Install problem with Mavericks

I have downloaded Mavericks but after I restarted to install it fails half way. It leaves this message:
"The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail
Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
Click restart to restart your computer and try again"
I have done this multiple times and the same error keeps happening.
Any tips or suggestions?

Exactly the same problem here!
I need the comp to be working and can't get back the the other OS desktop nor get this new instal completed...Frustration!!!

Performance problem with Mavericks. My Mac is extremly slow after upgrading to Mavericks. What can i do to solve that?

If you are still experiencing slow down issues, it maybe because of a few other reasons.
Our experience with OS X upgrades, and Mavericks is no exception, is that users have installed a combination of third party software and/or hardware that is incompatible and/or is outdated that causes many negative performance issues when upgrading to a new OS X version.
Your Mac's hard drive maybe getting full.
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Commercial Antivirus software can slow down and negatively impact the normal operation of OS X.
Do you have apps like MacKeeper or any other maintenance apps like CleanMyMac 1 or 2, TuneUpMyMac or anything like these apps, installed on your Mac? These types of apps, while they appear to be helpful, can do too good a job of data "cleanup" causing the potential to do serious data corruption or data deletion and render a perfectly running OS completely dead and useless leaving you with a frozen, non-functional Mac.
Your Mac may have way too many applications launching at startup/login.
Your Mac may have old, non-updated or incompatible software installed.
Your Mac could have incompatible or outdated web browser extensions, plugins or add-ons.
Your Mac could have connected third party hardware that needs updated device drivers.
It would help us to help you if we could have some more technical info about your iMac.
If you so choose, please download, install and run Etrecheck.
Etrecheck was developed as a simple Mac diagnostic report tool by a regular Apple Support forum user and technical support contributor named Etresoft. Etrecheck is a small, unobstrusive app that compiles a static snapshot of your entire Mac hardware system and installed software.
This is a free app that has been honestly created to provided help in diagnosing issues with Macs running the new OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
It is not malware and can be safely downloaded and installed onto your Mac.

Copy/paste and post its report here in another reply thread so that we have a complete profile of your Mac's hardware and installed software so we can all help continue with your Mac performance issues.

  • Are any patches in the works to correct problems with Maverick

Is apple trying to correct problems with Maverick?

    Donald Morgan wrote:
Remember there should be NO OTHER APPLICATIONS RUNNING when you do an update or Upgrade.
It really should not matter for an OS upgrade or update if other apps are running when you begin. All the actual installing of files is done by the system user (also known as root or superuser) after all regular users are logged out, which of course terminates all user processes.

  • HT201380 keep having scrolling problems with Maverick on both iMac and Mac Pro despite downloading mail software update

Have scrolling problems with Maverick despite downloading mail update on both IMAC and Mac Pro
Have to reboot and it helps for awhile then stalls again

The Mac OS X 10.4.7 Update introduced connection issues as a result of (according to the documentation) "Mail now supports connecting to mail servers through a SOCKS proxy". This probably has nothing to do with your problem, but it'd be worth going to System Preferences > Network and making sure the SOCKS Proxy is not enabled in the network configuration used to connect to the Internet.
Also, it looks like the crashes you're talking about are actually freezes, i.e. Mail becomes unresponsive rather than quitting unexpectedly. In Mail, open Window > Activity Viewer, and see whether Mail displays there what it's doing when it freezes. Actually, you may be able to avoid having to force quit Mail by canceling whatever it's doing (by clicking on the red stop icon of the activity).
Reinstalling Mail will probably accomplish nothing, but it might be worth reinstalling the Combo Update for the type of machine and the version of Mac OS X you're using (which you would have to do anyway if you wanted to reinstall Mail):
Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo Update for Intel
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, and no applications should be running while installing it.

  • Three Problems with Mavericks

I have three problems with Mavericks:
    1. I can't create a Downloads Folder or any folder in the dock. The folder is replaced with documents ONLY. When I create an alias, it's replaced with a question mark unless I leave another alias in my user folder?
    2. I have a second monitor hooked up to my MBP, but when I enter Time Machine, a large solid black rectangle overlays and blocks the Time Machine backup info screen?
    3. I downloaded a Filemaker update and received "Filemaker can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. I think the workaround was to push Control or Option to Open, but now the file keeps reappearing on my desktop after it's been installed, trashed and the computer restarted. Other trashed files and logs are also popping up in my user folder, long after they've been deleted...very strange. Any suggestions to any of these problems?

I'm researching this and other issues with SMB - you might find this post useful
Windows computers can not access smb-shares in Lion
It seems your connections from Windows (or perhaps from any user connecting via SMB - perhaps including home shares via SMB?) need to specify DOMAIN\user (eg SERVERNAME\user)... more info at the post above.

There is a large thread relating to Gmail, but nothing that sounds like that.
Nobody here knows what Apple is going to do.
You might try removing the Gmail account and then add it back in.

  • Is anyone have problems with Maverick installation?

I had problems with Maverick installation.  It moved slowly and I lost the ability to use my Finder.  It was riddled with bugs.  I am trying to figure out why.  I ended up erasing hard drive and reinstalling Mountian Lion.

No problems with Mavericks here ..
How much free storage space on your iMac?
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
The v10.9 Mavericks file is a little over 5GB's and Mavericks does require a high speed broadband connection.

  • I think I have a problem with Mavericks: can anyone help,please?

A couple of days ago I installed Mavericks on top of my existing Mountain Lion OS. Not before I backed up the ML version with Time Machine, though.... :-)
Initially I thought everthing was fine, but then started to notice a few things that bothered me, which have not gone away. In fact, I think this install is now a potential problem. Unlike many other people, elsewhere on this forum, I have not noticed the calamitous slowing down and general unusability of Mavericks. I'm using a prety new i7 iMac ( the new flat one) with 32 GB of RAM.Everytihng worked great with Mountain Lion. However, The following anomalies have cropped up: Mail is taking over 30" to send a simple email. In ML it was almost instantaneous. I feel that Mail is not performing as it did in ML, and the same goes for Safari. It "feels" odd and slow and can take an age to load up pages. In fact one particular page would not load properly at all, but worked fine in Firefox. In the end got it to work in Sfari, but ithis type of behaviour doesn't instill confidence. Things got wierder...
An update to iMovie got " stuck" in the dowload process, and was perpetually downloading in Launchpad. It kept oscillating from approx 61 MB to aprrox 84 MB of a 1.94 GB file. Then I did a disk utiltiy test of my system drive and it suddenly stated that the drive need repairing. I booted up in Recovery Mode and tested the drive, which came back all clear! I booted up normally again and now the disk utility won't even complete a full diagnosis of the drive! It will diagnos all my other drives fine though.... :-s  It keeps getting stuck on: Checking Volume Bitmap, and won't go any further. So, I did what some other person did on another thread, which seemed to clear up his problems; namely: simply reinstalled Mavericks  from Recovery mode. This did not improve anything for me. The same issues remain. In fact as I type this, I notice that I'm using nearly 23 GB of my 32 GB of RAM, and all I have open is Safari, Disk Utility and Mail ! To quote Hans Solo: " I've got a b-a-a-a-d feeling about this..."
So, this is my long-winded way of asking: what shall I do? I would like to boot in Recovery Mode and reinstall my back up from an external drive. Does anyone have any advice about this, please? If I restore from my backup, will I actually get the ML OS back on the computer, or will  I be stuck with Mavericks trying to impose itself ,as some people reported? I do want to use Mavericks, but not in the condition it's in right now. Also,  really don't want to perfom a clean install and migrate everything over from the Time Machine back up....
    Thanks for any advice.

I don't think that a software update from Apple will solve the issues that you are having. You have a rogue installation. After you posted I have just done the following:
Disk Utility can verify  my partitioned Volume (including my boot disk) AND REPAIR the non-boot disks on the same Volume without a glitch. It repairs the non-boot disks containing data smoothly.
I have used Mail to send some mails from some Yahoo and Hotmail accounts to my Thunderbird client containing GMail accounts - absolutely normal.
I have iLife '09 but my iMovie '09 and iPhoto '09 open in a jiffy and I see no issues here. I have 6GB RAM (Maximum) on an early 2008 Macbook Pro with a 750GB hard drive partitioned with 120GB reserved for the Boot Drive.
I am sorry that I cannot help further but I am sure there must be a way to reinstall the software without having to revert to restoring your ML backup. I have two clones and if you have such I would attempt to do that through that rather than through Time Machine - that is of course if you have a cloned drive.
    Good luck!

  • Problems with Mavericks upgrade?

Thinking about uprgrading to Mavericks, but have been coming across a lot of threads/reviews about people losing date and/or having real problems with the process. It's been a while since I've been here, and just wanted to ask for an opinion/advice.  I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Should I stay away from it, or if I do, what advice/tips do you have for a smooth upgrade?
OR -- is it possible to get Mountian Lion Somewhere?  I looked for it in the app store, but couldn't find it.  I heard some negative reviews about Lion, so I just kept Snow Leopard, rather than take any chances with a new OS.

Mavericks is excellent on my MBP 8,2. Fast and flawless. Faster than Mountain Lion.
New features I like: iBooks, iCloud keychain, enhanced dictation.
    A few things to consider:
Any new OS has some bugs and incompatibilities with old software and hardware. If you are uncomfortable with basic Mac troubleshooting, then perhaps waiting would be a better strategy. I didn't have any problems, with installation or after.
If you have any mission-critical software or peripherals, make sure they are compatible first. Check your apps for compatability here: RoaringApps - Application compatibility and feature support for OS X and iOS
Mavericks does not play well with some old/bad software and hardware:
Crapware: anything that purports to "clean", "monitor", "protect", or "accelerate"  your mac. Unnecessary on Macs and often harmful. Examples: CleanMyMac and MacKeeper (the King of Crapware).
    antivirus software. Unnecessary on Macs.
    WD hard drives.
    Before you install Mavericks:
backup your old system, either with Time Machine, or better yet, a bootable backup.
have enough RAM. The specs say 2GB, but 4 is probably a more realistic minimum.
uninstall Crapware, antivirus software, and any other junk you don't need.
repair your hard drive and permissions with Disk Utility
boot into safe mode, and then run the installer Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
ML is available here: OS X Mountain Lion - Apple Store (U.S.)

  • Trackpad problem with maverick

since i installed os maverick i have some problems with the trackpad losing the pointer. The computer doesnt freeze but the pointer goes away. The only way you can get it back is reboot. Any one else with this problem and any ideas on how ro correct it.
    Thanks

It worked for me, and after a PRAM reset (did not do the SMC reset) all kinds of other irritations disappeared as well. MacMini was slow to start up after downloading Maverick, took at least a minute before it was up and running, now back to someting like 10-15 sec. Trackpad does not loose pointer anymore on startup, speed on google chrome has increased 10 fold. Magic!!!. Never tried PRAM reset before, but it solves things

  • Epson Driver Problem with Mavericks?

After hooking up a new Epson-XP610 printer with my Mac Mini, Printers and Scanners in Mavericks System Prefs shows two printers -- one labeled as an Epson-610 Series with Driver version 1.0 and the other labeled Epson_XP_610_Series_2 with Driver version 9.14. The first one appears to be a wi-fi version since it has a trimmed down "lite printer utility" that directs me to a Bonjour page on Epson's web site, which tells me there is no software or firmware update for that printer. The second one has a more elaborate printer utility and appears to be the one that's hardwired to my computer. Epson's Software Updater tells me the Series 2 printer should be using Driver version 9.17 and the Mavericks page on Epson's web site also tells me I should be using Driver  version 9.17 for the printer while relying on Apple's software updater  for the scanner driver used by Image Capture. But when I download the 9.17 driver and click "install" the driver version shown in the printer utility still shows up as 9.14.  Why is Mavericks refusing to load the updated printer driver and forcing me to use the old 9.14 version?

My theory with the printer problems that people have with Mavericks is that the printer manufacturer applications and "utilities" are not very good. I think that the printer manufacturers still think of the Mac market as being of less value than the PC market, and as such, the software engineers that design their Mac software are not Rhodes scholars. Not the best and brightest. Kind of like Al Qaeda: they do not assign the smartest guys to be the suicide bombers.
    Try this:
Go to Applications > System Preferences > Printers and Scanners
Control-click on one of your printers and select "Reset printing system..."
This will delete all your print drivers.
Do a factory reset on your printer. You will have to refer to your printer's manual for how.
This is very important: uninstall all other printer manufacturer software, applications, and "utilities".
If you connect to your printer via WiFi, you will have to reconnect it to your network and enter your network password.
Go back to Printers and Scanners and let it download a print driver from Apple.
If this does not work then you may also have to reset your wifi network (if you print via WiFi) by powering everything down (modem, router, computer, printer) and then powering each item up. Power them up in that order (modem, router, computer, printer), and let each power up fully before going on to the next.
The same idea also works with misbehaving scanners: remove the printer manufacturer scanner apps and use Image Capture instead; let Image Capture download the scanner driver from Apple.

  • Wifi problems with Mavericks

I'm having serious problemas with wi-fi connection since I install Mavericks on a MacBook Pro (late 2011). Can anyone helpe me, please?

Most Routers provided by your ISP are only 2.4GHz band Routers. In that band, which was originally set aside for 11Mbits/sec, there are only THREE Clear channels for high-speed operation, 1, 6, and 11. Each of these spills over into two channels up and two channels down from its center channel (i.e., Channel 6 uses 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8)
From your list, there are at least nine other networks nearby. That means each channel has three or more Routers on it, and it cannot be reliable when used that way.
Mavericks does change the way it uses WiFi slightly, and this may be one of the changes (that it will not connect if you cannot establish a good connection from the outset).
I recommend you ADD a Dual Band Router to your network, or replace the ISP's Router with a Dual-Band Router. This adds 8 to 12 additional channels in the 5GHz band, and will allow you to get connected and stay connected at higher data rates.
