Installation CD fails to mount XFS drive as /

I am trying to install arch on a old Vaio laptop. I can boot from the CD, then it fails, so I copied a few files and modules on to a small hd partion with damn small linux. So fare every thing seems to work ok... but
when I set the mount points the / on my xfs hda1 fails. I loaded the module with loaddisk fs2.img. I can do
> mkfs.xfs /dev/hda1
but I can't mount it.
me> mount /dev/hda1 /mnt
linux> mounting /dev/hda1 on /mnt failed: Invalid argument
me> mount /dev/hda1/ /mnt/
linux> mounting /dev/hda1/ on /mnt/ failed: Not a directory
What am I doing wrong?
(it works with reiser, ext2 and ext3)

Do you use 0.7.2 iso or 0.8?

    Hello Robert,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

How do i stop photoshop cs4 from quitting unexpectedly when saving a photoshop pdf? i attempted to download the adobe drive 5 but the installation keeps failing. I went through the process of clicking through the how to's and the troubleshooting and came to the conclusion that I need to install the adobe drive 5 but I can not complete the installation. I may be incorrect on this so I need immediate assistance as I have poster and ad deadlines. I also tried disabling the gatekeeper and solution 3 on the troubleshooting of slow saving on photoshop.
    Any help is much appreciated!
    Thank you!

Are you attempting to save the file to a network location instead of your local hard drive? If so, this is probably why you are encountering an issue and why Adobe Drive would be the solution. As we've documented, it is a bad idea to open from or save directly to a network source: Networks, removable media | Photoshop | CS4 and later. Drive can help you get around this by setting up an Adobe supported virtual connection to the network. Thus, if installing Adobe Drive is the solution you need and your need help with installing Drive, please post to the Downloading, Installing, Setting Up forum.
If you are not saving to a network location, then Adobe Drive is not going to be the answer. Then we'll need to know more about the file you are saving.

  • MacBook Pro Installation - Failed to Mount Real Root

Hi, I've been trying to install Arch on my older MBP for years now (2009 model, I think) with a single-boot configuration. I can successfully boot from the USB, where I get to select from three shells to boot in, being:
Arch Linux archiso x86_64 UEFI USB
    UEFI Shell x86_64 v1
    UEFI Shell x86_64 v2
Then, I select the first, and stuff just skims by at first, until I end up at something like:
    :: Device /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201303' mounted successfully
    :: Mounting /run/archiso/cowspace (tmpfs) filesystem, size=75%...
    :: running late hook [archiso_pxe_common]
    :: running cleanup hook [archiso_shutdown]
    :: running cleanup hook [udev]
ERROR: Failed to mount real root device
Bailing out, you are on your own. Good luck.
Then I'm stuck with a shell as root with barely any commands to use (no fdisk/gdisk/insert-any-partitioning-tool-here), etc. I'm pretty sure this isn't supposed to happen. Is there any guide on how I can fix this? Googling hasn't exactly worked, and I couldn't find anything on the Arch Wiki too easily.
    Thanks for the help!
    Important note:
Months ago, I got stupid and did try to install CrunchBang (BIOS boot only, obviously). That erased pretty much everything (that includes the EFI partition, etc.) and left me with a few unbootable partitions. So, uh, that is to say, if any suggestion involves booting up from OS X and doing anything, or using rEFInd/rEFIt, it won't work. Thankfully, however, I am able to do most Linux commands as I am currently on my primary system, Linux Mint.

@ the_isz - Thanks for the read, but no help.
@swanson - That usb hook was added, this error happens just after the usb module scans the bus. Listing by-label while in RAMFS shows the USB devices.
    Also while in initrd environment:

  • WD Passport 80Gb drive sometimes fails to mount

    Hi,
Running an iBook G4 with an 80Gb Western Digital passport USB-powered drive, occasionally I'll plug the drive in and it will fail to mount. The power light on the drive is on, but there is no activity. Most of the time, the drive will mount OK virtually as soon as it's plugged in, so it's not an issue with power.
The other USB port is used for an external mouse, occasionally a small hub.
Usually the only workaround for this is to leave the drive plugged in for a number of hours, after which it "magically" appears.
Surely there must be a simple answer to this one. I'm more than happy to go into the OS and sort this out if needed, so if anyone can shed any light on this I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    JF
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Have purchased four of those puppies. First 2 went back to Costco. My desktop PC (WinXP-SP2, 3 GHz Intel) couldn't see them. Bought another for son with ancient Dell. No problem. BTW, same situation w/ Shuffle; invisible to mine, OK w/ his. Bought 4th WD-80 for brand new iBook G4/12 last week. So far, so good.
Last wk assembled extra pocket drive using Fujitsu 40/4800/2.5" drive. Noticed nameplate rating at 550mA (if memory serves). USB is supposed to be maxed at 500 mA per port. The case came w/ USB hydra cable to draw power from 2 USB ports. Didn't work at all w/ my desktop PC, nor w/ only one USB port on iBook connected; but OK w/ cable connected to both USB ports for extra power. Am now using a separate wall-wart (5 vdc, 2200 mA) to power both drives.
My understanding is that the firewire port is good for about 1500 mA. Just bought a USB/Firewire case for the Fujitsu. Research still under way on this.

  • Internal hard drive fails to mount in Disk Utility.

My internal hard drive fails to mount in Disk Utility for the past year, so I cannot verify it. However, it does mount in Disk Warrior. (1) I am concerned that it will not mount within the Apple software, and what that bodes for my computer. (2) I also have MANY spinning beach balls daily and have to use the power button to reboot. I just bought extra Crucial RAM and have yet to install it. Somehow, I don't think it wil help my issue # 1 though. Please advise, anyone out there! Thank you.

No, there are never any errors like that. Also, I have upgraded the Mac OS from 10.5 to 10.6.8. That did nothing. I backed up my Users = Christina folders to a good, 15 year old Firewire 800 La Cie 1 TB  external hard drive. I also tested using the Apple Hardware test, which showed no problems, and Alsoft's Disk Warrior and defragged, and fixed a very minor issure re directory count, probably resulting from many improper shutdowns lately due to frozen spinning beach balls. None of these procedures alleviated the issues, and I still have the same issues: mainly that super-frequent spinning beach ball. Do you think I ought to install that new RAM sitting here finally? Perhaps it is a lack of RAM??I only have 2 lousy GB's of RAM after all! Thank you so very much for a reply.

  • Slave drive, CDs, USB drives, Disk Images and FW drives fail to mount

Hi. I have two Maxtor internal hard drives (6Y160P0 and 6Y120P0), the second of which (6Y120P0) all of a sudden will not mount on the desktop. When I reboot my Mac, I get two identical error windows that state, “The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer”, with options to initialize, ignore, or eject. (There are no other drives of any type connected to the computer).
Within Disk Utility (when run from the primary hard drive), the slave drive shows up, but its icon is dimmed. Clicking the “Mount” button does nothing. Disk First Aid does not allow one to “Repair Permissions” nor “Repair Disk”, presumably since it won’t mount (eg, these options are dimmed). One odd aspect about Disk Utility is that the master and slave drive are listed as “disk0s10” and “disk1s10”, respectively, rather than the way they usually show up with the names I’ve given them. Yet on the desktop the working master drive shows up with its given name.
When I run Disk Itility from a CD, both internal drives look fine, accept repairs, and the drives are listed by their proper names.
As another interesting clue, all of the Disk Images (stored on the working master internal hard drive) that I have attempted to mount fail to open as well. When I doubleclick them, I get an error that reads, “The following disk images failed to mount: Reason: No mountable file systems”.
Two different USB keychains fail to mount; my FW drive fails to mount.
I’ve run Applejack Auto Restart without any difficulty several times.
Apple's Hardware check CD says all is AOK.
I’ve rebuilt this problematic disk (and the master) several times with Disk Warrior 3.03 and all is supposedly AOK.
SmartReporter says both disks are fine.
TechTool Pro 4.1.2 has run the following checks on the problem disk and these are AOK: Disk Controller, SMART, Read/Write.
All of this makes me wonder if the issue is with my system software, rather than the slave disk??? Interestingly, CDs refuse to mount as well when I've booted from the primary hard drive (but I don't think it is the CD drive itself since I can boot from the CD drive). This, coupled with the fact that disk images won't mount, makes me now think it is an OS issue rather than hardware.
Any suggestions about what I can do to salvage and fix this problem would be greatly appreciated!
    G4/867MHz running OS 10.4.8

If anyone else is having this problem, check out the totally awesome post by GNJ to my similar query on the MacFixIt forums:
Drives and Disk Images refuse to mount
    http://www.macfixitforums.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=tiger&Number=791320&Forum= &Words=CharPatton&Match=Username&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=6months&Main=791320&S earch=true#Post791320
His suggestion to run the 10.4.8 combined PPC update worked like a charm and solved the problem perfectly!
PS If you are having the same issue, there is the problem that one can't use a USB/FW drive to get the combo updater onto the problematic hard drive, and even if you can, the faulty software won't allow one to mount a .dmg image. This can be solved by using "Target" mode, eg connect the problematic CPU to a working CPU (in this case, my PowerBook) via a FW cable, then boot up the problem CPU while holding down the letter "t". One can then drag the combined updater unstuffed file (eg, not the .dmg) directly to the problematic disk from the working CPU. Then, when I booted in the problematic disk/CPU, all it took was a doubleclick on the unstuffed updater and all was fine.

  • Firewaire Drives (Lacie) fail to mount

This is probably going to be a hardware problem, but let's see. I have 3 x 500Gb Lacie firewire drives, they connect using FW 800 cables, I connect them and they power up, but fail to mount. I have tried them individually and the same goes for all 3, they power up, but never mount. I then try them on my Powerbook, and they mount fine. Hardware issue on my G5 perhaps?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 15 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

  • Drives Fail to Mount

After upgrade, my other hard drives are failing to mount, although they are present and Disk Utility sees them fine. Permissions are fine. Cannot even boot from a CD (anything on the IDE Bus).
This happens on two PowerMac G4's (one was cloned from the other) so, I know it is not the hardware.

I realise this might be related to my problem?

  • [SOLVED]Mounting usb drives "not authorized" with thunar-volman (XFCE)

    Hi,
I'm new to Arch (even though I must be approximately at my 15th try at installing it properly) and I have a problem with thunar-volman.
Whenever I log in as user, and try to mount a usb drive with thunar, let's say I want to plug a drive labeled Ext3_8Go, I get the same message in a pop-up window : "Failed to mount Ext3_8Go (or anything close, not in English in the text), not authorized (that part is in English)"
    My install is :
    - net install
    - partitions : 9Go for /, no swap, no separate /home
    - packages : base and base-devel. The only modifications in the package list is that I remove ppp, pcmciautils, and xfsprogs.
    - config : at the install stage I only modify rc.conf to change LOCALE and HOSTNAME, and pacman's mirrorlist to allow all French mirrors in addition to the one at the top.
When the usb installation is over, I run this script :
"installation_xfce.sh"  (there may be some errors left, I modify this script as I learn) :
    #!/bin/bash
    # expected environment : freshly installed archlinux, login : root.

    Thanks a lot !
    That worked !
I stumbled across this part of the wiki several times before, but didn't really understand so I had not tried.
If anyone's interested in the script, here's the corrected version :

  • "Windows 8.1 installation has failed"

Downloaded the Enterprise iso of 8.1 from the Volume Licensing site.  Currently running Windows 8 64 bit Enterprise.  Downloaded 8.1 64 bit
enterprise.  Mounted iso, ran setup, after licensing agreement and choosing data migration options received the error "Windows 8.1 installation has failed" .  Googled around, and didn't see this exact problem.  There is no error code,
nothing in the logs, nothing at all.  Just the message "Windows 8.1 installation has failed".  Tried several downloads of the iso, on multiple Windows 8 boxes.
Could a group policy setting, or something else related to these machines being on a domain be causing our issues?  If not, the lack of error codes is making the issue next to impossible to debug.
Anyone out there able to help?
    Thanks
p.s.  already verified that update kb2871389 was installed.

    Hi,
Which log did you checked, could you find the setup.etl file in %WINDIR%\Panther?
It should have $windows.~bt\Sources\Panther log file. please check it.
You can refer to the link below for more details about Windows 8 installation log.
Windows Setup Log Files and Event Logs:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824819.aspx
If problem persists, I would like to suggest you to make a clean install on other drive for test, to make sure this problem was not caused by hardware problem.
Note: before Windows installation, please backup all files on the drive which Windows 8.1 would be installed. Also make sure the hardware driver such as BIOS, Motherboard was upgrade to be latest.

  • Mounting Cdrom Drive In Guest Domain running 1.0.3

We can see the exported cdrom volume in /dev/dsk as a new device and also at the ok prompt after running devalias.
However, we need to mount this device so that we can install software in our domain. All our attempts at mounting just hang and I end up having to stop/start the whole domain. ?
Is there an easy way to mount cdroms/dvd drives in a guest domain ?
    TIA

There is an recently filed bug where DVDs (and ISO images) which do not have a VTOC in their disk label
fail to be mountable in the guest domain (e.g. application software DVDs as opposed to OS installation images).
6708257 DVD-ROM (not OS installation disk) can not mount from guest domain of LDOM 1.0.2
    # mount -F hsfs /dev/dsk/c0d1s0 /mnt
    mount: I/O error
    mount: cannot mount /dev/dsk/c0d1s0
It's strange that you are getting a hang though (the reported error is an I/O error).
Are there any messages in /var/adm/message of the control domain?
What OS/patches are running on the guest and control domains (i.e is 127127-11 installed on both) ?
I've just had a thought though, exporting the DVD device as a slice instead may work
(it works for me on an ISO image but my machine is 1000s of miles away so I can't stick DVD in it
    to try out)
    e.g. ldm add-vdsdev options=slice /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s2 cdrom@primary-vds0

  • Software Updates "can't be installed" & "failed to mount" messages

In software update; all new software, Quicktime, iTunes, Java for Mac and Security Update; I get a message saying that they can't be installed, followed by :"The digital signature for this package is incorrect. The package may have been tampered with or corrupted since being signed by “Apple”."
I also cannot download software updates (ie: Firefox or adobe flash player). I've already repaired permissions and verified disks. I've also gone to the main websites to download from and when I try to run them, I get "disk images failed to mount.." and the reason being "codec overrun" every time.
    Some one please help!

Hi jrsysurfer, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I see you've done some of this already, but since it seems something is corrupted with your OS, am including it all, but I think it may take an A&I.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...

Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • CDs and dmg files failing to mount on an eMac; any suggestions?

    Dear all,
I have not posted here before and hope someone can assist please; I'm a long-time Apple user, having started with the Apple II and currently owning an iMac G5 and PowerBook G4.
Having obtained a G4 eMac, I discovered a serious software/hardware for which I can't find a solution. It is running OS X.2.8 which has an issue mounting .dmg and CDs. When I attempt to mount .dmg files, it reports the error message:
"FILE NAME failed to mount due to error 95. (no mountable file systems)"
All CDs will not appear on the desktop with the exception of the Apple Hardware Test CD. They do appear through Disk Utility but can't be mounted. I have tried apps such as "Mount" without success.
    Apple has recognised this problem:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106345
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107288
but none of the suggested remedies have worked for me. Various forums suggest solutions, a summary of which may be found here:
    http://www.macattorney.com/tutorial.html#anchor-diskimage
    but none worked.
I have also tried holding the "c" key with the Install CD but it won't mount.
Any suggestions please? I can boot with System 9 - as a last resort would it be possible to then delete key files from the OS X's "System" folder, following which I might be able to boot from the "Install" CD?
    Many thanks,
    Peter

They sometimes say you're better helping yourself!
I seem to have solved this after many hours of experimentation. I decided to hook up my iMac G5 (running 10.4.11) via a firewire cable. Having started the iMac, I followed the instructions for a target disk, connected the cable and fired up the eMac (hold "T" etc). Within minutes the eMac with its inserted CD could be seen on my iMac's desktop. However, I now needed to see if it worked the other way around - if I could somehow boot up with the eMac and use the iMac as the target disk, putting the CD into the iMac.
The eMac read the iMac's drive but unfortunately I could not see the inserted CD. Having then turned off the iMac, I left the firewire cable plugged in and then inserted the eMac's Install disk - to my great surprise the Install disk suddenly appeared on the eMac's desktop for the first time! I clicked the Installer which then announced it would start up from the CD. It duly did - and I managed to revert back to System 10.2, rather than the problematic Apple upgrade 10.2.8 which had been installed (and apparently caused the problems).
I'm trying to obtain a copy of 10.3 Panther, simply to run the excellent Elgato EyeTV.
    Fingers crossed!
    PJD.
