Install OS 9.2.2 on eMac G4

I found a great eMac G4 800 MHz with system 10.4.6 at a yard sale. Unfortunately it came without software restore CD's. I would like to add system 9 to the eMac.
I have all my iMac G3 500 MHz software restore CD's and the OS 9.2.2 install CD. When I try to install system 9 on the eMac, after booting from the CD, I am prompted to "Select a System folder for Classic" and "Macintosh HD" is listed, but the text for "Macintosh HD" is grey and will not open when I try to select it. The desktop has a System 9 icon up in the top bar next to the modem phone icon. When I click it "start classic" comes up and I get a warning message "Classic cannot find Mac OS9 system folder on the startup disk to use". I wonder if I can solve the problem if I do a complete system restore? Can I use my iMac G3 system restore CD's on the eMac G4?

Mdc3, welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you just want to operate in classic mode (not boot into OS 9.2.x), this may work.
Copy the System Folder containing OS 9.2.x from another Mac. Then copy the folder to your eMac. You may now be able to run in classic mode while booted into Tiger.
Since you have 10.4.6 installed, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

  • Install disk that comes with my emac

    Hello,
I have a bunch of emacs and the install cd that came with individual emac is stored in one placed an not labeled.
Is there a way to find out which CD is the right install CD for a particular emac?
    please help.
    thanks,
    sumomo

Be careful if you are trying to restore those rascals. The older install disks can have different video drivers on them. You know that is the case when you get an itty-bitty screen instead of the regular sized one.
This is a wild addition to your question that may have no bearing. but...
If you have a firewire HD, an option for you may be to use a program like Penn State Blast to make an image of an eMAc that you already have and just restore the other one with that image.
Works for me and my 30 emacs

  • Installing OS 9 on a new eMac

I'd like to install OS 9 on a new eMac 1.42 GHz, in order to run classic. The ReadMe that comes with the X install disks refers to a CD upon which the installer can be found. But tuat disk wasn't included with the machine. The name of the disk is: "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disc.
Should it have been included? How do I get a copy? Can a commercial install disk of OS 9 be used? I have commercial install disks available (though not heree just now).
    Thanks in advance ...

    Hi, Roger -
One of these Apple KBase articles may help, as appropriate -
    Article #151871 - Mac OS X 10.3: Installing Classic
Article #301408 - Using Restore discs with computers that ship w/ OSX 10.3.7 or later
Since your machine is not OS 9 bootable, you will not be able to use a stand-alone OS 9 Install CD - the installers on those run only when the machine is booted to OS 9 (usually to the CD).
Unlike OSX, an OS 9 System Folder can be copied via a Finder copy process with no loss of function.
Some users have found that copying the OS 9 System Folder from an OS 9.1 or later OS 9 Install CD will suffice. Note, though, that the System Folder on such a CD has a very limited assortment of control panels and extensions, and many services will not be available when that one is used.
Copying an OS 9 System Folder from another (preferrably OS 9 bootable) machine often works better, since those are usually complete OS's. Be sure such an OS is already at the final OS 9 version you want (for Classic, OS 9.1 or later; OS 8.2.x provides better compatibility as Classic). Since the OS 9 download updaters will not run in OSX or Classic, only when the machine is booted to OS 9, you will not be able to use them on a 1.42GHz eMac.
Once you have the OS 9 System Folder on the machine, restart, then use the Classic pane in OSX's System Preferences to select it. In all likelihood your version of OSX will need to update the Classic-specific files in it before it can be used as Classic.
The best choice, of course, is to use the specific version of Classic that came with your original disks. If you absolutely do not have it installable from your original disks, and feel you are missing a disk, contact Apple's Customer Support to see if you can arrange a replacement -

  • How do I install OS9 system folder on an eMac?

I have a brand new eMac. It has OS 10.4.4 installed. I need to install an OS9 system folder in order to run Classic. I have an OS9 CD, but the eMac can't boot to it or run anything from the cd from OSX. The eMac didnt come with a CD that says anything like additional software or Classic Support. I tried booting to the OSX install CD's and doing a customized install. Classic support or OS9 was not an option.
    Any ideas?

No new Macs can boot in OS 9, which is half the reason Classic was invented to emulate 9 while your Mac is booted in X.
The disk set that came with your eMac does contain installers that will give you a System Folder for use with Classic over X, but not on the main disks…
It's probably on one labelled Additional Software and Mac OS 9 but sorry, these things change from time to time and I haven't seen a recent eMac…

  • Install Panther  on a G4 w/ Tiger to be installed on top of that ?eMac DVDs

FIRST, let me say that I know that I this a long post, thanks for bearing with me. If you would prefer NOT to deal with all of these issues then, please feel free to your option by dealing with only 1, 2 or 3, etc. of the issues.
    Hi,
I have several questions that I would like to get some clarification on.
    A) To start with has anyone dealt with Fastmanc.com and had any kind of problems in regards to ordering older versions of Mac OSs and/or being sent machine specific Install packages that didn't match what you used, e,g, sent eMac install for use on a G4?
I've ordered a full installation package for Panther and with it comes with an updating CD for the updates through 10.3.9.
1)However, they told me that they were the install DVDs for an eMac. They guaranteed(not in writing) me that I would not have problems doing the install even though I have a G4 DP. I ordered these OS install DVDs after questioning them quite closely about this issue. At present I'm running a G4 DP 500(GigabitEthernet) with 512 MB of RAM, 2. ATI Radeon videocards and I have a completely updated version of 10.2.8(security patches et al). Will the fact that I'm using the install package for an eMac bring any problems my way during the installation and afterwards? If so, what kind and how serious a set of problems are likely to occur? I don't understand why having a more powerful and flexible setup wouldn't be able to handle the install from an eMac?
    2) The install DVDs for 10.4 are the update version again for the eMac and a CD with all of the Apple OS updates. The CD contains all of the updates through OS 10.4.11. Should I be aware of any issues during the installation process for Tiger?
    3) My HD(actually, I have 3) the original 40 GB is a Hitachi/IBM Deskstar, which is slaved to a new Seagate 120 GB, and an external Maxtor 1 Touch 300 GB HD, the Maxtor is used for auto backup(Retrospect 6.0.195).
a)I have partitioned the Seagate into 4 segments, 1) Seagate 10.2., 2) Seagate 10.3, 3) Seagate 10.4 and 4) Seagate 9.0 (for all of Apple OS 9 legacy software, 3rd party apps, and all of the work that I produced while using OS 9, etc.) The Hitachi/IBM has three partitions and all are almost completely full.
    4) Installation locations
4a) Now what I'm wondering is, when I install all of Panther, will I be able to install it in the partition designated S.G. 10.3.? IF not, into what partition is it likely to end up?
4b) Being that 10.4(Tiger) is an upgrade version installation will it automatically attach/install itself into the same partition where Panther installed? Or, can I designate it to install into the partition that I labeled as S.G. 10.4? This is where I would prefer to have it install.
4c) If 10.4 does install into the S.G. 10.4 partition will it function seamlessly being that it is separated from 10.3 which it is supposed to install itself over the top of? (I believe that the correct Tech description for this process.)
    5) If there is anything that I haven't thought of, haven't made clear or if you have any caveats or other suggestions, then please feel free to include them.
Thanks for whatever assistance that you may provide.

    Hi,
first thing is to check that you have the updated firmware for you GE installed.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
If you have any OS installed run Apple System profiler and check the versiom, it should be 4.2.8
You need an OS 9 installation to be able to run the firmware update in case the firmware is old.

  • I want to install osx 10.5 server on emac g4 but a single layer dvd is smal

hello i want to install osx 10.5 server edition on my emac g4 for learning purposes but 1 dvd is to small to burn osx 10.5 to so my question what must i do to get osx 10.5 server on my emac g4?

Most Macs with DVD readers can READ Dual-layers, even if they cannot write them. Try the original dual layer release disc, and I expect that you will be pleasantly surprised that it can be read.
If you have 10.5 already installed, there is usually a .mpkg file on the release disc that can add only the Server additional software to a working 10.5.

  • Using FW on an Imac running 10.5 to install 10.4 cds on an eMac

    Okay here's a weird one
I have an eMac with a dead CD drive that I had updated to 10.4 using CD's (not DVD). Now that eMac will not boot up, but will open in Target mode. I also have an iMac running 10.5 that I connected to the eMac so that i could run disk utility and repair the eMacs disk, which I did but it will still not boot up.
Is it possible to use the install CDs I have for 10.4 using the iMac running 10.5 optical drive to reinstall 10.4 on the eMac? Which computer would i put into target mode? Is it even possible to do since I would have change disks during the install (it's 20 cds) Which computer gets restarted using the disk, the iMac or the eMac? Remember the eMac will only open in target mode.
I have read many posts on different forums which has only confused me more, I am afraid of screwing up the iMac, so any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Hi LostInHB, and a warm welcome to the forums!
If the Install discs are for the eMac, you can put them in the iMac, boot the iMac into Target Mode, and use the iMac as a big Firewire Optical Drive, by booting the eMac with the Option/alt key held down & waitinng for the Install Disc in the iMac to show up as a boot choice on the eMac.

  • Problems installing ilife 4.0 disks on emac

    Hello-
I tried looking at previous posts to find a solution to my problem, but couldn't locate anything - so I apologize if this issue has already been addressed.
I never upgraded my iLife apps in my emac, though I have automatically downloaded system upgrades - and now want to upgrade iPhoto, etc. I have two sets of discs for this (I have an Ibook too), and when I try to install, I get a message that one of the ilife apps is running when none are running. So I can't complete the installation.
I appreciate any help - tia
    Mike

    Hello,
I am new to Apple Discussions; I am also having a problem with my iLife installation. I just bought iLife '06, but when I go to install it on my G4, I get the initial iLife window ok, but with only a plain blue folder showing up in it instead of the installer icon. There are no other installer icons inside the folder(s) either, just more blue folders. I can't even start the installation because of this. I have all the stated system requirements as listed, even more, so why isn't this working? I have 10.3.9, 512 mb ram, Quicktime 7.1.3, DVD drive, lots of GB disk space, etc.
I have a newer version of iTunes already installed, could this affect it? I tried quitting the iTunes helper, fixing permissions, removing receipts, making a new disk image, etc., all suggestions that I heard or came across, and nothing has worked. I even talked to an Apple tech guy for about half an hour with no luck. I've never had a problem with other installations or playing other DVDs before either. Do I need to upgrade to Tiger, which I want to anyway?
I couldn't start a new topic, as for some reason, there is no 'post new topic' link appearing for me either at the top of the Apple Discussions pages, even though I log in ok - ? Another bug? I'm using Safari, of course.
    Thanks,
    Paul

  • Install Classic Mac Environment on an eMac with retail CDs

Forgive me for creating a new post, I'm sure this has been asked before, I'm just not able to find anything helpful .
I have an eMac (the 1GHz USB 2.0 educational model) and retail copies of OS 10.3 and 9.1.  OS 10.3 is installed, and I would like to install the Classic Mac Environment using my retail copy of OS9, but I can't figure out how to get it to work.  The machine won't boot from the OS9 cd, and when I run the installer in Panther, it stops with a message that I need to update OS9, but cannot unless the drive is writable (which it isn't, because it's a cd).  Is there a way to get OS9 onto my HDD so that I can actually update it, or do I need to buy another copy of OS9 to get this to work?
    Thanks for any help!

If the eMac is running Mac OS X 10.3 currently, you can try this method, summarized here
    https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/macos9/nR2QQCKaCFA
This will give you a complete Mac OS 9.2.2 System Folder that you can use for Classic, with no need for an installation CD or updates.

  • Cant install Mac os X on eMac

I want to get rid of my eMac.
I erased the eMac from my Intel Macbook (Using firewire target mode).
I have been trying to install clean Mac os x on eMac, but wont let me. I just get the flashing question mark symbol.
What state should eMac be in? Journaled, non-journaled etc.
    Any ideas?

Do I need the exact dvds that came with the eMac?
You need those or a retail Mac OS X version which is newer than the eMac. Disks designed for a different Mac model won't work.
Whatever you're using, don't perform the installation through FireWire Target Disk mode. If the eMac has no optical drive or if it isn't capable of using that type of disk, put the other computer in FireWire Target Disk mode with the disk in the drive.

  • How do I make my Emac wireless?

Is there a way to install a wireless card in a Emac?

If you have an older eMac, it would need the original airport card; these are rather scarce and are hence rather expensive. They are also 802.11B only which might limit your ability to connect to a wireless network and will limit your speed.
Another alternative (this is how I do it on my 700MHz eMac) is an ethernet wireless bridge adapter. These connect to your ethernet port and make it wireless. They require no drivers and are therefore platform and OS independent, although they are a little bit more difficult to set up. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $75 for one. I use a DLink DWL-G820.

  • Problem with Printer Utility Setup when installing Epson printer

    Hi everyone,
Hope some kind soul here can help me out on this.
I bought a Epson Stylus CX7300 All-in-one printer yesterday and am having difficulty installing the printer driver onto my eMac running on OSX 10.3.9.
I followed the procedure on the Epson installation disc and even called up their customer support office and went through step-by-step guides to troublesome the cause. Even downloaded the latest driver from the Epson site, and installed it, but every time I open up a document and tries to print, the following would occur:
    1. When I click "PRINT", a pop-up will appear, and under the printer field, it will be indicated as "NO PRINTER SELECTED"
    2. I would then select "EDIT PRINTER LIST" from the printer field - after which another pop-up will appear saying "You have no printers available. Would you like to add your list of printers now?"
    3. When I click "ADD", an error pop-up will appear saying "The application Printer Setup Utility has unexpectedly quit. The system and other applications have not been affected. Would you like to submit a bug report to Apple?"
I have submitted tonnes of "bug reports" to Apple since yesterday but nothing happened.
I also tried to open Printer Utility Setup directly from under System/Applications/Utilities, but the same error will appear and it will just quit "unexpectedly".
Is there any remedy to this?
Oh, the strange thing is, the CX7300 can scan images fine, and I also managed to do a test print from Epson's utility.
    Thank you.
    Yours Sincerely,
    Alvinology

Hi, I was just about to post the same question myself. I'm trying to sort out a friends iMac G5 with a Canon Pixma(?) printer. In this case the printer used to work OK, but after moving house and setting it up again, Print Utility crashes every time when trying to add the printer.
    Thanks

  • Finder not starting in OS X 10.4.9 on eMac

last week, installed 10.4.9 update on eMac and had lots of problems. The only thing left that is not working is that after login the Apple toolbar at top, only the clock comes up. (rest doesn't show)Nothing shows on desktop, no HD icon, shortcuts. I've tried running DiskWarrior on eMac, but still same. I can get the Apple toobar to come up if start iphoto, but can't click on the Apple menu itself. If try to browse to open file within programs, it crashes and closes program. The eMac is on a network that logins to Mac OS X server. Any Suggestions would be appreciated. Have been trying to research and solve this problem for 1 week, trying to avoid having to re-install the OS.

    frechdude,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
What OS X version did you update from? Did you get 10.4.9 via Software Update or by downloading and running the full OS X Update Combo 10.4.9 (PPC)? (It's worth trying the stand-alone Combo updater again in either case.)
When the OS was updated, was the Mac allowed to fully complete the optimizing and restart on it's own? At least some 10.4.x updates have involved double starts (the computer restarts, the grey screen/white Apple logo comes up, the startup runs a little while, then restarts again), and the 10.4.x updates have generally taken a long time (five minyes or more) for the first restart after updating (with subsequent starts being faaster than before). If anything interrupts the restarting after updating, that can damage the Finder in particular. If that's the case, an Archive and Install really is the most practical fix.
Do you have any third-party menubar add-ons installed? Incompatible menu add-ons (haxies) are a known source of problems especially after an OS or security update. Start Up in Safe Mode and disable or update to 10.4.9-compatible versions any add-ons. Note: it can take upwards of 20 minutes for Safe Mode to complete startup once the grey screen / white Apple logo appears and you release the shift key, as a faceless version of Repair Disk runs in the background.
How much free space on the hard drive?

  • What to do with an old eMac?

OK, odd question I know, but a worthwhile one in the interest of re-cycling and all that.
I am about to come into ownership of a eMac: 700mhz, half a gig ram, 40gb HDD, etc. Pretty much standard. At work I have a network with 1 wireless mini, a wireless MB and a wired Mini on it, all the machines on the network share a printer that is connected to the wired mini. I have a big external firewire HDD that I manually connect to the MB for backups etc. The two Mini's both have external USB hdds for backups, in both cases the external HDDs are only slightly bigger than the Mini's own internal hdd. Everything shares out the internet from the router.
Think that's pretty much everything covered.
So, as I say, I'm getting the Emac (swopping it for some stuff), my question is, what on earth can I use it for? I'm thinking along the lines of setting up some sort of fils server, or maybe hooking the big external HDD upto it and having everything back up to it over the network. Or maybe hooking the printer up to it, or something else.
What would you do with it?

You could turn it into a external HD for another mac. I am not sure how much power this would use. Or use it as a external VNC monitor. Put the software Screen Recycler on the host mac http://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html Click on downloads. NOTE : THIS IS SHAREWARE!!! IT ONLY WORKS IN 30 MIN. PERIODS without registering. Install a VNC program on the eMac. Try Jolly Fast VNC: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/33113. Make sure both computers are connected somehow. Launch Screen Recycler on the other mac. Launch Jolly Fast VNC on the eMac. On Screen Recycler, dismiss any message about shareware unless you want to but it. Make sure screen recycler service is on. Hide this application. Do not close it! In Jolly Fast... on the eMac, click Screen Recycler, then click start. One of the menu bars may have display full screen. On the host mac you may have it as extended desktop or mirror mode. Voila! That's it! DON'T USE IT AS A FILE SERVER. With my experience, my froze all the time as a backup server.

  • Can't Print PDF/Folders Need Password To Opem After Archive and Install

    Greetings:
I did a archive and install on my 10.4.11 eMac because of ever sluggish performance and Safari 3.1.1 and QuickTime 1.4 problems (gotta be a better way than all that!). First, maybe by my shakey hand or because of bills, I somehow did the archive and install twice in succession, ending up with 2 previous system folders. (The second one doesn't contain any personal goodies). But I've lost my prefs and happily I regularly Sync Firefox/Thunderbird separately so they weren't lost in the grand sweep-up. I dumped the library folder in the 1st Previous System folder into the "new" System folder's (blank) library one and retrieved most of my functionality. What I can't do now is Print PDFs and annoyingly, most every other system folder wants my permissions password before I can use it. This sneaky lock-out kept NeoOffice from booting for hours despite reinstalling it several times before I realized the NeoOffice folder in the library folder was locked. Unfortunately, Safari seems to choke when you type a password or characters into some input windows, like some kind of auto-fill was trying beat you and gets hung.
How can I kill all these pesky permissions off and how do I recover Print PDF?
    Thanks.
    James Greenidge
