Installation Error 1406

Error 1406.Could not write value to key \Software\Classes\AcroIEHelper.AcroIEHlprObj.
It won't let me change permissions on this key using regedit.

Pat, there was an update a couple of weeks ago that when I updated, it gave an error and wouldn't update. Reader still functioned, but kept giving me the update reminder.
I then uninstalled Reader and attempts to clean install still gives me this error:
Error 1406.Could not write value to key \Software\Classes\AcroIEHelper.AcroIEHlprObj. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
Your acrobatcleaner utility started to work, then went to "not responding." There is no AdbeArCleaner.log in my computer search, but then I can't "see" any AppData folder either, so it may be hidden.
I followed the directions to give permissions to that key in the registry, but it won't check or it checks in the box, but then won't stay checked when I reopen it. Is there another registry key that I need to adjust permissions?
Should I uninstall the Adobe PDF ifilter 9 for 64-bit platforms and try again?
Thank you

    Any Ideas?

There are several NI KnowledgeBase articles that potentially provide answers to the installation problems you are seeing.
The first (2CRF5B1R) relates to the Windows Registry being at its maximum size and therefore not being able to write the additional keys as required by the installer. From experience this is rare, but the article is worth reading and considering.
The second (2OK8222G) states that this error may occur if you use a non-numeric character in the product version entry in the Application Builder dialog. The article provides more of an explanation - so its not worth repeating here.

  • Error 1406 preventing Reader installation.

I recently had to uninstall Adobe Reader XI on meey ts on hoswWin 7 laptop. When I tried to reintall it on several occasions in the past week, I keep getting th same error message just as the install was about to complete..."Error 1406. I've never encountered this issue before.  Any thoughts on how to resolve it?  Thanks.
    Cheers,

I don't know why you are getting this; it's definitely not a valid registry key.
Try running the uninstaller from http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html then download and run the offline installer from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

  • Photoshop cs4 install fails on Vista with registry access error 1406

I've been trying to install Adobe Photoshop CS4 on my Vista for a couple of days now.  It grinds for a minute or two then tells me "Installation of the following components has failed:  Adobe Drive CS4, Adobe Photoshop CS4"  when I cancel the install and click the "More Information" button, I see this:
    Adobe CSI CS4
    Error:
Error 1603. Error 1406.Could not write value AdobeCS4ServiceManager to key \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.   Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
When I go into regedit, I have no problem creating a string value in the indicated key.
Here are some of the things I've tried:
    1) run setup as administrator (even tho I have UAC turned off)
    2) run setup in WinXP SP2 compatibility mode
    3) use the Adobe Support Advisor to track down the error in their knowledge base and followed steps to apply permissions to descendents of the indicated tree
Done lots of googling plus searching of the experts-eschange knowledge base.

Choose Custom during install, deselect Version Cue, Adobe Drive and Acrobat.com. The CSI Service is related to that.

  • Install problems with CRXI R2 -   Error 1406

I am stuck on trying to upgrade from CR XI R1 to CR XI R2.
My company has a VB6 application -- very large and will take great effort to port to .net.  I have customers who are now on Windows 7 and complaining some of the reports are very slow.  They run fine on Windows XP.  Because of this, on the advice of SAP and this forum, I am trying to upgrade my development machine and then my customers' systems with CR XI R2, as described in the forum posts on this topic.
On my development system, I installed:
    CRXI R2: http://downloads.businessobjects.com/akdlm/crystalreports/crxir2_sp4_full_bld_0-20008684.exe
    and then:
    Service Pack 6: http://downloads.businessobjects.com/akdlm/crystalreports/CRYSTALREPORTS06_0-20008684.EXE
I ran into the missing CrystalReports.msi problem and followed the advice on this thread: Crystal XI Release 2 attempts to install every time I open our application
After following those instructions and rebooting, I started the install.  I got this error during the install:
Error 1406. Could not write value MyCube to key Products8790BF49490D7C04197D38D49322D0A4Features.  Verify that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnel..
After ignoring the error, I got the same error for several other features during the install.
I subsequently uninstalled all my old versions of Crystal (8.5 and 9.0 as well as the XI version and service pack 6).  I then only installed the XI R2 version and things went great.  But the install of service pack 6 failed again with the 1406 errors.
I am really stuck!  I now have no ability to fix any of my reports on this machine and can't run my reports through the VB6 app.
    Can anyone help me out?
I really appreciate any help you can give me.
    Meryl

    Hello Meryl
Searching the registry for the 8790BF49490D7C04197D38D49322D0A4 guid, gets you to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Features\8790BF49490D7C04197D38D49322D0A4
This is not a Crystal Reports Key. Rather it is a key used by the MS installer, thus the query is most likely best directed to Microsoft. Other than that, see the following re error 1406:

  • Error 1406 when trying to download the Trial Version of Visio

I am trying to install the trial version of Visio 2013 on Windows 7.  I keep receiving an Error 1406 - Setup cannot write to the registry key.  I have tried to follow a tutorial on how to fix it but it  didn't help.  How can I correct
    this?
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
The error 1406 means that your account has no permission to modify the registry key on your machine.
I suspect that you have found this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838687.
    You may do this:
    1. Verify you have local administrator permission for your machine.
    2. Disable all of your local security programs, like AVG/firewall and then install Office in Windows Clean boot.
    3. Press Win+R> Type regedit > find the following
registry key> Assign the full control premission
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData

  • Unable to write to registry key for Acrobat XI - error 1406

    Hi all,
I have a problem regarding the installation of Adobe Acrobat XI 11.0.07 on an ASUS laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium OS.
In short, I am unable to complete the installation of Adobe Acrobat XI on this machine because Acrobat is not able to write the value to the registry key situated here:
         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SOFTWARE --> Microsoft --> Internet Explorer --> Toolbar.
I tried to find solutions on the internet, and have found one webpage at the Adobe Forums, which is this one: Error 1406.Could not write value Adobe ARM - and it was not very helpful, since the person asking solved his problem, but did not tell how he did. So, I found this page at Acrobat Help, called Error 1402 | Error 1406 | Acrobat, Reader where I tried the different solutions, but so far none of these have worked. What I did was to remove all previous versions of Adobe Acrobat, Reader, Air and so on. In fact, I deleted all software from Adobe in case one of these softwares were to blame, but it has not worked. But before I deleted all this software, I deleted Acrobat and Reader several times, but as you probably already have found out, it did not work. As this did not work, I tried the next solution at Acrobat Help, which was to "Set permissions to their defaults in the registry". I followed the solution completely and did everything it said, but it has not worked. As a note, I have to say that the registry key type I have problems with is called "Locked", the type is REG_DWORD and the data value is (0). Does this have anything to do with it? I am not too familiar with editing the registry. Though, I did try to change the value to (1) and updating the registry, but it did not work...
More information: nevertheless if I install the complete version of Adobe Acrobat XI or the typical installation, the same error comes up: error 1406. And I did scan my system with my antivirus software, called Bullguard, to see if there were any viruses; there were none. I also closed my antivirus software and diabled the firewall of Bullguard, but that was not succesful either, and I did a scan of my system using cmd as an administrator (sfc /scannow), and the program found some errors it could not fix. As far as I can see, it found three .dll files with errors. I have the document called sfcdetails.txt if that would be any helpful to you.
Besides that, I am not sure what to do. I did pay for Adobe Acrobat the 23rd of January, 2015, and I have not managed to make it work properly yet, and I cannot update the software, since I have this problem with the registry. I am able to use the software for what I had to use it for until now, but I would like to be able to use it for everything it stands for and update it to prevent any lapse in security.
Thank you. I hope you have any ideas for my problem and will be able to help me!
    Best regards,
    Mads

    Hi Rahul,
Thank you for your answer. Though, it did not solve my problem! I did what you said: I tried using the Adobe Acrobat cleaner tool, and afterwards, I restarted my computer. After this, I downloaded the program from your link and I tried to install the program, but I did not succeed, because the same error came up, which is this:
Error 1406. Could not write value {47833539-D0C5-4125-9FA8-0819E2EAAC93} to key \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar.
With this error, the only options are to abort, retry or ignore the install, but none of these solves the issue, I am afraid.
But what I think it is all about is how to gain access to the registry. I followed the tutorial, I mentioned above, but I were not able to solve it... I gained administrator access to the registry, I made the current administrator account the owner of the key (the current administrator is not the original administrator of the computer, since I changed this long time ago), and I made the permissions correctly, I guess. I followed the tutorial, anyhow. Though, what confuses me, is that when pressing the button, called "Advanced", and entering the menu called "Advanced security settings for Toolbar" (I have the Danish version of Windows, excuse me if I did not translate it correctly), I see many persmission posts, two of which have the name of the current administrator account. One of these have full control, the persmissions from this are not inherited and they are used on "this key and underkeys". The second only has a special permission, it is inherited from "MACHINE\SOFTWARE\..." and it is used only on this key. How to change this, I am not sure. But I do not suspect that there should be two permissions for the same administrator account? Do you know if this is right?
    Thank you.
    Best regards,
    Mads

    Hi,
I get and error 1406 when trying the install Ni-DAQ 6.8.1 on a Winfows 95
machine. Registry key access is not being allowed when the installation
tries to update the registry keys
Any ideas what causes this. I can find no reference to this error code
    Thanks
    Neville.

    Neville;
There is a limit to the number of entries in the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs key, at least on Win95. By removing some other entries, the problem will probably be solved.
    Hope this helps.

  • Error 1406... any help?

Have been trying to load up the start-up disk, mid-setup (without my iPod plugged in) I get an error 1406 "could not write value street2 to key /softwear/Apple Computer, Inc./iPod/UserReg2."
    Did all the troubleshooting suggestions;
    admin access - got it
updated to XP SP2 (includes installer 3.0)
    emptied temp directory
uninstalled old versions of quicktime and itunes
except editing my registry files. Don't want to get into that unless it is necessary.
Any suggestions? I would like to use my B-day present sometime this year.

So i am answering my own problem,in the hopes that it will help someone else.
I got help from a very patient cousin who loaded everything up on her Dell. When the error messg popped up AGAIN, there were the choices to cancel or ignore... so we tried the ignore, and it worked. I tried it on mine and it worked too.
Now if i can only get the thing to actually play the music that was sucessfully downloaded, i would be a happy and relieved girl.

    Kind Regards,

    Hi Phil,
Thank you for your questions. Have you uninstalled Office 2007 from the machine before the Office 2013 installation?
I believe you've already seen this KB article before, the steps above are quoted from it:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838687
As can been seen from the article, the steps above are specific to Method 4. There are three other Methods mentioned in the article, have you ever tried them? If not yet, I would suggest you to have a try:
Method 1: Set the permission for the Everyone group of the registry subkeys that are listed in the error message to Full Control.
Method 2: Disable the third-party application.
Method 3: Try the installation again in
Let me know if the issue persists after the steps above, we'll take a further look then.
