Install windows on iMac Late 2009 without Optical drive

Hi, i have an iMac 27 i5 11.1 where i want to install windows 7 (or 8). I already did it 2 years ago without problems, but in the mean time i formatted the drive and my optical drive stopped working so i replaced it with an ssd.
I'm trying to install windows but i don't know how without a superdrive. I tried with an external usb dvd drive and it didn't work (you can't install windows from a non apple dvd drive, it is a known problem) but it don't work, so i tried to create an usb installation key of windows with microsoft official tool and also with boot camp tool, both doesn't work (when i select them on the boot i get an apple alternated with a prohibition mark and a folder with a question mark, exactly as with the dvd drive). So i thought that maybe if i can install windows on an external drive and boot it from there i will be able to launch the install directly from windows skipping the problem, but you can't install windows on an external drive..
I'm running out of ideas, someone can help me installing windows on my imac? thanks in advance

You can't install Windows on your machine as it stands.
There is your answer, now stop stressing and move on without it.
Sure, good answers.
Apple doesn't want to = You can't
Apple doesn't let you = You shouldn't
Too bad i made it. So it is possible, even if you and apple said it's not.
I installed virtualbox, created a virtual machine with the full disk access, started installing windows, when the copy of the files ended and the vm was rebooting i simply closed it and rebooted my imac and finished the installation directly on the imac, everything went well...
Luckily i didn't take apple's word as a written law and i use my own brain..
If you had posted in a Virtual Machine forum, or asked if you could install Windows using other than Bootcamp Assistant then someone would have advised you to use a Virtual Machine like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox. But you posted in the Bootcamp forum so we assumed you wanted to create and use a Bootcamp partition.
So the answers provided you, based on your questions in this Bootcamp forum were spot on and appropriate.

Can I factory restore an IMAC Late 2009 without the orginal DVD's? I was given a computer and want to remove the previous owners user login and passwords. I want a fresh install like it was bought new.

You can create a new Admin User in System Preferences then delete the current User. This will give you a clean User but the base system files might have extensions etc installed.
If you upgrade to Mavericks, then you would wipe the computer giving you exactly what you want.
While your computer might meet the requirements, also check your applications for Mavericks compatibility here:  http://roaringapps.com/
Make sure all your software like Microsoft Office and Adobe CS Suites is compatible with Mavericks.
    OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
              ▪          iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
              ▪          MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)

              ▪          Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
              ▪          Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
              ▪          Xserve (Early 2009)

              ▪          2 GB or more of memory  <--- I suggest 4GB as minimum

  • How to install windows 8 using bootcamp with no optical drive

    Hi,
I have a mac book pro 17" late 2011 with Mountain Lion installed.
I have previously installed a windows 7 using bootcamp without an optical drive by creating an install disk as part of boot camp option.
I still don't have an optical drive.
The other day I removed my Windows 7 since I want to try Windows 8 but when I try using boot camp to install windows 8 it is asking for an optical drive and the option to create an install disk is not available anymore.
    Any idea on this issue?
    Thanks much

It should be straight forward and no different, except you are burning an ISO and that always needs to be done at slowest burn speed for any version of Windows.Otherwise it won't work (even if it manages to install it will fail on restart or some other point).

  • IMac G5 education without optical drive, what can I do?

I've just bought on ebay an iMac G5 1,6 Ghz (without isight) with the motherboard dead. It is very easy to open.
What was my surprise to see that there was no optical drive...In fact, it could receive one : the slot is there, the IDE cable too, the sloat-loading hole too, but...it is impossible to introduce any CD or DVD because there is a plastic and metallic band all around that makes it impossible....
As I didn't understand, I made a research on the web anf found out the answer....Incerdible! I didn't know that Apple had made an iMac G5 model for education, without optical drive : from outside, impossible to distinguish it, but when you try to introduce a CD or DVD in the slot, you can't!
So the only solution is to buy an external firewire drive?
I tried to see if it was possible to put out the metallic band to free the access for one CD, but it seems impossible! The metallic piece is riveted, or something like that....
    Does anyone has tried something?
Thanks, I apologize if my english is not very good

I've just bought on ebay an iMac G5 1,6 Ghz (without isight) with the motherboard dead.
I assume you managed to fix that "motherboard dead" problem, since there would be no point in installing an optical drive in a Mac that does not work.
If you can't get the slot open because it is intentionally closed, maybe you can get an external optical drive and stick something else into that internal space. For example, will it fit a 2.5-inch (laptop size) IDE hard drive for additional internal storage? Or you can get an IDE-to-compact-flash adapter card and give your iMac a solid state flash drive (like MacBook Air); CF cards are getting pretty cheap, even at the 16GB size, and you can get even larger ones for a higher price. Maybe you can even boot from it.
    Just some ideas...

  • Windows 7 won't boot without optical drive (SSD, Dual HD)

I recently purchased an SSD and an optical drive HD caddy so I could use two HDs on my macbook pro. I installed the SSD in the normal HD slot in order to install Windows via optical drive. When I move my SSD over to the optical drive slot, Windows hangs on a black screen before the Windows logo and never boots. I tried moving the SSD back to the main HD slot but without the optical drive installed, the same symptoms occur - no boot. This leads me to believe that Windows will not boot without the optical drive (which was present during installation).
Perhaps this is a problem with primary/slave drive settings? I learned today that the intel chipsets in macbooks do not have BIOS for Windows and do not allow you to access the EFI. Not sure if that would help anyways.
Has anyone experienced this and/or have a solution?

I am suffering the same issue. Macbook pro 15 inch late 2009 with 8gig ram. I have a 256gb ssd newly installed, a dead superdrive (thanks a bunch for the drop in build quality without the drop in price apple) and an optibay caddy which i intend on having my 500gb 7200rpm previous HDD installed in. I had the normal annoying issues trying to get bootcamp working with an external optical drive. I then had the bright idea of taking my external optical drive case apart and discovered its a sata drive with a sata to usb convertor attached. Got bootcamp/win7 installed fine using the superdrives sata connector with the optical drive (essentially having a temporary internal optical drive again).
OSX and windows function fine as long as the optical drive stays connected. There does not need to be a disc in the drive, i thought windows might be getting boot info from the win disc. Osx boots fine if its just the ssd. Windows hangs with a white screen right at the beginning. Also doesnt boot using boot menu via alt key. Nor using the reEFIt boot menu (installed later now deleted).
Disk utility says it cannot repair the windows partition and says to back up the data and reformat the drive. This also happens if i use a normal sata drive. I am attempting a few more ideas but at this rate i will be virtual machining windows instead. Far from ideal but seeing as my windows pc is now officially no more and there are two pc only programs i need to use for university i dont have much choice i NEED windows. Anyone got a bright idea that may help?

  • Installing Windows 7 - New Mac Mini no Optical Drive

    Hello,
I would like to install a Windows 7 on a new 2011 no optical disk mini.
I am aware of how to do that, and what do I need to prepare, becouse there is not a optical disk in a mini.
Any ideas on if I can buy (download) a Windows 7 from www.microsoft.com and how to installed a downloaded package of Windows 7?
Anybody has successfully installed Windows 7?
Is there are way to install Windowx XP SP2 from CD (wireless shared cd from other computer)
    Thanks

I think your best option is either buy an external dvd drive or if you have access to another Mac that does have a dvd drive, boot it into firewire disc mode (restart holding down the F key until you see a FireWire logo), using the appropriate firewire cable (depends on what kind of firewire connections the Macs have, 400 to 800 or 800 to 800) connect the two Macs together and the Mini will see the drives of the Mac booted into FireWire disc mode. Insert dvd and go about installing Windows...
On another note, I think Lion's version of BootCamp requires Windows 7 to install. If you already have Windows setup on a Mac with SnowLeopard and upgrade then it will work as normal, something to do with installing requires Windows 7.

  • How to install windows 7 on Imac late 2009 using Vmware/Vbox

Hey guys. Here's the thing. I've installed Windows 8 on my imac late 2009 but then i realized that there's no bootcamp drivers for it (check image).
everything works fine except for the video drivers that crash everytime when i install any driver (bootcamp or manually).
So I've searched on many forums n i found a guy that could do that by using Vmware/Virtualbox by accessing the full disk n installing it from there.
    Here's what we wrote -> (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1526883)
"Thanks for the suggestions, but installing from usb wasn't working, and refit didn't recognise the external dvd drive too (it was in the list, but when i tried to load it i got an error).
But i found a solution, not usual procedure but still good and easy to do.
I installed virtualbox, created a virtual machine with the full disk access (you'll have to unmount all the partitions first and run virtualbox as root), started installing windows, when the copy of the files ended and the vm was rebooting i simply closed it and rebooted my imac and finished the installation directly on the imac, everything went well...
    Thanks again for the help"
    Important notes :
    - My superdrive is broken
    - I can't boot efi windows 7 (cause it needs efi 2.0)
    So i might ask u 2 things..
1- Is there a way that i can install all those drivers on windows 8.
2- Can u describe how he did that with Vmware/Virtualbox?

I can't. Just like i said. My superdrive is broken so the only way is to boot from usb but my imac's efi firmware is 1.0 and to boot a windows 7 efi you must have at least efi firmware 2.0. I managed to install windows 8 cause it needed efi firmware 1.0 that's why.

  • HT5628 No support of Windows 8 for late 2009 iMac?

I have an iMac late 2009, 2,8 GHz and i wonder why Windows 8 is not supported by Apple. After only 3 years no support by Apple.
A Mac Pro from 2009 get support, why?
Thank you Apple, this was my last computer bought from you.

    Read projectRelentless thread here:

on how to install Windows 8 on non supported Macs.
BTW the Tackpad ++ drivers referenced Csound1 DO NOT work on the Magic Trackpad as Vladimir is concentracting on the MacBook Macbook Pro trackpads only for now.
There are some workarounds for the Madic Trackpad but they pale in comparison to Trackpad++

I followed your instructions and installed Developer Suite 10G on Windows Vista Home Premium edition. I have Oracle 11G DB running on the same machine.
    Two points, Steve:
    1. When I tried to set the maximum virtual memory to 6110 an error message displayed from Windows and told me that I can't set the maximum virtual memory to more than 4096. I set it to 4090 and it worked and I got nothing wrong during the installation process.
    2. After installing JInitiator and disabling Java on Firefox I called the http://127.0.0.1:8889/forms/frmservlet page and everything seemed to be OK because the Oracle Forms Services logo appeared and then a successful installation message appeared , but as I clicked (ok) to continue a gray screen appeared inside the browser (like the one displayed when you try to run a Java applet inside a browser) and then I wait to death till something appears but sadly nothing. I just get a blank gray screen inside my Firefox browser.
Do you have any idea what to do to solve the problem?

  • 27in iMac (late 2009) ATI 4850 drivers problem in Windows 7

This iMac is less than a month old. Windows 7 was working fine until a couple of days ago. While at the Windows 7 desktop the screen pixlated and froze. A tip bubble appeared in the notification bar that said the ATI driver quit but was recovered. The screen went black then restored itself. A moment later the whole thing occurred again. Is this a known issue? Is there a fix? Thanks for any help.

    BANDING AND DRIVER CRASHING SOLVED:
I bought the following iMac on April 18, 2010 to run Windows 7 and Autodesk REVIT 2011.
    27" iMac (Late 2009)
    Intel Core i7, quad-core, 2.8GHz
    8GB (4x2GB) memory
    1TB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB Display Adapter
    Apple Magic Mouse
    Apple Wireless Keyboard
Apple BootCamp with Windows 7 Ultimate
Installed OSX, downloaded and installed all updates.
    Installed BootCamp 3.1
Installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and had the problem of the black screen during install. This was solved with the fix from apple support (copy latest drivers to a flash drive and continue to install windows). This resulted in apple windows driver 8.681.0.0 and the 16 bit color with banding. Rolled back the driver to 8.661.0.0. The banding issue was solved, but then had intermittent crashing (reset of the driver) in Chrome and REVIT 2011. This driver caused yellow "dots", then lockup and generally would reset. Very disruptive to REVIT.
    SOLUTION:
Went to ATI website and downloaded Catalyst 10.4, then manually installed ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850 display driver version 8.723.0.0. This display driver has 32 bit color, does NOT exhibit the color banding and has not had screen flicker, driver resets, or crashing in any programs run so far. I use this computer only for Autodesk REVIT 2011. The ATI HD 4850 is not officially supported by Autodesk, but I am able to run REVIT 2011 with hardware acceleration and anti-aliasing with no problems. So far that has been only for one day, but was not able to go more than a few minutes with the previous drivers.
I have not run any speed benchmarks yet, but compared to my Windows 32 bit XP machine, the performance is much improved.

  • Can I install Windows without optical Driver

    Hi!
I have a Macbook pro Early 2008 - MB134LL/A but its optical driver cannot read any disc. Now I want to install Windows via BootCamp but it cannot. Anybody know how can I install Windows without optical Driver? I tried to boot by USBflash, USB DVD Driver but it cannot boot.
I think that does external optical drivers via firewire work?
    Thanks alot!

Thank you for your reply, and the information.  This is what I came up with:
I added the strings as instructed, however when I went to sign the script in terminal, I was told:
/Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app: replacing existing signature
/Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app: code object is not signed at all
    In subcomponent: /Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app/Contents/info.plist
Also, here are screen captures of the lines that I added.  Mine are the top string entries:
Thank you for your help, thus far!

  • IMac late 2009 reads only 2GB RAM,I have re-installed the card 10 times now,what else could I do?

iMac late 2009 reads only 2GB RAM,I have re-installed the card 10 times now, what else could I do?

Please give us some more details on what exactly has gone wrong with your iMac.
What size RAM module/s are you trying to install and where did you purchase the RAM module/s from?
RAM has to be installed in matched size pairs.
Make sure the RAM module clicks into place. You need to apply a little bit of force to get the module to slide in and clIck into its module slot location.
Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
If you purchased RAM from ANY other source and still can't get the RAM to work, return it for a full refund and buy RAM from the sources I have listed.

  • IMac Late 2009 i7-2.8Ghz Poor Performance

My iMac Late 2009 seems to run very slowly after a clean install of OSX Mavericks. I am not sure that happened after the clean install. But now i have noticed it.
I am using mainly photoshop. Everything is sluggish. Moving or resizing layers.
Generally it runs very slow with everything.
The surprising fact is after i ran GeekBench.
The average score for 32-bit test is about 2000 for single-core and 7000 in multi-core
My results are: 700 for single-core and 3000 in multi-core.
Few users seem to have about the same results as me..
    My specs are:
    Late 2009 iMac
    intel i7 2.8Ghz
    12GB of Ram
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB

    Do you have any suggestions?
    it drive me crazy!!
I am considering a clean install but i want to wait for the Yosemite release.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Would like to install windows on iMac 1 TB?

would like to install windows on iMac 1 TB?

    (Borrowed from Kappy)
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • IMac late 2009 crashing with Maverick

I have a problem with my iMac (late 2009) that I cannot solve. It has become very slow, and crashes regularly after some time. Impossible to repair it, neither from the disk recovery partition, nor an external HD boot and using Disk Utility. So everytime I have to download Maverick again and install it to be able to work. I have noticed that after the fresh installation, and and a few days of working, Disk Utility shows problems with Disk permissions that need to be repaired. This occurs systematically.
To complete the story, the iMac was working fine when I bought it, but was returned to Apple for the HD substitution (Apple replacement programme). After this, and/or after installing Maverick (but I am not sure the 2 things are related), the problem started.
I have also tried PRAM resetting, no effect. Any suggestion?

For 2009 iMac owners on Mavericks, I recommend this procedure. Saved me a lot of frustration after almost a month of constant crashes and getting no work done.
I downloaded a temperature monitor to see what was happening. Before the fix, the temperature on the "north bridge heat sink” would just go up and up without fail. Particularly when using flash or a video related application. It would just keep rising until until the graphics card just shuts down.
It’s a 3 year old bug related to 10.6.3 and GPU drivers (ATI/AMD). Here’s the link to the guy who figured it out and should be testing for apple. You have to use terminal to solve the issue. He explains everything in detail.
    http://www.pauloamgomes.net/blog/fix-weird-os-x-freeze-imacs-late-2009
After the fix, the temperature at the graphics card stays level. I’ve also decided to use a fan control app for the moment so temperatures stay around 50 and the iMac runs like it should. Even in my hot room in the summer.
Been crashless since doing the procedure. Try it out. better than lugging a 27" iMac around town.
