Install OS from scratch on an old 20" iMac?

Hi,
I inherited an old 20" iMac (the white plasic model). The hard drive has been completely wiped out (it was done as a security measure by the company getting rid of it), and I didn't get any CDs with it.
I know the machine is an Intel Core Duo 2.0 Ghz.
What do I need to get this machine running again? I have Leopard CDs from a much newer aluminum iMac, as well as Snow Leopard upgrade discs, but I don't think either of those will enable me to install the OS from scratch on a completely blank machine.
Thanks.

Use the Snow Leopard upgrade disks. They will work.
Regards,
Captfred
To install on a machine with no OS, hold the C key down when booting. This will boot from the SL disc (it's a slow process).

How to migrate Mail & Contacts from backup disk of old PPC iMac (10.3.9) to new iMac (10.8.1)?
The Firewire disk is connected and have been able to copy across document folders etc, but Migration Assistant doesn't find the disk so that method no good. Any help appreciated.

Thanks, that looks very comprehensive. Wish I'd seen it before completing Set-Up Assistant initially! Will follow his instructions and report back.

• Installing Leopard from scratch, then installing old apps

Hi,
I want to reinstall Leopard, so none of my documents etc are on the computer, as if I bought it from new. But then I want to reinstall my apps like Aperture, Office, iWork etc. How do I do this, if I want to use the same purchase code as previously (don't want to buy the software again)?
Are the purchase codes related to my laptop itself, and therefore I can use this again after reinstalling Leopard?
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
Mc

As long as you have the installation serial numbers and the original disks, you should have no problems installing them on your reinstall of Leopard.
If iLife came with your computer, then you will have to install that from the original disks that came with your computer using the "Bundled Software" install....

• Installing Mavericks from Scratch

I have just recently changed jobs and want to wipe my 2009 MacBook Pro 17' clean and install a Solid State Drive.
I don't have any of the old OS Install DVDs and would like to install Mavericks or Yosemite from Scratch.
How do I buy/obtain a copy of this that I can install on the new Solid State Drive?

You would have to install Snow Leopard (10.6) first. You can get SL for $20 from the Apple Store here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard..
Then Mavericks (or Yosemite, which is supposed to come out in a few days) would be a free download from the App Store.

• How to install mavericks from scratch

Hi
I have just upgraded my imac with an OWC Mercury 120 Gb SSD and increased ram up to 12 Gb.
The upgrade was made by a service where I sent the mac with OSX Maverics and a few apps previously installed. Everything runs fine (no more tha 3 secs to start PS Elements) and I started to reinstall apps from my time machine hd, but later noticed that the Applications folder exists both in the SSD and Macintosh HD wich makes me think that osx resides in Macintosh HD. Now, as my iMac is middle 201, it seems I have to start the install from DVD Snow Leopard and not Maverics directly. Before the upgrade I tried as an exercise to install Maverics from an USB stick as suggested in a forum, but when the progress timer said 1 second left, no further progress and had to reinstall SL, then Lion and later Mavericks, quite a long procedure if there is not a shorter way.
Thanks

• Does re-installing OSX from scratch make XP unbootable?

I'm considering upgrading to Leopard, and in doing so would like to wipe my Tiger installation and start from scratch. Will doing so wipe some boot sector stuff so that my Bootcamp XP partition will be unbootable? I hardly use OSX and use Windows 99% of the time, so preserving my existing XP installation is far more important than upgrading OSX.
Any advice appreciated.

Hi minimoog,
the 'boot'-informations are saved in the 200MB-EFI-partitions on the harddisk, which usually are invisible.
If you only erase the Tiger partition and in no way alter the partitions or repartition your HD, the the Windows partition will stay intact and bootable.
Personally I would suggest making a backup of your Windows partition before the Leopard installation, just in case.

• Installing GarageBand from scratch

Sorry to be so basic, but I'm sure GarageBand was installed when I first set up this PC about 2 years ago, but after a couple of crashes and surgery no longer! I downloaded V2 and tried to install, but told that "An eligible GarageBand application was not found in /Applications", then I tried to install what I thought was 1.1, but it was an update too, so where do I get the base download from?
Alan

Forgive me. No offense intended.
Since you were not familiar with iLife '05, I assumed you were new to the platform.
GarageBand 2 is a commercial product. It is provided free with new computer purchases but if GarageBand 2 did not ship with your computer, you need to purchase it as part of the iLife '05 package for US$80.
iLife is sold separately from Mac OS X. So if you buy a Tiger install DVD, you don't get iLife in the price. It's extra.
Any subsequent version of iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and GarageBand will also be bundled free with new Macs at the appropriate time, and must also be purchased separately for owners of older Macs, if Apple sticks to its current plan.
I think they are going to rev these products about every eighteen months, so if you want to keep GarageBand up to date in the coming years, you'll need to plan on the expense.

• Do I need to install XP from Scratch, with Boot Camp

Dear All
My PC decided to pack in which runs Win XP, I also have a Mac but need to use Windows for various other apps, I am considering upgrading to Leopard and noticed Boot Camp for dual boot.
My question really is, would I be able to remove the Disk Drive from the PC and connect it into the Mac and it run OK, or do I need to re-install Windows XP from the start?
Help would be appreciated.
Many thanks

As you have a PowerMac G5, you (as already stated) can NOT use Boot Camp.

In "theory" you could use Virtual PC, but this will not allow you to do what you want to do.

• I can't personalize Firefox. Is it possible to "CLEAN" reinstall from scratch without saving old profile?

Other than the Firefox Logo and a few other items, my screen is completely white (except for black text). I've tried everything to change the theme/persona, etc. but with no luck. My profile folder shows no bookmarks any earlier than 1/2/2012. And when I RUN: firefox.exe -p from the start menu, it tells me that it can't be found.
I'm thinking that it might be best to just uninstall the who;e thing and start with a "fresh" install including a new profile. Is this possible? And more importantly, a good idea?
Thank you-
Tim

Hi Damien,
I'm sorry that you've been having trouble syncing fonts to your computer. If you would like to email us at [email protected], we see what the problem is. Please include your Creative Cloud log files; I'll put the directions at the end of this post.
If you would prefer to purchase the font and install the files locally, most foundries sell a desktop license that allows you to do so.
I hope that this helps; let me know if you have any other questions. Best,

On OS X:
* Open the Finder
* under the Go menu, select "Go To Folder"
* in the window that opens, type: /Users/(username)/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CoreSync/
Remember to replace "(username)" with your own account name.
(Or if you are comfortable working from the Terminal, cd to $HOME/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CoreSync/)

• Install SL from scratch or upgrade over 10.5.6 ?

I'm certain this has been addressed but I can't put my finger on it just right now..
I installed SL onto a fresh SSD drive and it works just fine (have not tried TM yet). I notice this must be an upgrade to Leopard as there are few of myh previous applications that came with Leopard. I suspect this is because I did a fresh install without the previous version of Leopard present. That's fine I guess but now how do I go about getting these appson this SSD SL disc without doing a 10.5.X install and SL install ?
Thanks all

Thanks balto and WL..well since it's already installed and taylored with my personal tweaks I'm gonna leave it. I've just added ilife09 (had a stand alone) and FCE4. This gives me the the option to taylor the apps on this Intel SSD and keep to the basic/must.
My question which you answered thank-you kindly was to confirm SL did not indeed include such apps. I suspect I can move things around with the "migration assistant",,don't you just luv these Macs..:)

• My iPad constantly requires rebooting since latest software update.I have done clean install started from scratch and it still continues

My iPad 2 has given me many months of hassle free usage. I have recently [earlyApril] updated the software. Now every time I go to use it I am forced to hold bottom and top button to boot IPad .Eventually it kicks in and as long as I'm using it its fine. If I leave alone it goes down and requires rebooting.
Have tried total factory reset and it continues to malfunction. apple have informed me that a hardware repair would be £206 for a fix or replacement.I find this unacceptable considering the iPad has been well cared for & never dropped etc .Any help greatly appreciated.

So, I have managed to get my iPad to stop showing the "connect to iTunes" screen. I did this by plugging it in to my husband's PC and trying to restore from the backup I left there many many months ago.
The restore FAILED error 3194 (I looked it up it's the same error as the one I got on my macintosh "device is isn't eligible for the requested rebuild"
But the restore attempt mad the "connect to iTunes" screen go away, now it has 4.3.1 again with the special multitouch update.
BUT I STILL CAN'T RESTORE! Why not? I've been searching all over the web and I can find nothing that helps.
It's not like I jailbroke it... can anyone help me please?

I currently have a MacBook Pro with iLife '08. I'm planning on purchasing a Mac Mini to use as a media center and would like to swap the iLife '09 on the Mini with the iLife '08 on my MacBook Pro. Is this possible, and if so, how?

No - the software that comes with your computer is set up only for that system

• Cant install spore from USB backup disk on new IMACS that have no DVD drive.

I am trying to test Spore on my father's new Imac but it will not let me install.
I copied the whole DVD content on a portable USB drive and I can install it fine from there via my own MAC but from my father's new IMAC 2012 that has no DVD drive I am greeted by the error.
"could not verify the integrity of the installer"
any ideas why?

Actually I resolved the issue. My system is 10.7 not Mountain Lion.
I resolved the issue by moving all the content to the root of the portable drive: they were in a subfolder called SPORE which caused the installation to be unrecognizable.
Thanks for helping !
