Install wizard freezing at "Updating environment strings"

Since September of last year, when ever I try to install Quicktime, regardless of the iTunes bundle or the standalone version, it would always go well until it says "Updating environment strings". And then it would just stop. I even got out all the malware that I thought was eating up my computer.
HP Pavilion 503n   Windows XP Pro   it totally *** whe it comes to gaming (64MB Intel Video,) 40GB HDD, 17" Flat Panel Monitor, 2 CD-RW,

so after months of reading forums and pulling my hair out..here's what I did to get to work: ( windows XP pro )
after a fresh reboot:
1. Open a windows explorer window.
2. right click on C:\ ( or your main windows drive )
3. ->properties->security
4. this will display all users and their permissions to this folder. click on add, enter your user name, and give yourself full access....this will take a while, it recursively sets the permissions of every file and folder on this drive for you to have full access ( I know, it sounds dangerous, and it probably is..but I got really f'ing frustrated..and had to go to extreme measures ).
5. right click on the QuickTimeInstaller.exe file->run as: click off of the check box that says "Protect My Computer From Unauthorized .....etc..." - click on OK..
6. I chose a folder other than the default ( I think ...\QuickTime3 )
and I just about soiled myself when it actually worked...I hope it does for you !!!
thanks

  • Infamous 'updating environment strings'; isn't this fixed yet??

Ok this is killing me. I know there are posts, and I have weeded through them for the last hour.
None of the solutions on here are working. Every install attempt of quicktime hangs up at the 'updating environment strings'.
I've used CC Registry Cleaner mentioned in one post. I've used Windows Install Clean up. I've uninstalled QT, deleted all folders including ones in System32, restarted, NADA. I've even read it's a firefox issue. Unistalled that, tried the QT install, NADA. Ugh. somebody bottle me please.
Another annoying thing is that I could not uninstall itunes without just deleting the folders, like it was 1992 all over again. It wasn't on the Add/Remove programs in CP, bizarre. Its still in my Start Up too...
So question 2, how should I go about uninstalling Itunes? Downloading the setup file and selecting Uninstall? Will that work?
More importantly I NEED the new Quicktime. It baffles me that this is MADE to be installed with itunes, itunes should be a stand alone. I'm about to buy an Ipod, but not if I can't install this!
    Windows XP by the way.
The file, QTPluginInstaller.exe is doing it I believe, right when the icon is being created. This file is taking up 99-100 percent of my CPU when it hangs up. Coincidence maybe?
HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP. I need a new MP3 player and this is literally making my clynical. Appreciate any help...GREATLY!

I did the following on a windows XP Pro machine and got it to install finally:

  • ITunes install wizard freezes up at same point everytime.

Trying to install the latest version of itunes and everytime I get the section of install wizard where it shows the picture of the girl and guy and it says iPod and iTunes Born to be Together, you click "next" and absolutely nothing happens and it just freezes up. I've tried like 5 times and same thing everytime. Have no idea what's going on -- anyone that can help??

    Hi buschden
Please look through the forums. You will see most often problems are caused by antivirus/antispy software conflicting with iTunes.
Ensure you always download the iTunes programme to your pc (save to desktop for example) not try to install online and disable AV/Spy software before you try to run the intall.
If you have done this, it may be your chosen AV software and/or firewall is not allowing iTunes to start up. Check the setting on your software in this regard.
I appreciate it is very frustrating when this happens, but be patient and search the forums. There are fixes for just about every problem!:)

  • Cannot install USB device, install wizard freezes when installing SiLib.sys

    Hello,
I have installed LabView and all the software required for running a program for tremor evaluation. When I plug a TremorScope via USB connection it starts Hardware Installation wizard, but the installation does not complete and system freezes when installing SiLib.sys. The OS is Windows XP.
Do you have any solution how to finish the installation or what is going wrong. Thank you for your help.

Why don't you ask the vendor of the device? It does not have anything to do with LabVIEW.

  • Installed 10.6.3 update and my computer scared me by freezing!

When I hit restart to install 10.6.3 updates, my computer screen froze. It went into a weird pattern onscreen and stuck there! I dug up my Mac book and it had me shut it down and pull the plug, then restart it. I did so, and the fans came roaring on. Then I repeated those steps and it seemed to come back on normally.
What do you think caused the scary freeze??
    Thanks!

The random color pattern on your screen is most likely caused by the graphic video memory cache that got gobbled up somehow.
Before you do any update of your system, the first thing you want to do is to make sure the system is intact first. The system (unix underneath your Mac) usually does the routine maintenance in the background in the middle of the night (3 or 4 AM) behind the scene, but if you put your Mac to sleep each night, it never gets to clean up the mess, and the potential problem could accumulate.
You can use Onyx http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20070 to manually do the maintenance and clean up before you do any update. You should verify your system disk status, repair the file permissions and clean up the caches with Onyx, and reboot before you update your system.
Be sure you backup your system before you do that, just in case if you did something wrong accidentally.
You should run Onyx once a month if you don't leave your Mac running at night to do its routine monthly, weekly, and daily maintenance automatically.
Also, anytime after you crashed your system, you have to run Disk Utility or Onyx to verify your disk (and repair your disk) to make sure that your file system is intact. This is disk repair rather than repairing the file permission. When you crash your system unexpectedly, there could be files that were left open at the time of the crash, and if those files were not fixed, it will haunt you by causing more crashes.

  • Can't install 10.5.4 update: Setup freezes at: "configuring installation"

Hi, I have just finished downloading the Mac OS X 10.5.4 update and when I try to install, it freezes at "Configuring Installation". I have tried to relaunch the installation a few times but in vain.
    What should I do?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mathieu.

I have done a hard reboot while it was "configuring installation" and didn't get any problems, now I don't know for "running installer script", but I don't think it will compromise your OS.
I have call a friend who is Apple Certified and he told me that a lot of people are experiencing this kind of problem and that it is usually OK when you re-download the update: http://supportdownload.apple.com/download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Mac_OSX/downloads/061-4758.20080626.vfgp9/MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.4.dmg
So, I am re-downloading and there is 53.26% left (about 2 hours left with my connection!!)! Will let you know ASAP.

  • Why does my Macbook freeze whilst trying to install iTunes 11.1 update?

I was trying to install the new iTunes update, 11.1 and after clicking "Install and Restart" the screen changes into the initial login background (the purple/pink stars wallpaper but without the login box) and freezes there. I can still see the cursor and move it around but I can't do anything else. I had to hold down the power button to shut the computer off and then turn it back on again. I've tried twice and the same thing happened both times. Any help would be appreciated.
I've a MacBook Pro version 10.6.8 if that's at all relevant.
    Thanks!

  • OS 10.4 install disk freezes on mounting

OS 10.4 install disk freezes. I had a problem with AppleWorks 6.2.9 not launching. It had been working in my 2-week old 20" iMac Intel Duo updated to 10.4.7. (Restarting solved that problem.) But I wanted to run disk repair from the install disk. After restarted from the disk (holding down C), it was mostly frozen, language selectons, etc. in first window. I was able to launch disk utilities from the menu bar. When I selected HD the selection only showed as a dim gray bar, not blue, and clicking repair was inoperative. This was pretty much the story for the other options: nothing worked including restart, start-up disk and cancel. I could launch the windows but not use or close them. I could not shut down with the power button. In the end the only way I could shut down was to pull the plug. The install disk looks fine. I tried the hardware test feature(restarting holding down D) and a small crude computer and chip display came up with a language choice menu, no menu bar at the top, all choices inoperable. I was able to shut down this time with the power button. I tried for disk repair again, restarting again holding down C, and this time there was not even a menu bar display at the top, just the language choice, inoperable. Power button inoperable. Pull plug to shut down. Permissions repair worked in disk utility in HD/Applications/Utilities.
There have been a number of quirks and problems in the two weeks I've had the computer. There were Mail and Calculator problems, fixed by deleting com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore. At times aliases on the launch bar will launch the Applications folder rather than the application itself. There was a momentary problem with Drag Thing (4.5.2) launching and showing for a time only in dim outline (otherwise works fine).
Imac Intel Duo 20   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2-weeks old

Actually the problem was not the mouse but how I was handling it. This was discovered after another lengthy work out with Apple Support. (TG for Support!)In the install and test modes the right sensor is not active once the disc is mounted. The left front of the mouse is active. The sides in the front are referred to as buttons. . . . An earlier article may be of interest, ID: 302516, October 07, 2005: "iMac G5 (iSight): Mighty Mouse right button doesn't work when installing Mac OS X." I would say this is solved then, except I have a niggling worry why I seem to be the only one experiencing the problem? Be that as it may, it is solved for my computer: when install is booted only the left "button" is active; the right will produce erratic or no result.

  • IPod freezes after updating to software version 1.2!!!

iPod freezes after updating to software version 1.2!!! After installing version 1.2 the "do not disconnect" screen took forever to disappear, so i just removed the cables and it still remained
like that, i restarted it manually, but now it's getting stuck when the apple logo appears...i reset it and when i finnally turns on, and i'm at the language tab, it freezes. can anyone help.!?

Apple just released firmware 1.2.1 for the ipod, you should try restoring your iPod again with that.

  • Trouble installing 10.5.6 update

I am having difficulty installing the OS X 10.5.6 update.
When I try to install this update using the software updater, it ends up freezing without completing the update. When I click install from the software updater, it asks me if I want to restart my computer. When I click restart the dock and menu bar disappear leaving only a progress bar for the upgrade. It gets stuck around 10% and wont budge. I have left the computer idle for up to 3 hours and it wont progress at all. Ultimately, I have to force restart the computer by holding down the power switch.
    Any ideas?

Hello Kevin and welcome to the discussions. Are upgrading from 10.5.2 to 10.5.6? Even so, I would not use the software updater to do it. Go to Apple's download page and download the Combo updater directly. There are too many things that can happen while downloading the update and one small hiccup from your ISP or the server can damage the update.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_6_ComboUpdate
Run the updater the repair permissions.

  • Telepresence Conductor Install Wizard Not Starting.

    Hello all,
So I am trying to get an instance of Telepresence Conductor running in my environment.  I have deployed the .ova for both 3.0.2 and 2.4.1 on different ESX Hosts but regardless of the version or host when the appliance boots up and I log in with the default user and password it goes straight to the # prompt.  I never get prompted with the install wizard.
Anyone have any suggestions?  Is there a command to start the wizard manually?

If you're getting a # sign and not a prompt for the configuration wizard, it sounds like you've logged in under the root account.  Can you provide a screenshot to verify?
You should be logging in with username "admin", and password "TANDBERG" if this is brand new deployment.

  • Firefox Install Wizard crashes

I click RUN to start Firefox install on my desktop PC. My "install new software" permissions dialog box appears. I give permission as administrator to run Firefox Install. Firefox install wizard window never appears--everything just stalls. I had no trouble installing Firefox 9 on my laptop.

Disabling Anti-virus did not work. It must have something to do with my administrative permissions in Windows Vista. Other updates have worked recently, but not installing Firefox.

  • Install wizard hangs upon installation

After downloading and unpacking the trial version of
Coldfusion the install wizard on a windows 2000 server platform
freezes and shows the background of the desktop. Is there a way
around this or is there something not functioning on the server or
possibly the wizard not executing correctly. Please advise.

Maybe consider redownloading the .exe. Or try running it on
another box. Is your w2k server running antivirus software? Might
want to stop that for a short time while the installer runs.

  • Problem installing service pack 3 update

I have windows XP up and running on a seperate drive in my Mac Pro. I am now trying to update Windows by installing service pack 3 update via the Windows Update option in the control panel.
I get an error everytime saying there is not enough disk space. My hard drive have 109GB of free space so I don't know what the problem is.
    Any ideas?

    jperkinski:
Here is a solution for you that should work:
Boot into Windows XP and get to the desktop.
    Click on the START Button
    Click on RUN
Type Regedit in the windows and click on OK
    *Navigate to*
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE
    \Software
    \Microsoft
    \Windows
    \CurrentVersion
    \Setup
In the right pane, Right-click and select New - String value
Name it as “BootDir” and set its value to “C:\”
Try installing SP3 now and it should work.
