Install Windows 7 with Bootcamp 2HD setup in a MBP

Hello Everyone,
I have a 2010 MBP with an SSD for my main drive and a rotational 750gig for my secondary "storage" drive. I have windows installed via parallels on the second drive for games. But I have realized that when I play games windows taxes my system and I think I could get better performance out of my games if the game was running natively on my system. I only want to have windows installed because some of my favorite games will never make their way over to the Mac platform, no matter how much I cry and begg the developer. Here is my situation:
I have the current bootcamp software and I am able to launch bootcamp.
Bootcamp runs and creates a separate partition on the second drive, the one that I want it on and then restarts like normal.
I have my CD/DVD drive connected via USB and it is recognized by bootcamp and my MBP before the restart. When the restart takes place the drive spins the windows setup disk but does not try to install windows.
My next step is to manually restart the MBP and hold the option key which gives me the option to boot into my Mac OSX disk, Recovery, Windows Install, or BFI Boot (or whatever the windows boot partition of the install disk is). When I choose the BFi or whatever the boot partition of the windows install disk is the screen goes blank and then asks to boot from CD or DVD. I hit the enter key before time runs out and it starts the install. The bar progresses accross the screen and the CD/DVD drive spins up like normal. When the progress bar reaches the end of the screen (the black and white one that says loading windows files) the progress stops and the CD/DVD drive slows and stops. There is a pause and then it starts to spin up again but only to half speed and the screen remains the same (like a hang). I have waited for some time and the screen never changes and the drive evenutally stops spinning.
I think this is a hang but I do not know what could be causing it. I have read that bootcamp will not load from USB, no problem since I can get the MBP to sort of load and install windows from USB anyways. I just cant get past the initial "loading windows files" screen.
Has anyone else experianced this? I have searched the web and this board for this but it seems like I am the only one that has experinaced this situation. Does anyone know what could be causing the hang? I did purchase a new copy of windows 7 HP but it was a download so I had to create a bootable disk. I made two one from within Disk Utilities and one from within my virtual Windows environment.
Any help or suggestions would be great!!

You are correct, the SSD is in the normal HD drive bay and the storage HD is in the DVD drive bay. I wanted to install windows on my non-SSD drive since I only have a few gigs of space on that drive. I have read that for bootcamp to work to completeness the DVD drive must be in the correct bay and not by USB. But I also read that since the latest update bootcamp recognizes non-bay DVD drives like the ones attached via USB.
I can get the installation to start, as I originally said. But it hangs on the "loading windows files" screen. This is my problem. I can get everything else to work, bootcamp makes a partition and all that.

  • Trying to install Windows 7 with Bootcamp on my Macbook with a faulty CD drive

I am trying to install Windows 7 with Bootcamp on my Macbook A1278 (OS 10.6.8) with a faulty CD drive (CDs and DVDs get stuck in it and I had to get it removed in an Apple store, so I don't want to use it anymore). I have got a licence for the product but I am only in possession of the ISO, is there any way to install it using a USB stick?
I don't have many options while launching Bootcamp, only
"Download the Windows support software for this Mac" but when I try I get a message explaining me that the download could not continue as the software is not available,
    or
"I have the Mac OS X installation disc [...]" but obviously I can't use my CD drive so this is not an option. I tried it anyway and I created a Windows partition but when asked to "start the Windows installer", I can only continue by insering a CD.
I tried to use a USB stick and added the ISO on it but nothing has changed.
How can I install my copy on Windows?...

BobTheFisherman > Hem, yeah, that is stating the problem and not working toward resolving it.
Turbostar > I checked the link and it seems to be relating to the first video I have seen on the subject. I tried to install Tuxera then to work with rEFIt, but I did not get any result yet (I don't know if I am doing something wrong during the USB writing process as many different ways are explained on different websites).
So far my last try was to launch Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool on VMware Fusion but it the only disk shown is A:\ Removable disk (not the name of my USB) and it is stated that the disk is being used by another program, even though it's not open on the Mac side.
Some websites are advising to write the copy of windows on a USB via a PC and then launch it on the Macbook, so I might try that in the next few days. I will keep you updated.
If anyone has another option I might not have think about, or an advice on how to efficiently create a bootable Windows setup USB with my Mac, please let me know!

  • Installing Windows 7 with Bootcamp question

Hey guys, I recently switched over from a PC to a Mac this year and wanted to install Windows 7 with Bootcamp so I could do some gaming every once and a while. I've read that I can't use the restore discs that I got with my ASUS to install Vista, so that's out of the question. I also have a Windows 7 upgrade disc that I used a while back to install Windows 7 on the ASUS. Will that upgrade disc work if the ASUS is restored? If not, will an OEM copy of Windows 7 be all I need? A retail copy of Windows 7 Home Edition is kind of steep to only be used part of the time.
    Thanks in advance!

Well, "WHICH" Mac do you have?
Go to the Apple menu (upper left corner)/About This Mac/More Info and at the top (under Hardware content) it should say "Model name" and "Identifier". Then put it in your profile so you don't have to keep remembering to do it.:)
You might call/e-mail ASUS and ask if it can be used on another computer. Don't tell them it will be used on a Mac. Just tell them your thinking on building one from scratch.
If you have a "desktop" ASUS then you MIGHT be able to just switch over the HD after Upgrading it to 7, but I believe the ASUS, Dell, etc, setups are "matched" to the COMPUTER so it might not work. A retail full version of Window 7 will work. You might also try Microsoft and tell them the same thing, might be able to get another "Upgrade"?
I'm in the same boat, just play a few games on XP but want to get Windows 7, you have to spend $100 dollars more for "Pro" to get the "Windows XP Mode"! E-Bay does have it quite a bit cheaper then Microsoft sells it for.

  • Hi, can I install windows XP with bootcamp on my iMac which is now on Maverick? Please help.

Hello all, can I install windows XP with bootcamp on my iMac which is now on Maverick? Please advise. Thank you.

Install 7. Don't bother with applying drivers and such, just reboot again from DVD and install again, it will see the existing system and this time activation will be possible.
Vista is mess, takes longer etc. Hope you have SP1 version of 7. And for Vista, only SP2+ are even supported now, by MS.

  • Installing Window 7 with bootcamp

    Hi
I installed windows 7 with bootcamp and it worked.
Later I removed windows 7 with bootcamp and it also worked.
Now I'm reinstalling windows with bootcamp and I'm not able to create a partition that I can use for Windows. Bootcamp creates a partition I formatted it to NTFS.
But when I am installing windows it prompts: can't create partition.
    Please help

Be aware that EFI boot has issues with Graphics and Audio on Windows 7, but not on Windows 8+.
If you are using EFI boot, create a Free Space partition and let it be split by the Installer, into MSR and MSD. On Mac models which are considered preUEFI models, it may not work properly. Check your Model Identifier (System Report -> Hardware) against this list. preUEFI models do not understand the MSR data partition and will return Boot Device not found.

  • Can i install windows 7 with bootcamp on imac with flash storage

can i install windows 7 with bootcamp on imac with flash storage

Yes, you can. The type of storage on which you install is not relevant, as long as it is connected to an 'internal' storage control. Windows licensing restricts its installation on external/portable disks. Windows-to-go is the only legal means to do that.

  • HT5639 can i install windows xp with bootcamp

can i install windows xp with bootcamp? Which version bootcamp should I go for?

Depending on which Mac mini you have and your OS X version, you can install Windows XP or not in Boot Camp.
First, open  > About this Mac, and tell me what OS X version you have. If it's 10.7 or 10.8, you can't install Windows XP. Also, if you have a Mid 2011 or newer Mac mini, you can't install it too. In this case, you have to use Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox, and install Windows XP on a virtual machine.
If you have 10.5 or 10.6, you can install Windows XP in Boot Camp. Have a look at this website to see which Boot Camp version you need > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634

Advanced Network: Proxy Settings, I uncheck "Auto Proxy detection" and make sure you have the interface you use selected and none others.
"Go into System Preferences - Network - Advanced - Proxies  Uncheck "Auto Proxy Discovery", click OK, Apply"
After Unchecking "Auto Proxy Discovery" I also had to Uncheck "Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV)" and then Restart Boot Camp Assistant.
odiggy's comment and tried restarting Boot Camp Assistant. That did the trick, even though the Auto Proxy Discovery checkbox ended up the same as it started.  Windows support software is now downloading...  if you're downloading to an external drive make sure there's a least 1 GB of free space because the WindowsSupport folder is around 700 MB (format as FAT and MBR).

Also, Change Domain Name Servers to OpenDNS IP address servers - that should be at the router firewall rather than the OS but may be in both for some people. You may be using the defaults your ISP uses, save those if you want, and try these:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Make sure you are not using LittleSnitch or Symantec (probably other 3rd party firewall)

  • Installing Windows XP with Bootcamp .....Problem,Please help

I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard 10.5.6 and have tried to install Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. I downloaded the Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide and have followed the instructions to the letter.
My problem is that when the install is completed and the computer reboots I get a black screen with the following,"Unable to boot from drive, Disk error, press any key to restart".
When I press "any key" nothing happens and the only way to reboot is to turn off the computer and turn it back on holding down the option key.
It then presents the Mac and Windows HD. If I choose the Windows HD the same as above happens again. If I choose the Mac HD the computer operates as normal.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions Cheers

    Thanks for you reply.
I have done everything as per the printed instructions.
It does not halt when I select the target partition.
Yes the Bootcamp volume is on the desktop
I am making it the suggested 32 GB.
I never get to the option to choose NTFS.
I get the black screen and message after Windows install is "completed" and the computer tries to reboot to Windows.
If I try to rebot and choose the Windows partition (After closing down and holding down the "option" key) I keep getting the black screen and message) and can go no further.

  • Mac gets blue screen while installing Windows 7 with bootcamp

I had a problem while trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on my MacBook mid-2010.  When i would create the partition using bootcamp assistant and my computer restarted into the install process, i would get a blue screen.  The blue screen would occur after my computer restarted and was completing the installation.  If I try to reboot the machine, it gives me an error "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error.  Windows installation cannot proceed.  To install Windows, click ok to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."  I first tried this on yosemite, but when it was not working I tried wiping the hard drive and i installed mavericks.  I got the same problem, so it does not have to do with the OS.  I have installed Windows 7 32-bit on this computer before.  But i still get the same error with 32-bit also.  I know that this computer supports windows 7 and 64-bit too.  If anyone know why this might be happening and how i can fix it, please let me know.  Thank you.

It is good to see that it is indeed a USB2.
The support software on the USB is used in the Pre-boot environment setup and provides drivers for Apple specific hardware, GPU, BT, Mouse, etc. You can verify that by looking at the USB contents. The DVD contains generic drivers when hardware is not recognized as defaults to use. Apple does enough 'secret sauce' to make them different. The following does not explicitly state the USB2 need when using the DVD Installer and mentions W8 (not W7).
From Boot Camp: Creating an ISO image from a Windows installation DVD - Apple Support
Insert a blank USB 2 flash drive that is a least 16GB in size into a USB port on the computer. Boot Camp Assistant uses this drive to store the Windows 8 install media and support drivers during installation of Windows.
Note: This flash drive needs to be formatted for the FAT32 file system and must use the Master Boot Record partitioning scheme. Use Disk Utility to check the format of the flash drive before proceeding, and partition or erase the flash drive if necessary.
I suspect the GPU is not getting the correct driver and the Installer fails. The Generic VGA should work. From the OS X side, can you see files in your BC volume? If yes, can you look for logs in the BC volume at the following locations.
    ./Windows/Inf/setupapi.dev.log
    ./Windows/Inf/setupapi.offline.log
    ./Windows/Inf/setupapi.setup.log
    ./Windows/Logs/SetupCleanupTask/setupact.log
