Install Windows 7 natively on 2nd MacMini drive?

I have a 2 drive MacMini SL server which is running plain ol' SL.  I want to install Windows on the second drive and not through bootcamp.  Can I just go into Disk Utility, erase and reformat the 2nd drive at MS-DOS, and then copy all my files that were in the bootcamp partition over including the WIndows files?  The Genius Bar said yes but it was a quick conversation during checkout after I got the mini (with the new motherboard!) back.  I just want to make sure I'm doing this right and not screwing it up.  I still have the Win7 bootcamp partition on the boot drive so I've not lost anything but I want this to be an exercise in futility.  Thanks!

I don't see how this could work.  Bootcamp provides required Windows drivers.
Why would you want to do this?

  • Installing Windows XP on a 2nd internal drive

    Hi,
I'm attempting to install Windows XP on another internal hard drive on my new Mac Pro. So I run the Boot Camp assistant and select the drive in bay 2 - which is completely empty. I select the option to "Erase disk and create a single partition for Windows". I then insert my Windows XP install disc and restart. But when it gets to the Windows installer, I don't know with drive to select! I don't want to erase my Mac OS X drive by mistake. It's not clear at all which drive i should choose. Neither of them mention "Bootcamp" and it claims both drives have partitions which are "unrecognized".
Any suggestions on how to determine in the Windows installer which drive to use?
    I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.2.

    I found a solution.
I went into Disk Utility and formatted the 2nd drive. 1 partition. FAT32. MBR partitioning scheme. I then called it "WINDOZE".
In Boot Camp, I then selected the option to simply "Start the Windows Installer" and selected the drive in Bay 2. When Windows boots up, it recognizes the 2nd drive with the name "WINDOZE" and the format as FAT32. So I can tell which drive is which and select it without accidently erasing my Mac OS X drive.
    HTH someone.

  • Can I install windows 7 on a second internal drive on a macbook pro 2011?

Can I install windows 7 on a second internal drive on a macbook pro 2011? I have 2 500 gb. SSD drives in my 2011 MacBook Pro. My plan was to install windows 7 on the 2nd drive. I'm new at owning Macs so I have had Windows on main drive using bootcamp but I wanted to speed up my 17" Mac so I maxed out the memory and added the SSD drives.  Thinking I could put the 2 operating systems on seperate drives I bought to 2 SSD's. Is there any way to do this.  So far I have drawn a blank. Any ideas?

Yes. Just install Windows onto it without using the Boot Camp Assistant to partition it.

  • How do I install windows xp on a 2TB external drive osx 10.6.8?

How do I -OR- CAN I
Install Windows XP on a 2TB external drive OSX 10.6.8?
I WILL get another 2TB to back up to 1st!
Should I start over with the New 2TB Drive and put the XP & OSX partitions on it 1st?
BTW... Anyone have an idea where I should send a WindowsXP drive that has the click of death syndrome to get the data off it?
    Thanx Y'All
    OKMatthew

Microsoft doesn't allow users to install Windows on an external drive, so you can't do it. Instead, install Windows in the internal hard drive through Boot Camp.
Respecting to your second problem, there are companies that recovers data from your hard drive, so you may want to contact with them

So that just indicates that you erased the OS X partition also
It appears you will have to reformat the disk again
    Install OS X again
Then using BootCamp create a partition for Windows
Then install Windows into that partition

  • Install Windows 7 on imac's secondary drive? What are my options?

Hi, I plan on customizing a 27" imac with a 256gb Solid State Drive along with a 2TB Drive. I plan on installing Windows 7 64 bit on the imac. Which drive should I install Windows 7 on it? Is it only possible to install Windows 7 on the Solid state drive (boot drive) or could I install it on the 2TB Drive? if I partition the drive then I only have approximately 128 gb of storage space for Windows 7 and Snow Leopard. Anyone?

    You could create a FAT volume on your 2TB and then convert or format to NTFS;
Add HFS write support to Windows / Add NTFS write support to Mac OS.
Windows Home Server has support for TimeMachine, media streaming, etc.
Maybe with Lion it would fit into the home LAN server finally.

Of course if you upgrade to Lion there could be changes and need to wait for updates for some utilities for 3-6 months, too.
Apple’s Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme might make one way to add network storage support and integration.

  • How to install Windows XP on a single SATA drive?

I am trying without much success to use a single Maxtor 200 GB SATA drive in a non-RAID configuration running Windows XP Home SP 2+. I obtained documentation from the MSI Download site that explains how to do such a thing. However ...
First, out of the box the Drivers & Utilities CD is useless -- can't read it, simply hangs the CD drive.
Second, the drivers from the Download site (IATA_ICH5R) return "incompatible hardware. software not supported on this chipset" messages.
So where do I get the drivers required to install Windows XP on a single SATA drive (to use at point F6 in the Windows XP installation)?
    Regards,
    Bob (ll1951md)
    P.S. Configuration ...
    865PE/G Neo2-P (MS-6728) w/ Intel Extreme Graphics 2, Realtek ALC655 Audio
2 GB Corsair Dual Channel DDR Memory
    Intel P4 3.0e GHz Processor
1 Maxtor 200 GB SATA HD
1 HDS 120 GB ATA HD

Thanks for the tips. I was able to install Windows XP and boot from the SATA drive by using these options and setting the appropriate boot device selections...
    Legacy Mode
    ATA Configuration - PATA only
    SATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA channel selection - both
    Combined Mode Option - S-ATA 1st Channel
    S-ATA Ports Definition - P0 - 3rd./P1 - 4th.
I just wasn't sure if I was really getting "SATA" performance, etc. without specific drivers.
    Thanks again.

    padman215, welcome to the forum,
you need to boot from the Rescue and Recovery cd and select to recover the system and then to recover to factory state. It will then eventually ask for the other discs.
Please be sure that you read the messages carefully; if it asks for a supplementary disc, (which you don't seem to have), you need to click on "no" should it ask for one - this throws alot of people.
    Happy installing

  • Will my MacPro be safe if I install Windows 7 on a separate hard drive?

I have a MacPro desktop with two hard drives: the first has my programs, the second is a dedicated media drive where i store all my media for my FInal Cut Pro and Motion projects.
I bought a third hard drive that I plan to dedicate as my PC hard drive. If I install Windows 7 on this third hard drive, is there any danger that my mac computer could become infected with viruses.
I figured I could partitition my drive. But I thought it would be safer if I just bought a separate hard drive altogether and stored nothing but Windows 7 and Windows-compatible programs on the third hard drive.
But if an internet virus infects my PC hard drive, could my entire MacPro desktop be at risk?
Thanks very much in advance for any advice and help,
    - Nick

No, Mac OS drives etc should be fine.
Pull your OS X drives while you install 7.
Use MS Security Essentials, excellent, but also use "common sense."

    It DOESN'T WORK!!
I tried tonnes of method already, and the apple guide method absolutely doesn't work for MacBook Air, 10.9.1
Did you even tried it yourself????!! with Maverick 10.9.1 you will NOT be able to get pass the bootcamp first page:"install window 7". It will give an error msg saying "The installer disc could not be found"
My usb confirmed bootable! I created it with bootcamp, and tested it on a different macbook and it works. But doesn't work on MacBook Air. (Even startup disk doesn't detect it as bootable in Air)
anyone else has a real solution to this problem?
Thousands have successfully tried it themselves and installed Windows on a Macbook Air. Perhaps if you provided some details about what you did and what errors you observed we could help you. The Boot Camp instaructions, if followed, will produce a successful install.

If you don't have your install disks you can get the gray disks by calling Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 They can send them to you for about $16 per disk plus S & H. Just give them your serial number and they'll know which ones you need.
Or you can get a Snow Leopard retail disk for $29.  http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY

  • Can I install windows 7 on a potable Hard Drive using boot camp? or any other way to do so?? need help for college please

I need to use windows in order to use Visual C++ for college but I don't have enough space in my internal Hard Drive so I want to install windows 7using boot camp or any other method on a portable hard drive and boot from it.
Please help I need it as soon as possible for school. Thanks

You can't boot Windows natively except on internal drives.
You can use a VM and put the VM image (VHD) anywhere any drive you want.
You are way too low on disk space, seriously so. And no room - even Windows and Mac OS should be warning and balking already.
"emulator" is an old-school term, even true, running a Guest OS under Mac's as a virtual machine, shared resources (RAM, processor) is easier but not the same performance level as running natively.
