Install Windows XP on External Hard Drive

Is there anyway I can install Windows XP on my WD 500GB External HD? It serves as my Time Machine for my MacBook, which doesn't have a whole lot of HDD space left. I'd like to install XP and be able to run it on my Mac, but it takes up way to much space.
If I can't install XP to my external drive, is there any suggestions for clearing space on my MacBook? Any way to remove unwanted applications?

I don't quite understand your answer, or maybe you don't quite understand my question. Here are a little more details.
I have an Early 2008 Macbook with a 160GB HDD with Tiger installed.
For BootCamp you need OSX Leopard since the BootCamp Beta from OSX Tiger no longer works.
I'm interested in running Windows XP on my MacBook, but I'm concerned with it taking up space on my already small HDD. However, I do have a 500GB external HDD that I have plenty of space on.
My question remains, is there anyway that I could install Windows XP on my external drive while keeping Leopard on my laptop HDD. Would I be able to use BootCamp to assist me. If not, how would I access/boot XP?
See my first post. Windows is not intended to be booted of an external harddisk.
This is prevented by Microsoft and BootCamp can not change this.
Windows XP itself needs about 10GB of harddisk space. Add to that the amount of disk space that will be used y the Windows programs you want to run plus the space used by the data files.
So something about 20-25GB for Windows might be sufficient.
How much free disk space do you have right now ?
What is 'eating' up your disk space ?
I know these are several questions, and difficult ones at that, but I believe there is an answer somewhere.
The answer is given, but the technical limitations of Windows prevent the answer from being what you want to hear.

  • How can I install window 8 on external hard drive on mac mini

So, I have mac mini and I'd like to install win8 on external hard drive and can anyone give me guides to do it?
also I wonder would I be able to run win 8 after installation using parallels desktop?
    thanks in advance

I have to agree that Windows8 is a waste of time, especially if you don't have a touch screen and compatible apps.
However, the latest version of Parallels supports running Windows8, Parallels can either run Windows from a 'virtual disk' file which can be stored wherever you want including on an external drive, or it can also be configured to run Windows from a Boot Camp partition created using Apple's Boot Camp Utility.
    See http://download.parallels.com/desktop/v7/update2/docs/en/Parallels%20Desktop%20U ser's%20Guide/32733.htm
In order to run Boot Camp from an external drive and therefore be able to setup the Boot Camp partition on the external drive you first have to install and run OS X on the external drive. Then the Boot Camp utility will let you add the Boot Camp partition on the external drive. You cannot run OS X and the Boot Camp utility from an internal drive and try adding the Boot Camp partition to the external drive. The Boot Camp Utility only lets you add the partition on the same physical drive it is running from.
Personally I have legal XP and Windows7 licenses (currently using Windows7) and even if the Windows8 upgrade was totally free of charge I would not bother with it. I would also not bother with it at work as an IT Manager.

  • Can I install Windows through an external hard-drive onto bootcamp?

Is there any way for me to install Windows onto my mac by using an external harddrive that contains the install files to windows 7?

    Welcome to Apple Communities
You can install it with a USB drive. Connect it, open Boot Camp Assistant and follow steps

  • Run windows 7 on external hard drive?

I'm purchasing a MAC mini to replace my G4 and PC. I would like to have Windows available for several applications (mainly for the kids) and am wondering if I could install windows on an external hard drive and run it through the Mini. I really don't want to partition the Mini's HD for both OS as I prefer to stay as far away from windows as possible. Thanks.

It all depends on the PC motherboard and BIOS, I don't even think MS has done anything draconian or such, and it is possible and actually easy, with the right X58 say motherboards (most). My Intel DX58SO I used to install via built in eSATA.
There is nothing wrong with or reason to fear Windows, but if kids want to play games, a VM isn't going to cut it. Buy a cheap mini just for Windows, or a PC, or run OS X off external drive and use the internal for Windows only.
Windows 7 + MS Security Essentials is solid and best yet and as easy to use and not all that different than Mac OS (and maybe has had more testing even). Hopefully computers can be seen for what they are, used as tools, objectively.

"I plugged the external into the Mac and moved a folder of images onto the desktop.  It looks like it went from read only to not locked.  Is this possible?"
Yes, that's exactly what happened. If you buy another drive, you could copy from your existing drive to the new and your files will be read/write. The new drive will have to be formatted as an HFS drive (that's the Mac's format). If you need to format it, you use Disk Utility which is in the Utilities folder on your Mac. Be careful with that -- it wipes out whatever is currently on the drive. Make sure you format the right drive.
I keep all my images on an external drive, too. In fact, I have two matching drives and sync them so I always have a backup.

  • Can I install Bootcamp on an External Hard Drive?

Can I install Bootcamp on an external Hard Drive? I don't see why it wouldn't work. Do I need to install the Mac OS on the external Hard Drive first, then Bootcamp?
    Parallels
Another question. Does Parallels allow you to not have to use the "option" key to boot into Windows? I mean if I use Parallels can I use XP or Vista at the same time as my mac applications?
What, (if any) are the drawbacks to using "Parallels"?
    *What Options are there...*
Is it possible for Apple to allow users to program a key on their keyboard, when pressed will bring up Windows so they don't have to always restart? I need to switch between Windows and mac OS quite often and it's a real pain to always restart. What options do I have?
    Thanks

By Microsofts Design no Windows can be installed and booted from external HDs. BootCamp just follows this.
However, according to this http://tubeshards.wordpress.com/2006/12/05/install-windows-to-a-macintosh-usb-dr ive/ it can be done.

Parallels is an OS X application which don't need a restart of your Mac to run Windows.
Therefor you can run OS X and Parallels Windows side-by-side.
Main drawback is, that Windows runs not native (on the real hardware) but in a virtualized environment.
While this is more than acceptable for 'standard' Office programs, any program that needs direct hardware access (especially games and 3D-programs) either do not run at all or run at noticeable slower speed.
Also you have to realize that the amount of RAM in your Mac is divided between OS X and Parallels Windows.

BootCamp is no option then, since it needs a reboot everytime you want to switch between OS X and Windows.
Parallels (and VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox, BTW) run alongside OSX.
    Thanks
    You're welcome. Hope it helps.

Windows will not install and boot from an external drive using Bootcamp Assistant. You could install Windows in a virtual machine using Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox.

  • I'm trying to install Firefox on an external hard drive.

''Duplicate post, continue here - [/questions/768694]''
I'm trying to install Firefox on an external hard drive. Having it start on the external drive in a program files directory is very straightforward but I would also like to have the user files on that drive as well. Those files are typically in a directory similar to the following.
    C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxxxxx\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox
I did have this set up on an older PC but now that I'm setting up a new one, I can't remember just how that was done. Could someone refresh my memory?

The process is quite straight forward, you start the profile manager, create a new profile and in the second step of the create profile wizard click on "Choose folder" to choose where you want to save the user data.
The process of creating a profile is detailed here - [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_Firefox_profile_on_Windows Creating a new Firefox profile on Windows - MozillaZine Knowledge Base]. There is a warning about using a non-standard location for the profile (copied from the mozillazine knowledge base)
'''If the folder you select for the new profile contains non-Mozilla files (such as the "My Documents" folder on Windows), your profile data will be intermingled with the non-Mozilla data. This can result in the loss of all of the data in that folder, including non-Mozilla files, if you later delete the profile.'''

  • Windows on an external hard drive

Does anone know how I can install and run Windows from an external hard drive? I use only a couple Windows applications and want to clutter my MacBook internal hard drive.

    Hi RKD56;
There is no supported way of doing that.
Since your needs for Windows sound very limited, I would suggest that you check out Crossover. It is capable of executing Windows application from OS X. They do have a demo version so that you can test your application with Crossover.

  • How to install Windows 7 on new hard drive?

I have changed the old hard drive (500 gb) with a new hard dirve (1 Tera), and now I have two problems: -
    1. How do I install Windows 7 on new hard drive?
    2. My laptop was pre-installed Windows 7 Pro, but all the DVD kit (Application & Drives Recivery Disc + Operating System Revocer), which was provided (by Lenovo) for the laptop is in the Windows 8 Pro. So how do I install Windows 7 Pro, in my laptop while all DVD kits are in Windows 8 Pro?
by the way this is my laptop spec (for reference) ; -
    * Note *
I plan to install Windows 7 Pro in my new hard drive using another Windows 7 DVD (Not DVD provided by Lenovo), but how do I get all the Leveno program which found within the 'Application & Drives Recivery' disc (such as ; - Lenovo System Health and Diagnostics, Lenovo Power Control,Lenovo's Fingerprint Reader) to install in that hard drive? (as I tell you before, all the DVD kit is in or only for Windows 8 Pro)
I hope somebody will help me answer my question,
    Thank You
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I got the solution;
Answer to question 1 ; using a backup & recovery software to clone my current OS, then transfer to my new hard drive.
Answer to question 2 ; download all the Drivers and software ( all the application that located on the DVD kit that I have) on Lenovo Official Website.
or other solution, send it to a computer service shop and let the experts ( the workers) install it for me ( the most simple and safe way).

How can I install ntfs on an external hard drive so that my Samsung Smart TV can see my media files? Or is there a better option?

OS X cannot natively write to a drive formatted as NTFS, nor can it format a drive as NTFS. There are third-party NTFS drivers available on the market.
Just out of curiosity: Even with NTFS, how is your TV going to access the external hard drive? Does the TV have a USB port?

  • If it is possible to install linux on a external hard drive?

If it is possible to install linux on a external hard drive, which can be boot from the my MacBook Pro? the reason I didn't try it is beacause that I don't know what it will do to my internal mac os x 10.5? Will it mess up my boot to my leopard?

it's possible, but difficult. i'm in the middle of trying to get this to work on my MacBook, but not there yet. The best resource i've found is here:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=510030
from what i've learned so far, in order to be able to boot linux on an external drive, the actual /boot partition must be on your internal drive. osx leaves a small (~130MB) partition unused, which can be used for this.
i think it would be easier to run on a partition of the internal drive, but now that i've started trying the external setup, i really want to make it work.

  • Problem installing windows on a secondary hard drive

    Hi,
Here's my issue (sorry for my english, I'm french):
-I have a macbook pro 15" with OSx Mavericks.
-I have a SDD harddrive PLUS a 500GO HDD connected to the optical slot.
I want to install windows on my secondary hard drive.
What I have done so far:
-I've cloned my older windows partition.
-I've created a bootcamp partition on my secondary HDD.
-I've restaured my clone to the new bootcamp partition on that secondary HDD.
Up to that point, everything seemed alright.
BUT when I try to boot on the windows partition, I get this message:
no bootable device insert boot disk and press any key
As if my MBP couldn't boot on a secondary hard drive.
I've looked for answers on this forum but didn"t find anything.
    thanks,
    m

The only difference between your setup and mine is that I have the SSD in the optical slot and the windows image is on my HD. I boot from the optical slot though, as all my regular Mac stuff is on the SSD. All I can think to do is use Bootcamp to delete the partition and try again. It sure seems like it should work.
