Install second optical drive mac pro

Although there are several support documents available from Apple on how to replace the hard drive and replace the optical drive in a Mac Pro, I could not locate a pdf on how to install a second optical drive. In this case, I wanted to add a Blu-Ray recorder to my mid-2010 Mac Pro. I found what I was looking for on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHjuKL2BS4Y This is a video by the reputable OWC (One World Computing) and its very easy to follow.

Never mind

  • Installing second optical drive and the door hangs

This is just an FYI post, have not been able to find anyone else with the exact same problem, but thought I would list in the event of.
I originally installed an internal DVD R/RW Lightscribe drive from LaCie in a Power Mac G4 Dual 1Gig and it worked well! I have since purchased a MacPro and wanted to move the Lightscribe drive into the second optical drive bay. So after installing the drive and attempting to open the tray it was apparent that the door on the case would not allow the tray to open. The front of the Lightscribe tray was too bulky to fit through the opening on the narrower Mac Pro optical drive door.
Well, the folks at Lacie had attached a nameplate to the front of the tray that works fine in other configurations, but on the MacPro the clearance for the tray is narrower and it's bulk would not activate the sliding door properly.
Someone was thinking, because the tray nameplate is detachable with a little effort. I can provide photos if need be.
Tray closes as it should now.

    Hi TCherry,
Your situation interests me since I was thinking of doing the same with a previous optical drive from an old G4. I also wanted to add it to my MacPro's 2nd slot.
Are you still willing to supply some pics to see what you did?
    Rio.

  • Installing a second optical drive....problem!

I've installed a second optical drive in my Mac Pro and when I go to system profiler it is not seeing any of the drives! The original one will show if I disconnect the new one.
    Any advice please?

    Hi,
make sure that the second optical is jumpered (somewhere on the back) to 'Cable-Select', not 'Master' nor 'Slave'.
There must be a sticker on the top of the drive showing you how to change the jumper.
Most Optical drives in the market nowadays come with the jumper set to 'Master'.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Confused about Install procedure on new Mac Pro

With 10.4 on my old G4 I would put the DVD in, hit install and the machine would restart. The installer could come up and I could select the disk utility and do a repair disk and disk permissions from the install disk before my actual install. With my Mac Pro, when I hit install from the disk it goes right into the installation process. I began that process thinking it would first restart the machine and give me a choice to access the disc utility first, but it looked like it was going straight to install. So I stopped the dang thing quickly. Now I've got this .DS_Store icon on my desktop that won't go away. A few questions...
    1. How do I get to Disc Utility on the boot DVD and do maintenance?
    2. How do I get rid of the dang .DS_Store icon on my desktop?
    3. I'm experiencing quirky behavior on my Mac Pro, like jitters in Mail sometimes when I just open and start to scroll through notes in my inbox, slow opening of windows, etc., and my pointer suddenly going from the center of the screen to up to the top of the screen for no apparent reason. What is the best recommended repair and maintenance third-party utility for 10.6.3 Snow Leopard, to keep my Mac running optimally? I used to use SOCKS and Tech Tool Pro for 10.4.
Thank you so much for any help you can give me.
    Leonard

    Arch,
Every time I open Mail all the mail messages jitter for about 2 seconds, and my pointer, several times during the day, will jump up from, say, the middle of the screen to the top of the screen and I have to move it down. Odd. But it doesn't seem to be affected by how long I'm on the machine, or whether I just turn it on or whatever. Completely random. Plus, sometimes other drives won't open quickly... I mean I have another SATA drive that when I click on it, it won't open for about 6 or 7 seconds. The drive IS about 2 years old, it could be the drive, but it opened quickly on my old machine. That seems odd for a supposed speed demon like the Mac Pro. So I just wanted to run the Disk Utility from the install disk to try and see if that would stop these small issues. I brought a couple of apps over from my old machine. Photoshop CS and InDesign CS. I realize they aren't running optimum, and the new versions are native. But I can't afford them right now and I had several people tell me they will work, just slower. Is it just wrong to use them at all? These people are having no problems with them like I'm having. I did not use Migration Assistant. I'm using the mouse that came with my computer, with the scroll button top forward center. Yes, my only desire was to use the install disk to repair the disk as I thought a damaged disk would not repair itself as well as the install disk would. Would just a basic install work and get rid of these ghost icons?
    Thanks again for your help,
    Leonard

  • System wont recognize my second optical drive

At times my system will not recognize my second optical drive which is a pioneer blue ray.  When I reboot sometimes the drive is reconized and sometimes not.  When it is reconized after being on extented time it will sometime disappear.

I have the same issue with my. Mac Pro.  It will not (at times) recognize my Pioneer blue ray drive.  Random although more often as of late.

I have a BT Infinity router plugged into the Time Capsule, not sure where the radio settings are?
They are able to use the network settings of the TC i.e. they can connect to the internet via the wifi through the TC but when they try and connect to the AirPort Disk this is where it is not allowing a connection.
I don;t have the drive shared out at all at the moment, is this necessary?  How do I do this if so?
I have attached the screen shots of all the settings.

    Hi,
You need two cables, one is a sata cable:
    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/30305659/706331346/StarTech-com-6in-SATA-to-Right-Angle-SATA-Serial-AT...
This cable is only for data and connects the hdd to the SATA connector on the motherboard.
The other cable is for power:
    http://www.itpartsdirect.com/startech-15-24cm-4-pin-molex-to-sata-power-cable-adaptor.html
This connects the hdd to the PSU.
You can also buy a combo cable like this:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00064GBT4/?tag=hydra0b-21&hvadid=9550951989&ref=asc_df_B00064GBT4
All you have to do now is to connect the hdd and that's it. Make sure that the primary drive with the operating system is connected to the primary SATA connector (I think there are numbers 1, 2, 3..)

    Hi fremley,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This article may be helpful with determining why your Mac Pro doesn't stay in sleep mode:
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:
Hard drive access (even if you're not using the computer, a running application might be accessing your drive, such as when downloading a large file or listening to music in iTunes)
Moving the mouse or using a portable Mac's trackpad, pressing a mouse button, or pressing a key on the keyboard
Some System Preferences settings (see below)
    Open applications (see below)
    Input devices (see below)
    Expansion cards (see below)
Additional drives, such as USB, FireWire, DVD, or CD drives (see below)

  • Installing Leopard on a Mac Pro

As I am a bit of a scaredy cat, I have put off installing Leopard on my Mac Pro. This is a work machine and although I have another G5 that is perfectly usable if this machine went belly up I have still not bit the bullet so to speak... until now.
I'd like to install Leopard and wanted to do what I usually do which is a complete erase and install rather than the standard migration. I have always had problems with this and so this is my preferred route. Since the Mac Pro comes with 3 extra bays in which to put hard discs, am I able to put in a new drive start up the mac from a Leopard install disc and install Leopard on this drive. Or does it always install to the drive in bay one. My ideal set up would be to have both operating systems and install all the apps I use on Leopard in a methodical way, testing as I go along. This was how I migrated from Panther and I am happy to do this although it does take a little longer.
Another solution is to do a migration as well I guess to see how this would go. Can a migration be done from the internal drive in bay one or would I be better off Carbon Copy Cloning my Tiger disc to an external drive and using this instead. Since the drives are so easy to swap in and out I figured this is an option, but don't know.
The only other thing is I use the new Adobe CS3 apps which require internet enabling. I can have 2 versions of say After Effects at a time on 2 different macs. I can install on a third but have to disable one on one of the others. If I have AE installed on both Leopard and Tiger on the same machine does this mean I have to disable it in Tiger before I switch to the other Leopard install. Confusing isn't it.
Anyway hope some of you more technical people out there can help with some of these questions
    all the best
    Rich

The drive bay doesn't matter. You can install onto any drive,

You can use Migration Assistant to migrate from internal drives. It is safest to just migrate data, not applications. Install the latest versions on the applications.

It depends on how Adobe does it. If they just look at the hardware configuration, you could activate the new copy without affecting the old one. If they look at the version of OSX, or the disk drive, you may have to deactivate the one you aren't using before it will let you activate the other.

After installed win7 on my mac pro(mid 2012/mountain lion), I can not connect internet and where can i find drivers in mountain lion system.
I donot think I have a install disk when I bought my mac, there is only a disc partition for recovery system.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You have to install Boot Camp drivers. On Mountain Lion, you have to download them.
First, press X key while your Mac is starting to start into OS X. Then, open Boot Camp Assistant and select the option to download the drivers. You will have to burn them into a DVD or USB drive, so after downloading them, restart and install them into Windows

  • Can i install gtx titan on mac pro*

can i install gtx titan on mac pro* help please
    Thanks

    that card does not have:
    • EFI firmware to show a picture under Mac OS X
    • at most two 6-pin aux power cables (the card has one 6 and one 8-pin, and requires BOTH which the Mac Pro cannot accomodate)
Without substantial modification it will not work under Mac OS X.

  • Have a student / teacher subscription. Trying to download and install applications on new mac pro with yosemite

Have a student / teacher subscription. Trying to download and install applications on new mac pro with yosemite. Old applications still work on older Mac Pro. Can't download any applications. Creative Cloud website and desktop app both fail. Very frustrating. Anyone having this problem?

Chas50 I would recommend removing the currently installed Adobe Creative software.  You can then install the new versions of the Adobe Creative software included with your membership.  You can find complete details regarding the uninstall and install process at Install and update apps - https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/install-apps.html.
