Install Second Hard Drive On HP Pavilion DV7-4270us Laptop

Hi,
My laptop has a space for a second hard drive but no connectors. I am using Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and would like to add a second drive in that slot. My main drive is 1TB and I am running out of room. Currently I am using a 1TB external but it is cumbersome when traveling. What must I do to use the second drive?
TIA,
Marty

  • Problems installing second hard drive in HP Pavilion M7-1015dx laptop.

I just bought a new HP Pavilion M7-1015dx. I have successfully installed an SSD drive as the primary hard drive and now I want to use the 1tb hard drive that the computer came with as data and install it in the second hard drive bay. I have a cable that I used from my old HP DV7 when I had a second hard drive but I am having issues with my M7-1015dx laptop.
When I plug the sata cable into the second connector on the laptop and attach my hard drive (I have tried several hard drives) and go to power the laptop on, the power light just blinks a few times. Now I know there is something wrong for I just purchased the laptop two days ago... I got the idea to try the cable that I used to plug into the second connect to check and see if I plugged it into the first and I got the same issue, power light blinking. So I am wondering if it is the cable... is this possible? Are there different rated sata cables? I also tried the cable the came with my new laptop to make sure that it just wasn't the second port - I tried plugging it in to the second port with a hard drive attached and the laptop this time turned on but asked for a bootable disk because it requires boot disk to be in the 1st hard drive bay connection which I knew. I just want to give all the information so that I can get this fixed.
    Please help me

    Hey Brother-Brad,
I'm sorry you're running into issues installing a second hard drive. Your issue may not be the cable. Do you have a working hard drive installed currently with Window on it?
    If so,
    1. In Windows, Click the Start button.
    2. Type 'hard disk'
    3. Click on 'Create and format hard disk partitions' (aka Disk Management)
    4. Look at Disk 0 listed at the bottom in the middle. Does it say Basic or Dynamic?
    5. If it says Basic, right-click it and select Convert to Dynamic.
Hard drives must be set as Dynamic for dual hard drives to be recognized.
Let me know the results when you get a chance

  • How to add a 2nd hard drive to HP Pavilion DV7!

How to add a 2nd hard drive to HP Pavilion DV7-3165DX, product # WA794UA or WA794UAR.
    (1) Order HDD, hard drive, hardware kit. HDD hardware kit includes mounting rails, static shield, screws, rubber isolators, and SATA to motherboard cable. Check your model & Product # for compatibility.
         HP Parts HDD hardware kit 517639-001 for DV7-3165DX product# WA794UA and WA794UAR.
    (2) Consult Drives - Windows 7 PDF, table of contents, 7 Replacing a drive in the secondary hard drive bay. This will show you how to install a 2nd HDD in a HP DV7.
          Drives - Windows 7 PDF
    (3) In Windows 7 select Computer, Select the HDD installed, Format (if not already formatted).
    (4) If HDD does not show up in Windows 7 under Computer, go to Start (Menu), Search Programs and Files, enter "Computer Management", select Storage, Disk Management (Local), look for the Bay 2 HDD (should show up as Disc 1, Bay 1 HDD should show as Disc 0), Format the 2nd HDD (The one you just installed).
Update: I have the 2nd HDD (WD 1TB) installed, Windows now recognises it after completing the steps I mentioned in step 4, Format with default allocation NTFS 931.51GB free, 118MB used for formatting. Format with default allocation exFAT 931.51GB free, 1MB used for formatting. I selected NTFS format to reduce file fragmenting.

When i added my 2nd HDD I was ready to get it ordered and shipped, so it would arrive before I arrived home. I also was not sure if it would be offered anywhere else and be 100% compatible. The quality of the factory HP part is good. Since then I found a cheeper source. Newmodeus DV7-3xxx Hard Drive Caddy $27.95 +tax +shipping. Not sure if the quality is the same. If this helps you, post your results and kudos.

    Hi,
You need two cables, one is a sata cable:
    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/30305659/706331346/StarTech-com-6in-SATA-to-Right-Angle-SATA-Serial-AT...
This cable is only for data and connects the hdd to the SATA connector on the motherboard.
The other cable is for power:
    http://www.itpartsdirect.com/startech-15-24cm-4-pin-molex-to-sata-power-cable-adaptor.html
This connects the hdd to the PSU.
You can also buy a combo cable like this:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00064GBT4/?tag=hydra0b-21&hvadid=9550951989&ref=asc_df_B00064GBT4
All you have to do now is to connect the hdd and that's it. Make sure that the primary drive with the operating system is connected to the primary SATA connector (I think there are numbers 1, 2, 3..)

  • Question - Need Advice Regarding Second Hard Drive On HP Pavilion dv7t-4100 Notebook PC

    Hi,
I currently have a HP Pavilion dv7t-4100 Notebook PC, and my hard drive failed (luckily while still under warranty!).  So I contacted HP support and they are in the process of sending me a replacement hard drive, so that I may install it.  When I opened the back of the notebook, I realized that a second hard drive could be installed, if desired.  I would be interested in doing this!  My current primary drive was (and will be again) a Toshiba 1 TB Internal hard drive Serial ATA-300 2.5" 5400 rpm, model MK1059GSM.  I understand (from reading a previous post) that for the second hard drive, I will need to purchase  a "2nd HDD Caddy & Cable for HP dv7-4000, dv7-5000, dv7t SE" (the purchase link the tech in the other post referred to was http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=345); and now I need to decide on the size (and other stats) of the hard drive that I will buy to install and used as the secondary drive.  The HP customer service rep I spoke with on the phone about my primary drive replacement said that it is usually recommended to not go any higher (in capacity) than the primary drive, for the second drive, to ensure a more "stable" system (but I am not sure about the level of"technical" knowledge he has about the inner workings of the notebooks).  However, from my upgrading experiences with desktop PCs, I was usually able to go as high in capacity as I could/desired; as long as the physical size of the drive was the same, and it was compatible with my system.  And I usually did choose to go with a larger capacity second drive, as this was where most of my data and media files were stored (with the primary being used for mostly operating system and system files).  This is my first time "upgrading" a Notebook, so I wanted to check with the techs here on the board- would it be a problem for me to go with a secondary drive larger than my primary drive's 1TB capacity?  Also, are there any other factors to consider and keep in mind when selecting a second hard drive?  Any advice and replies will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks so much for your help with this!  -Brian

You should be able to go as high as 2TB.
I also own a,(Older), DV7 notebook which has dual drive capability.
I bought my caddy from the place recommended and got everything needed including screws !
I matched the capacity in mine with an exact same hard drive and have never had a problem.
Minor battery life noticable but that was it.
Your system BIOS is what will hold you back from say a 3TB drive.
You can go to HP site and check the specs on your model and find out for 100 % sure.
HP Support & Drivers | United States
I would recommend doing what I did and match the drive exactly.
    Good day !

I am looking at putting a second hard drive into my HP Pavilion dv-7 3157 ca, I know the first hard drive has a maximum size of 500 GB, but as for the second drive can it be 1 TB or is the total of both hard drive 1TB ie: 2x500 GB?

  • Can I install second hard drive on PC?

Hi. I just wondered whether I can install a second hard drive on my PC.
The present Sata hard drive has 640 GB capacity.
If there is a spare port for a second hard drive, is there a maximum capcity limit?
And would any make of Sata 3.5" hard drive be suitable? I would be grateful for any advice.

  • Add a Second Hard Drive to a Pavilion 500-314 Desktop

I have just purchased a Pavilion 500-314 desktop and desire to add a second SATA hard drive from the computer it is replacing.  When I open the case I find four SATA connections but nowhere to physically mount the second hard drive.  The drive bay is large and basically empty with the included hard drive mounted to the drive bay cage.  There are no slots for additional drives.  When I called HP I was told this chassis supports only one drive even though it has four SATA connectors on the motherboard.  Is there an adapter that can be purchased to create additional slots or am I out of luck with additional internal drives?

  • Problems installing second hard drive and second DVD recorder

I have tried about every combination of tricks to install a second hard drive.  I want to add a 250GB, WD IDE hard drive to my 3000J 115 7387A32 on the IDE channel.  I have set up the bios then added the drive and the reverse but cannot get computer to boot in either case.  It locks on the first screen where is says hit Enter to.... Enter makes the text go away, but nothing after. I am trying to install it as a single drive on the secondary IDE channel.
I know the HD is good as I removed it from another computer.  It does have Win XP on it.  I will format it using Vista IF I can get it installed.
Basically, I am having the same problems within stalling the second DVD, which is SATA.

Your initial hard drive should be jumpered as Master. When you install a second hard drive it must be jumpered Slave. There should be a diagram on the case of the HD showing the jumper locations.

  • Possible to install second hard drive in Pavillion p6110f

Is it possible to install a second hard drive, 1TB Seagate, into the expansion slot on my Pavillion p6110f??

    Hi,
Your PC has a hard drive cage that will accomodate two drives.  This HP How-to document starting at Removing a Drive a hard drive will show you the process for removing the hard drive cage.
If you still want to use the Expansion Bay then you will need a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter bracket. NewEgg.com would carry such a bracket.  You will also need a SATA data cable.  This HP How-to article will give you an idea on how to use the Expansion Bay for a 5.25" device.  Check up by the existing optical drinve for a spare SATA power connector.  If one is not available then you will need to use a SATA power splitter.

  • Second hard drive in a Pavilion 500-300t

I just bought a Pavilion 500-300t PC through the EPP program.  I want to install a second SATA hard drive in it, but I can't figure out how or where to mount the second drive.  As far as I can tell, there isn't a bay or rack for mounting an additional drive.  The primary drive is secured the PC frame.  Do I need to buy a separate rack and if so, which one?
Thanks in advance.  Retired HP employee

    Hi,
It's a special model probably only designed for EPP users. But for many Pavilion 500-300 series, no room to add the second HDD and the specs only says very simple:
    Form factor: Microtower
    Internal drive bays: One occupied
    External drive bays: One occupied
    Source:  http://m.hp.com/uk/en/products/desktops/product-detail.do?oid=6879020
    And not many manuals around:

  • How to install second hard drive in Satellite A200-1BW?

I see my new Satellite A200-1BW has two hard drive bays,on looking into the second bay I cannot see how a second drive can be fitted as the plug in socket appears to be missing.
What parts do i need to fit to fit a second drive as they are held in stock by my local computer outlet and are quite cheap, can anybody advise me on part numbers etc of the bits I need.
    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi,
there are many different models of your machine on the market and some of them have a second drive, some of them not. If you bought a model with one drive then you will only be able to install ONE drive because your model was only intended to have one drive.
And even if you solder a connector to it or attach it in any other way then you dont know if the bios supports the second drive.
My suggestion on it: obtain a USB-HDD and store your data on that drive. Would be making more sense then spending a lot of time on investigation to find out that your mainboard is not able to handle a second drive.
    Cheers

  • Installing second hard drive - boot problem

I have a Maxtor SATA hard drive that I had installed in my G5. It is use only for client project files - no operating system or programs have ever been installed on this drive. It worked great in my G5. I recently upgraded to an Intel Mac Pro and so I pulled the drive and installed it. With the drive installed it won't even boot. All it does is keep repeating the start-up chime. I tried it in several of the open bays and it did the same thing every time. When I pull it back out, it boots without a problem and when I put it back in the G5 it is recognized without a problem. Any thoughts of what could be the problem and solution? I really need to get this back, as I mentioned it contains all my client projects.
    Thanks.

Disk Utility - Erase (drive, not volume) and make sure it is now GPT/GUID and not old Apple Partition Table format.
Even though it is data only, there can and are some problems (the older it was last formatted the more so perhaps).
Just pull the data off if needed. Handy to have a FW drive case for SATA laying around.
Migrating OS and apps from G5 to Intel is full of potential pitfalls.
Depending on the drive age, size, performance, I'd probably go for a WD Caviar 640GB $75 to transfer files onto, and then wipe the Maxtor and use it for an emergency backup drive off which you can run Disk Warrior and such.
