Install OS 9.2 on G4 MDD running Tiger

For some reason, though I have OS 9 seemingly installed and visible as a selection in my Start Up Disk, when clicking on it, it fails to start up, and I have to go through the trouble of restarting with the OS X install disc.
So what I'd like to do is to reinstall OS 9 - though I don't know how, exactly.  Any step by step instructions would be greatly appreciated.
I have the OS 9 disc, and the OS 9.1 (or .2?) update disc, but I'm not sure how to go about it.  Is this a 'clean install' where one is able to reinstall both OS X and 9 without erasing data on the Hard Disk?  I hope I don't have to go through the Carbon Cloner or SuperDuper thing - whatever it is, because I found in the past they didn't do what they were supposed to, or I didn't do it right.  I can, however, back up whatever data is necessary (System files) to an external drive.
I need OS 9 dual boot, because my video NLE application is OS 9 only, and my other MDD G4 has developed hardware problems, so I need to switch my projects to the above mentioned G4/MDD computer that doesn't boot to OS 9 at present. It also has a quieter powersupply, which is favorable.  (Can I just reinstall the OS 9 without affecting anything else?)  I have commitments to finish these projects, and try as I might, I am  not at all comfortable or pleased with working with Final Cut Express.  My very versatile OS 9 program, Cinestream, is what I'm proficient with.
Note:  I have the retail OS 9 white install disc and I also have the model-specific (grey) OS 9 disc, # 3 of 4, Mac OS version 9.2.2, that comes with the MDD set.  Which is preferable?  I think I had trouble with one of them - the grey one, since it may be scratched and doesn't complete the install process - to my recollection.
Many thanks for assistance!

Look at the back of your machine:
If there is a Firewire 800 port, it can't boot into Mac OS 9.
If there is no Firewire 800 port, look at your System Profiler to see if Mac OS 9 drivers are installed.
If not, see if they are available on Disk Utility.   If no Mac OS 9 drivers are installed, you can't boot into Mac OS 9.
Unfortunately to install the drivers you must first boot off an installer disc and erase the hard drive, and install the drivers at the time of install.
Then you install the Mac OS X operating system.
Then you restore the Mac OS 9 operating system.
I know it is a bad chicken and egg scenario, but that's how it works.  At least you can have more than one internal hard drive.
And Mac OS X on PowerPCs does not support booting from USB either.

im trying to instal snow leopard on my macbook. its running tiger 10.4.11 and it meets all the requirements  but it ask me for a restart to begin instalation progres, i restar it and it doesn't happen anything. anyone can help me?

I assume the restart was prompted during the installation process?
First of all, that restart will take several minutes while files are moved into place and should not be interrupted.
If it fails, or you have interrupted the process, you'll need to boot from the installer (hold down the C key on startup) and use Disk Utility to erase the drive prior to continuing the installation.
That will wipe all data on the drive, though, so if you didn't make a backup before beginning the upgrade, you'll need to get your data off safely before proceeding. That may likely require the use of another Mac to access yours in Target Disc Mode.

  • Can I Install iLife '08 onto a PB G4 running Tiger?

In our family, we just bought a new MacBook, which came with the 2 gray MacBook Mac OS X Install Discs (Leopard). Once the OS is loaded on a new MacBook, it of course, includes the new iLife '08.
I have an older PowerBook G4 running Tiger (10.4.11) and would love to be able to use the new iPhoto '08, as the version I have installed on my computer is iLife '04.
Is it possible to install only the iLife '08 applications, or even only 1 or two of them, from the MacBook OS X install discs onto my PowerBook G4 running Tiger? I do not want to install Leopard or a whole new OS, only the iLife applications.
If this is possible, where do I find just those specific applications and how do I install them?
And, would the install process simply write over the iLife '04 applications already on my hard drive or do some preliminary step have to be taken first?
I am grateful for any answers or suggestions on what's possible here.

iLife '08 will work on your PB provided you have 10.4.9 or later installed and your processor is at least 733 MHz. iMovie requires a G5 processor or better so it will not work on your PB. You also need a minimum of 512 MBs of RAM.
However, it is illegal to install the software on more than one CPU at a time. You need to purchase an additional copy of iLife '08 to install it on your PB or remove it from the other computer.

  • Installing 9.2.2. on PowerBook G3 running Tiger

Hi!a couple of months ago i bought a used PB G3(firewire).
It already had Tiger installed, and didn't have any retail cd's or bundled software.
i've copied a 9.2.2 install cd from my friend, but it doesnt boot from cd.i hold down the "C" key-no way.Option-C - the same crap.
after i copied the "System folder" from the cd to my harddisk and tried to start Classic, it loads and then i see the following message:
"The system software on the startup disk only fuctions on original media, not if copied to another drive".
as i understand, mine cd is corrupted because of coping protection system.
any ideas how to fix it?
    p.s.sorry for grammar\spelling errors if any.=)
    PowerBook G3   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi, Chainer -
It is very difficult to duplicate an OS 9 Install CD and have it be bootable and hence usable for its intended purpose. In addition, if the source CD is not a retail CD (white label, gold 9), then it is model specific and is not suitable for use in installing OS 9 on a model different than the one it originally shipped with.
Also, the System Folder on an OS 9 Install CD can not be copied to a hard drive and be bootable. That has nothing to do with copy-protection - it has to do with the System Folder on an OS 9 Install CD having been highly modified. One reason for that, on retail OS 9 Install CDs, is so that the CD can boot a multitude of different models.
If there is no existing OS 9 on your PB G3 at the moment, then you will need to acquire a retail OS 9 Install CD in some version, boot to that CD and install that version, then update it via download updates as needed.
If your PB is a G3 model, and not a G3 Series model, it can not install nor use OS 9.2.1 or OS 9.2.2 without some help from a utility such as can be found here -
    OS9Forever.com Home Page
Note that the utility requires the use of the OS 9.2.x download updates; an OS 9.2.1 or 9.2.2 Install CD can not be used with it.
This Apple KBase article lists Mac models and the versions of OS 8 and 9 each can use; note (3) on that page, if applicable to a model, is important -
Article #25114 - Mac OS 8, 9: Compatibility With Macs
All PB G3 models can use a retail OS 9.1 Install CD - so, if you're not sure which model you have, you should look for one of those.
You can often get retail OS 9 Install CD's in versions 9.0 through 9.2.1 at sites like these -
    http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/index.html - Apple Reseller
    http://www.applerescue.com/
    EBay is another possibility.
Regardless of the source, be sure to get a retail OS 9 Install CD - those are white, with a large gold 9 on them; the retail OS 9 Install CD's have a universal installer; model-specific Install CD's do not.

Hello to all my readers.I am still using my Apple G4 1.25 Ghz MDD running Leopard 10.5.8 with iTunes 10.6.3 installed. Can I use an Phone 4s with iOS 5 with this set up? I have read the iPhone iOS 5 user guide and it appears that I can but is anybody actually doing it ? My current phone is a £10 Nokia and I've neither wish nor cash to spend more than a grand upgrading to an intel based machine (at the moment) ! Regards to you all.

If you can find an iPhone running iOS5 and those are the specs for iOS5, there is no reason it should not work.
If you want a more current version of iOS or a more current device, a Windows computer is always an option at significantly less cost.
Granted, there is no requirement to have a computer to use an iPhone.

  • CHUD on a dual processor MDD running Leopard (10.5.8)

I finally got around to installing CHUD today and am wondering if some of you folks who have used it for a while might have some easy answers to a few questions.
I first tried version 3.5.2. It installed, but I couldn't adjust any of the settings. I then read on japamac's site that some MDD's could use 4.4.4. I installed that version and it does work (In fact, I'm posting this with one processor tied behind my back). However, there does not seem to be an option for nap mode.
Also, after I toggle between single an dual processor mode a few times, performance in dual mode seems to take a big hit. A restart solves the problem, but I'm wondering if this is normal.
Is there any way to get nap mode to work in a dual cpu MDD running 10.5.8?
Is there any way to get it to stay in single CPU mode when it wakes from sleep?
I read through the discussions at xlr8yourmac before posting this. It appears that some people have been able to get nap mode to work under Leopard, but they are not always careful to mention exactly which version of Leopard and CHUD they are using.

    Hi-
When installing CHUD, it is also necessary to run CHUD remover to deinstall previous installations.
If not deinstalled, odd stuff happens.
3.5.2 is the one for dual processors.
Other versions have mixed dual processor support.
This is one of the claims that 4.4.4 works, but I have lingering doubts
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5974655&#5974655
I may need to edit my blog page.....
It takes a script for automatic Nap enabling in a dual processor machine with 3.5.2.

I am having a issue installing Adobe Acrobat XI.  I am running Windows 8.1. When  go to install it gets an error.  The error is with transform in registry and will not install product. I am looking at how I can fix this registry problem.
I have tried to uninstall all Abode Acrobat installations but one file remains and refuses to be uninstalled. It gives me this error : Error applying Transforms . Verify that specified paths are valid. It was installed on Sept 18 2014.  I have downloaded a Transform update but it tells I do not have a Adobe Acrobat product installed.

    Hi all,
Sylonious, did you manage to sort this problem out? I have been experiencing similar problems. I think my problem was because I had many different versions of JDKs. I have done a complete re-install. I would be really grateful to you (and anyone else) for help with this problem.
I have re-installed JSDK1.4.2_03, set the "path" variable to "C:\JSDK1.4.2_03".
When I compile using "javac" I get an error saying "javac" is not recognised.
When I compile using "C:\j2sdk1.4.2_03\bin\javac Freq.java" no error is thrown.
Every time I try to run a java file, I always get the NoClassDefFound error. When run with the -verbose option, files are loaded from C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin - is this correct?
I have removed all previous references to java in the registry editor.
    Please help !
    Regards,
    Vipul

I performed a software update and the system is installing an update but it has been running for over 24hrs and keeps saying "This may take a few minutes, don't shut down your computer" Can anyone help?

Hello cor-el, thanks for your reply. I changed my settings for downloads to desktop and it has appeared on there. When I double click I am asked which program I want to open file. I click firefox and another box "opening install" says I have chosen to open the file which is an application and do I want to save it. This is the only real option so I press save file. I get a box saying this is an executable file which may contain viruses - do you want to run. I press ok and the final box showing C drive file name and desktop appears stating application not found.
This happens the same whenever I try to install.
To my untrained eye the application is not being recognised as an application and I cannot work out how to get it to do that.
My plugin is still showing as out of date.
Is there anything you could suggest. Thanks for your time.

I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:

If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

  • Why WINDOWS 8.1 won't install/load on PC where WIN 8 runs Fine ?

Why WINDOWS 8.1 won't install/load on PC where WIN 8 runs Fine ?
As far as System Requirements go, they are the same for WIN 8 and WIN 8.1
    Sympton:
Windows 8.1 Installation DVD loads for some time, no circle of dots, then PC reboots
with quick flash of six lines or so of white text (on black backgound) @ 106 seconds
Needed to use Smart Phone video camera to capture
    Your PC needs to restart.
Please hold down the power button ...
    Error Code:0x000000C4
    Parameters:
    0x000...91
    0x000... F

    0x00000000000000000
    0x00000000000000001
Presumably message is intended for frozen PC, hence 'hold down power button'
In this case it flashes and re-boots
Windows 8.1 Image loads quickly, flash and reboots PC, having corrupted boot entry
(thankfully not other entries in Boot Manager situated on Dell System Reserved Partition)
    PC Desktops affected:
    Dimension 5000 - shipped JAN'05
    RAM 4GB
    Intel Pentium 4 640 3.20Ghz 64bit NX enabled
    ATI Radeon HD 6450
    Dimension 5150c/XPS 200 -shipped MAR'05
    RAM 3GB
    Intel Pentium D 820 2.80Ghz 64bit NX enabled
    Intel 82945G WDDM 1.0
Both the above PC's Install and run Windows 8 without a hiccup
    Another 'ancient' machine, but unaffected:
    Precision 490 Desktop - shipped OCT'07
    RAM 4GB
    2 x XEON 5365 3.0Ghz
ATI HD 6450 (Now HD 7750)
All 8.0 & 8.1 clean Installs and Upgrades on this platform had no problems
Hope some of you can throw some light on this. What does WIN 8.1 do in the boot
process that WIN 8 does not?
And if anybody has encounterd this before...
Note to multi booters - keep or reinstall Dell or other System Reserved partition (PRI,Active)
EasyBCD/Windows Boot Manager held on this partition (eg. 350MB)
If it gets corrupted, you can Restore it, rather than Gigabytes of 1st Primary O/S
Also, it will solve a lot of problems, when manipulating/adding/backing up/restoring O/S's
    That's it, happy computing...

Fellow user from St. Louis, Missouri pointed in the right direction. I'm grateful
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Running upgrade assistant (going to Store rejects CPU, but no details)
    Results in:
    X You can't install Windows 8.1 because your processor doesn't support LAHF/SAHF.
X You can't install Windows 8.1 because your processor doesn't support PrefetchW.
There are at least three Processor requirements that M'soft does not list for WIN 8.1
and it's fairly well documented, if you ask the right question, eg.:
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/2058683/new-windows-8-1-requirements-strand-some-users-on-windows-8.html
So that's it, exclusion by 'stealth' - at least M'soft told you that processor required NX - Execute Disable Bit
    for Windows 8
For Intel units, look out for 'VT-x. Have a processor on the way, but will Motherboard pass CMPXCHG16b test?
    AND PrefetchW AND LAHF/SAHF
Windows 8 support ends 2015, that means people who bought it will have had 2 years use
WIN 8.1 Upgrade/Update (sic) is free, but costly if it won't run on your machine
So, those many people who decried Windows 8 and stuck to WIN 7, were right after all
Early supporters of WIN 8, have been 'betrayed'
'Minimum Requirement for Processor 1Ghz - don't make me laugh! (Presumably for Phone 8)
M'soft have a 'more info' link on System Requirements page, so why not spell it out...
Otherwise it looks like a PR/Cosmetic exersize

You can copy the contents of your regular Firefox profile into your Firefox Portable profile folder. This way you'll have all your regular data like bookmarks, saved passwords, cookies, and so on.

If so, that simply shouldn't happen, and I can't imagine why it does. I suggest you continue the conversation that you started over on the Firefox Portable support forum:

    Hi Donald,
No it doesn't erase anything by default, it does what we used to call an  Archive and Install feature, which can give you a new OS, yet preserve your files and settings if you have enough room on your HD...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
But it does it automatically unless you specifically erase the Disk, but will replace Tiger completely for the OS & several Apple Apps like Safari, Mail, etc, yet preserve your old settings for those!
If you think you may need Tiger to run any APPs that do not work in SL/10.6, then clone or backup first.
I would recomend 2 things before installing though...
Make sure you have enough RAM & HD space.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the new Mac OS X SL/10.6 Install Disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

    Thank you Thomas
First, for changing my question to the right forum. I am new on this and wasn't aware I was in the wrong forum.
Secondly, even though my initial question is not answered as in: I just want to remove Classic, what you say is right. I think now, after writing my long question and seeing your answers, that I should start from scratch.
To answer your question, I bought the new drive to be able to store and back up into DVDs and CDs all the photographs and movies that are still in the computer. I also need to make CDs of my portfolio since I am trying to find a new job and buying a new Mac at this point is out of the question. To upgrade the computer: I just do not have use for OS 9 anymore; I cannot upgrade to the latest Java, Safari or have issues with Flash or other programs; the programs that I have and need will still run perfectly fine or better in Leopard. And even if I could buy another computer I would still like to hang onto this computer for a while.
