Install to Snow Leopard!
I guess thinking about to install Snow Leopard 10.6 to my Macbook 3,1 But i don't know if my Macbook has those requirements to uppdrage!!

Your MacBook can run Snow Leopard, but you'll have better performance (even with the current version of Mac OS X) if you expand the RAM in the system from 1GB to at least 2GB.

I just purchased a ipad2, it would not work on my MacBook 10.4.1 I purchased and installed OSX snow leopard 10.6.3 downloaded and installed the latest itunes, set up an itunes account, purchased some music and apps. When i plug in my ipod it shows up and works, but when i plug in my new ipad the ipad screen comes up with a display of a cable and itunes but does not show in devises, i have tried all the resets and different USB ports with no success. Any ideas short of selling it on ebay or buying a new computer?
If you've already tried the usual rebooting of the computer and ports and stuff, there is only a few things left I can think of. It's possible that when you updated iTunes it didn't fully replace all the files, so I suggest just manually removing iTunes and then reinstalling it.
Try removing iTunes manually first http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224 then download a fresh copy, make sure it is 10.3.1
It is essential that you go through Finder to remove those files it mentions. Otherwise they won't be reinstalled when you run the installer again. -
How can i do a re-install of snow leopard?
it has been suggested that i do a fresh re-install of snow leopard to remedy my battery issues (extreme drop in charge with sn installation http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10258624). i'm new to macs, so i'm wondering how to go about the re-install. can anyone help?

On the issue of the points system. You don't see a lot of points given. I don't know why those seeking help aren't interested in tossing a carrot to the unpaid Apple helpers. Perhaps Apple could do more to encourage them. Except that users don't play, I think the point system is pretty good. Usually, I think points are given to decent or good solutions and helpfulness. But, you see excellent solutions given by talented individuals, e.g., V.K., totally ignored point-wise on a wholesale basis. -
How can I do a clean install of Snow Leopard with out losing iLife applications?
I bought my Macbook pro in 2009 and am currently running the Leopard software. I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard, but I do not want to lose my iLife applications. I lost the DVD's that came with the computer. Is there any way I can do a clean install of Snow Leopard with out losing my iLife applications?
Will a regular installation of Snow Leopard allow the App store to recognize that my computer has iLife and mark it as a purchased item in my account. If it can, then would I be able to do a clean install and re-download the apps for free.
Any help would be appreciated!1. Install Snow Leopard normally; this will keep the applications intact. An actual clean installation involves either erasing the partition or creating a blank one, and neither of those will carry the applications over.
2. The previous iLife installation won't carry over to the Mac App Store, and the Mac App Store versions are incompatible with Snow Leopard.

Can I do a clean install of Lion, onto my Mac Book Pro4,1, that is currently running 10.5.8? I have seen U-tube videos on how to do a clean install to Snow Leopard, and another from SL to Lion, but can zero out my HD, and do a clean install to Lion?

I had this imac 27" two years back(leopard 10.5.8) and no problem was encountered so far! (thanks 4that),i always made an update as far to snow leopard 10.6.8. Unfortunately when i did some application /downloading,the system was off and when i turn it On the logo of an apple only came.So what i did is to start all over again,now i am two years old back with Leo-10.5.8,My problem is i cannot install my snow leopard,it reads that i have to clean tha disc which i did and thru utility disc.Any help please and i really appreciate to every1 helping me to solve the problem.I will keep in touch.
Many thanks! - AngelBTW,I purchased the SL by retail and originally installed for the first time in my IMAC 27" ,unfortunately during the upgrading of the system,suddenly it was totally gray.then off as it killed my imac.i switch it On but only the apple logo came and waiting for so long.I tried to start from the very beginning,installed the DVD installation that was originally came from imac..it works and i have now the latest version of Leopard 10.5.6...then .8 thru updates. My problem is i cannot re-install my SNOW LEOPARD that i purchased from retail store..proceeded to install in my imac but everytime it ends with 'FAILED-pls clean the disc" i did the cleaning but still the same,:installed failed!-The installer could not copy the necessary support file",i tried booting from the disc holding C down but no luck at all. Had to wipe my drive so I could do a clean install of snow leopard. Now I have look every where on how to move bookmarks, address book and I cal settings. I have them back up on a external drive with Time machine but can not move, copy or restore my old settings. The instructions I have found or no help or needs more clarafication on what to do.

Clean install of Snow Leopard fails
Dear all,
As the title says my current issue is that I'm unable to perform a new installation of Snow Leopard after performing a single-pass secure erase of the Mac partition of my hard drive. However, some background to the problem is probably useful.
My troubles begin after attempting to transfer files from an USB stick to my Macbook pro. Drag/drop or copy/paste in finder resulted in nothing happening. I ejected the USB drive (which flashed to let me know the drive itself thought it had been ejected) however the USB stick did not disappear from Finder. Further attempts to eject the stick using finder did nothing. Attempting to reset Finder produced the well known "The application Finder.app can't be opened. -10810" error (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2135129&tstart=45). After reading through that thread and trying some of the suggestions I eventualy had to resort to a hard reset of my macbook. After restarting the macbook ran very slowly for a couple of minutes before producing the same Finder error as before (though no external drives/devices were involved this time).
After coming up against the same problem again and again I decided to verify and repair the drive using the OS X installation cd that came with my macbook pro. The hard disk itself seemed ok (S.M.A.R.T: verified), which I expected as I have Windows 7 running under bootcamp on a separate partition. (As a quick aside, Windows 7 was and still is running fine, and in fact I could successfully access and open all the files on my Mac partition from within windows. This allowed me to grad up-to-date copies of all my important files before taking more drastic action.) Verifying the mac partition resulted in a message saying the disk needed repairing. Attempting to repair the disk initially resulted in errors saying a clean install was required, though the repair succeeded on my 4th attempt. This repair failed to fix the problem and I was still getting the very slow running leading quickly to the same Finder error.
Eventually i decided my only option was to perform an erase and install of Snow Leopard. Initially I simply erased the partition using Disk Utility after booting from the install disk (default option) and then attempted to install Snow Leopard. The install failed repeatedly, alternating between 'An error has occured in the installation process' and 'Unable to install supprting files' error messages. I also tried repairing the disk after erasing and then installing with the same errors. I then performed a single-pass secure erase on the Mac partition (again from Disk Utility via the startup disk), verified the drive (finding an unassigned node error), successfully repaired the drive (twice, just to make sure) and attempted another installation, which again failed with the 'An error has occured in the installation process' error.
So I currently have a formatted Mac partition which refuses to accept a new Snow Leopard install and a fully working copy of Windows 7 running under bootcamp on a separate partition of the same disk. Is there anything else I can try other than reformating the entire hard drive and losing my bootcamp installation?try this idea: Do a leopard install to an external disk then do a Disk Utility "restore" function to that clean partition. So you restore from the external to the internal partition. Should leave Bootcamp untouched.

Just done a replacement of the pata DVD drive (its new and is working ok), and a fresh clean install of Snow Leopard with all updates, iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately,
I believe its related to overheating ?
iStat Pro shows GPU diode temp at 66 C, CPU at 48 C, Fan rpms is around 1000
Any ideas somebody ?
The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds

I have restored this
from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.

There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.

Help Please! Trying to do a clean install of Snow Leopard on a new drive
I'm trying to help a family member with his Mac Mini.
He installed a new HD and we're trying to do a clean install of Snow Leopard from the DVD. I've tried booting to the DVD by holding the C key during boot up and that does nothing. I've tried mounting his HD on my Macbook and installing that way and that doesn't work either.

I couldn't find anything about installing on another drive. Essentially, you partition it (not necessary for what you want), make an image of the Installer and then restore the image to the external drive. You can then use that drive as the boot drive. That was for Leopard, so I don't know if it will work. -

If you just stuck the disk into the Leopard Mac and run the upgrader, you didn't do a "fresh install" you basically upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6 leaving all the programs and files intact.
The white Snow Leopard disk was the right one for that machine as it had Leopard (10.5) on it previously.

To install Windows into BootCamp, you read and run the BootCamp Assistant located in the Applications > Utiltiies folder
It's important to change the drive format from FAT32 to NTFS before installing Windows using the Windows disk.
Windows is rather complicated to install, if you boot to a blinking line with "press any key to continue" you need to press and hold the power button down and reboot holding the Option/Alt key down to get back into OS X.

The one that came when I bought my Macbook Pro.Kappy, I believe that he's asking about Snow Leopard, not Lion. Your answer would be correct in reference to Lion purchased from the Mac App Store, but not Lion shipped as original OS on a new Mac.
derojas, assuming you have a standard OEM, it-came-with-the-computer Snow Leopard installer, you are licensed to use it only on that one computer. You are not licensed to install it on any others. Many OEM discs can install only on the specific hardware model with which they shipped, anyway.
If you have a standard retail installer, it's technically possible to install it on any Mac capable of running Snow Leopard. However, again, the license grants you the freedom to install it on only one Mac at a time (i.e. you'd have to delete it from one Mac before you could install it on another).
There are family packs and other multi-licensing arrangements that permit the owner to install Snow Leopard on more than one Mac. You need to check the license to find out how many and what other restrictions might apply. -
After clean install of Snow Leopard, Time Machine did not restore all files. When I try to restore these files I get "Not enough disk space" error. What do I need to do to get these important files back onto my Mac from my external hard drive??

For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.
I did the drive replacement myself, got a faster drive of better quality for $300 instead.
Then another time I asked for a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, they wanted to charge $400 + $35 for the labor.
The same RAM is on Crucial.com for $90 and all I need is a 00 micro phillips screwdriver.
So you see what's going on here.
I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine. -
I have problem installing my snow leopard
I have problem installing my snow leopard. it says that installing will continue after restart of my computer. But after it has restared, no installation happened. also it keeps ejecting the cd. What am i going to do? I've tried so many times.
as of now, my OS is 10.5.8. I wanted to upgarde it to 10.6 so that i can install the latest itunes.
But, i cant install my snow leopard. it keeps happening and happening again.
My laptop keeps ejecting the dvd. Sometimes i was able to open the dvd and click install. But after I reached "46 minutes remaining", the window will show that the installation will continue after restarting. and when its restarted, the installation did not continue. and im still with 10.5.8.
What should i do? -

i was wondering if it was anyway possible to Install Lion/Snow Leopard on an external hd so that i could use the external hd as my main hd.Absolutely. This is how I do my upgrades for my MacBooks. I first install to the external drive, and then after I have verified that everything is working I swap the internal and external drives. When the Installer starts, you will have the option to select which disk you want to install on. If the drive is not already set up with a GUID partition table you will have to do that in Disk Utility before you can install Lion on it. During the installation you will have the option to move all your files and settings over from the internal drive.

Lost widgets after clean install of Snow Leopard
Does anyone know how I can restore my widgets (& the info on them, mostly sticky notes)? I did a clean install of Snow Leopard and I was able to pretty much restore everything manually from TIme Machine. I did go into "Users/Library/Widgets" and restore that, but it seems not to have worked, all I get are the 4 default widgtets.
Any ideas? Other than that the install went well.

I had about 10-12 sticky notes with semi-important info on them and it would be nice, but not critical, to have them back. I should have done a screen shot and saved that! I'm wondering if I must first create new, blank stickies first ... which would then take the info?? Seems odd, but who knows.
