Install vs. Import Presets

I've noticed a strange behavior and wonder if its normal.  I'm very new to LR4 and this is my first encounter with User Presets in the Develop Module.
If I have my Preferences set to Store Presets with Catalog and I right-click User Persets and Import a preset, it is stored in the Develop Presets folder in the Catalog; but if I double-click the actual preset file and get the Install dialog, LR puts it in the User/AppData.....Lightroom/Develop Presets folder and its not visable until I change the Preferences to not store the Presets in the Catalog.
However, if the Preferences is set to not store the Preset in the Catalog (no check mark), both the Import (right-click User Preset) and Install (double-click) put the Preset in the same place (User/AppData............Lightroom/Develop Presets folder.
I would think if keeping the presets in the Catalog was checked, either an Import or Install should put it in the same place --- but it doesn't.  Sure looks like a bug in LR4
Is this correct?  Do others see the same thing?
And being a back-up fanatic, where is the best place to keep presets - with the Catalog or in the User AppData files?
Thanks

That was very helpful.  I thought I was going nuts - the option was set to save in the Catalog and I had just installed (double-clicked) the actual preset.lrtemplate and they didn't show up in the User Preset list but the ones I "imported" did - drove me crazy.
As I said, I would have thought the option would have controlled both the Import & Install; but as you have confirmed, only if the option is not checked (keep presets in the User/Apps folder) does the Import & Install work the same.  Wierd.
And I agree with the discussion on how & where to keep the User Presets - thanks for that link.  Guess maybe not many people keep the presets with the Catalog or they are very consistent in using Right-Click "User Presets" and only Import; never double-click & Install.
Thanks for the quick answer - I should have posted hours sooner (spend a lot of time searching the HDD to find out where the heck the "Install" versions were..............

  • Freezing in import dialog when selecting "Import Preset" FIXED IN LR3.2

    Hi all,
I have just installed Lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS5 on my Vista Ultimate 32-bit system.
When in the import dialog if i change any settings and click "Save Current Settings as Import Preset", Lightroom 3 freezes and after a minute displays the dialog to name the new Preset. After entering a new name for the Preset and clicking OK it freezes again! then eventually comes back.
I'm also getting freezes when selecting a different import drive, but that only seems to happen when using the external network drives and is possibly un-related.
I have tried running scandisk and defrag on all my drives (no change), Removing all external network drives (no change!).
    My system config is as follows;
    Windows Vista Ultimate 32-Bit 4GB RAM 2x 1TB SATA Hard Drives 3.1GHZ E8500 Dual-Core Intel CPU
Plenty of space free on both drives (500GB in each), Swap on D: Drive and O/S on C:
I installed by un-installing the Lightroom 2.6 copy and running the new install(in case it's relevant!)
Lightroom 2.6 was running perfectly before the upgrade.
    Any ideas I can try?
    Thanks in advance!

    FIXED IN Lightroom 3.2 Update

No, factory presets are embedded inside Lightroom and cannot be removed.
Well, actually, they can, but this is undocumented and you'll have to do it after each update.

  • How can I import presets in Aperture 3.3.2

I found I cannot import presets I downloaded, the original place has been moved.
Any one can help me figure it out?
    Thanks.

"After applying the Effect/Adjustment Preset change the version name and the metadata tags in the Info-tab/Metadata tab or use batch change to apply the the changes to the original image file/master image file as well"
Couldn't have said it better myself
What we need is an old Aperture to new Aperture dictionary. Or better yet an App that will take the posting and automatically convert the terms depending on the version of Aperture installed!

  • How do I install a .smp preset in CS6?

My client has provided a preset for importing Word styles into InDesign. They are using InDesign v10 and I am using CS6. The instructions I was given to install in Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version X/en_US/Word Import Presets don't exist on my system. Is there a CS6 workaround for this?

CS 6 is version 8, so look for that path as Version 8.0 instead of Version X. Also, I imagine they really said ~Library, which is your user library, and it's hidden. See Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 and later

  • NEED HELP! - Installing Camera raw presets from USB Stick

NEED HELP! -installing Camera raw presets from USB Stick.
I am attempting to install the Camera Raw Presets.
It says to put them into User Name/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/Settings...
When I get to CameraRaw the ONLY folders in there are CameraProfiles & Lens Profiles.
I have searched everywhere looking for a CameraRaw-Settings folder and cannot find one.
I have latest version of CameraRaw installed and still no settings folder.
I even attempted to find it by looking in camera raw where it has saved the custom settings I made as presets and it shows that they are saved but will not show me where.
I am using CS5 specifically Photoshop v12.0.4 and Bridge. I have Lightroom 4. I have iMac OS  10.7.3
Do I need to reinstall Camera Raw and how do you do that?
Will I then lose my presets that I made in CameraRaw?
    Thanks for your help

    Perhaps this answers question.
    Frequently Asked Questions
Why is it no longer required to place the plug-in file in the specified directory on my hard drive?
The Camera Raw update process has grown to include lens profile and camera profile files which are easiest to install via a single installer process instead of updating several different directories manually.

  • Import preset problem

A warm welcome to the Import Preset; except I'm having a problem. I have saved a few presets but when I select them only the panels on the right are changed so I see, for example, Add (to) My Catalog and Develop Settings and Metadata are just as I have set them. BUT "Select a Source" says just that, when I'd like it to go to the folder from which I want it to import. BTW there is no card in the reader, this is just an import from a folder into the catalog.
Should the preset "remember" the folder to import from, or have I misunderstood?

Should the preset "remember" the folder to import from, or have I misunderstood?
No, only the "rest" of Import dialog. The concept is: a preset remembers "how to treat the files you are importing" from any location.

  • Import Preset Qustion or Request

A general workflow question. This is something that has bothered me about controlling the import workflow but is there anyway to set the import location if your importing from you internal HD. I can understand it was made to behave with importing from the auto detected camera card, but I would really love to be bale to set a general folder location in my import preset my workflow doesn't involve camera cards. I know it holds onto the location from my previous import location but like everything I have to deviate once and a while and I would love to be able to add a general root folder to the preset. I have a feeling no but would love to request this feature in the future.

If you save an Import preset, it remembers the destination (assuming you've used Copy or Move, not Add, which has no destination). By setting the Root Folder, and using One Folder, into Subfolder you can give each Import a new subfolder name as desired, or just use a date structure.

    FWIW...
SequelPro is a Cocoa-based Mac-style tool for MySQL.  This is a native equivalent to the MySQL Workbench stuff.  This if you're not managing the database from the command line.
Do not install the available MySQL-related web-based management tools (eg: mysqladmin) in a web-facing directory (and certainly not unprotected against remote access) as many of the web-gremlins actively probe for the various known-weaknesses in those.  These tools have various vulnerabilities, and are widely targeted.
MySQL is not available in Lion Server.  You'll need to manage your own MySQL installation and patches starting on OS X Server 10.7 and later, or migrate your database to SQLite or PostgreSQL.
Here is an example mysqldump backup and restore script.

  • Auto-import Presets

I searched the forum(s) for this request but didn't find anything that seemed relevant, so here goes (and my apologies if this has been requested before or is already available through some option I missed): I use auto-import all the time -- it's a standard part of my workflow for new images from my cameras, whether tethered or not. To cope with the half dozen or so different scenarios and situations that are repeatedly part of those workflows, I'd like to be able to have a pull-down list of named auto-import presets under the auto-import preferences dialog. This would cover things like location the imported files are moved to, canned metadata to be applied, processing, etc. in named configurations.
Not a huge deal, but it'd certainly make my life somewhat easier and less error-prone while out in the field....

I second that. Plus an option just to watch a folder, instead of auto-copy only

  • Import preset change of develop settings saving problem.

I think this is a bug:
    In Library/ Import
When I want to change Apply during Import/ the Develop Settings, the my existing Import Preset cannot be updated with this change.
I only can create a new Import Preset with that.
But anyway if I change to another Import Preset the Develop Settings do not change and stay with the settings I did choose in the previous Import Preset.
The newly created Import Preset works fine though in LR 3.6.
    Frans

This is the behaviour under LR3 :
Left down corner My Import Preset with Right top corner Develop Settings  set to None
Now when I change the Develop Setting to B&W
the Import Preset name changes to DMC-GF1 ©CFW Rename (Edited)
That does not work in LR4.
Keep up the Good Work ,Victoria ! Thanks.

  • Lightroom not loading custom settings and imported presets when launched

So I read an article about deleting windows temp files and I did so with the intention of bring my computer back up to speed.
The recycle bin has since been emptied.
When I launch Lightroom in Windows XP my previously imported presets as well as a couple other custom settings (ID plate) don't show up. I have to re-import them everytime I launch Lightroom unless I'm opening a previous cataloge.
    Any ideas?

    Here's my entire process -
1 - load my SD card in to my computer and import RAW files in to a file on my computer and on to an external hard drive.
2 - remove the connection of my external hard drive
3 - Open LR 5 - Import the files I just loaded to my computer
4 - go to develop in LR 5 make my edits
5 - when done or done for the day on my edits - I back up my LR 5 library and close LR 5
6 - To start editing again - I open my LR 5 with the same library I closed the day before and here is where the hiccup comes in.
Files are always in the same location & file names that I named them when I did the initial import to my computer and external hard drive.  I have Windows 8 OS.
No, there were not "!" on any of the images.

  • How to cycle through various (imported) presets

How to cycle through various (imported) presets/ effects in lightroom without adding them to the previous effect? In other words, I want to just keep trying various presets in developer mode but when I click on different effects, it should reset and apply current effect, instead of adding/ compounding over previous effect.
What I am doing now is Undoing the effect each time before trying next effect or preset.

I have downloaded very few presets, but in order to make presets useful for me I need to have them pretty specific, so all in all it adds up to a pretty long list when you list all of them. All I wanted was a way to chose what presets gets listed in the import dialog (alternatively sort them in a specific order). Whatever you name your user presets folder they get listed at the end of the list, and conversely the Lightroom default presets gets listed at the top. The way Lightroom behaves with these presets folders is very unintuitive and frustrating, one of many reasons why I have a love/hate relationship with this program, but I'll have to get back to that because I have to run now!

  • I can import presets in LR 4, but not LR 5. Any advice?

I can import presets into LR 4, but I cannot import into LR 5. If I right click on "User Presets" nothing happens. If I go to "preferences" and try to load from there, nothing will load.

You normally copy the lrtemplate file directly into the user presets folder
If you click the button in preferences (presets tab) “Show Lightroom Presets Folder” it will take you to the folder location.
    Double click on Lightroom folder
Double click on Develop Presets folder
You should now see the User Presets folder – you can copy or drag into this.
If LR is still running, quit and restart.
