i cannot install Solaris 10 11/06 x86 on IBM 3560 and 3550 !!! please help.

i start the proccess install. after boot by disc, in the step refill information for start install. about 30 seconds, the server auto reboot. cannot continuous install process. i think the problem is SAS hard drive?

Although laptops are not officially supported, I am aware that another
customer managed to install their system over a network connection
due to local CDROM issues.
This may be something to try if you have access to another SOlaris System with a local CDROM.
As for the Video Card, I have not found any records of anyone
else attempting to use this particular chipset and so you may be
limited to just standard VGA in this case.

We can't install Solaris 8 - IBM PC SERVER 315

Hello:
We are trying to install Solaris 8 (Intel) (02/02) in an IBM PC Server 315.
Some words about it:
- 128 Mb RAM
- Pentium Pro 200 Mhz
- Adaptec AHA-2940U/2940UW Ultra SCSI in PCI bus1,Slot 4 (Info from Solaris install) (Target 7)
- Hard Disk IBM SCSI (Target 0)
- CD-Rom SCSI IBM CDRM00203 (Target 6 of SCSI) (info from Solaris install)
We have a big problem.
We can't install Solaris from CD.
After Loading kernel , when it begins Searching /dev and /devices...we see this text in the screen repeated a lot of times:
WARNING: /pci@0,0/pci1011,24@2/pci9004,8178@1(adp0):
timeout: abort device, target=6 lun=0
And before this something like it has some problem and begins a resinc ??

two other severs wouldn't run the cd either? Break it down a little it will be more solvable. We will create two separate problems with this. First we will check the cd disk itself. Put in another system and install solaris. If that works, move to the cdrom drive....move it to the same computer you just installed solaris on...if it works then it is another problem.

Installing solaris 10 on an IBM server with ServeRAID

G'day,
I want to install solaris 10 on my IBM xSeries eServer 235 and install starts fine but straight away it complains about not finding any HDDs and exits.
I do have HDDs installed, three infact.
They are SCSI on the IBM ServeRAID adaptor and i have used ServerGuide to reformat the disks but solaris just cannot find them.
Why is this??

I did some idgging and i pretty much concluded that
we need serveRAID drivers for the OS be find the
disks.I've got the same thoughts. Though Solaris 10 is listed in Release Notes for the latest IBM ServeRAID Support CD, and CD itself contains floppy images for what it thinks is a 'solaris drivers', but either those drivers doesn't work or there is wrong drivers. Doing as described in "Installing" readme doesn't give much result. BTW - it's initial release of ServeRAID Support CD where support for Solaris OS is offered.
So all the OSs in the serveraid list are the oes that
serveraid will provide a driver for automatically.If only you have had updated both Server BIOS and RAID Adapter firmwares as described in relative readme's.

I've got RHEL ES4 installed in RAID logical volumes, directly from OS installation distro, without using ServeRAID Support CD drivers. But I was supposed to use Solaris and not the RHEL.
Funnily enough when i got it a heat sink fell off the

facing problem while installing solaris 10 05/09 on HP proliant DL 380G5. The array controller is E200.
i have installed the raid controller driver CPQary3-2.1.0-solaris10-i386, it is going ahead but not detecting the whole hard disk space. My hard disk space is SAS 146GB. There are two 146GB hard disk present. It is showing only 978 MB & only one hard disk. So please help me out. my mail ID is [email protected]

I have a similar issue trying to load Solaris 10u4 on an IBM x236.
I had to put in a recognized SCSI card, attach an external array to the card, and install Solaris 10u4 on the array. Then I had to install the correct driver from OpenSolaris (an Adaptec one for IBM ServeRAID), and do a live upgrade onto the now-visible internal disks. Then I removed the array and cleaned up the traces from the live upgrade.
You may have to do something similar.
And last month the boot drive got corrupted when power was interrupted. "Oops. Wrong plugs..." This time the external array will stay connected.

Installing Solaris on Thinkpad 600 Laptop

I have installed Solaris 8 on my laptop which is an IBM Thinkpad 600. Unfortunately, I am unable to configure the X Windows as my graphics card (NeoMagic) does not seem to be recognized.
Has anyone got any thoughts on how to resolve this.
Furthermore, I also have a Compaq Pressario 1600 which has a similar problem (graphics card is a Trident).

I would check the HCL to see if any one has gotten the system installed on that board. ECS isn't known to be a good board for a lot reasons and you find out the reasons by searching.

Installing Solaris 10 On HP ML 350 G5

I have a problem when installing solaris 10 on HP Proliant ML350 G5, it says no disks found,
I have smart array controller E/200 from HP, i downloaded the driver and followed the steps for updating driver during installation of solaris 10,
but i still have the same problem, please help.

Installing Solaris 10 & Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB

Anybody please help. I need to find out if Solaris 10 will take care of finding this external Hard Drive.
I am using USB to connect IBM xSeries 335 Intel�� Xeon�� Processor to Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB USB 2.0 connection and Installing Solaris 10.
I need the Information ASAP.

You should see the drive listed in "iostat -En" output.
"vold" should mount it automatically for you, if the drive contains a Solaris
supported filesystem. AFAIR, the Maxtors come preformatted with a PCFS
filesystem (DOS FAT32 filesystem). "vold" mount the device under
/rmdisk/....

Problems installing Solaris 8 w/ Win2k

Hi all,
I tried to install Solaris 8 IA today on a hard drive that previously had Win2000. I ran into many problems and am incredibly frustrated, so please forgive me. I hope somebody can help.
In essence, I installed Solaris 8, and it looks like it changed my MBR for the worse. I managed to fix part of this, but I later found out it completely re-arranged my Win32 drive letters, rendering my Win2k partition practically unusable.
Here is how my two hard disks were laid out before the install:
HDD-0 (IBM DeskStar 60G) -- Primary IDE Master
25G allocated to a bootable Win2k partition w/ NTFS, mapped as drive "F:\"
35G unallocated, unformated space
HDD-1 (WD Caviar 4G) -- Primary IDE Slave
2G bootable Win95 w/ FAT-16, mapped as drive "C:\"
1G Win95 extended w/ FAT-32, mapped as drive "D:\"
71M Linux swap w/ ext2fs
700M Linux native w/ ext2fs

I am completely uninterested with the MBR of HDD-1. This is just a hard drive I moved over from my old computer that I still use because it has all of my data on it. I no longer boot any OSes from this drive. (BIOS boots to HDD-0.)
When I installed Win2k a month or two ago, it detected my HDD-1 partitions and labelled them as "C:\" and "D:\" (their previous labels when installed on my old computer), and I was forced to make my new Win2k partition on HDD-0 "F:\". I thought this would be a good idea anyway, since I didn't feel like changing all of my old shortcuts, preferences, etc. for my apps on HDD-1.
When I installed Solaris 8 (4/01) today, I gave it about 12G on HDD-0. It seems like I got the whole partitions thing to work well, and after the install, using the Software 1 of 2 CD, it rebooted the computer (as it said it would). I took the CD out, and as it went to boot HDD-0, I got the dreaded "Bad PBR sig". I immediately knew my MBR was messed up.
Now I couldn't boot to Win2k because Solaris was my active partition. I was able to use the Win2k install CD to deactivate the Solaris partition, but I was floored to learn that my drive assignments were completely changed. My F became C, C became D, and D became E. The natural consequence of this was that I couldn't boot Win2k, because my video drivers, etc. are configured to be on "F:\...", which of course doesn't exist. My solution to this was to install another Win2k setup on the same partition (dirty, but works).
Questions:
1) How the heck do I get my original drive assignments back in Win2k? I don't want to have to change all of my setup files to point to C instead of F, D instead of C, etc. (I don't even think this is feasible.) Nor do I want to re-install all of my software. The Win2k install CD and Adminstrative Tools don't seem to provide any way to do this. Is there some (free) partition software I can download to correct this? Can the Solaris fdisk do this?
2) What's up with Solaris? How do I get this to work? I can boot the HD installation from the CD, but I can't do much because my video card apparently isn't supported and so everything comes up yucky. But how can I boot it without the CD and with a dual boot option? Is this one of those "you can't put boot code outside the first 1024 cylinders, yada, yada, yada" deals? If so, just shoot me now. <g>
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I blew the whole day on this. It pains me to say this, but... I know we all crack on Microshaft's business practices, but, FWIW, I installed Win2k in about 30 minutes, with not a single problem, with all devices being configured properly and having drivers, and haven't encountered a glitch since. I think that has a lot to do with their "popularity". There needs to be serious competition.

Well, this is my solution to my problem:
I was able to install a second Win2k on my first hard drive to at least get back to my Win2k stuff. This leaves a total mess though, because now I have two user accounts, two installations, files pointing to the wrong place, registry settings all messed up, drivers installed twice, etc. So what I'm going to do is go ahead and install Linux, leave my Solaris partition alone (I think it's okay, though I can't boot to it w/o the CD), backup all the Win2k data and files I want to keep (not much -- it's a fresh computer), and then reformat my Win2k partition and reinstall Win2k.
The thing I'm still hazy on is the whole "1024 cylinders" issue. I'm not sure if I have to re-partition my hard drive, etc.
When you install Solaris, be sure to remember that Solaris and Linux swap use the same code (0x82 I think it is) for the partition. Read the Solaris documentation to make sure, but I think after you install Solaris you might have to reinstall Linux, or something like that.
Good luck. This is very confusing. I'm disappointed with the lack of documentation for installing Solaris. What did I pay $45 for? Thirty-five different translations of the same skimpy docs? Terrible. At least M$ takes care of its customers.

I have same problem at before. And I can using same hardware for install windows XP.
After, I try to using very good quality DVDROM, very quality and clearly CD install solaris 10. The problem would sometime happen.
I feel the CD have little dirty, you may not install solaris.

Error while installing Solaris 10 using Solaris CD

I'm getting an error while installing Solaris 10 in an Ultra 10 box.
I have Solaris CDs (Total 4) and I have installed Solaris 10 in a Ultra 250 box , I did not get any problem. That means CDs are fine.
But when I try to boot the CD 1 from bootPROM mode by giving the following command
ok boot cdrom
I get the following error :

Then the box boots up with Solaris 8 which it has now..

No disk found error while install Solaris 8 intel on Compaq

I use the interactive installation method to install Solaris 8 02/02 intel platform on Compaq DL380 G2 with 4*36.4 GB harddrive and 2G memory. After I configue the network and time, an error message comes up: "No disk found. Check to make sure disks are cabled and powered up."
When I try the Web Start, it will jump the the shell prompt and say something like "No location for installation software ...."
Could anyone give me some clue? Thanks.

Step by Step Guide to Install Solaris 10 11/06 With Windows XP on x86 PC

hi everyone
here is how I fixed my dual boot & internet connectivity failure problems. I'm explaining in detail to help any Solaris newbie (like me) having same problems: ( as I didn't find any REAL Help thru Sun Help Documents / Pages )
My special thanx to " Phil Brown " ( who helped me alott on this )
First to get rid of Dell's Diagnostic Partition & System Recovery Partition I re-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition & at installation I made 4 Partitions of my Dell 9150 ( x86 Intel Pentium Dual Core ) 238 GB Hard Drive.
(1) C: 100 GB for Windows XP ( NTFS )
(2) D: 80 GB for Solaris 10 ( RAW )
(3) E: 50 GB for Linux ( RAW , which I haven't installed yet )
(4) F: 6 GB (RAW)
(5) G: 2 GB Un-Allocated Space
Restarted PC after Win XP installation & installed Partition Magic 8 . In PM8 I formatted Solaris partition as FAT 32 (at Solaris installation it changed to Solaris format) & Linux as Linux EXT 3 . Rebooted the PC. I Started Solaris 10 11/06 installation from the DVD I burned from Sun downloads.
Here's how I installed Solaris 10 11/06 :
(1) On the next screen after "Loading Stage 2 ... " I selected " Solaris "
(2) Selected " Solaris Interactive (default) installation
(3) Hit "enter" to accept proposed Windows configuration screen it displayed
(4) Selected 0 = English as language (you need to take cursor into white window so you can type 0 into it, otherwise u can't)
(5) hit NEXT
(6) Selected "Networked" option
(7) Selected YES to "Use DHCP for e1000g0 ( Intel Pro/1000 Network Adapter )
(8) Selected NO to "enable IPv6"
(9) Selected NO to "enable Kerberos"
(10) Selected DNS as "Name Service"
(11) entered " f.root-servers.net " as Domain Name
(12) Server's IP address : 192.5.5.241 ( you can choose the one that closest to you by visiting http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/ops/f-root/ )
(13) Search Domain: Left all boxes empty ('coz when I tried to put any IP's into 'em, it generated " SysidgenSyserr " and have to re-start installation )
(14) Geographic Continent / Country / Region: Americas > U. S. > time zone
(15) hit NEXT on Date & Time Screen
(16) Entered password twice
(17) Selected YES to "enable Remote Services"
(18) hit CONFIRM
(19) Clicked NEXT on Solaris installation Welcome screen
(20) Selected NO to " Reboot Automatically " and YES to eject additional CD/DVDs
(21) Clicked OK on NOTICE
(22) Specified CD/DVD as " Media from which you installing Solaris "
(23) Check ACCEPT & hit next
(24) Selected "initial install" & hit next
(25) I choose "Custom Install" > NEXT > North America > and checked both, " English ( U S ) ( en_us) & English ( U S, UTF-8) (en_us.UTF-8) and hit next

(33) It displayed 4 partitions. 1st: " Unknown " 100GB , 2nd: FAT32LBA, this I changed to Solaris by clicking on partition, size 80GB . 3rd: Linux 50GB , 4th: DOSEXTLBA 8GB , hit NEXT
(34) I choose NO to " Preserve Data Warning " (the 80GB partition)
(35) Displayed " Lay Out File Systems " screen, c1d0 was highlighted. > NEXT
(36) On " Ready to Install Screen " it displayed Fdisk partitions: 1st: Unknown "Preserved" , 2nd: FAT32LBA delete, & Solaris add, 3rd: Linux "Preserved" , 4th: DOSEXTLBA "Preserved" >>> hit " Install Now "
(37) When installation finishes hit " Reboot " & when PC was restarting I ejected DVD manually
(38) After re-start it displayed 3 options: 1st: Solaris 10 , 2nd: Solaris failsafe , 3rd: Windows , ENTER on Solaris 10
(39) At sign-in screen, I signed in as, user name: " root " & enterd password (which I typed at installation)
(40) I choose JAVA Desktop System
When it was fully up, the Internet was working right away. Restarted again to check Windows. Selected " Windows " at reboot screen & Windows was working just fine.
It took me few allnighters to figure these out, I hope these will helpful to Solaris newbies like me. Still I can't figure out ... How to install any software (obviously designed for Solaris 10 (x86) ) onto Solaris, but thats a different issue.

It might not be supported, but it works fine for me on my thinkpad :-) .
redhat/solaris/xp.
You can't just use the linux grub, though, because it won't understand
solaris 'slices within partitions'. You need to get Solaris to install
grub itself (in fact, you can't stop it doing so, which is rather unfair),
and then add in the linux * xp entries to Solaris's /boot/grub/menu.lst
(== grub.conf) to get it to pick up fedora & xp. Chainloading xp worked
fine for me. Chainloading RHEL4/5 doesn't, so I had to cat the grub.conf
from red hat on to the end of solaris's menu.lst. Stick red hat's grub.conf
on a USB pen or just write it down before putting Solaris on, otherwise you'll
have to boot linux rescue of a red hat CD in order to get hold of it after
Solaris's grub takes over.

How to Install Solaris for Intel so that it boots off from a boot floppy?

Sorry to bother you with this one (I went through all documentations/manuals and could not find straight answers to following
specific questions):
I have one hard drive with 1st partition used by Windows XP and a second partition that's a blank FAT 32 (using Partition Magic)
I want to use for Solaris for Intel.
My very specific questions:
(1)That blank Fat32 partition: can I run the Solaris install over it ..or should I absolutely make sure that it's a blank UFS formatted
partition? I am asking you that because all manuals (except one) pretend that I can run my Solaris install on a blank Fat partition...
but I believe that documentation at multiboot.solaris-x86.org stresses that if the partition is not a blank UFS one, it wont install Solaris
(2)As you already know, some Oses like Linux or FreeBSD can be installed on a partition and be booted off a boot floppy.
So without that boot floppy, no trace of the OS. How can I do that with Solaris for Intel. I want my Solaris to boot off a boot floppy only.
BTW, I currently have Solaris 7 for Intel.

Problems installing Solaris 8 2/04

I installed Solaris 8 2/04 in a Sun Fire V120 (UltraSPARC-IIe 648MHz), the installation finished but when server restarted it displayed this:

i tried with boot -b but it did not solve the problem, when i tried to start the server normally it could not, I can oly enter to server in maintenance mode, and the sysem could not found a lot of files (like /usr/sbin) and commands (like ls, boot, init).
I found at the start of the installation this display

Since this is a fresh installation, you might consider starting it all over again.
You may have made some initial selections while prompted at the beginning of the install process, that accidentally omitted essential system files.
As for that device path and the disk? It's pointing to an external non-Sun peripheral that's connected to the rear external SCSI port. That drive has some bad sectors. ( I wouldn't trust a new OS on those sectors until you fixed them.)
The errors are not calling out either of the two possible internal drives.
