Install solaris 10 on SPARC error

when i use the "boot cdorm" at the ok prompt to install the solaris
give the flowing output:
feb 11 17:58:21 svc.startd[11]: restarting after interruption
feb 11 17:58:21 svc.startd[14]: restarting after interruption
requesting maintenance mode
why

Hi V
Thanks for the response.
I fixed the problem. Turns out it was because my physical memory for box is 16 gig, but my max-shm-memory was only at 6 GIG. I upped to 8 gig, and everything worked.
I'm sure you were going to tell me to do just that! I found another post that explained it.
Thanks!

  • Needed help in Installing Solaris 10 on sparc box from windows remotely

    Hi All,
I have few Sun Ultra Sparc boxes. I m accessing them only through putty session(serail port) from my windows system.
Now there is a need for me to install Solaris 10 in the sparc box. But the sparc box doesn't have any DVD drive. I have an external DVD drive.
Can somebody help me out to install Solaris on the sparc box with the components I have.
    1) Windows system with putty
    2) External DVD drive
    3) Sun sparc box.
    Thanks for your help,
    T.R.Santhosh

If you run into a problem that causes the machine not to boot, you can't interact with it via putty. You'd need a physical connection, usually either the keyboard and screen or a serial connection. I would always plan to be able to do so during an upgrade.
If you have sufficient disk space, the easiest thing to do would be to copy over the DVD iso, then mount it up with lofi, and do a live upgrade.
Windows doesn't read rockridge format disks. I would worry that having the windows machine read the ISO filesystem and send the files over would cause name issues. That's why getting the full ISO and mounting it locally on the Sparc is best. Fortunately, it doesn't require a physical drive.

  • Install Solaris 8 on SPARC system

    Hi,
I'm new in Unix/Solaris. I tried to install solaris 8 on a sparc system, I downloaded (SOL-8-1_01-FCS-BIN-SPARC-V1 and V2) and i burned 2 CD as. On the sparc system is already SUNOS 5.6 installed. But each time I tried to boot the system it "hang" after the message:" starting rpc services: rcpbind keyserv nis_cachemgr done." What ever I type after this message has no effect at all. I'm allowed to format the disk (home user). The CD-rom player is attached to the Sparc but can not boot the CD. Is there anyone who can help me.
I downloaden olso the pdf files but they were no use for me at this moment.

    Hello,
you will have to go to OK prompt and then boot with CDROM.
1.login as root and then type
    #eeprom auto-boot?=false
2.reboot the system. the system will stop at the OK prompt.
    3. then type:
    OK boot cdrom install
you should see Solaris install program and follow its instruction.
And the error you see seems to be caused by bad network connection

  • Can't install Solaris 8 on SPARC 20

Trying to install from a cdrom I get the following message:
(Can't deduct panicbuf from physical memory list) Program Terminated
Any help to this Sun/Solaris novice will be appreciated.

There is some minimum requirements on the system for S8 installation.
For example, 64M RAM, 1G of Hard Disk, etc.
Please check S8 minimum requirements first in the manual.
In reference to the actuall error, I cant say what it means. But at
what point of installation do you get this error ?

  • Install Solaris 10 Keyboard Layout Error

    Hello,
I've got an odd problem during the installation of Solaris 10.
When installing you can change the video, mouse and keyboard settings. If i change the keyboard from US_English (default) to Belgian (AZERTY), there is no difference.
Its marked as a Belgian keyboard but it act like an US Qwerty.
Has somebody any idea why this problem occurs?
Do i need to patch something after the installation ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Serge Kestens
    [email protected]

kbd -l gives me the following output.
    type=101
    layout=0 (0x00)
    delay(ms)=500
rate(ms)=40OK, so the layout code "0" apparently means something like
unknown or unsupported keyboard layout, it comes from
/usr/lib/set_keyboard_layout, line 51: The layout name "Belgian"
is not handled in the case statement, so the "*" case is used and
    sets layout to "0".
I also checked /usr/X11/lib/X11/xkb/xkbtable.map, the file
used by the Xorg server to map the keyboard type / keyboard
layout to keymap files. It contains no entry for type 101/layout 0,
so the default layout for an US keyboard is used:
    /usr/X11/lib/X11/xkb/xkbtable.map, line 122:
    # Type 101 Keyboards (Solaris x86 Keyboards)
    101     *       -       pc105                   us      # MS_US101A_x86
...There are currently no Belgian layouts for type 101 keyboards
    defined in this file!
And with the Xsun server, things are not much better. Looking
in /usr/openwin/share/etc/keytables, there are no _x86.kt.Z
keytable files for a Belgian layout. (There is a Belgian6.kt
file, but this is only used for SPARC Type-6 USB keyboards)

  • How to remove Solaris 9 to install Solaris 8 on Sparc?

Okay, I'm fairly new to this. I've got some software compiled to run on Solaris 8, not 9, so what would be the best way to remove the existing Solaris 9 installation to make way for 8?
The box is an Ultra10 elite 3d, 1 hard drive, 512MB RAM, 440Mhz.
    Thanks in advance.

Why do you think you have to remove Solaris 9 just because the software is compiled for Solaris 8 ?
Have you tried running the software on Solaris 9 ?

  • Installing Solaris 10 on Sunfire V120 via network boot from Linux

I have been given a free SunFire V120 server loaded with and old copy of Solaris 9. The problem is that this server no longer has the internal DVD/CDRom drive any more. Google'd for finding a replacement CD-Rom drive show cost more than the SunFire V120 unit itself.

Anyone know where I can get the firmware (OBP) update / upgrade version 4.22 for the SunFire V120 server?
There is an old thread (http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5137796) that talks of having to update your firmware 4.22.x, but I have looked through the SunSolve site and I cannot find a reference to this firmware any place for the SunFire V120 servers.

  • Getting an error 'Cannot open Boot device' while trying to install Solaris

    Hi,
We were trying to install Solaris * on a Sun Sparc system and the CD rom drive does not seem to get recognised. When we try booting from cd rom we get an error 'Cannot open boot device' .
This server was up & running and we were trying to remove a hard disk that had failed and modified the vfstab script . After that the system failed to even boot up. So when we tried reinstalling the OS we are running into this problem.
Am new to this technology ...And any help would be greatly appreciated. .....
    Thanks

Cdrom drive must be scsi device 6
I assume you are running < boot cdrom> at the ok prompt
also at the ok prompt run the command <probe-scsi> (without the angled brackets) you need to see the following:
    Target 6
Unit 0 Removable read only device TOSHIBA XM.......bigpileofnumbers
If not, check the cdrom drive and the cdrom inside
    hope this helps

  • Install Solaris 10 Sparc on Ultra 40

I am trying to install solaris 10 Sparc on an Sun Ultra 40 i386 pc. Is that able to be done. I have libraries that only work on sparc machines. Thanks for any help.

SPARC and i386 are different CPUs. They are not compatible.
You run SPARC installations on SPARC hardware, you run x86 installations on x86 hardware.
