Install/Uninstall OS X Tiger components

I realise that I can uninstall a compononent of OS X like iCal by dragging it into the Trash. But then is there a way to just re-install iCal if I realise that I need it and I have emptied my trash? Coming from a windows user is there a way to install/uninstall components of OsX e.g. is there way a to uninstall OSX's language support and reinstall later?
My 2nd OSX DVD has an option to purely reinstall extra/bonus software like OmniGraffle
Thanks

The mac does not have an equivalent add/revove software control panel that is found on windows. This is because it is not needed on a mac as you can normally just drag an app to the trash when you want to remove it. There are no dll's to amend or registry entries to amend etc.
That being said to reinstall individual apps from your tiger install disk you need to use a 3rd party utility called Pacifist or diggging around the disk in your terminal. Pacifist is the easier method.

With the Error 2, let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3 freezing from Archive Install of Leopard from Tiger

Just archived and installed Leopard from Tiger 10.4.10 and on all our Macs, but our only PPC system is having serious issues. The system boots up fine, faster than before, however the Finder and desktop freeze when booting into any of the two user accounts. Applications run from the dock, but the Menu Bar isn't loading fully (airport, bluetooth, clock, etc don't load). I have run Activity Monitor from the Dock and systemuiserver and finder both freeze. I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM, and in the one instance I was able to get into the files I deleted the systemuiserver and powermanagement plist's.
Upon many hours of research with Apple and at home, nothing seems to be the solution. If I can't resolve this I may have to install a copy of Tiger (or Leopard) on an external HDD, boot and attempt data recovery from the main HDD (if nothing is locked) as a lot of Quicken 2007 files are needed and perform a clean install. If any one is able to give any help I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
Also, the Power Mac G5 is Dual 2.3 late 2005 model (specs: http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G5_Late2005.html ), with 1 GB RAM, ViewSonic VGA monitor, NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, Airport + Bluetooth, and wired keyboard and mouse. Thanks again!

So, would you recommend to people having this same system (as I do) to wait for installing Leopard or maybe to take some precautions?
    I would either:
    A) Wait until 10.5.1 has been released (which may address such issues)
    B) Take serious precautions. Back everything you need onto a separate HD and perform a clean install (which formats your HD), then move everything copied back into the system to ensure no data is lost and nothing corruptible is carried over into Leopard.
Performing the clean install seemed to take care of any conflicts and issues, but means more time will be spent manually backing up and reloading all personal data.
Hope this helps and good luck.

  • Can I install Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 on a dell Optiplex Gx280?

Hi! I have a couple of questions which I can't seem to find the answers too.
    1) Can I install Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 on a Dell Optiplex GX280?
    2) Can I take the HDD from the aforementioned Dell and place it in my Power Mac G4 Digital Audio? If so, will Tiger still be on it?
    3) If I can't install Tiger on my Dell, can I rip the DVD drive out and use that to install?
    4) HDD's don't have to be Mac specific, do they?
Thank you for your valuable time,

  • Error trying to install/uninstall iTunes

I recently got the new iPod 5th gen and I need to update my iTunes in order to put my music on it.
However, when I go to install/uninstall iTunes the same error message comes up saying:
    And upon trying again/browsing:
I've tried various step by step walkthrough's off of the internet but none of them are doing anything.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Quicktime errors during install, uninstall, or run

Quicktime errors during install, uninstall, or run. No error code. It just says it encountered an error and must exit.

I located a previous response that satisfied my issue. Below is the process that allowed me to use quicktime.
The "fatal error" in this context has (recently) been indicating trouble with old, misplaced QuickTime componentry lurking about in your system.
(Whether or not the message is a symptom of that problem seems to depend on what version of old misplaced stuff is lurking and what version of QuickTime proper we're trying to install or uninstall ... but in recent times, there's been an uptick in fatal errors being caused by that.)
So let's try investigating that possibility first.
First we'll adjust some view settings on the PC.
    1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
    2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now in "My Computer" open Local Disk C: (or whichever drive your operating system is installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "System32" folder.
What files or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file or folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • Server manager hangs on collecting data, i can't install/uninstall any applications, mmc works on random, no errors in any logs

Hi, ive been searching around for for 4-5 hours on google and here and I'm turning a bit desperate
I rebooted the server today, and after that it just hangs on collecting data, mmc stuff works on random, I got evenviewer open, and checked system and application, but it only showed exchange alerts etc, according to itself, everything is fine, which is it not, I can't goto control panel, can't install/uinstall software, cant run windows update, can't connect via RDP etc.
I tried misc solutions I found, like this
    1. Click Start->Run...->type msconfig and press Enter
    2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable All third party Services.
    3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items
    4. Click OK and choose Restart
but msconfig just hangs when I click OK.
    server is a DL380G5 with 64 bit

    Hi,
First I would like to confirm the following points:
    1.    Had any changes been made on the computer before the issue began to occur, such as an installation or upgrade?
    2.    Does any error message appear or does it just hang when opening Control Panel, install/uninstall software, run Windows Update, connect RDP?
    3.    Have you installed any anti-virus programs on the computer?
First let’s delete the Server Manager cache files in C:\Windows\System32\ServerManager\Cache.
If it still hangs, I suggest booting into Safe Mode.
Please restart the computer, keep pressing F8 and enter Safe Mode.
Does the hanging issue also occur in Safe Mode? If not, let’s try the steps below in Safe Mode again:
    1. Click Start->Run->type msconfig and press Enter.
    2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable All third party Services.
    3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items.
    4. Click OK and choose Restart.
What’s the result in Normal Mode now?
If the issue persists, please boot into Safe Mode and run your anti-virus programs perform a complete virus scan.
If the issue still occurs after scanning for viruses, please send the System Inforamtion to me for further research:
    1. Press Start, type in msinfo32 in the Start Search bar and then press Enter.
    2. Choose Save from the File menu and save it as an NFO file.
    3. Find the file, right-click on this file, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder".
    4. Upload the compressed file to me from the following site:

  • CS1 Install/Uninstall Problems ?

I can't uninstall CS1, nor can can I reinstall Photoshop from CS1, which is presently not installed. My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium. I am out of warranty and Adobe will not provide suppport. I have read all I can find about FLEXnet licensing suspecting there is a connection. When I try to either install or uninstall CS1, I get an error message from Microsoft saying that "Adobe CS1 installer has stopped working". There is no other information unless I open the Adobe File folder for Photoshop from CS1 that I saved to my desktop. I can initiate the install procedure from that folder, but when prompted for the original product serial number a message states that the serial number I have provided is invalid. I have talked with Adobe however, and their records indicate that I have a valid serial number.
I have gone to "Services" using the administrative tools in the control panel and tried setting FLEXnet Licensing on manual,  then on automatic, and finally disabling it temporarily. I have gone to the Start Up menu on the desktop and entered "msconfig" in the search box and gone to services where FLEXnet was at first "stopped" and is now "running".
On some forums there are recommendations to first copy and save FLEXnet to another area of the hard drive, then delete it altogether from its original location, and then uninstall ALL Adobe software in the computer before reinstalling everything. Other contributors strongly caution the removal of FLEXnet, and some users have complained of ongoing problems after deleting FLEXnet. Firstly, I'm not sure I can figure out how  to copy and save FLEXnet to another drive, and secondly I'm afraid of the possible results. Even if I can accomplish those tasks I don't know if that procedure will then allow me to either uninstall the portion of CS1 still in my computer, or reinstall the Photoshop that presently won't install. By the way, all the CS1 programs that remain in my computer are operational. Photoshop is the only missing component.
I am not well versed in technology, and much that I read in the forums is only partially comprehensible to me. If you have the patience and knowledge to help me unravel this mess I would love your help. Thanks. Harrison

Thank you Bob. It was very nice of you to write. I have been using CS1 with Vista since Vista came out. I'm aware that compatibility is considered a significant issue. Fortunately, I never had any problems until now, although I would have replaced CS1 with a more recent and compatible version if money were not part of the equation for me.
Adobe told me that if I bought the CS5 they would help me straighten out any issues now caused by the CS1, but otherwise they would not help. I did not think to ask if Adobe has designed CS5 to be compatible with Vista, but I will. I may buy the more recent version out of necessity, but it does not seem unreasonable to me that Adobe should help someone with a valid serial and registration number access their software regardless of warranties. The problem at hand seems to be a glitch in the licensing application provided by FLEXnet that I presume protects Adobe from unauthorized use of their products. I am wondering how much this situation actually has to do with system compatibility, given that I have been using the software for roughly two years with Vista, or whether it is simply that Adobe's FLEXnet licensing shield can work against legitimate users under certain circumstances. Adobe did not mention FLEXnet to me, but I would like to know one way or the other if FLEXnet is at the core of the problem.
Thank you again Bob for writing. I may wipe my OS clean and reload everything. I suspect the CS1 might work then, but I do realize that CS1 is old by technological standards, in spite of the fact that I would gladly continue to use it. I am among those people that find the cost of keeping current very difficult, and I find it exasperating that so many products and services become obsolete very rapidly when considering their relative cost. Have a nice weekend.
    Best Regards,
    Harrison

  • EventHandler, install/uninstall in succession or not

Sorry to bother again, but now I have an architectural question regarding Visa event handlers. I like to react to SRQs several times during the life time of my instrument object, everytime in a different manner. Should I install and uninstall an event handler for each time, or keep it installed and handle the events, which I have to handle each time in a different manner, in that one event handler, which would then call the actual event processing routines according to a state machine variable? The first approach is more elegant, but is there a hardware performance issue? I guess, software performance on a Pentium isn't one.

    Gunni:
Ah, the elegance vs. functionality tradeoff. Rest assured that either approach can work fine but each has its pros and cons.
I would definitely say the traditional approach would be to install a single handler once for a given session, then handle the events based on what you are doing at the moment.
Rather than using a global variable, 1 way to keep the information more local might be to call "sess.SetAttribute (VI_ATTR_USER_DATA,value);". I'll admit to not remembering the exact syntax but I'm pretty sure that's about right. Then in your callback you can do "sess.GetAttribute(VI_ATTR_USER_DATA,&value);" and know your session's state information. Remember that this can hold any 32-bit value, including a pointer if you cast it appropriately.
On the other hand, if you want to install/uninstall a handler appropriate for the given task, make sure you remember to call EnableEvent after installing your handler (since the previous uninstall will automatically call DisableEvent). Also, make sure you install and enable just before setting up the instrument to generate an SRQ in order to avoid any race conditions. This may make the handler more elegant but potentially clutters your other code.
My recommendation would be to use the first method (always keep it installed). If a big switch statement in the handler is unappealing, try this. Make all your actual event processing routines take the same parameter list, and just set the VI_ATTR_USER_DATA value to the function pointer of the routine. Then the handler can just invoke the function pointer (with the appropriate parameters) instead of doing a switch. This will likely require that the actual event processing routines be non-member functions, and I'm pretty sure they can't be virtual ones, since you can never get a direct pointer for these.
I hope this gives you more insight into your various options. Again, it really doesn't matter too much because any of these ought to work.
