Install Windows 7 on external drive and boot iMac from it?

Hi everyone,
I want to use Windows 7 on my iMac, I would like to install Windows 7 on an external drive and boot my iMac from this external drive. Is this possible? If yes, any good tutorials?
(I am aware of virtual machines, but am wondering if I can do the above).
Thank you.

Forget trying to use Windows 7 that way.
Add another internal drive to your iMac.
Not knowing which iMac whether you have dual SATA internal like the 2011s.
Those were not "tutorials" but just whatever Google would come up with (a good start but not tutorials or dealing with 7 or hope of success, yes?)
Why? to avoid what you forsee as complications? Not "dirty" or interfere?
Windows tools exist for Windows to import and image and deploy.
You can run Mac OS on any bootable external.

  • I think the DVD player reader on my Mac is going bad. Is there a way to copy the files off of an Apple Install DVD onto an external drive and then do theinstall from the external drive?

I think the DVD player reader on my Mac is going bad. Until I get it fixed Is there a way to copy the files off of an Apple Install DVD onto an external drive and then do theinstall from the external drive? It's ILife 11 if that makes a difference. Finder won't let me see the files to copy. I know - dumb question.
    Thanks.

Adding an SSD is not a simple endeavour like adding additional memory or adding another hard drive to a Mac Pro. That's probably why the option is only offered as an option at the time of purchase. Even if your Apple store was willing to install the necessary parts you will probably be paying for 1-2 hours of labor plus the cost of purchasing the necessary service parts (SSD, bracket, cables, etc) which I suspect will make the upgrade cost much higher than what it costs to add the SSD option when purchasing a new system.
I use my system for business and need it to work reliably.  Even though I'm fairly handy with tools I would not be willing to risk damaging my system and voiding my warranty by opening my system and removing the logic board and several other parts in order to squeeze in an SSD option and attach the appropriate cables and brackets. I'm also not prepared to deal with the hassles of explaining why my system has unauthorized parts installed in the event I experience issues and need to make use of my Apple warranty. My time is valuable, so I would probably investigate external storage options, or if I needed the speed of an SSD, I would consider selling my existing system and then purchase a new system configured with an SSD.
If you haven't already done so I suggest doing a search on 'iMac SSD installation' to see what's involved. It might help you understand why the SSD option is not offered post purchase.

  • Is there a way to install Windows (with programs) on an external drive and run it from the Pro?

I have a 1TB Seagate Goflex that I am using to backup the Mac, but I want to partition it and run Windows and Windows Apps from it, rather than risk my HDD.  Does anyone have any experience doing that or have any ideas on how it might be done?  I am willing to risk the Seagate external drive, but not the laptop.

    Bob,
you could put a virtualizer such as VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop on the external drive, and install Windows and Windows apps in the virtualizer.

  • How do I combine iTunes movies and music on external drive and play both from same library?

Trying to make an old MacBook with current iTunes a server for Apple TV. Have burned DVDs to external drive and have added my music to drive. iTunes made a library on the external drive. When I open iTunes to choose a library, I can either get all of the movies or get all of the music, but I cannot choose something that is both. I have even dragged the movies into the same file as the music, hopping that would help, but alas, I can still just have one or the other.
Any help would be so appreciated.
    Thank you.

Choose one library and drag the files from the other to the library in the open iTunes application window.

  • Prohibited sign at bootup after cloning internal hdd to external hdd and booting up from it

    Good evening.
My specifications/environment: I have a Macbook Pro 17" 2009 model running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  The internal hdd had 2 partitions, one for Mac and one for Bootcamp.
Objective:  I am trying to upgrade the internal 500GB to a Seagate 1TB external Harddrive and making it the primary internal. Then I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
Steps taken:  Used a 2TB external to make a Time Machine backup of the current internal harddrive.  I put it aside.  I made a clone of the internal harddrive (only the mac partition) to another 1TB external, using Disk Rescue 3.  I took external Seagate out of its external case and replaced the 500GB internal. I booted up with the new 1TB drive and got a prohibited sign with the spinning circle.  I booted up again holding in the ALT key to select the boot drive.
I did notice though that the 1TB Seagate drive used, is a little bit fatter than the previous 500GB internal.  I did manage to fit the drive in still, as it had the SATA connector and it did sort of fit in.
Since I couldnt get the drive loaded up, I put the original back in, started up and did a verify and repair on the new drive.  It did say that there was a minor header error and it fixed it.  Put the new 1TB back in as the internal, but still getting the prohibited sign at startup.
I booted up again without holding ALT and got the folder with the question mark flashing. I shut down again and used ALT and selected the Hard drive for start up and got the prohibited sign again.
i must mention that I also had difficulties deleting the Bootcamp partition and reclaiming the storage to the Mac HDD.
I have more details on the issue as I've tried so many different things.
Please guide me into what steps I should take to make this work.
    Thank you in advance

After the two previous partition/format attempts (the first of which included Zero Data erase [around 5 hrs on the 500GB drive as recommended per Kappy's Extended Hard Drive Preparation]) I returned the drive to the retailer for an exchange with an identical WD Scorpio Blue 500GB (I wasn't sure that there was an issue with the drive but didn't want to take any chances on my brand new hard drive upgrade....).
I prepared the new replacement drive attached via USB 2.0 Bytec DriveMate (which has a separate power supply) using Disk Utility (running DU off the internal hard drive [Leopard ver 11.1}), partitioned as 1 partition, GUID, Mac OS Extended (Journaled); erased (but did not zero data); unchecked the "ignore ownership" check box of the external destination drive via Get Info after selecting the drive on the Desktop; and cloned the internal HD to the external drive using the Restore tab of DU, selecting "erase destination" check box.
The clone using Disk Utility Restore tab completed successfully in around 4 hours (83GB of data cloned to the 500GB drive...seems long...perhaps selecting "erase destination" under the Restore tab caused it to take longer?). I unchecked the "ignore ownership" box for the destination drive again after cloning. Rebooted to the external drive and ran a few apps....everything OK.
Not sure what the difference was in the successful clone - whether there was a problem with the original drive or whether "zeroing the data" during the first erase and partition may have created issues - but it worked fine with the new drive.

  • I have my iTunes library on external drive and can access from any PC. However I cannot access from new MacBokk Air.

My iTunes library is on an external drive and been using it on two PCs with no problem.
Now that I got a new MacBook Air I want to access the same iTunes library from the external drive and keep all the library and media on that external drive.
When I try to change to another iTunes library by hitting "option" with iTunes and select the library on the external hard drive I get the following message:
"The iTunes library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do noy have write permission for this file."
I have read many posts in which many suggest to go to the library or media file on the PC and right click to make sure the read only tab is not checked.
I uncheked the read only tab and gave full permission to all the iTunes files and folders.
The unusual part is that I can use this external drive on many PCs that I have tried with no problem at all.
I just select a different library, which is on my external hard drive and everything works, play lists and everything.
However, when I try it on a MAC i get the message stated above:
What can I do to be able to access my External iTunes library from new MacBook Air while keeping everything on the external drive like I can on PCs?
I am running latest version of iTunes and Mavericks.
    Please advise.

  • Windows XP, an external drive and my MBP

I know the question of installing Windows XP to an external USB/FireWire drive has been asked a thousand times but I haven't been able to find anything about an instance of XP which is already installed.
My wife's PC died. While we wait on parts to be shipped via newegg, I'd like to be able to continue to use her "machine". I have her HD in a FireWire capable enclosure but I'm unable to boot from it. When I hold the Option button during bootup, it allows me to select the external drive but I'm unable to boot from it. The error message I get is along the lines of: "Unable to find boot disk ..."
Does anybody know if it's possible to use a pre-installed WinXP disk and a MBP?

Not likely. Not only will Windows refuse to install on an external drive it will likely refuse to even startup from one. However, no harm comes from trying. At worst it won't boot. Part of the problem is that the default Windows OS is not configured to boot from an external device. One can modify Windows to boot from a USB drive, but not from Firewire drives. It's just that out of the box it doesn't work.

  • How do I install base system on external drive to boot MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook Pro 2.2 core 2 duo. I use an external HD for storage. Want to make external drive bootable (i.e. to run apps like DiskWarrior on MacBookPro).
How do I install the base system?
    Thank you.

First, be sure the external drive is partitioned using the GUID partition scheme. If it isn't then you will have to re-partition the drive which will erase anything you have on the drive.
Second, the external drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
Last, boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer and install OS X onto the external drive. Do not do an Erase and Install if you don't want to erase the external drive. You can customize the installation to omit any additional components you don't need such as language localizations, Asian Fonts, unneeded printer drivers, etc.

  • Will BootCamp install Windows on an external drive?

Instead of partitioning the onboard SSD of my 2011 MacBook Air, I was wondering if I could connect an external drive to put Windows on and boot into Windows from that device. Is that possible?
    Thanks!

No, you can run Mac OS from there though and keep the SSD for Windows.
Realize this has been said 100s of times and a quick search with Google/Bing/Yahoo would also answer.

  • Solution - install Windows 7 with external drive bootcamp lion

I finally found a solution to "trick"the Windows install!
The first install will run also from external drive. The problem ist the reboot!
On every reboot simply plug out your external DVD and press option-key. Select Windows harddisk and the installation
will continue. Plug in your external DVD once you see "Starting Windows".
Repeat this on every reboot until Windows is installed!
    That´s it.

  • External drives and the iMAC Dual Core

I have a Maxtor III external drive. It is a Firewire 400/USB model. I installed it on the PC side of the iMAC with no problem. The PC recognized the drive and I backed up that side of the computer. When I tried to backup the MAC side, the drive wasn't recognized (the Maxter III icon is on MAC desktop). I have the Maxtor connected to the computer through the USB port. Has anyone had this experience? The Maxtor is formatted in NTFS--should I reformat in FAT32? If so, I tried that, but the program wouldn't let me reformat--there was only the NTFS format option.

Use the instructions in this document to create NTFS and Mac OS Extended partitions on the disk.
Windows XP will not give you the option to format a disk larger than 32GB as FAT32 with the built-in software, and you may run into problems if you try using a FAT32 disk to back up a Mac unless you use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to create a disk image in HFS+ format.

In case its just the tags that you want to have in one catalog that is easy. From multiple computers save the tags to the xml file.Copy the xml file to the external drive where the catalog resides. From there you can import the tags into the catalog.
Command for exporting tags ->Save tags to file in the tags panel of the application
    Command for importing tags->From file

  • How can I merge music from an external drive and my iMac.

Well, I've made progress. I have a set of tunes on my external hard drive that contain some, but not all the tunes on my iMac in addition to tunes not on my iMac. I just replaced my hard drive on my PowerBook. I'd like to have all my Tunes on it. All the music on my iMac plus the non-duplicated music on my external hard drive. Is there a simple way to do this. In my question yesterday I had transfered all the music from my iMac. I then took and transferred the music folder from my external drive to my desktop and tried to import it into iTunes. What a mess. I finally got everything deleted so there is now nothing in either my music folder or iTunes. Can someone help please.
    Thanks

  • HT2688 Can I install iTunes on an external drive and store my music there?

I am trying to figure out the best way to manage my music.  600 cds that I need to upload somewhere.  I am thinking I put them in itunes and then bluetooth them to a wireless speaker.    My old school stereo needs to go but I am not sure where to begin?  Help?

iTunes, like any other program installed on a computer is only installed on the main (typically C) drive.
The media folder can be stored anywhere the user likes.
How one connects speakers to the computer is their own business and has nothing to do with iTunes.
