Install VMPlayer 6.0.3

Hi there, I am new to arch linux. I tried and successfully installed arch linux in my notebook.
After that, I tried to install VMPlayer 6.0.3, all good after applying patch.
But today I removed VMPlayer by an accident, when I tried to re-install it, I encountered a lot of problem, like
1) cannot stop vmware service when trying to compile drivers; (I put "exitcode=0" in all places to let it go through)
2) while compiling, a lot of error
3) depmod fail after compiling.
I tried hard and all problem were solved by "pacman -S linux linux-headers", but I've installed these 2 packages already...
Anybody know why I must re-install these 2 packages to complete my installation?
Thanks!

hello brooklyngirl
you say that you are still using iphoto 2. you have to have iphoto 6 installed before you can download version 6.0.3. the only way to get iphoto 6 is to buy it. that is buy the ilife'06 package. once you install it then and only then will you get the update. sorry this is the way it has to be.

Just installed VMPlayer via the following link:

gcc and kernel headers must be installed.
    I installed via:
    pacman -S base-devel
It appeared to install everything, however I still get the error.
    I checked this link:

  • NI Elvis and vmplayer 2.0.2 on linux

    Hi all,
Okay I have a Fedora 5 Linux Dell Optiplex GX620 workstation where I installed VMplayer 2.0.2 so that I could install the LabView 8.5/NI Elvis 3.0.1 using the NI USB-6251 DAQ.  Everything installs without any issues yet when I attempt to run NI Elvis the calibration window pops up and the Windows session blue screens and reboots.  Has anyone got this combination to work?
    Cheers
    Jason

I'm aware that NI Elvis isn't supported by Linux and thus I'm not using it under linux.  I have recently solved my own problem.  I am now using NI Elvis on my linux workstation.  How did I do it you ask?  Well as my subject line describes I installed a package on my linux workstation called vmplayer.  It's free from:
    http://www.vmware.com/download/player/player_reg.html
This package allows you to install windows as a virtual machine under linux.  The nice thing is you can setup the drive, install all the applications and then turn the drive into a non-persistant mode.  Thus the local C: drive is read only.  You can make changes to the drive while your using it but when you shut down the vmplayer and restart the application all changes are lost.  This is GREAT for keeping your drive in a golden state.  I use network shares and mount a home directory that I keep persistant files in.
vmplayer will give you access to all the external ports on the computer.  My problem was that I loaded the linux kernel module ehci_hcd which supports USB 2.0.  Yet for whatever reason NI Elvis crashes when this is loaded.  So I simply issued the command:
    #/sbin/rmmod ehci_hcd
Now when I connect the NI USB DAQ vmplayer connects to it through the kernel module uhci_hcd which is for the USB 1.1 standard.  Everything now works and NI Elvis doesn't crash.  I'm now using the NI Elvis under Windows XP under VMPlayer on a Linux workstation and it works great!!!
This should debunk the "NI Elvis doesn't work under Linux" comments now.  It's all in how you setup your workstation.

  • Player on WD2 Black (Dual Drive) unable to access 2nd partition

    Host OS : Win 7 Pro (x64)
    Guest OS: XP Pro (x86)
I had a regular (mechanical) 500 GB hard drive (2 partitions OS and DATA) with W7P (x64) and VM Player 3.x running XPP for years with no problem.
I could access the 2nd partition through the Guest OS and modify/save files etc on it.
I just got a new WD2 Black Dual Drive (120GB SSD and 1TB mechanical in one unit) so technically there are 2 partitions on the drive.
I copied the entire Player (data) folder from the old drive to the new. I installed the same version of Player 3.x and tried to access the Guest OS - I am able to access it but unable to access network or usb drives (keep getting errors as it boots up also) etc.
So I started from scratch on new drive - installed vmplayer 3.x (even tried every version upto v 7.1.0) and installed Guest OS (XPP) again and now I am able to access the network and usb drives etc.
But when I add the 2nd partition in the settings and start the player I get an error that it cannot start because it cannot power up the scsi (2nd partition) drive and it shuts down.
If I remove the 2nd partition from settings it boots up fine.
I am able to access the 2nd partition in W7P with no problems.
In the Guest OS I am not able to access the 2nd partition.
I called WD Support and they said to call VMWARE support and the problem has nothing to do with the physical drive.
I have updated all the VMware tools (as recommended) but still not able to access the 2nd partition.
In W7P I had to install a "driver" software to access the 2nd partition. I tried to install the same thing in the Guest OS (XPP) it starts to install and then comes back and says it cannot see the 2nd partition.
Any help in this would be greatly appreciated as I would like to keep all the documents/data on the 2nd partition and be able to access the same from both the HOST and GUEST OS's without having to create duplicates or transfer them back and forth between the two.

OK FaiyazR, I think I see your core question.
When you first create a VM the only "disk" it knows is the virtual one.
If you want to access the physical disk or just specific files on the physical disk, you will have to set up a "Shared Folder". Here is one way to do it:
    While in VM Player:
Go to the "Player" button(screen upper-left)
    Select "Manage"
    Select "Virtual Machine Settings"
In the popup window select "Options"
In the "Options" menu select "Shared Folders"
    Click enabled
Click "Map as a network drive in Windows guests"
Click the "Add..." button which brings up the Shared Folder Wizard
Enter the "Host Path" to the partition (or folder) you wish to share. Repeat for next partition (or folder).
    Hope this helps.

It's a long leap from Microsoft touting their latest and greatest by saying that "many" applications can easily run on 7, to expecting any particular non-MS product to run on it. Especially when the vendor of said non-MS product specifically says the product is not certified for Win7.
    Thanks
Best RegardsI would second what the others said. If this is for you own study ...
    1) install VMPlayer (free)
    2) in VMplayer ,create a virtual linux box, using Oracle Enterprise LInux (free)
    3) on that virtual linux box, install Oracle (free)

Does there exist any free light versions of Oracle Database? Theer is MSDE for SQL Server just wondered if there was similar for Oracle

Take a moment to actually read the license agreement when you download. XE is the usual "personal" version and is probably pretty good from an apps view, but if you want to study from a DBA view, I'd get the full enterprise edition. I have a full virtual oracle lab running on my WinXP laptop, it is fully legal, and it cost me nothing.
Download and install VMplayer from VMware (free)
Download Oracle Linux from Oracle. (free. You only pay if you want support)
    Create a virtual linux server
Download Oracle Enterprise Edition (free for personal study) and install it on the virtual Linux server.
This setup will give you a much more realistic environment in which to hone your DBA skills.

  • Vmware not working

I installed Vmplayer followed Arch wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vmware) to install the VMplayer, but it's not working.
then I followed this too solve this problem https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1324711
    Starting VMware services:
       Virtual machine monitor                                             done
       Virtual machine communication interface                     done
VM communication interface socket family                  done
       Blocking file system                                                  done
       Virtual ethernet                                                         done
       VMware Authentication Daemon                                 done
So i thought everything is now working but still i can not connect to wired network
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p1322629 i followed this link too but no solution !!!
Still i can not ping to my loopback, for the same vmdk in ubutnu everything is working.
Problem is that i can see all te services are running. from vmware i can not ping to 127.0.0.1 (lo)
    says network is unreachable.
and when i try to ping own interface (eth0) from vmware this also not happening. no replies. but same vmdk is working for ubuntu.

    stonecrest wrote:Yes, and the PKGBUILD works;
You'd rather say "I, myself, me, thinks it works".
Because it does not work for many people, including me.
The modules do build with kernel 2.6.22.X, but the network behaviour using bridged networking is extremely clumsy (used to work fine with 2.6.21.X), and shared folders are a pain in the butt- for example whenever I try to copy a file from the guest to a host shared folder, the guest OS (winXP) comes close to totally freezing, and I have to kill explorer to stop the transaction.
    Do you call THAT "works"?
IMO the issues with kernel 2.6.22 won't be addressed before a new VMWare version is out... Until then, yeah... the old version/PKGBUILD works...
I'm close to ditching VMWare in favour of VirtualBox, but a couple of VMWare features (mainly related to low level hardware access) still prevent me from doing so.

Thank youLike everything else, the answer is "it depends".
What is your background and experience with computers, networks, operating systems, programming languages?
    What are you currently doing?
What formal and or on the job training have you had?
As Aman said, build yourself a test system and play with it. You can do this at no cost by ...
    1) download and install VMplayer (vmware.com). It is legally free. For an investment in your career of about US$185, you can buy VMworkstation, which has the same fundamental capability plus some nice management features.
    2) download and install Oracle Enterprise Linux (oracle.com). It is legally free. If you want a support contract, you pay for that.
    3) using (1) and (2) create a virtual linux server
    4) download and install Oracle Enterprise edition database (oracle.com). It is legally free for personal eduction.
    5) install (4) on (3).
Beyond the above questions I have some boilerplate replies that fit here . . .
if people want to be professionals in ANY field, the first knowledge they need to acquire is how to locate AND USE+ the fundamental reference materials for that profession. And the most important trait, the one for which they are really hired, is the ability to do independent research, and having a modicum of curiosity that would drive one to do that research. We don't mind helping newbies, and even the most experienced person on this board will run into something they are not familiar with, or occasionally just require a second set of eyes to look at something. But a professional+ needs, above all, a willingness and capability to check the docs. A professional isn't necessarily someone who has all the answers at their fingertips or has a full understanding about every arcane subject in their field. It certainly isn't someone who has an encyclopedia full of memorized answers but little understanding of how it all fits together. It's someone who knows where to find the answers when needed, how to recognize them when he sees them. It's less about knowing than it is about attitude. Everything you asked can be answered in the Oracle Concepts Manual at tahiti.oracle.com. You should bookmark that site.
    =================================================
Learning how to look things up in the documentation is time well spent investing in your career. To that end, you should drop everything else you are doing and do the following:
    Go to tahiti.oracle.com.
Drill down to your product and version.
    <b><i><u>BOOKMARK THAT LOCATION</u></i></b>
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what is available here. Take special note of the "books" and "search" tabs. Under the "books" tab you will find the complete documentation library.
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what <b><i><u>kind</u></i></b> of documentation is available there by simply browsing the titles under the "Books" tab.
Open the Reference Manual and spend a few minutes looking through the table of contents to get familiar with what <b><i><u>kind</u></i></b> of information is available there.
Do the same with the SQL Reference Manual.
Do the same with the Utilities manual.
You don't have to read the above in depth. They are <b><i><u>reference</b></i></u> manuals. Just get familiar with <b><i><u>what</b></i></u> is there to <b><i><u>be</b></i></u> referenced. Ninety percent of the questions asked on this forum can be answered in less than 5 minutes by simply searching one of the above manuals.
Then set yourself a plan to dig deeper.
    - Read a chapter a day from the Concepts Manual.
    - Take a look in your alert log. One of the first things listed at startup is the initialization parms with non-default values. Read up on each one of them (listed in your alert log) in the Reference Manual.
    - Take a look at your listener.ora, tnsnames.ora, and sqlnet.ora files. Go to the Network Administrators manual and read up on everything you see in those files.
    - When you have finished reading the Concepts Manual, do it again.
Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.

  • Trying to install Vmware Player on OEL 4-kernel 2.6.9-78.0.0.0.1.ELhugemem

    All
I need to run a preconfigured Vmware VM on one of ours Enterprise Linux servers. I've already installed VMware-Player-3.1.2-301548.i386.bundle on the machine, no error message, but now when I try to run vmplayer I am getting the following message:
before you can run vmware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel:
    kernel headers 2.6.9-78.0.0.0.1.ELHugemem
kernel headers for version 2.6.9-78.0.0.0.1.ELHugemem were not found...
I've already searched both on google and on Oracle website for a package containing this version of kernel headers, but didn't find them.
I've did an up2date -i kernel-devel, some kernel headers got installed, but it seems they are at the wrong version:
    [root@dscdap01 ~]# ls -la /usr/src/kernels/
    total 24
    drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Nov 2 06:59 .
    drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Dec 4 2008 ..
    drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 4096 Nov 1 09:42 2.6.9-89.31.1.0.1.EL-hugemem-i686
    drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 4096 Nov 2 06:59 2.6.9-89.31.1.0.1.EL-i686
As far as I can see, I have two paths for solving this:
1: update the running kernel to 2.6.9-89.31.1.0.1.EL-hugemem-i686 - in order to do that I'll have to restart the machine, which is quite risky because this is an important machine used for many projects and I do not have physical access to it; in case something goes wrong I'll have to make an SR to the GIT guys, and pray for a quick resolution
    2. find this particular version on kernel headers (2.6.9-78.0.0.0.1.ELHugemem), install them in a non-standard location and then point vmplayer installer to that location in order to compile and plug them into the running kernel
    Questions:
    - If I choose the 2nd path:
-- where can I find this particular kernel headers version?
-- after vmplayer compiles them, will it request a machine restart, or plugging them into the running kernel will be possible without restart?
-- I already did an up2date -u, so the entire system excepting the running kernel is updated to whatever is in Oracle's internal repositories. Will this conflict somehow with an older running kernel and modules?
-If I choose the 1th path (update the kernel itself and reboot the machine):
-- will then vmplayer be able to compile and install the kernel modules without asking for another restart?
Thanks a lot for your feedback.
Any idea is appreciated, even pointing me to someone in Oracle that might help (I am an Oracle employee) would be useful.
    Regards
    Serban

Thanks for your reply Joe. I did not realise that I shall search for the package name without "ELHugemem" part since the headers are probably the same. Please correct me if I'm wrong here.
So I downloaded the i686 package, but now I get this message:
    [root@dscdap01 ~]# rpm -iv kernel-devel-2.6.9-78.0.1.EL.i686.rpm
warning: kernel-devel-2.6.9-78.0.1.EL.i686.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 82fd17b2
    Preparing packages for installation...
package kernel-devel-2.6.9-89.31.1.0.1.EL (which is newer than kernel-devel-2.6.9-78.0.1.EL) is already installed
I am not sure if I shall do a "rpm -ivf" for this package, forcing it to install. Will this command install the package alongside the existing one, or will it overwrite it? My guess is that it will install it alongside the existing one, but since this system is an important one I would prefer to ask before doing any stupid mistake...

Shyam. As pointed out, Oracle has not certified anything for Windows 7, and will not certify anything for any "home" edition.
I'd recommend you get a copy of VMPlayer (free, from VMware) and create a couple of virtual machines running Oracle Enterprise Linux (free, from Oracle), then install your Oracle db on the virtual machines.

  • Virtual Machine( VM WARE) using Windows Server 2008 R2- how to install a software from host to guest.

    Dear All,
Can you Please tell how to install a software SQL Server 2012 from the Host to my Guest OS Windows Server 2008R2 in my Virtual Machine? I am using VMPlayer and have already created a VM using the Windows Server 2008R2.
I just need help in installing another software (SQLServer2012) from my laptop(guest computer) to my host VM. I also have the files downloaded into my C drive of my laptop(hostcomputer) for the SQL Server 2012. But I am lost as to where to click to install
    this software to my VM.
I know I put into  Windows Server 2012 forum but I thin the procedure should be similar.
    Thank-you

    there are few options,
you can copy the files from your host to virtual machine
you can create a iso file and mount it to vm
you can share the source files and access as a share

satish.pWith the caveat (as already pointed out by Srini in this thread) that no Oracle product has ever been certified on any "home" edition of any version of Oracle ...
If I were looking to download any product, I'd start by going to that company's web site (like, www.oracle.com) and look for a tab or link called "download". I'll bet if you did that, you'd find all sorts of goodies.
But, again, since you are dealing with a "home" edition of Windows, you'll need to start by installing a virtual machine product -- VM Ware's "VMworkstation" or "VMplayer", or Oracle's VirtualBox. Then you can create a virtual machine running a supported OS. Oracle's own Linux (derived from Red Hat Linux) is also free.

  • Installing Oracle RAC problem: Could not determine /tmp mount point

    Folks,
Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2 whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6) in VMPlayer and according to the tutorial
    http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/10/11gr2-rac-on-linux-56-using-vmware.html
I am installing Grid infrastructure. I am on step 7 of 10 (verify Grid installation enviroment) and get this error:
    "Free Space: Rac2: /tmp"
Cause: Could not determine mount point for location specified.
Action: Ensure location specified is available.
    Expected value: n/a
    Actual value: n/a
I have checked the free space using the command:
    [root@Rac2 /]# df -k /tmp
    Output:
Filesystem     1k-blocks     used     Available     Use%     Mounted on
    /dev/sda1     30470144     7826952     21070432     28%     /
As you see above, the free space is enough, but could not determine mount point for /tmp.
Do any folks understand how to determine the mount point for directory /tmp ?
    Thanks.

    Folks,
Hello. I have found the file ./bash_profile under /home/ora11g/ and the file is invisible. However, I edit the file using the command:
    [ora11g@Rac2 ~]$ vi /home/ora11g/.bash_profile
I add the 2 lines into the file as below:
    TMP=/tmp; export TMP
    TMPDIR=$TMP; export TMPDIR
I save the file .bash_profile and reboot Oracle Linux 5.6 and check again on step 7 of 10 in the Installer, but the problem is still not solved.
Can any folk help to solve the strange problem "could not determine mount point for /tmp" ?
    Thanks.
