Install questions on OVM Manager  and Oracle Linux

I installed OVM Server 3.0.3 on a 64-bit server class box.
Getting tight with a spare box, I tried to install OVM Manager on the Oracle VirtualBox as a VM and also to install it on the top of OVM Server on the same hardware box but neither has been successful.
So, I'm thinking of rather installing OVM Manager on one of my laptops.
Before proceeding to wipe out the data on my laptop, I'd like to check couple of things:
1. I take it that the 32-bit OVM Manager should have no problem working with 64-bit OVM Server, correct?
2. The OVM Manager itself doesn't include with a bootable Linux image and should be installed on the top of a pre-installed Linux (e.g., Oracle Linux), so I need to install Oracle Linux first on my laptop and install OVM Manager on top of it, right?
Thanks for your help in advance!

You'll need at least 4GB of RAM for the Manager for a test/development environment, with 8GB+ recommended for Production, to cover both Oracle Database SE and Oracle WebLogic.

  • How to start virtual OVM Manager and restore server pool which hosts it?

    It had to happen... the day I migrate our OVM Manager from an ESX host into an Oracle VM, we have a massive NetApp outage, and everything fails to come back. As a result of having lock errors when trying to start any VMs I noted on the forum various solutions and ended up following the steps concerning stopping ovs-agent and removal of /etc/ovs-agent/db/* on all the servers. Next I re-added the repo to all the servers using repos.py, but of course now none of the servers are in a pool so the --list command shows them as [R] rather than [*], and the /OVS directory is not yet mapped. So the next stage, according to the instructions which I am following, describes using the 'Restore' option in the OVM Manager GUI. Given that /OVS is not mounted and all of the servers are now config-less, I can't see how I can start the OVM Manager VM to get to the aforementioned "restore" option...
    Thank Jeebus I kept the ESX copy of OVM manager on (but powered down), as I was able to fire it up and do the restore, and now everything is hunky dory. However, this is our Dev platform and I was going to build the Prod platform and deploy OVM Manager straight into the OVM architecture via the template, rather than having it on ESX, but this issue on the Dev install has made me think twice about the mobius nature of managing the VM architecture from within the VM architecture...
    I am assuming I am missing some sort of commandline knowledge, so... given:
    - empty db directory
    - root repos [R] on all servers
    - as yet unmapped /OVS
    ...how to get the server pool up and get something back into /OVS, and then start my OVM Manager VM so I can 'restore'? Is it even possible? because if it isn't, I'll be blowed if the Prod OVM manager is going to get deployed like this...
    And no, there's no money in the budget for extra tin just to sit there running the OVM Manager and nothing else.
    TIA
    Kev

    Still nobody seems to know of how to create a server pool on the CLI (outside of OVM Manager) though...There is no way to create a server pool on the CLI without Oracle VM Manager. You either need to use the Web UI of the Manager, or use the ovmcli command-line tool. Both of those require Oracle VM Manager to be running.
    However, once the Pool is created, you do not need the Manager to be running to perform simple tasks like starting/stopping guests. That can be done with the xm command-line tool.
    I agree with you about running VM Manager as a guest of the Oracle VM Server: I actually don't recommend this in production, unless you have at least two Server Pools. Then you can have the Manager of Pool A hosted by Pool B and vice-versa. Most often however, I recommend a completely independent Manager machine, either physical or hosted on a separate virtualization stack.

  • Lost connection between ovm-manager and ovm-server (ovm 3.1)

    Hi,
    I have a manager as a VM on my laptop and a physical server as an ovm-server. Everything is fine when i boot the server but after some time, the manager stop to show the information from the server. in the ovs-agent log file the following messages are repeated regulary
    [2013-08-29 13:06:19 6160] DEBUG (notification:289) Trying to connect to manager.
    [2013-08-29 13:06:20 6160] DEBUG (notification:291) Connected to manager.

    I did not reboot neither the server nor the manager. No IP change. Rebooting the manager has no effect.
    The only way to restore communication is to restart the ovs-agent on the server, but this restart disable the network card. I must be physical on the server to restart the network.
    any help will be very helpful

    Hi,
    The are many steps to verify:
    Verify with your firewall on the Oracle VM Manager system (service iptables stop).
    Verify with a ping between OVM Manager and OVM Server using the IP Address and using the hostname for each one (from OVM Manager : ping ovm-server ; and from OVM Server: ping ovm-manager).
    I hope this can help you

  • Parameters of NFS in Solaris 10 and Oracle Linux 6 with ZFS Storage 7420 in cluster without database

    Hello,
    I have ZFS 7420 in cluster and OS Solaris 10 and Oracle Linux 6 without DB and I need mount share NFS in this OS and I do not know which parameters are the best for this.
    Wich are the best parameters to mount share NFS in Solaris 10 or Oracle Linux 6?
    Thanks
    Best regards.

    Hi Pascal,
    My question is because when We mount share NFS in some servers for example Exadata Database Machine or Super Cluster  for best performance we need mount this shares with specific parameters, for example.
    Exadata
    192.168.36.200:/export/dbname/backup1 /zfssa/dbname/backup1 nfs rw,bg,hard,nointr,rsize=131072,wsize=1048576,tcp,nfsvers=3,timeo=600 0 0
    Super Cluster

    Now,
    My network is 10GBE
    What happen with normal servers only with OS (Solaris and Linux)?
    Which parameters I need use for best performance?
    or are not necessary specific parameters.

  • Down Time for  Installing APEX 4.2.1 and oracle HTTP server?

    Hi, all:
    I plan to install APEX 4.2.1 and oracle HTTP server on 10.2.0.4 database.
    Is there any down time required during installation?
    I mean during installation, do I need to block users from accessing the database?
    Can they do their normal data entry / inquiry?
    thanks,
    John
    ps. There will be server backup before installation.

    Hi,
    Documentation says
    >
    3.1 Recommended Pre-installation Tasks
    Before installing Oracle Application Express, Oracle recommends that you complete the following steps:
    Review and satisfy all Oracle Application Express installation requirements. See "Oracle Application Express Installation Requirements".
    Shut down with normal or immediate priority the Oracle Database instances where you plan to install Oracle Application Express. On Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) systems, shut down all instances on each node.
    An alternative to shutting down the database is to prevent all users from accessing Oracle Application Express when upgrading your installation from a previous release of Oracle Application Express. Oracle only recommends this option in high availability production environments where planned outages are not available. For all other scenarios, the database should be shut down.
    To disable access to Oracle Application Express when the existing installation is using the Application Express Listener, shut down the appropriate application server where the Application Express listener is deployed.
    To disable user access to Oracle Application Express when the existing installation is using the Oracle HTTP Server with mod_plsql, you should either shut down the Web server or disable the Application Express Database Access Descriptor of the Web server.
    For an existing installation using the embedded PL/SQL gateway, you should disable the Oracle XML DB Protocol Server by setting the HTTP port to 0. This can be accomplished by starting SQL*Plus, connecting as SYS to the database where Oracle Application Express is installed, and running:
    EXEC DBMS_XDB.SETHTTPPORT(0);
    Once you have prevented access from Oracle Application Express users, you should log into SQL*Plus as SYS, connecting to the database where Oracle Application Express is installed, and query V$SESSION to ensure there are no long running sessions which would interfere with the upgrade process.
    Back up the Oracle Database installation.
    Oracle recommends that you create a backup of the current Oracle Database installation before you install Oracle Application Express. You can use Oracle Database Recovery Manager, which is included in the Oracle Database installation, to perform the backup.
    See Also:
    Oracle Database Backup and Recovery User's Guide
    Start the Oracle Database instance that contains the target database.
    After backing up the system, you must start the Oracle instance that contains the target Oracle database. Do not start other processes such as a Web Listener. However, if you are performing a remote installation, make sure the database listener for the remote database has started.

  • Difference: Oracle Access Manager and Oracle Access Management

    Dear,
    What is the difference between Oracle Access Manager and Oracle Access Management, both 11g
    thanks

    Oracle Access Manager is the foundation(main product), of the new Oracle Access Management platform. Access Manager provides the core functionality of Web Single Sign On(SSO), authentication, authorization, centralized policy administration and agent management, real-time session management and auditing. Built as a 100% Java solution, Access Manager is extremely scalable to handle Internet scale deployments and works with existing heterogeneous environments in the enterprise with agents certified on hundreds of web servers and application servers. Access Manager provides rich functionality, extreme scalability and high availability thereby increasing security, improving user experience and productivity and enhancing compliance while reducing total cost of ownership.
    Oracle Access management solution provides: Comprehensive Web Access Management, Web Single Sign-On, Identity Propagation, and Federation;Mobile and Social Sign-On;Real-time External Authorization;daptive Access and Fraud Detection
    So basically one is a product and the other one is an entire solution.
    I hope this helps,
    Thiago Leoncio.

  • How many time to install/configure OVM Manager and OVM Server ?

    Hello,
    I wish to have your experience feedback on the mean time needed to install both OVM Server and OVM Manager in a production environement, with e.g : 2 CPUs, 4 G of RAM, or for 4 CPUs and 8 G of RAM.
    Regards,
    Lionel

    Not enough information. XE is not supported in a production environment so you will need to install a SE or EE version of Oracle Database. I would personally use EE because the Virtual Manager comes with a single use license that covers running the VM Manager on either edition. No extra cost to run EE over SE.
    You can use kicstart to rapidly deploy any VM Server. If you get your scripting right... it takes less than 10 minutes.

  • Problems installing  OEM Cloud control 12c in Oracle Linux 6.X

    Hi
    I'm triying to install Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud 12c in a Oracle Linux 6.4
    Looking at the installation documentation in in http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24628_01/install.121/e22624/preinstall_req_packages.htm#CHDEJAFA it sys that I need the packages :
    glibc-devel-2.5-49-i686 (This is a 32-bit package)
    glibc-devel-2.5-49-x86_64 (This is a 64-bit package)
    But I cant find them in the yum repositories.
    If I query to my linux wihch version of glibc-devel are installed the output is
    [root@emc tmp]# rpm -qa |grep glibc-devel
    glibc-devel-2.12-1.107.el6.x86_64
    And if i try to install it i receive an error compiling ins_sqlplus.mk due to ld because it can't find crt1.o
    Can anybody help me?
    thanks

    What is the version of EM that you are trying to Install? Is it 12.1.0.1 EM ?
    a) If this is em 12.1.0.1 then its a know issues to us which is fixed in next release ( you can refer bug:13833746 from MOS or open an SR to get more detail on this bug)
    Run this below to make usre you have the packages.
    # rpm -qa --queryformat "%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}(%{ARCH})\n" | grep glibc-dev
    glibc-devel-2.12-1.80.el6(i686)
    glibc-devel-2.12-1.80.el6(x86_64)
    Checking the pre-requisites step fails as it is looking for i386 instead of i686. (On OEL6, prefix i686 denotes the 32 bit package - and not i386). If the 32 bit and 64 bit glibc-devel packages are present on the system ( check it manually) this Warning can be safely Ignored. Continue with the installation. If you are not sure, pls log an SR with Oracle support and they will help you. Donot ignore the warning in case of any doubts, work with support to get it solved. If you ignore the warning and packages are not on the host then you will get linking error during the install.
    b) If this is em 12.1.0.2, pls log an SR and send me the SR number.

  • Some questions about Skype Manager and Skype Conne...

    Hallo,
    I found one of your post:
    That, if I have some questions I may contact with  Contact our solutions team
    Sadly that link wont work...
    I have few questions and also I contacted with Microsoft support, but sadly they wasn’t able to help me. Only what they suggests, that I may contact with Skype Team trough to Forum, or Facebook...
    So, I choose first one and maybe you can help me, or redirect my question !?
    About my questions:
    As I understand Skype for business is just name what contain two free software, like Skype manager and Skype connect. Also those are free, without charge ?
    Also I read that there are two different accounts, like Premium and regular one. Premium contains some benefit. So, If I use that Skype for business manager system to I may or can add some premium accounts for some my staff and leave others with regular account ? I don’t have that manager systems installed jet, but what I read, I understand that I maybe just split credit - or is there way how I may also share regular and premium conots ?
    Also, Right now my customers have 25 workers, but what - if soon my another customer also want to use Skype Service, and he have 50 - 100 workers ? Will be there special price for different amount of users on one firm ?
    And at last, firm who I represent right now are using Elion VoiP (Elion, is Estonian ISP) service, trough to xLite program.
    Sadly that one wont work properly, it will hack, or you cant hear other people and so on. With, Skype everything works fine. So, if he will starting to use Skype manger and will make account for every workers (sips) can he bound those sips with same VoiP numbers what he will use right now with Elion ? Or if not, is there some way how to redirect those numbers (to lose those numbers, is sadly out of question) ?
    I hope, you can help me guy´s.
    Best regards
    Rainer

    Tere Rainer,
    indeed we don't have the solutions team offer any longer. Let me try to answer some of your questions here.
    Skype Manager and Skype Connect itself are free of charge. But obviously you can purchase and distribute paid products via Skype Manager.
    Yes, you can freely distribute Premium subscription to Manager group members and leave others without. You can do the same with all kind of Skype products, e.g. Skype numbers, calling subscriptions etc.
    There are no discounts with Skype Manager purchases. It's a tool to simplify administration.
    Unfortunately you cannot transfer numbers to Skype connect. For more details on which features are supported and how they work please have a look here: https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA10549/what-is-skype-connect-and-how-does-it-work
    I hope my answers could help a bit already.

  • GUIDE: Oracle VM VirtualBox and Oracle Linux NIC bonding

    Author: Dude
    Date: 01-Jun-2013
    Version: B
    Last updates:
    23-Jul-2013, changes required due to forum upgrade
    The following  is provided in the hope that it might be useful. If you wish to use it for the purpose of reference, presentation or education, please include the link or information to this forum posting. Thank you!
    What is Linux network interface bonding? Simply put, the Linux system provides a kernel driver, which can create a logical network device (bond) using 2 or more Network Interface Controllers (NIC) to accomplish link-aggregation and adapter fault-tolerance. For more information, please see the Deployment Guide at https://linux.oracle.com/documentation/
    The channel bonding interface supports several modes of operation. In a typical active-backup set up for fault-tolerance, the system performs MII-based health monitoring of the network interface slaves (eth0, eth1) and assigns them according to bond options and interface availability. In active-backup mode (mode 1), only the current active network device is seen externally.
    Linux bonding for fault-tolerance under Oracle VM VirtualBox does not seem to function as advertised. Searching the Internet for more information shows that other people have tried to set up Linux bonding using various virtualization products, virtual host network adapter and bonding options, but without success.
    It appears the management of Media Access Control addresses (MAC) interferes with internal routing methods between the host and the virtual machine guest. Using the modinfo bonding command (fig. 1) shows a listing of available parameters for the bonding kernel module. The fail_over_mac parameter addresses the Mac address issue in VirtualBox.
    Fig.1
    # modinfo bonding
    filename:       /lib/modules/2.6.39-400.17.1.el6uek.x86_64
                    /kernel/drivers/net/bonding/bonding.ko
    parm:           fail_over_mac:For active-backup,
                    do not set all slaves to the same MAC;
                    0 for none (default), 1 for active, 2 for follow (charp)
    Configuration Example
    Virtualization Product: Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.2.10
    VM Guest OS: Oracle Linux 6.4 (x64)
    VM adapter settings: Bridged Adapter, Paravirtualized Network (virtio-net)
    Adapter1 (eth0): 080027436617, en0, Ethernet 1
    Adapter2 (eth1): 08002708F36A, en0, Ethernet 1
    Note: If you wish to reset the network adapter names and MAC addresses used by the Oracle Linux guest system, erase the content of /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and restart the virtual machine.
    1. Create or modify the following configuration files:
    /etc/modprobe.d/bonding-eth0_eth1.conf
    alias bond0 bonding
    /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-bond0

    /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
    DEVICE=eth0
    BOOTPROTO=none
    ONBOOT=yes
    MASTER=bond0

    DEVICE=eth1
    BOOTPROTO=none
    ONBOOT=yes
    MASTER=bond0
    SLAVE=yes
    USERCTL=no
    2. Restart the system or network services (root):
    Fig. 2
    # service network restart
    Configuration Test
    Enter the following commands as user root to verify proper operation of NIC bonding:

As it can be seen from the syslog and ifconfig command output, the bond0 interface was automatically assigned either the MAC address of eth0 or eth1 and the fail-over worked as advertised.
    Good luck!

    *.db_flash_cache_file='/d09/db_flash_cache/db_flash_file.raw'
    *.db_flash_cache_size=32G
    I have accomplished this on Oracle database 11.2.0.2.0 on Oracle Linux 5.5 before, I don't think new version of database cause the issue but I'm not sure is there any smart flash cache issue with the Oracle Linux 6.1?
    Note:
    I need to use Oracle Linux 6.1 instead of Oracle Linux 6.2 and can't updated the kernel to UEK2 because the SSD PCI-E card only support on this distro and kernel version.

    Hi;
    Oracle Enterprise Linux was changed to Oracle Linux, isn't ?
    Oracle stopped calling their Linux distro as "Oracle Enterprise Linux" since OEL5.5 or 5.6 (I'm not sure). Therefore, today there is Oracle Linux only? If so, I'm using OL6.1 also means OEL6.1, correct?
    But, If the doc really means Oracle Enterprise Linux only then should it means OEL5.5 or 5.6?AFAIK both refer to Oracle Linux.If somebody mention they have OEL6.1 or Oracle linux 6.1 than I accept it Oracle linux(Enterprise)

  • Conceptual questions with document management and Apex:

    Hello Everyone,
    I have reviewed or participated in thread discussions focusing primarily on subject matters concerning text editors, spellcheckers and document printing. The reason for this is due to our client requesting the creation of a basic centralized document management system that will enable users to create, edit and print technical documents in a database centric web-based environment. The caveat is that the client would like the same basic functionality that users get from MS Word. I know about FCKeditor or TinyMCE and their associated spellcheckers. What concerns me is that I have not found a possible plug-in to handle tracking changes, no one wants to re-read a large multiple page document again when all they would rather do is just view the changes. I know there are possible database schemas that might facilitate this type of functionality; I am just hoping it is more of a plug-in function.
    So with all that being said my dilemma is how to approach the design of such an application using Apex, if that is possible. Some questions I have are:
    1. Do design the application where you have a text field that contains the entire document, which could be as many as 25 or more pages?
    2. Or do you break down the document in to multiple text fields and then assimilate them in to a single multi page document when printing?
    3. Would you store the document data using XML under condition 1, 2, both or not at all?
    4. What types of data tables might exist, such as tables for document templates, work-in-process and final documents or something else?
    I know there are a lot of other concepts/questions to consider and a large part of the design approach would be based on client requirements. My goal here is to gather different basic conceptual approaches, from forum members, in order to help facilitate a starting point for the project.
    By the way I have seen on the Apex Latest Forum Poll, for quite sometime, where Document Management is an application that people would like to see developed. Can anyone from the Apex-team tell me if it is in the works and if so, when?
    Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions.
    Kyle

    Hey Chet,
    Thanks for the response; actually I had visited the sample package apps. site awhile back and did not realize more had been added. My problem is that I use Apex 2.1 and not 2.2, so unless there is a way to load the package apps. to the Oracle hosted site, I won't be able to review there design. It would be nice if Oracle tied these package apps. to their demonstration applications sample downloads function in Apex.
    As for storing each line of the document in a single record, this was thought of as an initial approach. A concern by the team was how to program the logic to identify specific changed text in say a 5 sentence paragraph and how large the table would become if recording it line by line.
    It is still a good approach to consider and we appreciate the input.
    Thanks
    Kyle

    So ...
    After a lot of searches, it was necessary a help from a Weblogic Administrator to find out what was going on with the installation process. The problem was with the memory allocation to the Weblogic VM. The process EMGC_OMS1 could not be started cos it was not possible to create a VM into SERVERADMIN.
    With just my DB experience I could not find any logs besides emctl.log and that one that it's shown in OEM Installler interface. The Weblogic Administrator was browsing the HOME where the Weblogic was installed and he found logs that showed the error telling where the problem was. Even downloading the OEM 12c 32bit, it was allocated memory to the java as if it was 64bit. The solution was decreasing the values of memory and clicking in Retry. So, my OEM Cloud Control 12c it's working now.

  • Installing codecs for mpeg-3 on Oracle Linux 6.4

    Hi,
    I am trying to install the required codecs for mpeg-3 on my Oracle 6.4 Linux box, with no success. I found the discussion from August 2011 Re: How to install media codecs in OL6 U1 on how to do this and have followed the instructions, (I had to substitute the fedora rpm for a more up to date one as the original is no longer available at that url). However, after doing this I am still unable to install mpg321. Do these instructions just need updating or is there something more fundamental wrong with my system?
    Best Regards and thanks in advance for any help

    Are you trying to play back video or only audio. Anyway, perhaps your best option is VLC VideoLan. It is also available from Repo(rpm)forge.
    So perhaps just try the following:
    yum install vlc
    It will install quite a bunch of libraries, inluding ffmpeg and lame, etc. from the OL6 and RPMforge repository.
    # yum info vlc
