Install Snow Leopard on clean HD

So I'm fixing a macbook and i'm trying to re-install Snow Leapard onto the Hard Drive. I've put the hard drive in and held the "C" key down while turning the computer on and all I get is a flashing folder with a question mark. I'm guessing that means the system can't find the software on the computer. Is there anyway I can install the system without a firewire or sled to dock the drive?

Not sure what you are doing.
Drive Preparation and Snow Leopard Installation
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. After formatting is completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

  • Installing Snow Leopard on "clean" Mac

    Hey.
I'm new to mac, I bought my Macbook Pro in late Aug 2009.
I have the "normal" Leopard witch was installed when I bought the mac.
I have been using PC for 15 yrs soo I'm not really familiar to how thing works in Mac so I hope someone out there can help me.
I have bought the 9 Euro upgrade dvd for Snow Leopard and I'm planning to upgrade my mac from Leopard to Snow Leopard (heard it was fast). The thing is, does it "just" upgrade the Leopard to Snow Leopard or does it make a "clean" installation (PC terms) witch erase the Leopard and all my files and then install the Snow Leopard?
I wish to have a completely clean installation on Mac Snow Leopard, is this possible with the 9 Euro Upgrade DVD?
    Please help me!

You can, but probably not by the method mentioned by Barney, if by the "9 Euro" DVD you mean a disc you got via the Snow Leopard Up-To-Date program. I am not certain about this, but it is likely that these discs will only allow you to update an existing installation of Leopard to Snow Leopard.
So, to do a clean install in this case, you would first restore your Mac to out-of-the-box state with the original Leopard discs that came with it, then use your up-to-date disc to upgrade that to Snow Leopard.

  • I want to save important files/programs on an external hard drive, delete EVERYTHING on my computer, install snow leopard, and reload everything i saved on to a clean slate. Is this possible/practical?

I was just thinking that it would be better to wipe the entire hard drive clean and reinstall some programs rather than go through and move certain things to the trash. Basically rebuild my software and file collection from the ground up, omitting what is unnecessary. Then again, I have no idea what i'm doing.
My macbook was purchased in late 2008. 2gb RAM. OS X 10.5.6.  It's been going very slow lately so i decided i would look up how to improve. Snow leopard was recommended as well as changing my RAM. And so here I am.
I don't have an external hard drive so i was going to just compress all my files and save them to my emac via ethernet. would they be harmed?
also, i have alot of projects in ableton (a music recording/writing program). Would saving and transferring them be just as simple as finding the song? or are other components of a certain song saved in other locations?
sorry this is so lengthy. i should probably stick with something simple but i just want things to run as smoothly as possible for as long as possible
    thanks very much

Installing Snow Leopard: What you need to know
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1142454/install_snow_leopard.html.
You should get a Firewire connected hard drive and backup your MB's HD to it. That way, if something goes wrong during the installation, you can recover your current sytem, apps and files. After the SL install, you can use the external HD for frequent backups.

  • Clean install Snow Leopard

I have a 2006 24'' iMac. It now has serious graphic issues and is not usable at all. I understand this is a known issue witht this model and that it has something to do with overheating and CPU/videocard malfunction. I have tried different OSX versions, but there are problems with all of them.
I do not use this iMac anymore, and i am selling it to guy as a "defect computer" (he is fully aware of that the iMac is non functional).
The iMac has now Lion installed on it. The one I am selling it to, has asked me to install Snow Leopard from a retail DVD I have used on this iMac earlier before shipping the machine.
I have done clean installation of different OSX versions many times before, and this is not a problem.
BUT: How can I do this installation of Snow Leopard without doing the final setup of the OS. I would like that when my buyer start up the iMac, he gets the "Welcome" screen where he sets up an admin account on the computer.
Remember I have to be able to eject the SL DVD for shipping the iMac.

What the buyer is instructing you to do is incorrect and violates Apple's license.
To correctly sell or transfer ownership of a Mac, even to someone in your family, you should follow these instructions.
Disregard anything you are unable to accomplish. For example, Step 6 does not apply because your Mac shipped with discs. The buyer will need those discs. If you no longer have them, replacements can be obtained from Apple for a nominal fee.
Refer to What to do before selling or giving away your Mac
If you enabled FileVault, disable it in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
"Deauthorize" your iTunes account. Same for Audible if you have one.
System Preferences > iCloud > de-select "Back to My Mac" and "Find my Mac".
Sign out of iCloud. Select "Delete from Mac" when it appears.
Next: Remove all your personal information by completely erasing the Mac's internal storage.
If your Mac shipped with a grey System Install DVD, start your Mac with that disc inserted in the optical drive while holding the c key to boot from it instead of its internal volume, which should be erased before selling it.
If your Mac did not ship with discs, boot OS X Internet Recovery:
using three fingers press and hold the following keys: ⌘(command), option, and R.
With a fourth finger press the power button to turn on the Mac.
Keep the other three fingers where they are until you see the "spinning globe" icon.
This method forces the Mac to download its originally installed OS from Apple's servers, which will not require an Apple ID to install.
Remove any Open Firmware password if you created one: select Firmware Password Utility from the Utilities menu and remove it.
Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Remove any partitions you may have created.
Select the Mac's hard disk icon, then select the "Erase" tab.
Select the "Security Options" button and erase the disk.
The more "securely" you erase the disk, the longer it will take.
The fastest method is sufficient since all but the most expensive techniques and equipment will be able to recover securely erased data.
When it finishes, quit Disk Utility.
Select Install Mac OS X from the Utilities menu.
An Apple ID will not be required. If a prompt for an Apple ID appears, return to Step 5.
Do not create any user accounts.
When it finishes, shut down the computer.
If you want to install the bundled apps that were included with your Mac, restart by using your Applications DVD if one was included, and install the bundled apps. Apps bundled with newer Macs that shipped without discs cannot be transferred. Its new owner must purchase them from the Mac App Store using his or her own Apple ID.
If the Mac is being sold to someone outside the family consider the following additional information:
System Install DVDs that came with your Mac should remain with it forever, and must be included with the sale.
Consider including your AppleCare certificate if you bought it, printed documentation, even the box if you still have it. AppleCare stays with the equipment and is transferable.
Execute a bill of sale showing the Mac's serial number.
Once no longer in your possession, remove the Mac from your devices in My Support Profile.

  • "Clean Install" Snow Leopard on Tiger using 30 eur DVD. Legal or not?

    Hi!
    I have two questions:
1). Is it possible to use the "cheap" 30 euro DVD to "clean install" Snow Leopard on 5yrs old MacBook running Tiger?
By "clean install" I mean to erase the hard drive and then install the new operating system (Snow Leopard).
I have read that is possible technically but is it legal?
2). Is "Clean Install" and "Upgrading" similar or different from a legal point of view?
A clean install is when you erase your hard drive and then install the operating system. An upgrade is when you just overwrite the operating system and keep other files in place.
    Thanks,
    D.M.

    1. Yes.
    2. They are different.  The former requires first erasing the drive while the latter upgrades an existing system.

  • Clean Install Snow Leopard/FCP

    Hello,
I just replaced my internal hard drive on my Mac Pro, initialized it, installed Snow Leopard and now am about to install FCP7 upgrade.  Do I need to install FCP6 first and then the FCP7 upgrade??  Any help would be AWESOME!

No, you install FCS 3 only. Early in the installation process, you will be asked to provide your FCS 3 serial. The program will recognize it as an upgrade number and will request your original full install serial number. Enter that, and life is good.

  • Can't install Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro - DVD won't mount

I am unable to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro as the DVD won't mount.  This is an early 2008 vintage MacBook Pro, intel core duo...
I'm using a OS X Snow Leopard install DVD (family licensed).  This DVD has been used to install 3 other Macs in my house without a problem (about a year ago), but cannot be used to upgrade my MBP.  Actually, this disk mounted on the MBP exactly once - inserted with system up, the disk mounted.  Upon running the installed (a year ago), the computer restarted but hung in boot.  After getting the disk ejected and the computer restarted, the disk would never mount again.  I've defered upgrade for a year but at this point need to upgrade my MBP at least to Snow Leopard and possibly Lion.
The problem doesn't seem to be with the DVD, since it continues to mount fine in other computers, and in fact a borrowed Snow Leopard DVD also will not mount on the MBP.
BUT ... the problem also does not seem to be with the optical drive in my computer, as it can read & mount the install/restore disks that came with the computer as well as other CDs and DVD ROMs.  Only the Snow Leopard install DVDs fail to mount.
I've also tried mounting the 10.6 install DVD on my Mac Pro desktop, making it available over the network (ethernet) with DVD/CD sharing.  I can mount the remote disk from my MBP that way, but when I launch the installer, the application launches (its own menus are displayed, I can quit from menu, for example) but does nothing -- no windows open, nothing.
I've also tried "Remote Install" (again with the DVD made available with the Remote Install MacOS X application on my desktop), but when I boot the MBP with option held down, the remote disk is not available as a startup disk.
Zapping the PRAM did not help.
Am off to the store to get an optical drive cleaning kit and a blank DVD big enough to burn a new disk image, but would appreciate any further ideas at this point....

Solution that worked: Copy the Install DVD to a USB flash drive and boot from that.

Up and running with Snow Leopard now and working on the updates.

  • Re-installing Snow Leopard

My computer's been giving me a series of problems (repeatedly unsuccessful software updates, irregular/now non-existent iphone sync, issues with VMware, etc) so I now want to re-install Snow Leopard and start fresh. I've been using Time Machine to back up my files and applications on an external hard drive.
If I re-install Snow Leopard from the boot disc and choose to not restore from Time Machine backup (i.e., just install a clean copy of OS X), will I still be able to retrieve my files from time machine onto the newly installed OS? I've already tried the "restore from Time Machine" option (from a backup well before the problems arose) and that didn't resolve the issues I was having so I don't want to just restore and have the same problems come up again. Any thoughts?? thanks!

    kezeench wrote:
... I'd have to go through my time machine backup drive and select folders one at a time to restore (music, applications, etc)?
yes. if you want to bypass either +setup assistant+ or +migration assistant+, that's the way to go.
however, it is not recommendable to migrate applications that way. especially apps that come by way of an installer put files in various locations of your HD. unless you know exactly where those files are, you are better off reinstalling apps the usual way.
in fact, what i would do is this:
once the new OS is installed, i would migrate account(s), network settings, and documents using the setup assistant. then i would reinstall apps manually.
i did this not too long ago when i migrated from my old powerbook G4 to my new mini. since i migrated everything but apps, the pref files for the applications came over and i didn't even have to re-enter serial numbers.

  • Can't erase and install SNow Leopard on old MacBook Pro

I am trying to erase and install Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro3,1. I boot up with the installation disc, get to pick a language but then a window pops up that says "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer" and gives me the options to Restore from Backup or Restart.
I had upgraded to a 500GB hard drive on this machine which I used for months, but it is currently running off the hard drive of a new MacBook Pro that got fried. The installation disk I am using is the one I got with that unfortunate machine. Could this be the problem?
    Any other suggestions?
    Other info: Mac OS X 10.6.1 (108504)
Other History: The machine I am trying to erase and install on recently had its logic board replaced under warranty because of the NVIDIA graphics card issue. I have not found the service centre in South Africa to be very trustworthy, in fact the first time they claimed to have replaced the logic board, the computer (which had been intermittently failing to boot up) immediately started displaying the same problems. Another mac shop said to me that the "new" logic board looked so dusty that it seemed extremely unlikely that it had been replaced a week prior. Anyway, it has ostensibly been replaced again, along with a faulty superdrive.
When it went back to the service centre, they put in the hard drive of another, new, MacBook Pro of mine that got fried in an unrelated incident
Please help! I want to give this machine to an employee but
    a) want to make sure it's stable and functioning properly, and
    b) want to give it a clean slate with my personal data and settings erased.

You need a retail Snow Leopard installation disk. Available for $29 USD. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MACOS_XSNGL
Once you install it onto the old machine, you can use the setup assistant to migrate your stuff and apps from the other machine.

  • Help! Lion has basically paralyzed my system. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to open a folder, to open Applications, Safari freezes and won't let me sign into the forums (I'm on a different computer). I tried to re-install Snow Leopard, but no go!

Basics - 2008 iMac, 2.8 Ghz, 4 Gig RAM, 500 Gig HDD with over 100 Gig free. DId Disk Utility verification and files-disk are fine. Programs will run, but any filing just stops everything (spinning beach ball). I've managed to back up some major content to an external HD, and hopefully, despite the inordinate amount of time it takes, I'll be able to off-load more. But how do I get Lion to work or, alternatively, other than completely erasing the HD, how do I re-install Snow Leopard?

Your upgrade must have failed.  Unless you very very recently upgraded Lion, as in the last hour or two.  Then you need to go to System Preferences and Energy Saver and stop it from automatically sleeping.  Let it sit overnight.  It could be spotlight re-indexing your disk and slowing you way way down.
If that doesn't work then you can re-install Lion cleanly.  You need to finish backing up your data.  Then make a Lion USB flash boot disk or DVD.  Hold option key when you boot and select the USB or DVD drive.  Run Disk Utility and delete then recreate the partition, exit Disk Utility and install Lion.  Then restore your applications and data.

  • Can't install snow leopard on partition after upgrading to lion

I rushed out too early to install Lion via Apple Apps store.  Now, I realize that Rosetta is gone and so are my options to use older apps.  As I was reading on the web and Apple Support, I have tried various things and get a window saying that I can't install snow leopard.
I have never partition my hard drive, but using disk utility I created a partition called "Snow Leopard."  It divided my HD in half which is okay.  I closed the disk utility window, rebooted holding down the "C" key, and saw the OS X Install DVD.  When I select it a window pops up saying, "You can't use this version of the appl inst Mac OS X with this version of Mac OS X.  You have installed Mac OS X 23.1.1."
Before downloading lion, I made a backup of my existing HD using Time Machine to an external HD.  When I open up a saved version dated a month ago, I see that the applications that were working in snow leopard now have the icon circle saying that it is not supported by lion.  This is strange since I used Time Machine to back up my HD, then turned off the app before downloading lion.  Even older versions saved on the external HD show the circle.
I read about lion and the "Recovery HD," but when I hold down the Command-R key nothing happens when I restart my computer.  It also talks about using the option key but that does not work.  It talks about reinstalling lion using this system, but I don't see it working.
How can I install snow leopard on my new partition, then I would go to "Software Updates," to get the latest version, or use one of the versions on my external HD to have both operating system.
    Thanks,
    DaisyMay

    Hi Scottiemn,
As I was trying different things to make a partition on my HD, I made notes as to what I did, and I finally got it to work.  I will try to explain what I did.
Before installing “Lion,” I backed up Snow Leopard using Time Machine to my external Seagate HD.  I installed “Lion,” and found out that I could not use some of my old apps, so I did the following.
Since I am running “Lion,” I opened up disk utility and selected my MacHD (1TB), then I selected partition, and it showed “Macintosh HD” under the partition information name.  I believe I selected the plus, + and it divided my HD space in half, and I named it Snow Leopard.
I then installed the Snow Leopard DVD, and restarted my computer holding down the “C” key, I held it down for about 30 seconds or more and then took my finger off of the key.  As I waited I finally saw that I was on the install DVD, and on the top menu bar I saw “Utilities.”  I had my external Seagate HD mounted on my desk top before I restarted my computer, I selected the “Utilities,” on the menu bar and it gave me the option to back up from Time Machine, I selected my external Seagate HD to the newly created partition I named Snow Leopard and I said “Yes.”  I followed the instructions and after it was done, I went to the menu bar and selected System Preferences, System, Startup Disk, and selected to start up with Snow Leopard.  On my desktop, I can see two Hard Drives, one is Macintosh HD with “Lion,” and the other is Snow Leopard.
Then, I started up my computer and I was on the Snow Leopard partition and I saw all of my apps working.  I then went back to the menu bar and selected System Preferences, System, Startup Disk, and selected to start up with “Lion,” and restarted my computer and I was running “Lion.”
I am not sure why I was not able to use the DVD of SL before, but somehow I got it to work, and I hope that I have explained what I did above.
One thing, when I installed “Lion,” from the app store, I did not make a bootable DVD of the application.  I went back to the app store and downloaded “Lion” again and kept it in the dock until I got Snow Leopard to work.  I burned a DVD of “Lion,” and so I have a backup of it.
Since my Seagate HD has only 250 GB of space and it is an EIDE HD 7,200 rpm using an OWC Mercury Elite FW400/USB2 with the Oxford chipset 911 enclosure which I bought in 2008, I decided that since I now have my 27 inch iMac quad core i5 with 1TB that I needed a larger hard drive.
I researched the web and decided to go back to OWC and just bought a 2.0TB OWC Mercury Elite Pro “Quad Interface” 64MB with eSATA/FW800/FW400/USB2.0 with 7,200 rpm speed for $219.00.  I partitioned it for Time Machine, and Carbon Copy Cloner.
I ran Time Machine, and both partitions “Lion, and Snow Leopard” are on the Time Machine partition and both HD’s are under the Carbon Copy Cloner.
I am self taught on my many iMac’s over the years, and I go to the forums to ask questions and follow the helpful hints to resolve my problems.  I carefully try different things and write down what I did so I don’t repeat things.
I hope that I have explained what I did, and hopefully it will work for you.
When I want to run SL, I select in the System Preferences to start up from that disk, when I want to run Lion, I go back and select that and start up my computer running Lion.
Since I have many old apps that Rosetta uses to open them up in SL I wanted to keep that operating system.  I will go back now that I have everything working and see if I really need them.  I won’t rush to remove my SL partition that I created, but in time if I don’t need the older apps then I may clean out my system and just run Lion.
I run Lion now all of the time, but when I need to go back to SL, I now have the option.
    Good Luck,
    DaisyMay

  • Can't Install Snow Leopard on external drive

    Hey Mac Addicts,
I'm trying to install Snow Leopard on an external drive (Lacie Triple Rugged, FW800 USB3.0)  but keep on getting "Installation failed, can't copy the support files.
My drive is partioned in to 5x100GB partitions, GUID partition scheme. I boot from my installation disk, choose my partition and hit install. The DVD spins and spins and eventually give me a failure. I've tried not installing the custom options (Quicktime 7, Rosetta and have even unchecked X11) but still get the same.
The MacBook Pro I'm trying this from is running 10.6.8 and previous successful attempts at doing this were from 10.6.4, I'm thinking this is the issue, but would rather not have to clean install my machine and try again.
If anybody has any idea's that'll be marvellous, as I am a little confused and lost, especially as I've done this before.
All the best and thanks in advance.
    BigMik

    Two things,
    1: Use FIrewire
2: Use Disk Utility to first Erase with Security Option Zero All Data, the entire drive, then setup the partitions
3: If it doesn't work, then increase the size of the 10.6 parittion or reducing the partitions until it works.
4: Also do all this from the Disk Utility on the internal drive, then try again from the 10.6 install disk. Apple might have pulled something.
Also you can clone your present OS X 10.6 partition using the donationware Carbon Copy Cloner, however the external partition needs to be large enough for all the contents (recommended)

Try my original suggestion to repair the drive and permissions. Then try installing Snow Leopard. I assume you have the Snow Leopard retail DVD?
    Or see:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).
If the above does not work then you may need to first repartition and reformat the hard drive then do a clean install of Snow Leopard. Be sure you first make a backup so you can recover all your files.

  • How do I install Snow Leopard over 10.5.8

I have just recently acquired a MacBookPro from a friend of mine who's father has passed away. I am able to access the computer without a password but the admin is still set to his father and he doesn't know the password. I have the Snow Leopard OS and want to do a clean install like it came from the factory with no personalization. This is the first time I have owned a MacBookPro so I am unsure how to do a clean install of Snow Leopard over the exiting OS 10.5.8 and if I have to delete that OS first. How do I do that?

Insert a retail DVD, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install Snow Leopard.
While the retail DVD can be used to create a fully functional OS, it can’t perform a true factory restore; it won’t install any of the iLife applications.

  • Problem Installing Snow Leopard 10.6.3

Hi I have a Macbook Pro 15" from about 2008-09. I have a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and have 2GB of RAM and meet all the requirements for Snow Leopard.
I recently purchased a retail version of Snow Leopard 10.6.3 from Apple and am having issues installing.
The process begins after choosing my HD as storage and start installation. The bar proceeds to about 10-15% of the way done then restarts to continue installation.
Upon restarting, installation continues and moves up about another 5%..then freezes...then takes me to a  screen asking me to restart, shut down or save error log.
If needed, I'll post the error log. I've verified and repaired HD and disk permissions. I've done a hardware check which came out fine. I've done the thing where you take out the power source, hold the power button for 5 seconds and start again.
Most of the above tips came from Apple Service. So far nothing has helped. Is there anyone out there who knows what's going on? I'd perfer not to do a clean install because I currently am not in possession of an external HD to store my current info. If this is necessary though, I'll see what I can do.
But other than that, does anyone know what's going on?

The installation likely has encountered a bad sector on the hard drive, your course of action is to backup your data off the  machine and then zero erase and install 10.6.3
1: If you can boot the machine into OS X 10.5 or anything, then drag and drop your personal folders of Music, Pictures etc., to a external hard drive you can pick up at any office or computer store.
    Most commonly used backup methods
2: If you can't boot the machine, you going to need a external hard drive and the copy of the 10.5 disks that came with the machine (or upgrade disks) connect the external drive to the Mac and stick the 10.5 disk into the machine and reboot holding the c or option key down, boot from the disk. Your going to Disk Utility format the EXTERNAL DRIVE (GUID OS X extended) and install OS X on it, then when that's finished you reboot holding the option key down and boot from the external drive with 10.5 on it. This will allow you to access the internal drive and grab your files off.
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
3: To learn how to erase and install 10.6 (also works for 10.5) read this link.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Once the files are off the machine to the extenral drive (disconnect it so you don't make a mistake and erase/reformat it), you can c or option key boot off the 10.6 disk and use the erase and install OS X proceedure on the internal drive.
4: Once your internal drive is up on 10.6, make sure you SoftwareUpdate fully to 10.6.8 (I recommend you stay on 10.6.8 on older Mac's and not go to 10.7 or 10.8)
