Install/Uninstall process stalling ""libsmime3.dylib is in use"!?

Hi Team
Im working on my Macbook running OS X 10.5.8. Since I can remember I have been using Thunderbird & Firefox as my stock Mail Client & Browser.
I had some problems with my Firefox browser so decided to remove the Application Files and re-install.
I can install Firefox without issue but when I open it up a "Alert" box pops up stating...
''Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features.''
I click okay and Firefox starts but I cannot access any pages. I try to start in "Safe Mode" but again nothing seems to work.
So again I figure remove or "Move to Trash" all the Application Files but I am unable to remove all files because I get the following errors from the trash can for these files...
"The operation cannot be completed because the item "libsmime3dylib" is in use."
The same error pops for these files too...
"libplds4.dylib"
"libplc4.dylib"
"libnssutil3.dylib"
"libnss3.dylib"
"libbspr4.dylib"
I try and search in Spotlight for these files no no results are returned.
I hope I have provided enough information for you to investigate & help.
Keep up the good work.
All the best, Kriss

I had the same problem sudo killall did work, but the process was respawning way too faster. So I did the following and it worked, using FF4, awesome BTW.
while [ true ]; do sudo killall vpnagentd; sleep 1; done

  • Firefox won't insall into my applications folder. Says can't install because libsmime3.dylib is in use. I am running Mac Os 10.6.7 on a Macbook Pro. I can run firefox okay from the disk image but just won't install into the apps folder.

My system is a Macbook Pro running Mac Os 10.6.7 with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram. The upgrade downloads fine, but when I try to drag the firefox image onto my appication folder, I get a dialogue box that says...Cannot install application because "libsmime3.dylib" is in use. I can run Firefox fine from the disk image.

Nope---didn't work. I've owned Macs for about 12 years so although I am brain dead on some things, I do have a working knowledge on most things. I only say that to say this--I did try holding down the mouse and choosing empty trash. It asks if I want to permanently delete what's in there. I say yes--and then I get the same identical message again-----'The operation can't be completed because the item "Firefox 8.0.1.dmg" is in use I can then click stop, or continue.' So apparently that complains the same way it does if I click it up on the menu :)))
As for item owned by---that's not an issue and isn't coming up. User is not a problem either as I am the only user on this system. There is only ONE file in my trash at the moment at that is this dmg file. Nothing Mac. Nothing owned by anyone other than Firefox. The problem seems to be that the dmg file and the original 4.0 FF file are working in tandem with each other--even though I have already drug the new 8.0 globe into the Apps folder and it updated the FF app with the new stuff. If I could force the dmg file to go away, I would do so, but at every turn the system is telling me it can't be done because it seems to think that dmg file is in use---even though everything is shut down and/or ejected. Hey--I'm getting ready to head out and won't be back till evening. I'll check back in this evening. Thank you again for your help.

  • Firefox is unable to update to 7.0.1. I get an error that The operation can't be completed because the item "libsmime3.dylib" is in use. I found this is a Cisco folder, tried to trash it, but it won't leave. Maybe I need it?

The operation can’t be completed because the item “libsmime3.dylib” is in use.
This is the error message I get when i try to install the 7.0.1 update. I found a cisco folder on my MAC and tried to Trash it. It won't leave. Maybe I need it... Some of it did Trash, but what ever is left continues to prevent 7.0.1 from installing.

OK I looked at an old Apple forum and someone suggested Trash then Restart then Empty Trash, and it worked. Cisco is gone, Opt is gone, and I was able to load FireFox. I had to give admin passwords to do this too. Why an old weird game or library folder could cause such obstacles is a wonder. But I'd rather wonder about other things...

  • Error message: libsmime3.dylib is in use and will not allow update

I tried to download the new firefox 5.0, for Mac OS10
when I put it into the application folder the error message showed up:
libsmime3.dylib is in use and would not allow new version to replace old
I have restarted the computer several times and still the same

I found [http://siliconchaos.blogspot.com/2010/08/installing-firefox-4-beta-2-error-on.html this blog post] when trying to look up that error. Looks like a common cause of the error is programs like Evernote, Dropbox or Cisco's AnyConnect VPN Client. Try disabling those (the blog post has instructions) if a simple delete/replace doesn't help.

  • Upon updating to firefox 6, I get the error message "cannot update because 'libsmime3.dylib' is in use" Now firefox cannot start because it is partially updated and non-functional.

Firefox fails to open, now that it has been partially updated. I have quit all applications and restarted, trying to run the install again as the first thing when the computer comes up. Mac version is OS X 10.5.8.

  • I can't load 3.6.12 version because I get this: libsmime3.dylib is in use. What does this mean?

After repeated suggestions that I download the new version of Firefox, I did and now it won't let me put it in applications because "this is in use": libsmime3.dylib . What is this and how do I close it?

    * Download a new copy of the Firefox program: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re)install.
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded.

  • Multiple flash install/uninstall process spawning

Has anyone else had the problem of multiple Flash installer/uninstaller processes running that cannot be killed?
Image Name                                              PID      Session     Name Session#    Mem Usage     Status
    FlashUtil32_11_6_602_171_ActiveX.exe 3884     Console                          1     8,012 K           Running
Removing, reinstalling , updating flash didnt fix the issue.

    I found my own fix.
    Go to :-
    C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash
Rename the file extension on "  FlashUtil32_*Adobe Version*ActiveX  " from .exe to .txt
I tired this on two different machines running different versions of Flash ,one on 12.*** and one on  11.***
    It worked on both.

I want to download newest firefox but it won't let me a) download it and b) uninstall firefox 3.6 it keeps telling me libsmime3.dylip is currently in use. I'm on the verge of formatting my entire computer and just never using it again, please help.
Also it won't let me install newer versions when I try saying libsmime3.dylib is in use etc

  • "libsmime3.dylib" in use blocks deleting Firefox from Trash

Tried to install the new download of Firefox 3.6.16
When I did, it said it couldn't install because the libsmime3.dylib was in use.
I trashed the Firefox application and profiles folder by dragging box into the Trash.
But when I go to empty trash, the Firefox application will not delete and the same message comes up "libsmime3.dylib" is in use. And then when I click "continue," three of four more "lib" files come up as in use. That leaves Firefox application still in Trash, and I can't install a new version.
    Help, please...

If you use cisco anywhere connect VPN, you might want to check here:

Or try opening terminal and typing: '''sudo killall vpnagentd'''

  • Why does it takes so long to install/uninstall CS3 versions?

Hi, i'd like to know why since CS3 releases, not only with
dreamweaver, the install/uninstall process take an eternity!,
before you ask: now i'm in a brand new laptop dual core 2.5 with
6mb of cache, 3 gig ram, xp, all clean all tweaking as always and
    no background programs running.
an eternity is about more than an hour. but if a install any
cs2 versions the install process concludes in less than 2
    minutes....
    so:
why takes so long? what is the installer/uninstaller doing?
    thanks a lot :)

    From my notes:
    CS3

    26 minutes to install.

In comparison, on the Vista machine, MS Office 2007 takes 8

  • When I try to reinstall Firefox (as suggested because it now crashed upon trying to open) it says it can't do so because "libsmime3.dylib is busy".

This happened yesterday pretty soon after I'd done my weekly computer restart, and updated a bunch of add ons recommended by Firefox. I've tried numerous times to restart with no success. (I put at the end the error message). I try to follow the suggestion to reinstall and get the message it can't do so because "libsmime3.dylib is busy" I search for libsmime3.dylib but can't find it.

I have tried everything I could to fix this, but some things require actually being on Firefox, and since I cannot get on, I cannot click on the tabs to do it. I have even totally uninstalled firefox, and that has not fixed this. I still get the same message that firefox is running and I need to close it or restart (which I have also tried dozens of times). I have removed things like Java, and that has not helped either. If I cannot even get on line in firefox, how can I fix this. I am not crazy about using internet explorer, but right now, it is my only option. I even tried to start in safe mode, and the same message box pops up!

FireFox can't open lots of files it isn't suposed to. DMG is opened by the Mac osx as a virtual volume file you just drag the FireFox icon to where you want it installed. Check your desktop for a FireFox volume... like a drive. Double click the DMG file if it is not there. This is how Mac works it has nothing to do with FireFox, many apps install this way!

  • Quicktime errors during install, uninstall, or run

Quicktime errors during install, uninstall, or run. No error code. It just says it encountered an error and must exit.

I located a previous response that satisfied my issue. Below is the process that allowed me to use quicktime.
The "fatal error" in this context has (recently) been indicating trouble with old, misplaced QuickTime componentry lurking about in your system.
(Whether or not the message is a symptom of that problem seems to depend on what version of old misplaced stuff is lurking and what version of QuickTime proper we're trying to install or uninstall ... but in recent times, there's been an uptick in fatal errors being caused by that.)
So let's try investigating that possibility first.
First we'll adjust some view settings on the PC.
    1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
    2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now in "My Computer" open Local Disk C: (or whichever drive your operating system is installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "System32" folder.
What files or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file or folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)
