that would speed up the computer, which has been getting slower and slower on all counts--rarely crashes, but (for example), now it's so slow to recognize a perfectly good wireless signal that it sometimes takes a full minute before the "You are not connected to the Internet" disappears and Safari (or Firefox) connects.
Do you think the tech who advised me most recently was right, or do you think I should look for another cause before attempting an A&I? I've looked at the Apple article about isolating problems before trying an A&I, <http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1388>, but that article only addresses solving specific issues (e.g., balky startups, kernel panics, etc.), rather than the global problem of slowness this computer has had almost from the day it arrived.
Thanks again for the first article link, and for any suggestions you may have--much appreciated.

  • Install problem for Tiger from 10.4.11 to 10.4.

Hello, I am trying to install the update from 10.4.11 to 10.4.9 so I can use Final Cut 6.0 without going to Leopard yet.
Requirements seem to suggest I can do this, however when I go to install I get the message that my drive -"volume does not meet the requirements for this update".
    Any help?

    HI Russell,
As Klaus1 mentioned, you are already good to go with 10.4.11.
Here are some links you might like to check out for tips and tutorials for FCPro6:

Since video files can increase in size fast, keep an eye on your available disk space. Select your MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, press Command + I which will prompt your Get Info window. Click the General tab. You will see Available and Capacity. Don't allow your free drive space to fall below 15% of the total drive.

  • How or where can I purchase install disks for Tiger?

I have an older iMac (late 2006) which is running Tiger 10.4.11. I need to wipe the hard drive but don't have disc #1 of the install discs. Where can I purchase the install discs, or is there another way I can wipe it?

You can simply upgrade and install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
    Purchase here..

  • Bbc I-Player & Adobe flash for Tiger

Bbc iplayer now requires update to 10.1 but my Tiger system Mac G5 wont install Adobe flash archived version on list. Can someone please tell me the correct procedure to install iplayer for Tiger software ? Many Thanks.

If you want the last version of Flash Player for PPC Macs, you need to go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html  and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. The first one on the list, Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
But this may still not help with BBC iPlayer, which seems now to require an Intel Mac (it always did, but PPC Macs worked anyway!). It could also have something to do with Safari. I can no longer watch Flash videos on the BBC website or on iPlayer with Safari, only when I use TenFourFox (the PPC version of Firefox), despite the fact that they both use the same version of Flash Player.

  • From Forms Product Management - New Forms/Reports install option

Oracle Product Management are pleased to announce the release of Forms/Reports Services only download and install option of Oracle Application Server 10g.
This provides an option to the EE to install those components related only to running Forms and Reports.
To download please go to http://otn.oracle.com/software/products/forms/ and please feel free to post any comments.

    Forms Product Management

I did create a posting on OTN almost a year ago asking if/when 9iAS light version (forms/reports/graphs only) will be available at a reduced cost.
Oracle now announced (and also proved my claims that it was not a technical but marketing decision not to make forms/reports part of iAS a separate product) the separate download/install option for forms/reports services.
My original posting attracked more than 100 folks (including Shay, Frank and Grant) but was not fruitful to convince Oracle to make forms/reports services a separate product targeted for the small companies, who might not need/use the rest of the 9iAS framework. I believe, seeing one side of the coin and enforcing your opinion by ignoring the cry of many others (including many ODTUG members) is not a wise solution for your existing small business and niche market (using Oracle db and tools for very specific purposes such as simulations, etc on intranets - and operating under strict security protocols not to open up to internet) customers.
Grant and Shay repeatedly wrote on this forum and presented via whitepapers, etc. that forms/reports services are not fading away and it is a complementary solution to JDeveloper and emphasized that JDeveloper is not the replacement of forms/reports services. This news was very good for existing forms/reports developers.
Given that forms/reports services is now separately available, why not making Forms/Reports Designer and Forms/Reports services (only) part of iAS a separate product? as Oracle did the very same with JDeveloper?

  • Windows 7 upgrade: discs will include the option for a 32 to 64-bit upgrade via a clean install?

I would like to know whether the Lenovo Windows 7 upgrade discs will include the option for a 32 to 64-bit upgrade via a clean install?  I called Mentor today and was told the answer is no, but I was hoping someone here could tell me differently.
If "no" is truly the answer, I would like to voice my complaint: The upgrade discs from Microsoft (i.e. the retail upgrade discs) include both the 32 and 64-bit versions, so I don't completely understand why Lenovo's upgrade program doesn't offer the same thing.  I purchased my T500 in August, and back then Vista Ultimate 64 was not offered, so I chose Vista Ultimate 32 thinking that I could later upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate 64.  This assumption was based off of the info. on Microsoft's website indicating that all upgrades would contain the 32 and 64-bit versions.  I even customized my computer with 4 gigs of RAM thinking that I could take advantage of the extra gig once I installed Windows 7 64.
I don't understand what Lenovo or Mentor Media have to gain by restricting a 32 to 64-bit install.  I voiced this opinion to Mentor Media over the phone, who responded by saying that I should be happy since I am receiving a "free" upgrade.  I don't think this is an accurate assessment for two reasons: (1) I had to pay $17.03 for shipping, and I still haven't received the upgrade and (2) The total cost of my computer was almost $3,000, and the purchase was made a mere few weeks before Windows 7 was released.  $3,000 is a lot of money.  I waited for the details of the Windows 7 Upgrade Program to be announced BEFORE purchasing my machine.  When I finally bought my computer I accounted Windows 7 into the price I was paying.  In addition, when I bought this computer I did so expecting good customer service as a given.  Not providing a 64-bit upgrade without a rational explanation as to why does not qualify as appropriate customer service.
As most of you know, 4 gigs of RAM is useless with a 32-bit OS.  Also, NOW Lenovo is building new T500s with the option of having Windows 7 Ultimate 64 (why wasn't Vista Ultimate 64 offered when I bought my computer???).  And the price for choosing Windows 7 Ultimate 32 is EQUAL to the price for choosing Windows 7 Ultimate 64, which proves that there is no cost difference.  I just want to know what Lenovo has to gain by denying customers a 64-bit upgrade?  There would really be no additional cost since as I mentioned before, Microsoft's retail upgrade includes the 32 and 64-bit OS on one disc.  If anything I would think that it's costing Lenovo money to strip the 64-bit install from the upgrade discs.
Can anyone please address my problems?  Do you think there is anyone at Lenovo I could contact to voice my opinions?  I have been a loyal Thinkpad customer for over 5 years now, and I expect better from Lenovo.  Thank you for reading!
moderator note: core question add to title, as stated in the forum rules and it will help others too answer your questions.

Is there any way to request a 64-bit OEM?  Why should Lenovo care whether I want a 32-bit or 64-bit as long as it's the same edition (Ultimate edition)?
if your system shipped with a 32-bit version of vista then you will be sent 32-bit windows 7 upgrade media.   the reason for this is two-fold.
first, because this is upgrade media, it's impossible to install a 64-bit version of windows over a 32-bit version.   doing so would require a clean installation and upgrade media simply won't allow this.   this is the case with retail media, too.   if you had 32-bit vista installed and wanted to upgrade it to 64-bit using retail media, you'd have to wipe your system or set up a dual-boot.
second, the COA (certificate of authenticity) on the bottom of your system is for vista.   because of this, your new license is of an upgrade from vista to 7.   this is how microsoft licenses it and it is their policy, not lenovo's.   microsoft's policy with OEMs is that you must install vista first, then upgrade to 7 (unless, of course, you purchased your system native with 7 on or after the 22nd).   since your original lenovo preload is of a 32-bit OS, the issue becomes circular and you'll have to refer again to the first reason.
i understand your frustration and wish this stuff were made easier for everyone.   it's repetative reading post after post of people with 4GB installed who don't understand the limitations of a 32-bit environment.   i wish both manufacturers and users switched to 64-bit OSes sooner.   the same thing happened when the industry went from 16-bit windows 3.11 to 32-bit windows NT4/95 and limitations went from 16KB all the way up to 4GB (which, in 1995, no one thought we'd ever exceed).   the difference is that people were complaining on BBSes over 14.4k modems instead of on GUI-based forums using broadband connections.   times sure have changed.

  • Install "use typical installation options for a stand-alone primary site" All SQL Prerequisites Failed. Checks SQL before SQL is even installed?

So I select the install option to "Use typical installation options for a stand-alone primary site" which says it includes installation of SQL 2012 SP1 on the local server.
But then during the prerequisite checks it fails every SQL check.
Is it just me or a giant catch 22? Am I missing something here? How is this over looked if it is what it looks like? Why even have this simple install option if it can't work?

Take a look at my R2 install guide. This is for a stand alone primary. As Torsten states you pretty much need SQL installed and configured correctly prior to running the ConfigMgr install - along with  a few other pre-reqs.

  • How do I get administrative priveleges to install optional plug-ins for cs5

how do I get administrative priveleges to install optional plug-ins for cs5 and or how to install these optional plugins thanks

To add to Mylenium's reply, here's how to do it on Windows and this is what microsoft website says:
Why do I have to be an administrator to install a program?
Only administrators can make changes that will affect everyone who uses the computer, such as installing software and hardware and changing security settings.
If the program you are trying to install or run says you  must have administrator rights, but you are already an administrator on the computer, right-click the installation icon for the program, and then click Run as administrator. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
If the program installs but does not run, right-click the program icon, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab, select the Run this program as an administrator check box, and then try to run the program.

Which version of Acrobat are you using?

I fresh installed LR 3.2 on a Windows 7 computer to try out tethering (which worked fine), but then tried to export the photos, but I don't have any options for exporting to non-harddrive based locations. The "export to" drop down at the top of the export page only has "hard drive" in it. The plugin manager says that plugins for SmugMug, Facebook, etc are all enabled.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

I found too that the publishing services work differently than the plug-ins.  Not as intuitive, but work well just the same,  For me I had to do the "set-up" for the Facebook publishing service a couple of times.  I think this may have more to do with the Facebook security settings than with LR.
