Install OS X 10.4 onto my laptop from DVD that came with iMac G5?

Hi!
I just got an iMac G5, and want to install OSX 10.4 onto my laptop (G4 800 Mhz iBook) but can't seem to do so. Is there some way to do this, for example if I were to boot the iBook in target disk mode, or is the DVD that comes with the Imac locked in some way to prevent installation on other computers? Is this some kind of "one computer only" license? I don't recall this issue with OS X in the past!
Thanks.

Hi mrp,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
You CANNOT use hardware specific software install&restore disks that shipped with another computer. These simply do not contain the hardware drivers for any other computer model but the one they originally shipped with. You have to buy the retail full install DVD.
Besides this technical limitation it would also be ILLEGAL. Apple's Mac OS X Software License Agreement states in point 2:
2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
A. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time,...

  • Install Snow Leopard from CD that came with MacBook Pro to different Mac

I need to re-install Snow Leopard on an older MacBook of mine I want to clean out for my wife.
The problem is the Snow Leopard CD (family pack) I purchased months ago is scratched, damaged I believe by an iMac at my business. I want to see if it is possible to install 10.6 from the CD's I recently got with my new MacBook pro. I tried to use them in the MacBook (Intel) I'm trying to hand off to my wife but after I selected the language option I got an error message stating I couldn't install that disc on the computer. It already runs 10.6 so I know it's not an OS issue. Is my MacBook detecting that the installation CD is not the same one that came with it?
Sorry for the wordy post and thanks in advance for any help.

From what i can tell, the media contains only the necessary files to install to that model-specific hardware.
This is both for licensing & technical reasons. Licensing because that disc is licensed for use only with that specific Mac (not model, literally just that Mac) & technical because pre- & post-install scripts & other installer features on grey system discs are designed just for that model.
Curious. I know i've used system restore discs from one machine on another due to the fact that we used to - for reasons unknown to me - allow users to keep their restore discs, at which point they subsequently lost them.
Perhaps it's just older models that allowed it?
No matter. Thanks for the clarification.

Make sure your computer is running smoothly on Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8
    Create a Backup Before Upgrading...
Then check your Mac is compatible with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.x
    Upgrade to Mountain Lion
With Regard to ML...  Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using...
Power PC Applications are Not Supported...

You should also consider more RAM... Get the Maximum you can for your Mac...

  • Hello, I am selling my macbook silver 2.4gHz, and would like to re install and wipe the hard drive. however, i insert the snow leopard dvd( that came with my new 15" 2.3gHz), follow the support steps but after one screen, it says it cant instal - restart?

What can i do.., btw im a bit of a newby for this stuff!

The grey installation DVDs supplied with Macs are specific to the computer they are supplied with. They cannot be used to install on any other Mac.
Either erase and install the OS on the old MB from it's own grey DVDs, or go and buy the retail Snow Leopard installation DVD ($29 in the US, £26 UK).

  • I am installing a Bluetooth card in my PowerPC G5.  The screws that came with it are too small.  Is it neecessary to screw the card in place? Is there some type of electrical/ground connection made?  Thanks Jack

Do I need to Screw the Bluetooth Card in place in my G5?  Is there some/electrical/ground connection made with the screws?
    Thanks, Jack

Depending on the exact build model (identified) the parts can vary, so without knowing
what PPC G5 (assuming tower in this discussion) you have, the screws should fit if the
part is correct. And the item should be attached so it won't move or short against the
    other electrical components.
In the original configuration, BT & AirPort cards were dealer installed or CTO accessories.
And the metal case could affect the range of either of these wireless cards; in several
instances there also was an antenna upgrade as part of the kit.
Which G5 tower do you have?
If not an aluminum tower, that'd be a another ASC discussion.
Could be you acquired the part for a different sales model number or build variable.
Can the seller match your product serial number with the bluetooth part?
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I can't install the OS X that came with my MBP !

    Hello,
I'm a new MacBook Pro user who has spent most of his life dealing with Windows OSs...And the thing is that I wanted to fully recover my MBP (Erase and Reinstall its OS) using the Mac OS installation DVD that came with it...
The thing is when I followed the simple steps you have mentioned in order to install a fresh copy of the OS media I got, it all goes well (i.e I held the ALT button until the Mac OS disk showed up and chose it, proceeding to language selection,) and when I get to the following step ( where the insatallation begins ) I get this error massege that says : " You can not install Mac OS X on this HD " !  Although I managed to Erase the HD completely ! What do I do to make it install ?!
Your help is invaluably appreciated, please repond to me ASAP, and thank you for your time

Are you sure it's the disc that came with that Mac?  It should be gray, and the model and version (10.6.x) should be printed on it in very tiny type.  It will only work on the same model and build period.
When you erased the internal HD, dis you specify the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or, if you really need it, Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, journaled) Format?
Why are you doing this?  Was there a problem?  If so, what (that might provide a clue)?

May not make a difference anyway. The Logitech support site does not show drivers for Mac OS for the F310:
    http://www.logitech.com/en-us/support/gamepad-f310?crid=411
I'd contact their support to find out if there is a Mac driver available, and if they can either give you a web link to get it, e-mail you the software, or snail-mail you a standard-size disk with the drivers.

I downloaded an HD movie onto my laptop from i-tunes.  It plays fine on my laptop, but when I plug in my HD projector, the movie quits.  When I unplug the projector, the movie starts again. I have never had a problem with projecting an itunes movie before this. Someone told me that i-tunes changed something so that movies can no longer be projected.  We have a home theatre and have watched movies this way quite regularly, so it would be a drag if Apple will prevent us from doing this in the future.

I don’t know about projection, but I’m unable to watch HD content in iTunes because my Apple 30-inch Cinema Display is not HDCP-compliant (which is part of an HD copy-protection scheme).
The other movies you’ve projected, were they HD as well? If not, it could be the same problem: your projector is not HDCP-compliant.

  • Lost windows vista cd that came with laptop

    Hey guys,
i own a t500 and i have lost my windows vista cd that came with it. I had planned to reformat my computer. What are my options to get a new copy of this cd? and lets say i wanted to upgrade to windows xp or 7, then which version would I need?
Thanks a ton guys, i appreciate it.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You probably made your own recovery discs for the laptop using the Rescue and Recovery restore disc creation wizard, which only allows you to make one copy of the discs (unless you made additional copies afterwards).
You can buy restore discs from Lenovo for Vista, but I would personally just go up to Windows 7; it's significantly better than Vista. If you were to upgrade to 7, you COULD get a set of Vista restore discs + a Windows 7 upgrade disc, or you could just go straight for a retail, full Windows 7 disc. (There are ways of getting an upgrade disc to work without having Vista installed; you'd need the OEM CD-Key on the sticker under your laptop, assuming it hasn't been worn away).
If you want to go back to XP, you could go for Vista/7 Professional with XP downgrade, which is more roundabout than the Vista+7 update, so you're better off getting some sort of XP restore discs or a retail copy of XP.

    No... do not move programs.
    About the iTunes library files
Your iTunes library files track the media you add to iTunes, how you've organized it, and other information such as playlists. By default, these two files are in your iTunes folder:
    Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music/iTunes/
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
    Windows Vista: C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\
    Windows 7: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\
    Windows 8: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\

I'm currently signed onto my home network and want to go on with another computer but don't remember my password for my network.  Does anyone know where to find this?  It's a password that I set myself, not the one that came with my router.

It's in your Keychain on the computer you usually use to connect to your network - the "kind" will be "AirPort Network Password".
Your Keychain can be opened by using the Keychain Access program. It is in your Utilities Folder.
Open Keychain Access, and type airport in the search field. You will see a number of entries. Choose the one with the name of your wireless network, open it, and check the box next to "show password". Before it reveals itself you will be asked for your login password - the one you use to log in to your MacBook.
The network password will appear in the box.
    Quit Keychain Access.
