Install Ubuntu on a G3 iBook with a failed optical drive via MacBook Pro

I have a G3 iBook that has a failed drive. I want to install Ubuntu on it, but the CD-drive won't read discs anymore.
I do have a MacBook Pro. Is there anyway I can put the Live CD into my MacBook Pro and have the iBook boot from my MacBook Pro's optical drive?

The way I read the Apple Knowledge Base article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303118
That would only work if the iBook, too, is running OS X 10.4. (It may be; but it may not. I take it that it's the MacBook in OS X 10.4.7, Wayland?)
I'm not sure you would have to boot from the Ubuntu disc in order to install from it (never having used Linux). If you do have to boot from the Linux disc, I'm not sure FireWire Target Disk Mode will work at all for this purpose, since FireWire Target Disk Mode is a feature of OS X.
You may want to ask about this in the Unix Forum, Wayland.

  • Installing Ubuntu - Don't own other mac, have no optical drive, don't know login details.

    Hello,
I recently picked up a G5 and don't know the login details.  My aim is to install Ubuntu, but it has no disk drive, and I'm not even sure where to start with an Apple, as I've never owned anything made by Apple in my life.  Is there a way to regain the root pass?  I have no idea what it is.

OK, so I've finally gotten around to working on this.  My machine does actually have the optical drive.
I formatted the main drive and stuck it in there.  I burnt a 11.04 alternate Ubuntu .iso to a dvd with ImgBurn.  Unlocked the server, and started it up.  Using the correct button sequence, I got it so that the lights look like this:
    oooooo
xxxxxo  (o symbolizing which ones are lit)
It's exactly like it's supposed to be to boot from a CD, but every time I do that, it just ejects the CD.  I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

  • I am tryed to install ubuntu 14.4 lts along with windows 8.1 in my HP 2000 - 2d49tu

I am tryed to install ubuntu 14.4 lts along with windows 8.1 in my  HP 2000 - 2d49tu, but ubuntu does not detect windows 8.1 in the system

It is critically important for you to have created Recovery media before attempting to create a dual boot installation. Make sure that it works by performing a Factory Image recovery.
Make sure that the Ubuntu type matches the Windows 8,1 type. That is critical for a dual boot installation.
A 64-bit OS type will see or recognize other 32 and 64-bit operating system.
If you have a 32-bit Ubuntu it will not see Windows 8.1 as being present.
A 64-bit version of Ubuntu will work well with a 64 or 32-bit version of Windows 8.1.

The sound input going to the mic is not going to pipe through the speakers like that.  It doesn't do it because it would cause a feedback loop on itself.  The mic input will take sound and output it to a program or to another pathway (like a VoIP or Facetime call, etc.) but it won't behave like a Karaoke machine if that's what you're thinking.

  • I installed my new iMac with my Macbook Pro 2008 backup and created a network with the iMac and now the Macbook Pro cannot get internet.

I installed my new iMac with my Macbook Pro 2008 back up.  I created a iMac network with Airport extreme, but now my Macbook Pro cannot get internet.  any ideas on why or what to do about it.

    Hello 1BillyMac,
It seems you have a network conflict that isn't allowing your MacBook Pro to connect to the internet. This may be caused by both computers sharing identical network settings. You may want to consider creating a new network location on your MacBook Pro to assign new network settings. The following article will instruct you on how to do that:
OS X Yosemite: Add a network location
A network location is a group of network settings
A network location is a group of network settings for your various network services (Ethernet or Wi-Fi for example).
If you often change network settings, you may find switching between locations quicker and easier than repeatedly modifying individual groups of settings.
For example, you might want to make a location for “home,” where you connect to the Internet with a telephone modem, and a location for “office,” where you connect to your company network and the Internet using Ethernet or AirPort.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Network.
Click the Location pop-up menu, choose Edit Locations, then click Add .
Enter a name for the location, then click Done.
Enter settings for each network connection service you want to use in that location.
After you create your locations, you can switch all of your network settings by clicking the Location pop-up menu and choosing a different location.

  • Installing Panther 10.5 from a dual quad 3.2 tower on Macbook Pro 2.16

Sorry for my ignorance, but I don't want to take a chance of creating issues with my laptop.
I have been doing on location editing with my Macbook Pro 2.16 (with the Intel Chip), that is running on Tiger 10.4, Final Cut Studio 1.
I recently purchased a 3.2 dual Quad tower which shipped with Leopard 10.5, and have upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2.
I want to get the laptop on the same OS and FC Studio version so I can move projects between computers on external hard drives. The tower and laptop are not linked via a network and never will be.
Can I just install the Leopard 10.5 Disk that shipped with the new tower on the Macbook Pro 2.16?
I have heard that the install disk's that come with the computers are specific to that computer.
Can I then install the new upgrade of FC Studio 2 on the MacBook Pro 2.16?
Or will I experience complications that would have been avoided if I had just purchased another copy of the Panther 10.5 OS?
Thanks for any help in trying to avoid issues in the future...
    Bob

To (slightly) expand on what David told you in the other thread ...
    1. The OSX install disks shipped as OEM with computers are not compatible with another model.
    2. One OSX license, one computer.
    3. As David already noted, a laptop and a desktop can share a FCP license as long as you do not use them simultaneously.

I am trying to install a brand new WD 500 gb sata internal hd in my macbook pro. the original install dvd does not recognise the hd. all hardware is ok. any help?

For some reason OS X disks (whatever edition or flavors) that are supplied with Apple products only seem to contain a limited knowledge of available hard drives on the market at the time of thier publishing. This (rather opportunistically) creates a "Best Before" stale-OS X-software-copy situation where upgrading to or replacing a defective internal SATA hard drive with a newer, better or larger one is a largely hit and miss affair.
If you buy the latest and greatest disk drive available for any older Mac you are likely to run into unresolvable problems making a clean re-install of your own, old edition or flavor of OS X onto any newer or larger hard drive since the OEM (gray) "OS X Install Disks" that Apple supply with retail products seem to contain only time-sensitive lists/mapings of then-known target drives that the Drive Management Tool in the then-published old "Installer Software" will support.
Presumably new (colorful "X") retail versions of OS X (10.whatever.whatever) also contain time-limited Installers with limited knowledge of and adaptability to/compatability with a limited number of old hard drives then kicking-around on the market.
This is especially a problem nowadays since the countless "puny old" hard drives that have been on the market are largely obsolete in a few months time, as manufacturers continue to produce larger and cheaper units, discontinuing older puny products... So if your drive fails you need an exact old (or similar familial) replacement drive for your "backup copy of OS X" to do a fresh, clean OS X re-install. Otherwise you need to purchase a new retail version of OS X, since yours is now effectively obsolete. Purchasing an old, puny drive to re-install your version.flavor of OS X to avoid buying a new version of OS X is a rather false economy.
If you still have a working old hard drive with your old polluted 10.version.flavor of OS X still working on it you apparently must clone it with Time Machine or the newest version of Disk Utility (disk image copying) to most newer, larger drives, and a clean reinstall to such new hard drives is not possible.

  • Upgrading to 10.6 with half working optical drive from a 2nd working mac

    State: Enabled
I'd like to know, short of replacing the optical drive, whats is the best way to upgrade to snow leopard 10.6 since it won't read the dvd instal disc. I have access to a buddy's 2009 mac book with a working optical drive. In the instructions of the 10.6 manual it says this can be done but the machines have to be on the same network in which case how do i do that or can this be done in an easier way, without incurring aditional cost? thank you for any help

Take your disc over to your friend's house. Meanwhile get yourself an 8 GB USB flash drive. Clone the DVD to the flash drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Take the flash drive to your computer and boot it with the flash drive:
Booting From a USB Flash Drive
    1. Insert the flash drive in a USB port.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" button.
    4. Select the flash drive's icon from the display in the startup manager.
    5. Click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Destination means the USB flash drive.
    Source means the installer disc.

Need help with my iPhone 5 and my Macbook Pro.  I was purchased some music on itunes at my mac. • What are the common problems with the 15 inch 2.16 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo?

I have been reading in the forum and have noticed that some of the MBP C2D have a few problems (wireless, screen, etc). I just want a list of things to look for if I get one. I have learned from the past to get it fixed fast, or else Apple does not prioritize it as well. Thank you.

    got mine in october.
imo(and other pc converts as well) it hardly lives up to the hype+pricetag.
First/second/third iteration...it runs hot and slow.
Compared to what? Any other macs? Can't say. Compared to my experiences with other pc notebooks...that's where I'm coming from.
Author was looking for feedback from MBP owners.
    2cents submitted.
Author didnt specify..'issues with MBP as compared to other Apple computers', I don't think anyway.
A company makes a major shift with it's hardware, and expects the software that pre-exists will smoothly transition...is a rush job if you ask me.
I just feel it would have been better, having been released with a FULLY compatible os.
    cheers

  • Possible to swap ibook G4 dvd drive into macbook pro?

My unibody macbook pro's dvd drive has stopped working. Whenever i put in a dvd in, it just gurgles and tries to churn the disk to no avail. I was wondering if it were possible to harvest the dvd drive out of my old ibook g4 and put it into the macbook pro.

AFAIK, the drives are of a different height...thus that iBook drive won't fit.
