Install Windows 7 FROM an external hard drive

Hello everyone,
I was just wondering if it is possible too install windows 7 using boot camp from a 250GB external hard drive. I have a bootable image of windows 7 on my Macbook Pro, but want to know if its possible to install before I try.

Hi,
The simple answer is "No".
Have a look at this post ((http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12308829&#12308829) for a short answer.
Best bet in getting started with bootcamp is first to read through the "Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide" (http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup10.6.pdf)
Will probably want to look / post on the "Apple Discussions: Category : Boot Camp" (http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237) if you have further questions - more for bootcamp.
Hope this helps.

Is it possible to boot windows solely from an external hard drive so that it does not affect the internal drive. I already know that you can partition the internal hard drive to do the very same. Idon't want to use any of the internal space to run windows so I'm asking if it is possible to use a flash drive or external drive through USB to run windows when it is plugged in.

  • Installing PhotoShop CS from an External Hard Drive to PC Vista

My Dell laptop crashed about a year ago, and I was able to have the hard drive backed up to an external. I now need my PhotoShop CS which is on the external hard drive. I need to know how to install PhotoShop, and others in the creative suite, from the external drive. I am having a problem figuring out which files need to be installed first, i.e. .exe and .dll files.
The hard drive is an iMicro 3.5" SATA and IDE HDD
I am currently running Windows Vista, Gateway Notebook
**I can not find the original Creative Suite cds; I think they may have been "accidentally" thrown away by someone other than myself. Long story.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Uah... Who would be so obviously plain stupid? I mean, one can throw away the boxes, manuals and gift wrap, but by all means keep the media in a safe place. *yikes* Anyway, as the others said - without the original install CDs that is a no go and unless the missing disc turns up magically, an upgrade to CS4 is the only way to get going (and that's assuming you know your serials and have registered them).

  • Installing Windows 7 onto an external hard drive?

So I got a 2TB external LaCie hard drive and my question is: can I install my copy of Windows 7 onto it using bootcamp?  I rarely use Windows7 so I just want to be able to plug in the external hard drive and boot from it whenever I need to use Windows.  I've seen mixed answers on this so I just wanted to get it clarified.  Thanks!

What kind of connection is the external hard drive? If it's USB, probably not because Apple's CSM-BIOS implementation doesn't support USB boot. Firewire should work.
And also what Apple hardware? The 2011 minis have an SD slot that purportedly does support booting Windows or any other OS. I have a 2011 MBP8,2 with such an SD slot but haven't attempted an OS install or boot from it.

  • Installing Windows XP from Old PC Hard Drive Without Installation CD???

    Hi,
Let me first say I'm a brand new mac user and loving my new macbook pro. A major issue I'm having is that I'm in real estate and can't use my online MLS System without running Windows. I hooked up my old IDE hard drive via USB 2.0 adapter thinking I could run bootcamp and find the necessary installation files from the old hardrive. It looks like bootcamp will only let me install via a CD or DVD. I don't have the original Windows CD. Any thoughts from anyone? Please keep in mind I only know the very basics and don't understand technical computerese talk. Thanks!!!

Darn, no such luck. I get about half of it, but all the java stuff doesn't show up. Bummer

I may go routing through my storage and try to find an old Windows 2000 installation CD.

  • Installing mac os from an external hard drive

I had setup a Windows Partition and I'm wanting to completely remove it and had a single partition restored with Mac OS.  I've restored the Mac OS to an external HD which I'm booting from now as I have completely deleted the Bootcamp partition and made the Macintosh HD a single partition again.  I need to get the Mac OS on my external HD back onto the single partition that's on the Mac itself.  I'm struggling to do this and would like some steps if possible.  I've booted into the recovery utility that's on the external drive and I'm trying to image the Macintosh HD with the restore that's on my external HD.  The problem I'm having is finding where the image is that I need to copy.  I've read that I should be looking for a .DMG file but cannot locate that.  Am I going down the right path?  Please help.  Thanks

Running a SERVER on a only temporarily available disk is surely not what this OS was designed for.. Servers must be up 24/7 in order to serve their clients. Also Lion Server is only an app, running on top of normal Lion, so the App must be actively running all the time.
Disk Permissions in Lion ( client or server ) are not that different to Snow, but Lion mounts all partitions as read-only on the Root level, so that write is only taking part in the /Users and /Library directories. ( /System only if validated installers are launched with Admin rights ) .

You cannot. From a legal standpoint, the license agreement for OS X mandates that you run OS X only on Apple hardware. HP is not (yet) owned by Apple.
From a technical standpoint, your HP laptop doesn't use EFI, but rather an early predecessor called a BIOS. Apple is the only vendor of consumer computer hardware that uses EFI; other vendors reserve EFI for use in servers.
Secondly, Apple's operating systems support a rather limited number of configurations of video hardware and mainboard chipsets directly since they need only support those systems that they manufacture. You cannot use Windows software or drivers on OS X, so prior to installation, you would need to write your own hardware drivers for your laptop, create an OS X drive image on a Mac, and then modify that image with your drivers before putting it in the HP.
It will be simpler (and legal), to simply purchase a used Mac. Apple's online store has refurbished MacBook Airs starting at $850 and Mac Minis for $700. If you go to e-bay or craigslist, you'll find used Macs for considerably less.

  • How do I restore my itunes 11 library from my external hard drive to my Windows computer?

I cleaned my computer out and reinstalled Windows XP and ITunes 11 but I cannot figure out how to restore my entire library and playlists from my external hard drive. Which file am I looking to restore and how do I do it?

Hopefully you backed up the entirety of the folder iTunes in <User's Music>. If so copy it from the backup into <User's Music> and install iTunes.

  • I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space, and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run t media from an external hard drive? If so, how do I transfer my files?

I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space (32 GB), and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run itunes from an external hard drive? I have tried to follow some of the directions on this site, but am having no success. Thanks.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.

in my Usage it says i have over 40 gb of movies when i only have about 9gb which i can see using spotlight search. i really hope the other amount is my missing videos! these are videos of my kids as babies.

Read this post and do the migration again, putting the library in a portable shape first if necessary.

  • How do i import my library from an external hard drive. Exported it as had to wipe pc and reinstal windows but when i try to import nothing happens

How do i import my library from an external hard drive. Had to export it as had to reinstal windows due to a conflict between windows and i-tunes. Wen i try to import nothing happens despite selecting the file. Can you import from an i-phone to i-tunes?

What do you mean bye exported the library?
There is nothing to export or import.
The correct process to backup the iTunes library would be to copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the computer to the external drive.

For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.
I did the drive replacement myself, got a faster drive of better quality for $300 instead.
Then another time I asked for a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, they wanted to charge $400 + $35 for the labor.
The same RAM is on Crucial.com for $90 and all I need is a 00 micro phillips screwdriver.
So you see what's going on here.
I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine.

  • Can I re-install Adobe Creative Suite from an external hard drive?

After an appointment in the Genius Bar I have decided to have my mac's hard drive completely wiped. I had installed Mavericks and it caused a lot of my Adobe programs to stop working probably, the girl in the mac store said this was because the Adobe Master Collection CS4 is incompatible with Mavericks. So I'm having to take my Mac in to be completely wiped so that Lion can be reinstalled. I have ran time machine on an external hard drive to back up all my files, including my Adobe master collection. When I get back Mac back, can I reinstall my Adobe programs just from my external hard drive? If so, how do I do this?

You can try with migration assistant.. but I think you would be much better doing install from original disks. You can recover your working files etc..
Alot will depend on what you have done with Time Machine since you upgraded to Mavericks. If you did not do any TM backups you could have simply restored the computer from TM.
