Install Tiger on G4 with system 10.3 and OS9 / Help !

Okay I'm still having trouble updating to Tiger
I get message "software problems" • Restart •
so I do and the same thing happens...
1. I have tried to do it on my G5 no problem
2. Cleaned disk and drive .
3. disconected all items from USB hub and fire wire ports
checked RAM all of it is Apple and working I have 1GB
HELP ! HELP !
what could it be ?

Are you using any scsi devices ? I use a 5 years old LaCie cd-rw. If the cd-rw is powered on the G4 tells me to reboot again and again. So I removed powered it off and was able to install x.4 on top of my x.3 Now when I power on the cd-rw and boot the G4 it still demands me to reboot, but now in x.4 . I'm not happy the thing doesn't work in x.4 but I fear I'll have to get used to it.
Good luck !

You need to partion the hard drive using Disk Utility. On one partition install 10.4. On the other 10.6. As a note I trust you are doing this on a MBP and not a PPC Mac because 10.6 won't install.

  • How to install Tiger on iBook with cd drive only?

SInce Tiger is on a DVD, I'm thinking I gotta do a target disk mode thing. Anyone else done that? What's the procedure?
    thanks

The procedure is to hook the two machines up with a FireWire cable, and then hold down the T key while starting up the iBook. Doing this requires that both machines are capable of running the retail version of Tiger; some recent machines can't. You should not do this if the other machine is a G5; one person messed up their system by doing so. Otherwise, you shouldn't have any problems.

  • How to install Tiger to iBook with CD Rom drive?

My daughter has an iBook currently running OS 10.3.8, and I'd like to upgrade it to run Tiger. Unfortunately her iBook doesn't have DVD read capability, only a CD drive. How do I install Tiger onto her iBook, or is she stuck with Panther forever? I have a G4 PowerBook with Tiger installed, can I use my PB somehow to upgrade her iBook?
    Thanks
    Kevin

Hi Kevin from Northeast (UK or US?)
As long as the copy of Tiger that she has is the black retail version then there should be no problems.
Insert the DVD into the PB. Shut the PB down. Restart the PB holding the T key down until you see the big firewire Y jumping around. Connect the PB and the iBook with a firewire cable. The PB's HD and the loaded Tiger disk will appear in the iBook's Finder. Select the Tiger disk and double click on the 'Install OS X' icon. You will then be presented with a choice of destinations and a choice of installation options.
(You could, instead, start the iBook in Target Disk Mode and run the installation from the PB. Same difference.)
Providing your daughter has no problems with her existing Panther installation there is no reason why you shouldn't opt for the 'Upgrade' which will preserve all user settings, preferences, documents etc., although it would be wise to back up to another medium before you start. An external HD is ideal, but spare space in the PB would suffice for her 'Home' folder at least.
The other choices besides 'Upgrade' are Erase & Install which does exactly what it says, or Archive & Install.
Not knowing your level of expertise on Macs I don't want to possibly bore you with minutiae but feel free to ask if you're not clear on anything.
    Good luck,
    Adrian

  • CS$ Mac Install error after problems with system

I have Illustrator CS4 for Mac.  Had system problems and several programs failed to run after re-installing system 10.6.8.  Now all (including PSE) work except for Illustrator.  Have tried to re-install Illustrator, but when the installer finishes, it says, "installation complete with errors.  It suggests re-starting and trying again, which I have done several times.  I have also run the uninstall app and then re-installed.  After quitting the installer, Illustrator will open to the start screen, but clicking on any of the choices or selecting open or new from the file menu results in the program quitting.  I really need this to do my work, and have people waiting for jobs.

Of course that should say CS4, not CS$.  This is an iMac (late 2006) with System 10.6.8.  There is nothing in any crash or log files that makes sense to me.  Here is the message.
I have tried a few hints found in other posts for other install issues.  Am still having the same situation.  It starts, but accessing any menu or a choice from the startup screen results in the program quitting.

  • Installing tiger on powerbook with broken screen

I am attempting to install Tiger on an older Powerbook (G4 Titanium 1ghz 1gb), which has a damaged and illegible LCD. The machine is fully up to date with 10.3.9, and works fine connected to a Cinema display.
After booting from the 10.4 install DVD, it appears that the updater wants some kind of input, but this is not being echoed to my external monitor. I've tried it with display mirroring both off and on, but to no avail. Does the update work only with the onboard monitor when it senses a Powerbook ? And if so, are screencaps out there somewhere so that I can try to answer the install prompts while flying blind ?
    thanks !
    Powerbook G4 Titanium   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I don't know about the external monitor, but you can install OSX on any Firewire disk.
To boot from that blind Mac, plug in the blind Mac to a working Mac with a Firewire cable. Boot the blind Mac holding the "t" key down (for Target). The blind machine's hard disk should appear in the other Mac's mounted disk list. Proceed to install on the Firewire mounted disk.
Once that is done, boot from the blind Mac's hard disk and finish the setup. To do this, start it up while holding down the "t" key. Shut down other Mac and hold down the option key while starting. The "Restart" menu item may not work here, so you may need to completely shut down and start from the power button.
Now you see the screen to choose what disk to boot from. Boot from the blind disk and your working Mac will be running from the blind Mac's hard disk and you can set it up for remote login, etc.

  • Trying to install Tiger on 17" flat screen imac 800mhz. PLEASE HELP!!

I posted on this board a few days ago about installing tiger on my 17” imac G4 800 mhz Flat Panel.
My computer is running well and with no problems.
My current OS is jaguar 10.2.8 and 9.2.2.
I have 35gb free on my hd.
I have just installed new 517mb memory.
I purchased the Full Retail 10.4 Tiger ref M96392Z/A
    I have run
    Disk First Aid
    Disk Warrior
    Hardware Check
    All passed
    I have repaired permissions.
I have unplugged everything except the keyboard and mouse.
I have inserted the the installation DVD and gone through the first 2 stages.
On reaching the selection of the HD
It reads “Some volumes are unavailable until the installer has finished processing”
The HD image is greyed out and if I place the cursor over it a message appears saying “This volume is not yet available.
There is a spinning wheel in the top right hand corner of the box.
Aware that this is a large upgrade and could be slow, I have left the box and spinning wheel for 7 hours.
    No Change.
I went ‘back’ and opened disk utilities. When I try and verify the disk it reads “Cannot unmount”
I am a retired person and I am begining to think I will die before I can install Tiger.

    Can't you borrow a friend's external drive ?
You could use mine but I live a bit far away (10 hours flight)... unfortunately for you ...
If you have important data on your drive you should anyway consider such an external hard drive for easy, safe and fast backup ! Prices droped significantly and a low capacity (120 gig) external firewire drive shouldn't cost over $100.-- (unlike a computer, they easely fit in a safe when you are away for a long period...)
You could ask someone (reliable) or Apple centre to change the internal drive by remplacing it with a new faster one. This way you may put the old drive in an empty (you should buy an external drive case, I suggest a sarotech FW/USB II and a maxtor drive) case you could use as backup drive.
This solution is a little more expensive but has the advantage of a longer (+/-3 years) factory waranty on the drive ("ready to use" external drives are cheaper but usualy carry only one year waranty).
    Best regards

  • HT1692 Have recently installed itunes and outlook on a new computer.  Have multiple email accounts set up in Outlook tho only use contacts and calendar in relation to one of these. Cannot sync itunes with the correct contacts and calendars, Help!

My new computer is 64-bit running Windows 7 pro, SP1 and Microsoft Office 2010 Pro Plus 32-bit
My phone is a 4S runing iOS 6.1.3
Very frustrated now that I have recently installed itunes and outlook on this new computer.  Everything worked perfectly ok on my laptop which was also 64-bit Windows 7 and running 32-bit Microsoft Office 2010 Pro.  I have multiple email accounts set up in Outlook tho only use contacts and calendar in relation to one of these. Cannot sync itunes with the correct contacts and calendars, when I sync the calendar and contacts are empty.  Not sure if there is any way to point itunes to particular address books and calendars.
I have installed and uninstalled itunes 3 times and thank goodness have a backup
    Can anyone help please?
    thanks in anticipation

I had my home computer set up to sync to work's Exchange server. It worked well, but I didn't like seeing work email messages and other programs trying to sync with my default Outlook folder, which was then the Exchange (& work related) .ost file. I know there are various ways to manage those problems using filters, view, subfolders, etc., but it was a hassle for me. I think it could work well for many other folks.
For now, I have published my work calendar and subscribed to that calendar on my home computer. So I have view only access to my calendar on my home computer (and I can add/edit calendar items on my iPad (or Outlook Web Access) when away from work). This is not quite what I wanted, but it may work.
It almost makes me long for the days when I used my Windows Mobile Treo to sync back and forth between exchange at work and outlook at home (but had many sync conflicts as a result).

  • Problems with a Powermac G4 and OS9

Hi I'm new to the forum and new to Macs so please excuse me if my questions seem a little dumb.
I've just obtained a PowerMac G4 with OS9 that used to belong to a school. The school wiped out all their work but I'm wondering if they've also wiped off something else as I'm having problems getting it to boot.
If I turn the machine on I get an Apple icon then about a minute later I get a prohibitive sign.
The only way to get the machine to boot is to put in the Install CD and power up while holding the 'C' key. Then the system boots up ok and I can abort the install.
My first guess was that perhaps it was trying to boot from a network, so I made sure that the hard drive was the drive to boot from. That made no difference so I ran a repair on the drive but that was to no avail.
Any ideas what the problem could be?
There doesn't seem to be any applications or anything worthwhile keeping on the machine so perhaps it may be easier to reload OS9, if that's the case will I need to input some sort of product key.(is that the correct phrase?)
Problem is I don't know my product key, is it possible to look into the system and find it?
Edit Forgot to mention I have the System Install and System Restore CD's that originally came with the machine.

    Hi, Bob -
From the info you have given, your machine is the G4 (AGP) model, the second model in the early G4 machine series (the first model was the G4 (PCI) machine).
    Boot ROM version $0003.22f1
Yes, you should update the firmware before installing OSX. You can download the applicable updater from a link on this page -
    Article #86117 - Firmware Updates
or directly from this page -
    Article #120068 - G4 Firmware Update 4.2.8
Note that the machine must be booted to OS 9.1 or later (but not OSX) on a writeable local drive in order to install the firmware update. This means it must be booted using an OS 9.1, 9.2.1, or 9.2.2 which has been installed on the hard drive. In addition, the firmware updater itself must be on the same hard drive.
If OS 9 (9.1 or later) is currently available on the drive, you can use it to install the firmware update. If it is not, you will need to install it. The original disk set that came with that machine may have been for OS 8.6, but more commonly is for OS 9.0.x.
If the disk set you have is for OS 8.6, you will need to acquire the use of a retail OS 9.0.4 or later Install CD, install that and update it (via download updater) to OS 9.1.
If the disk set you got with it is for OS 9.0.x, install that and update it to OS 9.1 using the download update for OS 9.1. The updater for OS 9.1 is designed to install on top of any previous version of OS 9.
You can download the update for OS 9.1 from this page -
Article #75103 - Mac OS 9.1 - Download and Info
Since your Software Install CD is in the International English version, be sure to download the OS 9.1 update in that same version; a different language version, such as North American English, will not install on top of the one you have.
In any case, once you have installed the firmware update you can wipe the drive to get rid of OS 9, and then install OSX. The installation of the firmware update changes some of the coding on one or more chips on the main logic board, and is not residual on the hard drive - wiping the hard drive will not undo a firmware update.
    You can then install OSX.
Once the Boot Rom has been upgraded will the machine be able to take a straight OSX load or will it have to be OS9 and OSX ?
You can install OSX directly without needing to have OS 9 on there.
    Built in memory 320Mb RAM
You have sufficient RAM for installing and using OSX 10.4.x. However, since OSX likes a lot of RAM, you should consider adding more RAM. I would recommend at least 256MB more; 512MB would be better. For reference, that machine can hold 2.0GB (2048MB) of RAM in the form of four 512MB modules.
Macs of the vintage of your machine can use only RAM designed for Macs - be sure the place you get it from is savvy to that. Things to look for from vendors of RAM - a no-cost return policy; and a lifetime warranty.
    Suggestions re OSX:
Try to keep at least 5GB of drive capacity unused after OSX and programs have been installed, and documents created. OSX needs that space to use as a memory swap file, for use in its automatic on-the-fly defragmenting routines, and for other purposes.
You can reduce the amount of space the installation of OSX will need. Its default install will install all language versions of that version regardless of your intended usage. You can alter that via a Custom install, choosing only those languages (or just the one language) you will be using. This can reduce the drive space consumed by the installation considerably.
If in the future you find that you need additional drive space, you can replace the internal drive with a larger one; and/or add a second internal drive (that model is pre-equipped to accept a second internal drive); and/or add firewire drives as needed. The max drive size that will be recognized on the internal bus is 128GB; larger drives can be used, but only 128GB will be 'seen'. This 128GB limit does not apply to firewire drives, nor to USB drives (that machine's internal USB is v. 1.1; hence, USB hard drives are generally too slow for use other than as archiving volumes).
The G4 (AGP) model you have is one of the best models of the early G4s (the only better of those is probably the G4 (DA) model). If you find you need more speed, you can get processor upgrades for it from 3rd-party sources; as I recall, one such vendor offered a dual 1.8GHz processor upgrade for it (though this may have changed).

  • MMC Console -- install fails on 64 bit systems (both W7 and VISTA Ultimate)

    Hi all
was trying to install trial version (ABAP) on W7 X-64 bit
MMC snap in console fails to install -- message  SAP MMC snap in
This installation does not support 64 bit  Windows operating systems -- please use the  the corresponding 64 bit version of the installer.
I tried also running in "Compatability mode"  same error.
Since this has to be installed  first  I didn't bother installing the rest.
Any news -- these days 64 bit CPU's are the norm even on smaller laptops so I'm a bit surprised this doesn't work on a 64 bit Windows system.
With a decent amount of RAM in the system I don't won't to be restricted to 3GB on a 32 bit system anymore .
So very surprised here that this doesn't work.
Any news on a 64 bit update.
(It works on the 32 bit version of W7 running under a VM but I really want to run it on a 64 bit system on a physical machine).
    Cheers
    jimbo

Windows has its own list of boot OSs, and default, from msconfig. It will sit and wait for xx-seconds on startup in Windows if you want to boot from an alternate.
As to whether Apple's OS Switcher (aka startup disk bootcamp control panel or tray icon) sees both, I had Windows Home Premium and Ultimate 64, and pretty sure OS X saw both. That was pre-Leopard and before there were 64-bit Apple drivers.
I can't think of any scenerio of wanting to mix 32-bit and 64-bit on the same paritition, you realize you can't install the one over the other and must do a clean install.
When I added a partition out of main partition (I wanted to put search index and page file on their own partition) those partitions aren't seen - are hidden - to Leopard.

  • Can I create a system image with System Image Utility and then transfer the image folder to another server?

I am currently in the process of creating several images to restore for classroom purposes. I am wondering if it is possible to use the System Image Utility on a computer which has Server Admin Tools installed, then transfer that image folder directly to the "NetBoot" folder on our current Apple Netboot Server. Has anyone tried this and/or succeeded? I'd like to get some feedback before attempting it myself on our college's netboot server. Thanks!

We've run into a few problems concerning this process. When we create the image on a seperate machine from the server using SIU and then place it in the NetBoot folder, not every .nbi folder created works properly. We're running into errors that say "Could not find any scan information. The source needs to be imagescanned before it can be restored". This does not happen with every image, but it does happen with computers which have a lot of programs installed on them. Is there a way to imagescan the .nbi folder and/or resolve this issue without going through the process of making a completely new NetRestore image?

  • Had to re-install Tiger, where's my  e-mail, favorites and address book

I've been having issues with my G5 so I thought installing Leopard might help, wrong! I got a blue screen that would never stop. After trying many options, I re-installed 10.4.11. That fixed everything but now I don't have my old e-mail, web favorites or address book and have to reinstall a lot of other 3rd party products. When I installed it, I used archive and install. Preserve users and network setting was not available.
I've looked in "previous system" but I can't find anything.
    What do I do know?

I have the horrible feeling that the aborted Leopard install may have left a mess of your system files. If it was busy archiving them and deleting them from the system when it froze then they may be in Limbo.
In general A&I isn't recommended when upgrading OS, and very likely won't work when downgrading due to the old installer not understanding the formats of the new OS.
I don't use Mail so I don't know how it works. Probably the actual email files are still around somewhere, but you have to recognize them.

  • Install Oracle 11G, RAC with VMWare, APPS R12, and OBIEE on one server?

    Dear Experts,
I'm looking to upgrade my skills, and want to learn more of:
Oracle 11G, RAC, VMWare, APPS R12, and OBIEE
My server has two quad cores (8 CPU altogether) and 16 gigs of RAM.
Years ago, I took a shots at installing RAC on multiple servers and firewire.
One thing I remember was that after I installed RAC, I was not able to use the database unless I enabled all the RAC processes on the server. So, I was not able to just boot the database and use it in the traditional single server manner.
Which I will also want to do.
    1) Does this symptom/aspect/characteristic of RAC install still exist?
    2) Is it realistic to install all this software on one server?
If so, what is the order of operations for the install?
    3) If I have to prioritize, I'd like to install
Oracle 11G, OBIEE, and APPS R12,
Would installing R12 and OBIEE on the same server present any conflicts or issues?
If not, what is the order of operations for the install?
    11G, R12, then OBIEE?
    Thanks a lot!

11G, R12, then OBIEE?There will not be any conflicts. I would suggest you to select vmware or virtual box in order to configure all these sw's.
I have done such a configuration on my laptop with i7 Quad processor, 16GB RAM and 640 GB HDD.
I have Installed 2 node RAC, 2 Node ERP and all are running smoothly without any issues.
