Install password in 0.7 arch install(solved!)

Downloaded the arch 0.7 base .iso and managed to load xorg and kde.
While in x, I forgot to install the password.
Now, the arch log-in appears on reboot and I have no password.
I have tried the menu items to no avail.
Whazzup?  How to install passwd without X which doesn't show drom the log-in menu.

From you description I assume your talking about trying to login using a login manager. When you get to the login manager hit CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to the console, then at the login prompt type in your username and hit ENTER for the password (which should work if no password was set). then use passwd at the command line to set the password. Hit CTRL-ALT-F7 to get back the the login manager.
If that doesn't work you can boot up with the install cd, mount your root partion and edit [mount-point]/etc/shadow and delete the second field in the line for you user which will reset your password to nothing. For example I would change
username:###############:12662:0:99999:7:::
to
username::12662:0:99999:7:::
you may also have to remove the "x" in the second field for you user in [mount-point]/etc/passwd also
remove the cd and reboot.

Airport Extreme will not show USB drive installed Solved... At least for me!
Here's what I had to do to make it work with the newest 7.3.1 firmware.
Ready for this? No Joke Really!
    1. Connect your USB drive to the Airport Extreme.
    2. Turn it on.
    3. Open the Airport Utility.
    4. Go to Manual Setup.
    5. Choose Disks and File Sharing.
Yep, we are going to set file sharing before we even see the disk we want to share!
You (I) had to set File Sharing on and Share Disks over Ethernet checked as well as set the Work Group (In my case). THEN restart the Airport Extreme.
After it re-started... My USB Drive was now present and ready for use.
I also dis-allowed Guest access. I re-started ALL computers in my network, both Windows and MAC. The USB drive held and works GREAT!
I know... Most of you thought this was a joke, It's not!
I tried everything to get the USB drive to work and failed every time just like most other people. Doing it this way worked like a charm.
    Go Figure huh!
Hope this helps someone with this issue.

  • How to install windows on a system already running Arch? [SOLVED]

    Hello.
I use Arch for my daily use, but I'm having a big problem, my little brother. He wants to play videogames on the laptop and that's it, I know you can do it from Arch but I honestly don't want to install Steam neither anything else than what I need so I'm going to install Windows for him to play. I'm currently partitioning my HDD, but I was reading and I found out that you need GRUB in order to dual boot, I use syslinux, so my main question is, can I simply install windows and then install GRUB? Or do I have to do something before this?
Any help is welcome as I'm really new to dual booting Linux with Windows and the last time I used Windows was in 2006. So please help me or refer me to a good article as I'm scared to break something.

Syslinux works great!! And yeah, I had an option like that but it was inside Windows power management, not in my BIOS, I've dissabled it and it works like a charm... But I'm angry, I did all this, I bought this mother f***er 3 Steam games for more less 80 bucks, a 30 bucks PC gaming controller from Radioshack and he ended up downloading a Gameboy Emulator and playing some Pokémon game
Thank you very much for the help, everything works fine now. And merry Christmas

  • Installing Windows XP after Arch Linux already been installed [SOLVED]

    Here is my dilema:
I have a Fujitsu Lifebook T4010 Laptop with a Wacom Tablet built into the screen. About a month ago I installed Arch Linux on it. It took me a while to get everything working (tablet screen/function buttons/on rotate flip reso) but eventually I got it all working.
The thing is I feel like I'm not fully taking advantage of its tablet abilities. I want to be able to use it with Photoshop and Flash. I decided I should dual boot it with Windows XP / Arch.
So I cut down on my /home partition and freed up ~25 gigs of the total 80 gigs for Windows. When I went to install it told me the maximum number of partitions had been met.  I looked it up online and apparently you can only have 4 primary partitions and with the 4 that Arch currently occupies (boot/swap/root/home) it looks like I'm out of luck.
I'm thinking my only option is to combine my home partition with my root partition to free up a primary partition. People tell me it's easier when you have Windows installed first but to be honest it took me quite some time to get this laptop/tablet up and running and all of it's features working for me how I wanted and I don't want to have to go through it again.
If anyone has any advice, work arounds,  or could tell me how I would go about safely combining my home and root partition it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a ton,

After a second thought, you'd have to move the home partition as well, as the extended partition counts too. I'd start with an arch live cd, cfdisk, delete swap, make extended, 2 logical drives, format the partition, backup, move home's content. then delete home, create new primary, install windows, write grub again, put the new partitions into fstab and tell grub where to find windows.
EDIT: After a third thought, combining home and root might be easier: Just copy home's content to your root partition (if ther is enough room ...), unmount home, copy the stuff to /home and delete the home partition from fstab. Then delete the old home partition.
Copying the home's contents to the root partition was what I had in mind. I'm trying to figure out how I would go about doing that though.  If I copy the /home to the root partition from the old home partition - will it automatically pick it up if I delete the fstab entry. Also will it be possible to expand my /root partition after that to take up the space the home partion use to own?

  • Xterm won't run on fresh arch install [SOLVED]

I had to reinstall arch because I screwed up somehow when trying to upgrade the kernel (something about illegal blocks.)
This time, I installed from the ftp rather than the cd, in order to start out with kernel 2.6.28-ARCH. after I installed xorg, and a few other things, and after i used hwd -xa to write an xorg.conf file (also tried my old xorg.conf, but I got the same error), startx returned three errors. it couldn't load the ati or radeon modules, and it couldn't load type1 or record modules. to fix the radeon modules, I installed xf86-video-ati w/ pacman, to fix the others, I commented them out. after I started x (into windowmaker), xterm refused to run. I installed aterm, but it refused to run, as well. I tried reinstalling them, but to no avail.
also i'm getting error "config/hal couldn't initialize context" (didn't notice I was still getting that, since x was actually starting)
    any ideas?

If the file is present, it will simply edit the file and not overwrite it thereby causing headaches.
Also when you installed xorg, did you install the whole package? because if you didn't install xterm from the package, xterm obviously will not start up.
definately did. I will check the pts thing.

  • Small problem after installing - solved

After doing a soft-raid install, I forgot to edit my ect/fstab. Of all the things to forget! Ugh
The system still boots ok but because the file system in fstab is not using the raid md dev lines,  I can't get write permissions, even as root and I can't set a root password. Can I chroot back into my system from the install cd to edit the fstab to the correct format. I'm hoping I don't have to reinstall because of this. I have a very confusing setup with raid arrays. Is there a simple way i can fix my fstab?

  • Lib32 Package Not Installing[SOLVED]

I am on a 64 bit arch system. I tried to install the lib32-bluez package from the aur with yaourt. Everything went well, but the 32 bit application I was running was still complaining about "libbluetooth.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". So I went to /usr/lib32 and, of course, the library wasn't there. Is there another location that it could be installed to, or am I installing the wrong package?
    Thanks for your time.

This is something one must keep in mind when using an AUR helper.  Some helpers - especially yaourt - hide too much of the process of building and installing packages and end up making it easy to miss things like this.  But if the input I gave here was enough to figure it out, it sounds like you know your way around AUR building well enough.  If it's all working now, please mark the thread as solved.

  • Help getting Arch64 installed [SOLVED]

I'll try my best not to make this too wordy:
I rebuilt my system last weekend using the Arch 64 FTP ISO. It went very well. I had a major harddrive problem today so I tried to re-install with the exact same disc. It doesn't work. For some reason, any ISO that I burn for 64 bit Linux will simply not be recognized when BIOS looks to the disc. In order to not waste time, these are the details:
    1) The first attempt was with a disc that worked perfectly less than 7 days ago
    2) I tried different images from different servers, and they aren't recognized
    3) My system picks up on the copy of Knoppix I burned today
    4) That copy of Knoppix is on the same set of discs that I burned my SEVEN copies of the ISO
    5) Other live discs that I have also start properly
    6) My system picks up on a 32 bit Arch disc that I have
    7) And no, I did not copy the ISOs themselves. They burned the way that they should
BIOS is fine. My DVD drive seems to be fine. The discs that I'm using seem to be fine. Nothing at all seems to help.
    This one is bad. Help?!?!?!?!?!?!
It turns out the Arch 64 FTP install ISOs are broken. How I got the one that I had to work is beyond me. My best guess is that there were still install files from the failed attempt that I had already on the harddisk. The 64 bit Base ISO using FTP as the install method worked perfectly.

  • Read only after install [SOLVED -- systemd related]

Anyone know why a new (booted ~2-3 times) install would suddenly mount read-only?  /etc/fstab is fine, /etc/mtab reports rootfs / as rw, and I am logged in as root, but I get "read-only filesystem", hence there are no logs, etc.

DSpider wrote:You probably removed "ro" from syslinux.cfg.
Nope.   I have a startup service I use on fedora, and since the target I usually use wasn't apparent, I casually systemctl enabled it with WantedBy=local-fs.target, figuring if that was too early it would just fail (it writes to to disk).
Using "mount -o remount,rw /" worked, so I tried a few things like switching fstab to use a UUID instead of a device node, that didn't work.  Finally I disabled the service and everything is back to normal.
I did this a couple of times (enabling, rebooting, disabling, rebooting) just to confirm that was the cause. I guess that target runs before the rw remount, maybe this causes systemd to crap out in some way.  Shame it can't just fail the service, log it, and continue.  Maybe even an oversight verging on "bug", though I am sure they are aware of it already.
I'd mark this "SOLVED" but I don't see a button...

  • Mounting saved pkg's during install [solved]

I have copied my saved pkg cache "/var/cache/pacman/pkg/" to an extra partition. With the idea of not having to re-download them for a new install. (about 1.3 gigs)
During the install I mount it to /src/arch/pkg  But when I continue, it can't find /src/arch/pkg/setup.  So I mount the CD, check and see that it has a
"setup" folder under it's "pkg" folder. I copy that over to my pkg's. Now setup can't find the pacman database, which turns out to be "current.db.tar.gz"(I think), also in the "pkg" folder on the CD.
So my question is, how would I create the "current.db.tar.gz" with my latest cache.
Also, would I need to create the "/src/arch/pkg/setup/packages.txt" also? And if so, how?
    Thanks for your help!
[Edit] Note: my install cd is current-08-20061218-i686.iso

ok, I found that on the ftp mirrors I can get
    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/current/os/i686 … .db.tar.gz
as well as the setup folder...
    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/current/os/i686 … ckages.txt
    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/current/os/i686 … pkg.tar.gz
Would it work to just copy these?  Or should it be generated off my current cache/pacman/pkg folder?  I would rather not download all the files off the mirror, but just keep the ones I use and have already downloaded.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Pacman Broken After MLDonkey install [Solved]

    So,
I installed MlDonkey. I than tried to download another package. I had an error where it could not grab files off of extra any more. So here are the steps that I took to get pacman working correctly again.
    # cd /etc/pacman.d
    # cp mirrorlist mirrorlist.backup
    # nano mirrorlist.backup
    # sed '/^#\S/ s|#||' -i mirrorlist.backup
    # rankmirrors -n 6 mirrorlist.backup > mirrorlist
It took a LONG time when I actually ranked the mirrors around 10 minutes. Also do not forget the the sudo command if you are in your user, and on the last command even when I used sudo it kept telling me permission denied, I ended up just su into root and than it worked. I am not sure as to why. I hope this helps people.

Actually, I was more concerned about updates for packages from AUR. yaourt would handle AUR packages as if they were in a repository, and update them, solving dependency problems.
Now what I fear is, that if some regular library gets an update, it may not updated on my system in the first place, because pacman only sees that the older version is needed for the AUR software, but is not capable of updating the AUR package (which works with the new library version) automatically. So updates will break some software unless I remove it first and install the latest version manually.

I want to remove old accounts and create a new one. Currently, I have to authenticate whenever I want to save any of my files. Somehow I fouled up the user library. Will an archive and install of the OS (10.5.8) correct this on my iMac PPC?

Backup all of your data before starting anything.
If you go with Niel's solution,  be sure to get a copy of all your data.
There are several way of proceding:
    1) fix permissions on your account.
    2) You could copy all your files to a flash drive.  Delete on the hd.  Copy files back to hd.  This will adjust the permissions.
    3) create a new account.  copy old data to flash drive.  Copy data to new account.
    I'd create a new account.
Download BatChmod 1.51.  Will allow you to change your permissions.
    Works on 10.5 and 10.6
I am using 1.51 on Mac OS 10.4.11
    Download BatChmod 1.37
(for previous system versions as 1.5 has not been tested on any other system, though may work.)

if it has gone  away, some preference file got messed up on your account. Rename the appropriate  Preference file.
