Install SCSI HDD on Sparc 10 running Solaris 8

Hi. I'm trying to install a (secondary) 4.55 Gig Seagate hard disk drive on my box, using the included SCSI controller card. I've tried both self- and non-terminating but when I boot -r, it hangs for ages and the format command doesn't recognise the HDD. The LED on the disc is powered on continuously.

Can anyone help?Hi , you should set the target for this device. Usually by default
it has one configuration , but you should change until you detect
it.
You can do the next:
stop+A and intro in Openboot
then press :
probe-scsi
and you can see if your machine detects your device ( HDD ).
Usually , target 3 use the boot disk
target 6 for scsi cdrom
I've one Sparc20station and i know that the bootdisk must
be 4 .x Gigabytes ( max ), but yo're telling that it's secondary.
In my machine i've one 9 Gigabyt SCSI sca secondary.

This is more of a directory server question as it's the directory server failing to start and not the Messaging server.
But, if you do the following in the /lib directory what is the output?

  • Is it possible to make a DVD rom work on Sparc Ultra 5 running Solaris 2.6?

I have been asked to try and get a DVD drive to work on a sparc ultra 5 running Solaris 2.6.
Its been a while since I have done much with an ultra 5. My first reaction was no. However I thought that I should ask just in case it can be done.
Its got to be Solaris 2.6 because of other applications running on it. I believe that the DVD has been installed using an IDE cable.
Can anybody give me any advice?
    Thanks
    Phil

I have a vague recollection that the filesystem structure of DVD versus CD
(and perhaps its capacity differences... )
I said the recollection was vague...
are why the DVD optical media was not functional or usable.until Solaris 8.
    Try an experiment.
Put such a drive into the system, get a copy of CDRTOOLS for Solaris 2.6(SPARC)
and see if you can do anything with it.
Better yet, suggest to the system's owner that they go do it.
It'd be a learning experience for them.
I agree with Harold that Sol10 would be too much for that beastie.
The sweet spot was Solaris 7 or 8.
Edit: ... and give the Duke Stars to Harold.

  • Is there a way to run Windows programs on an Ultra SPARC 64-Bit Solaris 10?

I know the answer is more than likely going to be no, but I just thought I would ask...
I have an Sparc Ultra-60 running Solaris 10 64-Bit sitting here that is a web / forum / ftp server, and I would like to run a Telnet BBS program on it that is a Windows x86 based software.
I know WINE will run on OpenSolaris, but I don't know and I have searched high and low on the internet for the answer, so I came to the experts! :)
    Have a great weekend.!

    Hello Charles,
I have an Sparc Ultra-60 running Solaris 10 64-Bit sitting here that is a web / forum / ftp server, and I would like to run a Telnet BBS program on it that is a Windows x86 based software.
you might be able to get one of these SunPCi add-in boards. These are boards with thieir own CPU, memory, sound circuty and graphics chip (shared memory), later ones with network port but no own mass storage (the disk is emulated by a file on the Solaris filesystem). A full copy of the supported Windows operating system (the last generation supported Windows XP) is required (the installer depends on the layout of the retail copy). Depending on the ages/version of the board the CPU range from AMD K5 300/400 MHz, Celeron 600/700 to AMD K6 with over 1 GHz.
Unfortunately the first 2 generations (SunPCi and SunPCi II/Pro) don't directly support Solaris 10 (a file from the SunWSPCi package had to be modified to get the software installed) and the last generation SunPCi III/Pro requires a patch to work in 2010. The SunWSPCi packages that came with the boards are outdated and Oracle removed the packages from the download center.
The documentation for these boards is still available on docs.sun.com (enter the following in google "SunPCi +site:docs.sun.com").

Can certifiied Solaris v9 SPARC software run on Solaris v9 x86 OS? If not what is the benefit of using the x86 version of Solaris 9?

If you are asking will the binaries run, the short answer is no, the binaries are not compatible.
If you have src you should be able to compile and then install/run the software.

  • Sparc MO on Solaris 8 for intel

Is there any way possible to mount and read (readonly is fine) a scsi magneto optical drive that was written on a Sparc 5 for Solaris 8 loaded onto an intel *86 machine. i know there are issues with big and little endian and that there are ways to convert the big into little, but i have no access to a sparc machine to run the utiltity. Is there anything in Solaris (intel) that would be able to read the disk. As of now it can see the disk but thinks it is unformatted.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Need PCI SCSI controller for Sparc

I am perplexed at how difficult it is to get a Sparc-based PCI SCSI controller. I need help. If I search man section 7d of Solaris 9 I can find glm, isp, mpt, ncrs, and syshisl which appear to be drivers for PCI SCSI controllers on Sparc, but no idea of where to buy one (none of these are Adaptec, which I do know where to buy). If I search the Sun Store I can find part numbers for SCSI controllers but absolutely no description of them or which drivers they use. If I search the Sun documentation site I can find a few SCSI controllers mentioned but not referred to by the part numbers on the Sun store, so I still cannot get ordering info. When I search BigAdmin for driver support I find the pages dont tell me which architecture a driver is for. For example, I look up common Adaptec controllers and find drivers such as adp, cadp cadp160 but the web pages neglect to say they are for x86 only.
This is what I need- PCI SCSI controller for SunBlade 100 and SunFire V120, Ultra 2 (LVD).

"... the SSH is your friend..."
"... the SSH is your friend..."
"... the SSH is your friend..."
Go online to the Sun System Handbook. It's your resource for hardware information.
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub
You find the SB100 and the V120 in the list of EOL systems (both are discontinued models).
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/eolSystemList.html
For each computer, you can review the "Full Components List" link,
where there is a section that displays SCSI adapters,
including their part numbers and their sales option numbers.
You will be able to see that there was only one LVD card qualified
to function properly in the V120. You will also be able to see
that there weren't any LVD cards ever qualified in the SB100.
I anticipate the x6758a card will work fine in both, .
The SunBlade 100 desktop system is so old that it was already End-Of-Llife (EOL)
before Sun started to ship the SCSI card. Thus there was no reason
to go backwards and qualify the card to a disco'd platform.
If you do decide to purchase and install that card, be sure to read its manual carefully.
You will need to install separate driver software to the computers.
The QUS drivers ship with newly purchased x6758a cards, or can be downloaded from Sun.
    ... not difficult at all.

  • Boot problem for Ultra 60 running Solaris 9

I have a Sun Ultra 60 which, until the beginning of this month, was running Solaris 9 just fine. Following an emergency stop, the system refused to boot. At the ok prompt the boot command drew the response
Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk@0,0 file and args:
after which the system would hang, responding only to a mechanical power-off. The command boot -F failsafe gives the response
Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk@0,0 file and args -F failsafe
    Boot load failed
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable
after which the system returns the ok prompt without hanging, but without booting either. All OpenBoot (v. 3.23) test and diagnostic commands return normal responses.
Raising the diag-level to max, changing the diag-device to disk, and setting diag-switch? to true gets the same responses, with the following additional information:
Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk0,0 File and args -F failsafe
    Loading ufs-file-system package 1.4. 04 Aug 1995 13:02:54
    FCode UFS Reader 1.12 00/07/17 15:48:16
    Loading: /platform/SUNW, Ultra-60/failsafe
    Loading: /platform/sun4u/failsafe
    Boot load failed
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable
after which the system returns the ok prompt without booting.
Some fixes which do not work: I tried booting from CD, either the Solaris 9 software CDs or the Solaris 8 software CDs (obtained directly from Sun); these yield
    Redirected to slice: 1
    Loading: /platform/SUNW, Ultra-60/ufsboot
    Loading: /platform/sun4u/ufsboot
after which the system hangs (only mechanical shutoff works), or if the flag -F failsafe is used, the failsafe file is loaded, ``the file just loaded does not appear to be executable,'' and the system returns the ok prompt. I also tried making a bootable floppy disk by installing a bootblock, the ufsboot executable, and the kernel/unix executable from a working SunBlade 150 onto a floppy. The command boot floppy works as above, and can be forced to load the ufsboot file from the floppy, but ``the file just loaded does not appear to be executable''; the system returns the ok prompt without booting, but at least without hanging.
Presumably this is a bootblock problem, or an OpenBoot problem. But how can I restore a system (restore what?) which will not boot in the first place? Any advice is much appreciated.

Some additional information which may (or may not) shed light on this problem: If the system hangs with diag-switch? set to true, then powering off and back on becomes rather difficult. The power-on led on the front panel may flash for several minutes, with no display on the monitor. If there is no CD in the cdrom drive and no floppy in the floppy drive, the led goes off (the system is on--I can hear the hard drives spinning) for about a minute, after which the test lights on the SCSI peripherals light up, and the monitor comes on. It shows a long series of ``Probing ... '' lines which look normal, followed by the usual banner, followed by ``Resetting memory at ...,'' which runs through a series of addresses. This is followed by ``Power On Self Test Failed Cause: SIMM U0701,'' then the usual ok prompt. Then all the OpenBoot commands except boot appear to operate normally. So--
    1) Is this a hardware failure of one of the system's DIMM memory cards? Would that, in itself, account for the failure to boot, both from disk and from CD?
    2) If so, and replacing this card would solve the problem, is the required DIMM a generic item or a component specific to the Ultra 60?
    Any advice is much appreciated.

Should ai just install the db using scripts and run the neccessary .sql scripts instead of going through dbca?

This appears to be because of low semaphores setting. Did you reboot your server after making the /etc/system parameter changes ?

    Hi there,
How to install owb server-side software on UNIX Solaris (SPACR-64)?
    I've read the install guide
    and it mentions
    3. Start the installer by entering the following at the prompt:
    cd mount_point
    ./runInstaller
I don't have access to any graphical interface on the UNIX box e.g. x-windows nor any cd with the software, just the solaris software downloaded from web - does this include the runinstaller
and is the runisnatller just a command line interface?
I hoped I would be able to download the software from oracle website and then simply run the a setup scrip?
Is it possible to do this? Would I simply substitute cd mount_point to cd <directory I put software)
I've never ran oracle universall installer on UNIX before.
    Many Thanks

    Hi,
You can install the server-side software from the downloaded software.
    You don't need the CD
You do need an X-windows client on your computer to connect to the server OR work directly on the server.
Without X-windows you cannot start the Oracle Universal Installer.
Maybe there is a command line installation, I have never used this.
    I hope this helps.
