Install Solaris 8 on Ultra Sparc 5

Hello! All
I am trying to format my hard Drive which running on Solaris 7 and install Solaris 8. Could someone tell me the step by step process(in detail) to finish this job?
Thanks
John

at the <ok> prompt,
boot cdrom -s
when you get the # prompt, type format. select the disk you want to put S8 on, I guess it will be c0t3d0...
select format again from within the format menu and this will format your disk..
When this is done, shutdown and then boot from S8 cd and just follow the 'noddy' instructions to load S8.

  • Ethernet problems installing Solaris 10 on Ultra 5

I am trying to install on a Sun Sparc Ultra 5 which I have inherited. The machine booted up OK with Solaris 7 with the old user's set up, but I do not have his ids or passwords.
When I try to install Solaris 10, early in the boot it comes up with "attempting to configure interface hme0..."
the a wait for a while then "Skipped interface hme0"
The network is OK and so is the cable - I checked them by swapping the leads with my lap top which could access the network fine.
I then went through and selected the language (English), selected 'networked', 'dhcp' then 'IPv6' then it comes up with "just a moment" then a long wait before "Could not contact a dhcp server on network interface hme0"
The dhcp server on the University network was fine.
I would be very grateful for any ideas or suggestions.
    Many thanks,
    Chris.

    Christian,
The integrated NIC may or may not be working.
I'm going to presume you have a Sun keyboard, a Sun mouse and a monitor connected.
I'm also going to presume, unless you tell us otherwise, that you have never worked with Sun systems, before this Ultra-5.
    Boot the system.
Just as you see a signal successfully activate the monitor, hold the STOP key and press the letter "A".
This stop-a sequence will halt the boot process and leave you at OpenBoot. Your screen prompt will the the word <b>OK</b>
There are many tests that you can perform at OBP, without invoking any OS. For today's tasks, you can prepare the chassis for a network circuit test.
    Do ...
    <b> OK set-defaults</b> <enter>
<b>OK setenv auto-boot? false</b> <enter> (note the question mark character)
    <b>OK reset-all</b> <enter>
Those three items will clear the OBP of any confusing or customized settings, then it will prepare the chassis to always stop automatically at the OK prompt, then it will write your choices to the PROM and reboot the system.
You can reset the <i>auto-boot?</i> back to true when you are finished.
After the reboot it should automatically stop at OK.
If it does not do so, then you had a typo in your commands.
Type <b>sifting watch</b> to be presented with all the command syntax that includes the word "watch". Find the network test that checks for connectivity.
    Do ...
    <b>OK watch-net</b> <enter>
If the Ethernet port has link to a valid network, you will see dots scroll along. An occasional 'X' is a lost packet.
You can download the 211+ page PDF file for the OBP 3.x command reference from Sun's documentation site, Docs.Sun.Com.
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/coll/1140.2?q=openboot+command+ reference
This is all described in that PDF.

  • Help!  Having Trouble Installing Solaris 10 on a SPARC machine

    Hi All,
I recently found a new job, and one of the requirements is I learn Solaris 10. I have successfully loaded the most recent x86 version on a laptop, but.....
My workplace has a sun blade 2500 (several actually) and I am trying to load the newest Solaris 10 SPARC version that I just downloaded. I downloaded it on my PC (Windows vista, yech), unpacked the ISO using winzip, and burned the files to a DVD. When I put that newly burned DVD into the sunblade 2500, I press stop-a, then type "boot cdrom", and after the reboot, I get a message saying
Bad magic number in disk label
    Can't open disk label package
    Can't open boot device
    {0} ok
So for some reason my burned DVD is giving me a "bad magic number" error - and its not just one machine, all the machines I tried to load it on said the same thing.
Fortunately, a co-worker that recently left the company had Solaris 10 burned to a set of CDs (5 plus the language CD) and that installed well (albeit version 08/07 of Solaris 10).
So I am at the point where I can probably figure out how to upgrade the machine, but it bothers me that I couldnt successfully download the ISO from sun, unpack the contents, burn said contents to a DVD (using Windows), then take that DVD and install SPARC Solaris 10 on a sun blade 2500. I know that at some point I wont have the crutch of those CDs. Does anyone know what I was doing wrong? Is there a certain way you have to burn the DVD, or use a certain package to unpack the ISO for the SPARC version?
    Thanks,
    Brent

    Hi,
Make sure that write your DVD at 8X speed.

  • Trouble installing Solaris 10 on Ultra 5!

Got this free U5 and just today I received a keyboard and mouse I had bought on eBay. So I went ahead and tried to install and didn't even know how to boot from CD (I am totally new to Sun hardware). So after googling a bit I have gotten as far as the point where after booting from CD and filling out all the necessary information like hostname locale etc,I select the standard disk layout without preserving data (thinking that this way a brand new drive layout will be created) and every time it seems like the installation begins but then upon reboot the system says that "the file loaded does not appear to be executable" and it just hangs at the ok prompt.
This workstation has 256 RAM and the cpu is a 360IIi,Openboot 3.25 and an IDE disk 8.4 Gb in size.
I am stumped at this point since I am actually pretty good when it comes to Windows and OS X but this hardware/software is totally new to me and at this point I need some concrete steps to resolve this and get it installed. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you, jenny. So it works the same way as OS X,then. Now I am again attempting to install and so far I have specified host name,ip addres and default route, set it to no kerberos,no remote services enabled, country, locale etc also have been set. I specified the default install;then it went into initializing system, loaded media and after a while I get the license screen,I select to install entire distribution after which I am presented with a screen asking me to identify the disk where I wish to install.
There is only one disk that I see ( c0t0d0) and if I press F4 to customize I am given the choice of selecting a boot device as follows :
    Original boot disk:
    [  ] c0t0d0s0
    [  ] c0t0d0s1
    [  ] c0t0d0s2
    [  ] c0t0d0s3
    [  ] c0t0d0s4
    [  ] c0t0d0s5
    [  ] c0t0d0s6
    [  ] c0t0d0s7
    [ x ] Any of the above
I think this is where I am getting stuck.I sthere anything I need to do specifically at this point?I am going to leave the machine sitting at this screen for the time being. Thank you all for your help...
After a few minutes it rebooted all by itself and showed a scrolling screen fulls of errors and it seemed to have something about a memory DIMM_could this be bad memory after all???

  • Needed help in Installing Solaris 10 on sparc box from windows remotely

    Hi All,
I have few Sun Ultra Sparc boxes. I m accessing them only through putty session(serail port) from my windows system.
Now there is a need for me to install Solaris 10 in the sparc box. But the sparc box doesn't have any DVD drive. I have an external DVD drive.
Can somebody help me out to install Solaris on the sparc box with the components I have.
    1) Windows system with putty
    2) External DVD drive
    3) Sun sparc box.
    Thanks for your help,
    T.R.Santhosh

If you run into a problem that causes the machine not to boot, you can't interact with it via putty. You'd need a physical connection, usually either the keyboard and screen or a serial connection. I would always plan to be able to do so during an upgrade.
If you have sufficient disk space, the easiest thing to do would be to copy over the DVD iso, then mount it up with lofi, and do a live upgrade.
Windows doesn't read rockridge format disks. I would worry that having the windows machine read the ISO filesystem and send the files over would cause name issues. That's why getting the full ISO and mounting it locally on the Sparc is best. Fortunately, it doesn't require a physical drive.

  • Install Solaris 8 on SPARC system

    Hi,
I'm new in Unix/Solaris. I tried to install solaris 8 on a sparc system, I downloaded (SOL-8-1_01-FCS-BIN-SPARC-V1 and V2) and i burned 2 CD as. On the sparc system is already SUNOS 5.6 installed. But each time I tried to boot the system it "hang" after the message:" starting rpc services: rcpbind keyserv nis_cachemgr done." What ever I type after this message has no effect at all. I'm allowed to format the disk (home user). The CD-rom player is attached to the Sparc but can not boot the CD. Is there anyone who can help me.
I downloaden olso the pdf files but they were no use for me at this moment.

    Hello,
you will have to go to OK prompt and then boot with CDROM.
1.login as root and then type
    #eeprom auto-boot?=false
2.reboot the system. the system will stop at the OK prompt.
    3. then type:
    OK boot cdrom install
you should see Solaris install program and follow its instruction.
And the error you see seems to be caused by bad network connection

It seems that version of Solaris I trying to install is not support by the Hardware, when I use another Solaris 10 DVD, it works...
But the problem is that I need to install this Solaris version because others softwares are depending on that.
If someone knows how to make this installation possible, it will be very helpfull.

  • Getting an error 'Cannot open Boot device' while trying to install Solaris

    Hi,
We were trying to install Solaris * on a Sun Sparc system and the CD rom drive does not seem to get recognised. When we try booting from cd rom we get an error 'Cannot open boot device' .
This server was up & running and we were trying to remove a hard disk that had failed and modified the vfstab script . After that the system failed to even boot up. So when we tried reinstalling the OS we are running into this problem.
Am new to this technology ...And any help would be greatly appreciated. .....
    Thanks

Cdrom drive must be scsi device 6
I assume you are running < boot cdrom> at the ok prompt
also at the ok prompt run the command <probe-scsi> (without the angled brackets) you need to see the following:
    Target 6
Unit 0 Removable read only device TOSHIBA XM.......bigpileofnumbers
If not, check the cdrom drive and the cdrom inside
    hope this helps

I am trying to install solaris 10 Sparc on an Sun Ultra 40 i386 pc. Is that able to be done. I have libraries that only work on sparc machines. Thanks for any help.

SPARC and i386 are different CPUs. They are not compatible.
You run SPARC installations on SPARC hardware, you run x86 installations on x86 hardware.

  • Solaris 8 in ultra 2 got panic and auto reboot when install Oracle software

    Dear all,
I installed Solaris 8 by selecting 'Entire Solaris Software Group' and select 32 bit support only in an old ultra II machine. Then I tried to install Oracle 8.1.7 in the same machine but machine always got panic and started auto reboot when Oracle installed about 17% or 20% or even 70% (I tried install the minimum of Oracle).
What is the problem? Anyone can help?
    Thanks in advance,
    Vicky

I think you need to check the parameters like SHMMAX etc in /etc/system file as recommanded by oracle if not already added you need to add them .Oracle manuals have a list of these parameters and don't forget to reboot and boot with boot -r after adding these parameters.
Make sure you have sufficient memory or some patch recommanded by Oracle .

  • Solaris 10 on Ultra 10 Sparc

I tried to install Solaris 10 on my Ultra 10, and there seemed to be 2 partitions, each of which had ~4100 MB, which is not e enough for Solaris 10 (requires about 5GB).
During install, there was about 4096 MB allotted to a */ partition and 4096 allotted to a / partition. The auto-layout method would not let me collapse the two. Is there a workaround, or should I just plug in a new SCSI. Last, since the Ultra is IDE, can't I just install an IDE SCSI from a local computer store?
    Thx,
    lep

    morgair suggested:
" +If you are going to invest in an IDE you can get a decent one with 200+ GB for about 60 to 70 dollars.+ "
That's all fine and good, but your Ultra 10's onboard IDE controller is not 48bit capable.
It wil not recognize more than 137GB of such a drive.
    http://www.48bitlba.com/index.htm
For internal disks in such a system
(designed in 1997, first shipped in 1998 and EOL'd in 2002)
I suggest you stay with 120GB or smaller drives.
Additionally, if the OBP is down-rev,
you'll have problems having it recognizing drives of "today's" sizes.
    Consider:
Install a core Solaris 10 to the 8GB disk.
    Get something+ functional.
Update the OBP from that OS environment.
Then replace the disk with something larger
and reinstall to whatever you want to do.
You could take the 8GB and slave it as a data disk in some PeeCee, somewhere.

  • Hard disk problem after installing Solaris 10 u5 on a Sun Ultra 24

    Hi.
After receiving a new Sun Ultra 24, shipped with Solaris 10 u4, the first thing I did was installing Solaris 10 u5. X wouldn't start but that was not a big problem and installed it in text mode. Installation went fine but, when the system starts, a single beep is heard and after some seconds some warning message appear on the console, before the "Hostname: ..." message, informing that some read operation on my hard disk had timed out and were aborted. The system then starts up normally. The only other anomaly is that the diagnostic partition in unbootable.
I ran the hard disk tests from the tools and drivers CDs and all of the tests were passed. Solaris 10 u4 was working normally so I'm wondering if this may be a bug.
    Thanks for your help,

Thanks anyway, I discovered what the problem was: a bug in Solaris 10 u5:
