first, erase FuisionDrive because I want to control what thing move to SSD or HDD I don´t want OSX decide for me. Delete CoreStorage and install new OSX by USB Mavericks. Finally have 2 devices: 128SSD + 3Tb HDD:
Well, When I start BootCamp, I only can choose install Windows in SSD resizing this device... or delete HDD partition but this is not possible because in Storage partition (disk1s2), have all my files (user home, folders, download, documents...)
How I can build partition HDD to install Windows 8.1 using bootcamp?
Other option It´s resize manually HDD and install Windows use boot with ALT and select USB bootable Windows and them install rEFIT to boot manage.

Because of a Microsoft restriction, Windows can't be installed on an external drive (there are workarounds, but you need Windows). Apart from that, Boot Camp only works with the hard drive where you have installed OS X, so you can't use it to install Windows on an external drive

"No bootable disk" when installing Windows 7 on Macbook Pro (HDD caddy)

Here's the deal.
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro (8,1) that I bought a HDD caddy for. It's beautiful.
I replaced the superdrive with a 1tb hard drive and it's wonderful. I want to install Windows 7 via bootcamp on it. I go through the steps (create install usb, download extra files, partition the drive) and once it restarts I get the following error:
I press keys, reinsert the usb stick repeatably, and finally hold down the power button to restart. After holding down option to bring up the boot menu, this is what I get:
Where did my other disks go?! I boot normally and check Disk Utility and, look at that, there they all are!
I've gone through variations of this for 3 days now. Please help!

I recently ran into a very similar issue. Windows, or at least Boot Camp, will not boot into an HDD that is installed in the optical drive bay. I do not know why this is, or if there is a way to fix it; all I know is that as soon as I moved my HDD back to the HDD bay, Windows started booting again.
Boot camp has many issues with MacBooks whose optical drives have been replaced, which are well-documented on the web. This article (and its comments) describe many of them, and the workarounds that people have found for them. That said, I think that Boot Camp has improved with Mountain Lion (or possibly with the continued proliferation of optical drive-less machines from Apple), because I was able to boot the Windows installer just fine from the optical drive that I had removed and placed in an external USB enclosure. (Not that it did me any good - I received the dreaded error 0x8030024 when I tried to actually install Windows.)
What worked for me was to install Boot Camp before removing my optical drive, use WinClone to make a copy of that installation, and then clone the image back to the drive once I'd gotten my drives in place.
So, in summary:
Try putting Boot Camp on the drive that's in your HDD bay.
The article I linked describes many of the issues you might run into and provides workarounds for them.
Worst case, you may have to reinstall the optical drive in order to install boot camp, then use WinClone to move the installation to any drive you wish. (Hang onto this image for all future Boot Camp installations.)

Before I do that, how do I make sure that I clean install windows 7 on my SSD drive, and have my current drive set as a backup drive for data/programs that I don't use much? I need to keep the data that's on the HDD right now, can I transfer data between the drives?

Installing Windows to 3.5" 1TB HDD

I know this has been asked before, but I must ask again. I have a new rMBP and do not have space to waste on the internal SSD for a Boot Camp partition. I have a 1TB Western Digital Black 7200 RPM Drive that I would really like to install Windows 8 on. Ideally, I'd like to do it over USB 3.0, as I will not need very high I/O out of my computer (no gaming or anything too data-intensive). If that is not possible or is highly inconvenient, then I don't mind connecting over Thunderbolt either. Have any of you ever done this? And if so, I'd really appreciate to hear the general outline of your procedure so I can do it right. Thanks!

1. Install Windows on SSD.
2. Use Winclone (currently USD 29.99) to make a backup.
3. Restore Windows to the external HDD.
4. Free-up SSD disk space.

The Best way to get it to install is to simply unplug the other drive(s) in your mac except the new one. When you boot hold down either the 'C' key to boot directly to CD or hold 'ALT' and select the CD. One you get into windows setup make sure to delete and partitions on the new drive if any exsist and don't creat a new one, just select the bare drive to install to and windows will do the rest.
If you have a problem booting to the CD then its a different issue, some Macs have issues booting Windows 7 CDs because of the UEFI support on them. Apple uses their own cutom implmetation of EFI which is not UEFI compliant so it causes issues.

I have a 20 inch iMac with Mac OS 10.5.7 and all updates. I am thinking about upgrading from vista on boot camp to Windows 7. I know what to do but i wanted to hear some personal experiences from other people. Also, a long tome ago, I tried to install Windows XP but realized half way through that I did not have a product key. It turns out I did not need one, but I tried to cancel the installation process and all I would get was "Press any key to restart" and I would be sent back to the beginnign of the installation. I was trapped in a loop. For future reference, how do u "escape" this loop? Thanks

You 'escape' by not killing it. And most people have to redo their entire install to get things working properly.

Mavericks lost after install Windows 8.1 on other partition

So, I have MacBook pro 15' retina display running Mavericks. Then I need to have Windows 8.1 on my Mac as well for college, so I decided to have dual boot Mavericks and 8.1.
After I successfully install my Windows, then I restart my computer cause I need to access my Mac. But it doesn't drive me to refind, instead it opens the windows directly.
Then I tried to press alt/option button on booting, and I only found my windows partition there.
Is there any solution to get my Mavericks back? Is it gone? Why is it gone?
How to avoid this problem in the future?

If your OSX partition is gone you have done something wrong when using Boot Camp Assistant. Look in Disk Utilities to see what partitions you have on your drive.

Installing Windows XP on 2nd HDD

I tried searching and reading prior post, but could not find an answer, so any one with knowledge, please help.
Question #1: I want to install Windows XP on a 2nd internal HDD, to keep it separate from the HDD that has OS X. Do I use BootCamp (BC), and during some point of the installation, BC will ask which drive I want to use for Windows XP? If not, how do I install Windows XP onto a separate HDD?
Question #2: Since my PC uses a different style of HDD than the Mac Pro, if I pull the HDD from my PC that has Windows XP set up on it and using an external HDD enclosure to run the drive, can I connect it (firewire) to my Mac Pro and simple copy the contents to the 2nd internal HDD? Will I then be able to boot from either OS at start-up?

Print out the PDF that comes with BootCamp Assistant.
The drive needs to be formatted as GUID first if you want to use only half or part of it. If you choose MRB, then the whole drive gets used. Though you could just format as two FAT partitions and go from there.
BootCamp fully supports installing on 2nd hdd.
Copy? as in using Norton Ghost or similar program. But Windows can't be booted from any form of external hdd, not normally or easily.

Installing Windows Vista on external HDD

I know there's going to be problems and most people would be happy just to say 'it can't be done', but I really need to install Windows Vista on an external HDD using FireWire 800.
I have read some brief info on the Internet that some people have achieved this for Windows XP using an external USB 2 mass storage device 'HDD' (and even for large capacity flash drives).
Personally, I only intend to use a hand full of programs for Vista on a regular basis and prefer not to install what maybe a more stable and reliable XP version of Windows due to having such a dull looking interface that makes you want to jump off the nearest cliff (the interface and look is that depressing.. Really!). Anyway, I have the new MacBook Pro 17" 'unibody' and an external buss powered (on 800) G-Tech G-Drive mini with Firewire 800/400 & USB 2. I have already formatted the external G-Drive mini and installed Mac OS-X 10.5 on it and it works flawlessly via Firewire 800 once you've chosen it as the 'start-up disk' within System Settings (great for testing and not worrying about things too much if there's problems, having kept the MacBook Pro's own internal HDD intact and clean). I plan on partitioning the external G-Drive's 250GB capacity equally and thus have the mentioned Mac OS-X on one partion and hopefully eventually Windows Vista on the other equal partion.
This arrangement (if possible) I feel compelled to do because even though I can very easily install Windows Vista onto my MacBook Pro's internal HDD using Bootcamp with minimal hassel, I really don't want to infect my MacBook Pro's internal drive with Windows and all the troubles that Windows can bring. I feel I must keep my MacBook's internal drive clean and trouble free from any possible Windows viruses and spyware, besides I need the maximum capacity of the internal drive. If this all worked, then I would dismount the internal drive within disk utility once booted up in Windows, thus keeping it isolated from any Windows prone attacks or problems.
Only thing now is I have to find a way if there is one, Boot Camp won't partition the external FireWire 800 drive to ready it for Windows and Windows Vista may not have adequate drivers to enable it's boot from FireWire 800, although I could resort to the slower USB 2 interface that the drive also has on-board.
Anyone with any solutions? Would using Drive Genius to partition the external drive (on the fly) and readying the intended Windows Vista partition to a FAT 32 structure, help start the process?

For now, I've had no choice but to install Vista on my MacBook Pro's internal drive using BootCamp, it will only be for the short term until I can find a way to do this on the external drive... it's also another worry to know that I may have problems with the 'boot table' after a few months, as you previously mentioned.
So setting up Windows Vista, updating, tweaking settings and getting it all working so that it functions properly to a half decent state is such a lengthy laborious tediously frustrating task with windows and taking huge amounts of time that it reminded me of just how much I have recently grown to hate windows and it now amazes me to think that until a year and a half ago I wouldn't move/budge from windows because of all the PC programs I had, but now I'm overwhelmingly relieved I made the jump and wonder why I put myself uneccessarily through so much pain and tourment.. well, even now windows isn't giving up without a fight as it continues to leave it's legacy because although I've now got it reasonably functioning under 'BootCamp' having installed Vista on my Mac's internal drive (for now), windows now bombards me with a routine of error messages upon boot-up stating:-
"Warning: Unrecognized partition table for drive 80. Please rebuild it using a Microsoft-compatible FDISK tool(err=4). Current C/H/S=266305/255/63 (hd0,2) Filesystem type is ntfs, partition type 0x7 chainloader /bootmgr"
it then repeats that error message several times during a few black screens (not the infamous blue screen) and on one occasion the error message refers to "(hidden sectors=0x1ee648800)" and there's plenty more double dutch info before it finally load Vista.. (I've only had Vista installed on BootCamp for a couple of day's now - since this reply) I'm considering trying my luck with installing Vista 64bit edition, having read that it is compatible on the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro's.
Meanwhile... with regard to using an external hard drive for a possible bootable Windows Vista over Firewire 800, I may have to consider the two 'close' alternative methods for doing this.. the first being the alleged workaround-fix shared on the internet for doing this using the USB 2 conection method, unfortunately this requires some time spent on editing some of the startup/installation sequence files which have to be extracted from the Windows installation '.iso' disk image using winiso, then edited and then inserted back into the '.iso' Windows install disk to burn onto a new DVD, trouble is this takes time which I don't have and it may only be a workaround solution for the very dull and bland looking windows XP version only which I don't want... Therefore I might have to go along with the more expensive option of having to invest in a slightly (actually a lot) more costly version of small portable external bus powered hard drive, the G-Tech G-Raid mini2 which has the inclusion of the eSATA interface making it a quad interface, therefore possibly enabling windows to boot from this as windows requires SATA connection for boot-ability. The only drawback for me personally with this second method is a). that I've already purchased the G-Drive mini1, b). the G-Raid mini2 is very costly, c). the mini2 is double the size being double the thickness and therefore not as tiny as the mini1 which you can squeeze into your MacBook Pro case's pocket, d). the mini2 will have a heavier battery drain having its two disks spinning instead of one like the mini1, and e). you have to have two cables connected between MacBook and mobile hard drive instead of one, one cable drawing the power from the Firewire 800 bus and the second cable transferring the data between the eSATA connection (if it works).
Alternatively.. Apple may save the day and at some point release a driver for BootCamp to enable Windows Vista 'Firewire 800 boot-ability support'. That would be very good! (but doubt that would ever happen with Apple's strange outlook on Firewire of late)
Or, G-Tech may put an eSATA connection interface/port on an updated version of the tiny, less power draining and more budget conscious G-Drive mini1 in the near future! (but that may be unlikely as well)
So, I'm not sure what to do at this moment.

Ok First off
Check your BIOS by tapping F2 on startup Make sure under Configuration Tab the SATA Controller is set for RAID
Installation:
Set your computer to Boot on your USB drive(Where your Windows 7 installer is and start the Set up as Normal)
- You will reach a point where it will ask you where to install your windows 7
If it shows none "Like no HDD or SSD Being Detected" Then Download and extract this to a separate USB Drive(using another computer).then plug it in to your S300. Then on the Windows 7 installation click Browse, go to that USB drive and to the folder where you placed that downloaded file, Windows will identify it, make sure it is clicked and click Next. Then all of your drives and respective partitions will appear.
- Delete Partitions On your SSD and HDD
- Create your Partition on the HDD and Install Windows on your HDD then continue and complete as Normal Installation and Reboot.
-You should have Windows 7 booting from your HDD from this point-
Download and install Rapid Storage from the link I provided Above.
Now Launch the Intel Rapid Storage Technology." This can be found in your Start Menu under the Intel folder. It should be automatically set up to accelerate your main drive. You will also see it has identified your SSD as the proper size, 24GB (24GB).
If not, it is relatively easy to set up. Choose the drive you want to accelerate, and the SSD you want to use as cache.
then your done Caching the HDD to your SSD and make sure to install All driver from Support.lenovo.com.
Rapid Start this is optional if you want to set that up Just follow this method again and continue starting from the Rapidstart part.

Windows 8 dissapeared after installing windows 7

Hi I have built a new computer. The computer have 3 HDDs. I installed windows 8.1 pro first. Everything works fine. Then I unplugged the first HDD and installed windows 7 ultimate on anothed HDD. After the installation, I put my HDD back. From that point,
my computer can read the disk where windows 8 is installed. But I cannot boot into it. It keeps on booting into windows 7. I have used the Bootrec.exe/ScanOs in repair disc cmd. The simply found nothing.
One more thing. My computer's Hardware is
Motherboard: AsRock Fatal1ty H97 Killer
CPU: Intel I5 4690
Graphic: Galaxy GTX 750 Ti
Ram: 8x2 DDR3 1600 Kingston Hyper X
I thing this is good enough for windows aero. But the aero peek, transparency is all disabled. I have choose the aero theme at personalisation and also run the system performance test. I got 7.9. I also try the troubleshoot tools of aero, nothing shows up.
What can I do?

According to your description, the current boot manager should be Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 couldn't be recognised.
Please try to use the command bcdboot x:\windows instead to repair Windows boot manager for test.
Open Command Prompt with admin in Windows 7.
For your Aero problem, According to your description, I think it should be Graphic Card driver problem, if not, it's mostly hardware problem.

Prohibitory sign when installing Windows

Hi,
I am having huge problems installing Windows 7.
I have a perfectly good Windows 7 DVD which boots on other devices, yet it doesn't on mine. First off it started with spitting out the DVD (which I can understand ), so I thought its my superdrive. I went and bought a new drive today, except this is a SATA drive and tried to boot from there. It loads the DVD fast and easy within OSX, but when I reboot and try to boot from the disk it hops to a flashing Apple logo flashing with a Prohibitory sign (circle with a slash).
I think I have tried about everything. The following scenarios I have tried:
Partitioning the OSX Boot disk with a bootcamp disk (50/50)
Using disk utility, formatting a 750GB disk as FAT with MBR
Using bootcamp to start the instalation
Rebooting holding ALT and chosing the Windows DVD as boot source
Rebooting holding C
The above using an original Windows 7 disk
The above using an original Windows XP disk
The above usign an original downloaded Windows 8 disk
The above using an illigal download of Winodws 7 (just for testing purpose)
The above using a burned dvd with Debian 5 Netinstall
The above both with a new DVD drive and the old Superdrive
The above with a USB installation disk (but found out that only MBA's support USB boot)
The above removing the lion boot HDD and installing Snow Leopard on an other HDD
The only boot that works is using the orignal OSX boot disk. Tried with Leopard and Snow Leopard but get the same results.
I am running out of options here and would like to install Windows (don't ask why! )

So I have tried to restore my firmware using the 1.5 Restore CD (burned to a DVD) and holding the power button, but it doesn't restore. It gives the tone, searched the DVD and boots OSX normally. OSX does read the DVD and shows it correctly.
I have a Mac Pro 3,2 with the following setup:
2x 2.8GHz Intel XEON Quad Core CPU
4GB (4x 1GB) PC6400 DDR2 ECC (FB_DIMM)
3.1TB HDD (1TB Seagate + 1TB Seagate + 350GB WD, +750GB Seagate)
Original Superdrive
Liteon DVD-RW (http://www.webhallen.com/hardvara/106943-lite-on_intern_sata_dvdrw_24x-svart) brand new! (since the superdrive has problems)
ATI Radeon HD 2600
30" Cinema HD
The mac has the latest version of Lion installed (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)).
Please, does anybody have any ideas? I am desperate =S

UEFI 2.0 is Intel name and standard for what Early Mac Pro 2008 uses.
EFI 1.x is Apple naming, not the same.
The issue with booting Windows 7 64-bit, MacPro 2.1 can't boot from Vista SP1 64-bit and later w/o changing the DVD EFI boot menu code. That is not true on a 2008.
Half the time or more I am not at a desk but 'single finger' typing on tablet.

Not sure why the snide aside about opinion. We had one person that wanted to flash his Mac, no matter what, and change processor card, turn a 4,1 into a hackin-5,1.
I see people try to use FW-DVD and have trouble, so when trouble comes calling, disconnect. And an ATTO or Areaca card would be one item to include in hardware profile.
Intel - Microsoft UEFI and Apple are Apple and Oranges different. When I with Mac Pro 1,1 tried, I had to run down Imgburn and all the articles I could. One though is no longer online that helped a lot of peopole ("Jowie - "Select CDROM 1 or 2" was a common issue, and is the EFI bug). Yours, is different and never heard of 3.1 having an issue - though I am seeing trouble now with Windows 7 SP1 64-bit on 2011 Macs. So keep that in mind.

Trying to install Windows via Bootcamp (dual SSD, optibay)

I have an MBP 17" late 2011. I am running Lion 10.7.4. and I recently bought two Samsung 830 Series SSD drives to put into the MBP. I want to put one in the The second one I want to go into the optibay, so I bought a drive caddy. I am not able to install Bootcamp because I don't have an optical drive. I've tried a few software mods, such as adding 'mbasd=1' and here (www.codez4mac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?uid=225402&f=212&t=61921&start=0) to create a windows 7 USB install disk on Lion, and here (sudo pico /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist) to try and get the external superdrive to work and others I've seen on various communities, but nothing seems to work. I can't use the Parallels route because my version of Windows is an Upgrade version.
A few things you should know: (1) I was able to get the superdrive working on my MBP using the software mod above, and I was excited to finally get Wondows installed on the second SSD. However, when Bootcamp goes to install it, it hangs at a black screen with "_" blinking infinitely. I feel like I'm close to finding a solution, but so far no luck. I'm close to just packing up the SSDs and returning them, even though I really like the performance I see.
I am not a beginner, but I am not an advanced programmer, so if you have ideas or fixes, please send them my way.
Here is the set up I want to accomplish:
1) Set up Bootcamp partition on second SSD. Drive #1 will be Lion, drive #2 will be a file store with Bootcamp partition also.
2) If using Bootcamp I can use my upgrade version of Windows. I can do this the traditional way of installing the older version, then the upgrade of Wondows, or simply install the upgrade version clean, then immediately reinstall it as an upgrade and the activation is clean. Before I get any grief on that, there are two things: (a) I've installed Windows several times on other machines this way and it is best because it is a clean install and (b) this was recommended to me by a MS technician when I had to call in a while back.
3) If/Once Windows is installed on MBP's second SSD (optibay), I will be using an external USB superdrive or a USB DVD/CD drive I own.
In trying to work all of this out over the past several days, there are a few observations I have:
A) I am baffled that the USB Superdrive won't work on anything except Mini and Air (even though I got it to work). I don't want to hear the "reasons" Apple does this, becuase I should be able to boot from ANY USB drive, like any other computer. What happens if/when my MBP's superdrive gives it up and no longer works? Drop another $2500+ on another computer?

Middle of night but fwiw as long as you don't have two drives both using GUID you can do this. But you can't during install have OS X on A and Windows on B. Get Windows installed you will have to wipe out the one with Lion or disconnect it or something. Then reconnect or restore w/ Carbon Copy Cloner.
Format the one with Lion to MBR
BCA is not needed when you are not splitting a drive between both Windows DVD can be used to format the entire SSD.
Are you familiar with Carbon Copy cloner?
