Install Solaris from another OS via network - How ?

I'd like to use a BSD machine as an install server for a machine that doesn't have a CD. On the BSD machine is an iso image of the Sol 10 DVD from SUN's website. It's mounted via loopback device.
I'd like to know which files are necessary to boot and which possibilties exist to access the rest of the files - can the installer use http ?

You need to make the BSD machine an ARP/RARP server and TFTP server. As an ARP/RARP server it will respond to the Sun system when it asks to convert its MAC address to a hostname/IP address. The TFTP function will allow the BSD system to send the boot kernel (which you also need to procure) to the Solaris system. You need to have the ISO image shared out through NFS as well.
Of course, this doesn't include all of the other necessary work : profiles, boot parameters, etc.
As to how to specifically to this, I'm not sure. I have seen documents on the web from people who have done this, but I've never touched BSD. If you can get BSD to be an appropriate ARP/RARP and TFTP server, you'll be most of the way there as the rest should be done by the Sun system through NFS. It just needs to ARP/RARP and kernel (through TFTP) to get it to that point.
Of course, if the Sun system has a SCSI port you could buy a cheap, external SCSI drive on eBay and plug it in. :)

  • Installing solaris from the hard disk

    i am new to solaris. i just wanna know is there a way of installing solaris from the hard drive

    If you are new to Solaris I would advise you to stick to CD installations. Atleast in the beginning.
    Having advised that, it is known that installing from cd can be a bit tricky is getting the install going.
    Don't be supprised if your first attempt fails with disk-read errors. Try again.
    More specific in relation to your question:
    Solaris has many ways in which you can install the os, and from hardisk over the network to the machine to be installed is one of these possibities.
    If you where thinking about doing the install from one partition to an other partition of the harddisk, that I am afraid I have to dissapoint you.
    NB: for every version of Solaris there are several Installation documents on the web: docs.sun.com

    How can I edit my website from another computer? and how can I create a new website next to the one, I already have? Can anyone help, please?

    Move the domain.sites file from one computer to the other.
    The file is located under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites.  Move this file to the same location on the other computer and double click and iWeb will open it.  Remember, it is your User Library that you want and not your System Library, as you will not find iWeb there.
    Just create a new site on the same domain file and it will appear below the other site.  If you want them side by side then duplicate your domain file and have one site per a domain file and they can then be side by side.

  • Installing solaris from a windows xp computer over a network

    Hi, I just received the solaris 10 dvd from sun. I have the sparc and the x86 versions. The problem I have now is that I need to install it onto a computer that does not have a dvd drive. Here is the current set up of the network:
    I have three computers connected by a switch. Then I also have a laptop which has a wireless connection to the internet. The laptop also has a cable connection to the switch which allows me to share the internet connection to the other three computers. Not the best setup, because when I leave with the laptop the desktops have no internet. Anyway, the laptop has Windows XP microsoft internet connection sharing enabled so it acts as the router. The desktops, one has FreeBSD with DHCP enabled, another has windows xp and the third has Ubuntu. The LAN is working well so far as all can connect to the net.
    So now I would like to know if I can and how to install solaris onto the Ubuntu desktop with the dvd inserted into my windows xp laptop over the network. This will be my first Solaris install so I really appreciate all the help and pointers to any tutorials on the net.
    Thanks!

  • How to install Solaris from a Windows computer

    I have recently received the Solaris operating system on DVD. The only computer that I have that has a DVD player is my laptop. It is however connected to the desktop that I wold like to install the system onto by a switch. I am not sure how to go about installing solaris over the LAN onto the desktop. This is the current setup.
    The desktop has Ubuntu with no direct connection to the internet. The Laptop has a wireless connection to the net with Internet connection sharing enabled. The two are connected via a switch and the laptop acts as a router to assign the ip address for the desktop. I would like to know how I can Install Solaris to the desktop over the network from the windows laptop.
    Please help!
    Thanks.

    Yes it does. I did that before but I could never get the image to boot after recording it to cd.
    Thanks for the reply by the way. I actually found some articles that I am reading through at:
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-5504/6mkv4nh3p?a=view
    This seems to be going in the right direction. My next question I guess will be how to boot the client from the network. I am not sure how to map the boot procedure to the server. Any ideas are welcome.

  • How to view aperture library from another computer on network?

    Hi,
    I'd like to simply view (not edit) my aperture library from another computer on my home network. The aperture library resides on a mac pro, and I'd like to see the images on a macbook pro to show family members. On the surface, this seems like a simple concept - as Apple TV can do this with home sharing. Further, itunes can share it's library in this manner.  Is this possible?
    thank you,
    T

    You don't mention which OS you're using and I understand that Lion has changed some of the sharing features but  what you are looking to do is doable.
    Be warned that accessing an Aperture library over a network is slow and definitely not something you want to do if editing except in an emergency and you want to make triple sure that only one user is accessing the library at a time.  But I regularly access libraries over wireless when I'm to lazy to walk across the house and need to check somthing out.
    If you are using Snow Leopard go into System preferences->Sharing and tune on file sharing on the the Mac Pro. If you have the same user name on both systems you should have no problem accessing the library from the MBP.
    If you're on Lion, you'l need to lok up how to enable file sharing. I haven't swithced so I can;r help you there.
    good luck

  • Is it possible to install OSX on another computer via Target disk mode?

    Hey there...
    a friend of mine has an older iBook. the drive on this iBook is broken (snapped off) so there's no way of using it.
    is it possible to install OS Panther from another computer (use OS X panther install running on a MacBook, or G4) targeting the iBook via Target Disk mode?
    thanks!
    -

    Hello Again SCHPiLKAS!
    As roam posted, you cannot use the Intel MacBook install discs, on the PPC iBook.
    Additional info in these links.
    Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
    What's A Computer Specific Mac OS X Release
    Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
    If the iBook meets the Panther System Requirements, and the Additional Panther System Requirements, and you have a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, you can use Firewire Target Disk Mode, to install the system.
    The Panther discs should look, exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

  • Not able to execute one Java program from another one via. exec()

    Hi,
    I am new to this forum, so I might be asking a very trivial quetion.
    My program Ap1 is :

    Process p=null;
    p=rt.exec("javac,Pr.java");

    I am just wondering how to call one Java program from another one?!
    Please help.
    thanks

    Hi diptaPB,
    Thanks for your suggestion.
    Here is how I tried it again, but not getting the desired output:
    Class Pr looks like below -->
    class Pr
    public static void main(String a[])
    System.out.println("hi from process");
    When I run 'Pr' from command prompt, i get the desired output:
    D:\batchwe>java Pr
    hi from process
    However, when I call 'Pr' from another program Ap2.java, it seems that it does not call 'Pr':
    class Ap2
    public static void main(String a[]) throws Exception
    Runtime rt=Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process p=null;
    String[] cmd=new String[2];
    cmd[0]="javac";
    cmd[1]="Pr.java";
    p=rt.exec("cmd");
    D:\batchwe>javac Ap2.java
    D:\batchwe>java Ap2
    ************* no output appears here***********************
    Looking forward for your help.

  • Boot / install os from another machine rather than cd drive?

    Hi,
    My powerbook's CD/DVD drive has stopped working. I have an external CD/DVD reader/writer so I don't want to replace the broken internal CD/DVD module. But what happens when I need to install a new OS or I get drive problems and need to boot from another system?
    Is it possible to use another computer instead of buying a new CD/DVD drive and somehow be able to do the same sort of thing that you can do when you boot up from a CD?
    TIA, John.

    Some external CD/DVD reader/writer are capable of booting the computer from an OS X install disc. Although there is alternative method for doing so, you need to be able to boot from your current OS X install disc in order to run Disk First Aid repair on the hard drive.
    If your external CD/DVD reader/writer does not support booting your Mac from an OS X install disc and your Mac has Firewire ports and supports Firewire Target Disk mode, you can connnect another Mac with a Firewire port that includes a working CD/DVD module and also supports Firewire Target Disk mode and install a new OS on your Mac from this Mac.

  • Can I re-install Logic from another machine ?

    since , I have a CPU and a laptop , and I am on travel and I would like to use Logic pro with my macbook pro . can I re-install Logic from the Laptop .?

    Pondini wrote:
    Why is it in a disk image?   (I use CarbonCopyCloner, not SuperDuper).
    I call it that because I thought that was what SD termed it.  When I open any of the backup files, they mount like a disk image so, to me, that's what it is.  Sorry if my terminology confused things.
    Pondini wrote:
    Can you boot your Mac from the drive?  If so, it's just a normal clone, not a disk image.
    I believe so.  (However, it's a ML system and all the other computers in the house, except the dead one, still run Snow Leopard.)  In any case, the file is a sparse bundle.
    Pondini wrote:
    If so, your solution is easy -- use Setup Assistant when the new Mac first starts up.  Select From Another Disk when asked if you want to Transfer your data.  See Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion for the gory details. It can transfer everything but OSX -- apps, user accounts and data, settings, etc.  It's similar to Migration Assistant, but avoids some possible problems.
    That sounds ideal.  However, my Master Plan ran into a snag late yesterday.  I tried to create a backup (using SD) to get the latest stuff into an image, but SD gave an error message when it encountered one of the files (the Parallels app, which happens to be the very app that we're most keen to migrate over intact.  The error message (using AAA and BBB in place of the full paths) read:
    Error copying /Volumes/AAA to /Volumes/BBB of type 8 due to error 7: Argument list too long
    The file in question is one of the files internal to the Parallels app itself
    (Parallels Desktop.app/Contents/MacOS/launcher)
    so I don't know if I have options to work around this and have SD go to completion.  SD aborted when it hit that error.
    I have a couple of days to play around with this, to try to get a more recent backup.  Otherwise, I'll have to ponder the alternatives.
    Thanks for the good discussion and tips!

  • Can I send email address, message, etc. to TB from another application via DLL

    I have an application written in Omnis Studio version 4.X. It has the ability to act as a email client but only supports simple password authentication. I can get around this on the Mac by using AppleScript to send the contents of the email, to & from addresses, et. from my application to Mail. mail then acts as the mail client and processes the emails.
    I'm looking for a similar solution for my Windows users. Can TB accept a DLL message from another application as a way to pass an email from Omnis to TB?
    Thanks,
    Mike K

    No Mike, whilst it is probably possible considerable development effort would be required.
    Have you looked at the[http://kb.mozillazine.org/Command_line_arguments_%28Thunderbird%29 command line switches]? perhaps they will do the job for you, but you still need to press the Send button to actually send the message.

  • How do I install updates from another computer?

    Got a macbook, and a windows.
    How do I install updates for my macbook (software update.app updates) from my windows computer? Can i somehow download.. example, if i have snow leopard 10.6.1, can i then download an update on windows that updates my mac to 10.6.8?

    Okay, cool. Is it always "Combo updater" or "Update Combined" that i should download?
    I downloaded one of the 10.6.8 updates from apple.com, and it said that i needed 10.6.7 before i installed 10.6.8.
    But I got paritioned HD's, one lion and one snow leopard, When lion 10.7.1 or 10.7.2 comes out, can I then download the updates on windows and transfer that update to mac and update just cool?
    And how do i stay up-to-date with this?
    And other software updates, such as fixes in the trackpad, and such random stuff (not itunes, mail, automator, etc updates, only Main OS updates..) How do i stay up to date with that?

  • How to extract vcards from another Mac via FireWire

    Hello all,
    The screen on my wife's G3 800MHz iBook running Tiger finally burned out and I've been forced to manually transfer all of her files onto our emergency backup clamshell 466 MHz iBook SE (yeah, yeah, I know it's time to start thinking about upgrades, not downgrades).
    The only problem I've encountered so far is that I can't find her address book entries. I've tried looking for individual vCards to drag over with no luck. Should I be looking for a .plist file, and if so where can I find it? I've searched through both root and user libraries as well as the Address Book application's contents.
    Thanks in advance!
    Jason

    the address book data is kept in the following directory:
    /users/username/library/application support/address book.
    you want to copy the whole thing.

  • Print from Windows desktop via network, when the printer was first set up on a Mac

    My new printer works fine from my Mac mini. It is set up on my local network through a BT hub router, wirelessly, Bonjour enabled.When I try to set it up in addition to work from a Windows 8.1 desktop, the printer is recognised and the print-job goes to the print queue but then vanishes from the queue without any printing having started.I have tried using Wireless Direct for the Windows computer but it doesn't seem to help.I will now uninstall and re-install the Officejet on the 8.1 using the disc and see if that helps.I understand (is this right?) that enabling printer sharing doesn't help, as there are two different OS (Mac and MS).Any help would be very welcome.I had before another HP printer (Photosmart B110a) for the windows 8.1 (and on the Mac) and it never seemed properly installed on the Windows computer either. But it did print (but not scan etc.)

    This problem is a result of a limitation in Windows 9x regarding the size of an image that you can send to the printer. The problem does not occur on Windows 2000/NT. This problem appeared with the increased color options of LabVIEW 6.0 on which the BB1.2 is based.Although it is not immediately obvious, your video driver and settings play a role in printing.
    1. Try adjusting the color palette your driver uses (i.e., 256 color, high olor, true color). The error may occur only in one of these modes. Also, change the resolution (number of pixels) to represent the Screen Area; e.g., change from a 1024 x 768 display to an 800 x 600 pixel display.
    2.Certain video drivers also support "acceleration" modes. Using a non-accelerated mode often eliminates the error. For
    Windows 95/98, right-click on your My Computer icon and select "Properties" from the pop-up
    menu. On the Performance tab, click the Graphics button and change the Hardware Acceleration (e.g., if it is set to "Full", lower the setting a notch or two); for Windows 2000/NT, right-click on your Desktop and select "Properties" from the pop-up menu. On the Settings tab, click the Advanced button and go to
    Troubleshooting.
    3.In Windows, the standard VGA driver provided by the operating system is very stable. Try using this driver in place of the specific one written for your video hardware. If the error is eliminated, there is likely a problem with your vendor-provided video driver.
    4.These errors are most often fixed with the latest
    video/printer driver. Be sure to contact your hardware manufacturer and install the latest driver. An easy way to determine if your error is "driver-related" is to move your code to another machine (and hopefully a different set of drivers) and see if th
    e error persists. If the problem is printer related, try another printer.
    5.Make sure there are at least 100M avalible space in your C: drive. If not, set the virtual memory to the other drive which has larger available space.
