keep getting "general installation error" message Mac OSX 10.8.5/Safari 6.0.5 Followed all the instructions for uninstalling and clean installing. Just wont install

Make sure you have it set to "show hidden files"
Check BOTH places and you have to restart Finder
Press "Quit This" and then go to the Finder Dock icon and right click it
    Select "Open"
    Open TIme Machine
Go back to September 28 or earlier.
You'll see the mach_kernel file in the Mac HD directory
(I can't show it in the TM because screenshots don't work while it's open but here it is in my MAc HD)
Right click it and select "Restore to"
Then, when it goes back to Finder, choose the Mac HD directory and click OK.
It will place the mach_kernel back where it was and you can install software again
DON'T FORGET to go back and hide your files (and restart Finder) again, or you'll have a mess with the clutter of hidden files everywhere.

  • Installer "error encountered while writing receipt"

I'm running off 10.4.10, and have been trying to install updates for months now, unsuccessfully. When I try to install off of the automatic updating system, it simply tells me the installation has failed and to try again later. When I download updates seperately and check the log, I find that there was an "error encountered while writing receipt". There is no respective receipt in the Receipts folder. I've tried installing right after a reboot, repairing disk permissions, and searching through support help for hours.
Also, I'm not sure if this is related or not, but iTunes has gone blank after starting up a few times over the past several months, telling me that the Library is damaged.
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    AMC

HI AMC20 and welcome to Apple Discussions ...
Let's take this one issue at a time.
Locate this file: com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist It's here: /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the preferences folder to the trash, empty the trash and reboot. Go to the Apple logo top left in your Desktop and then click Software Update. If Software Update fails... we need to go further.
See how much available drive space there is. Select your MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then Command + I, which will prompt the Get Info window. Click the General tab so the arrow faces down. Look where it says; Available and Capacity Try not to allow your available drive space to fall below 15% of the capacity. Software Update cannot download and update software without enough space.
As for iTunes... go here to learn how to recreate your iTunes Library:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451 < recreate iTunes Library
If you continue to have problems, you might want to do an Archive & Install or Erase & Install:
    Reinstalling Mac OS X
Under some circumstances, you may need to reinstall Mac OS X. You can reinstall Mac OS X while keeping your files and user settings intact.
Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the panel where you select the destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will be the only one available).
Click Options. If you want to save your existing files, users, and network settings, select "Archive and Install," then select "Preserve Users and Network Settings." If you want to erase everything on your computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select "Erase and Install." You can't recover erased data.
    Click Continue.
Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you'd like to install, or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).
If you purchased a standalone version of Mac OS X, these installation instructions are in a booklet included with Mac OS X.
If you need to reinstall the version of Mac OS X that was on your computer when you purchased it, or if you need to restore all the software on your computer, including Apple, bundled third-party applications, and printer drivers, instructions are in the manual that came with your computer.

  • Acrobat XL installation error encountered

I downloaded the Acrobat Pro install file, but when it tries to install, I get a popup box with a yellow caution icon and the heading of "Error Encountered."  The message states, "Acrobat installer encountered an unexpected failure.  Please try again.  If it continues to fail, contact Adobe Support."  This is me contacting Adobe Support.  Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Try downloading the installer again perhaps with a different web browser.

  • Adobe reader installation error on Mac

I can download Adobe reader but when I run the installer, it is not installed.
I get this message:  "Installer package Adobe Reader XI (11.0.06) installer failed (The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail.  Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.)"
I have down loaded from several sites with different browsers and always end up with the same result.  I just updated to Mavericks and my old Reader will not work.  I can't discover how to contact the "software manufacturer" which I guess would be Adobe.  What do I do now?

  • CS2 installation error (on Mac OSX, 10.8.2)

I recently learned that Adobe is offering CS downloads for free, download here:
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads/cs2_downloads/index.html
    I'm running on a new MacbookPro, OS X 10.8.2.
I was able to download all three products fine. The installation starts but eventually I get an error in a popup window that says: "The installation failed. The installed encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
The Adobe live chat guy said they don't help with products that old.
Does anybody have any recommendations on how to resolve this?
    Thanks.

    Not the case, unfortunately.
Adobe has shut down the CS2 activation server.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2013/01/update-on-cs2-and-acrobat-7-activation-server s.html
They're offering copies of CS2 which don't require activation to customers who purchased genuine CS2 serial numbers years ago.

You purchased the DVD/Box of the product or downloaded it from Adobe.com? PSE11 is released now. Would be good to try trial http://www.adobe.com/products/elements-family.html?promoid=KACNC and check if it works.
Also try installing with Admin account. At times anti-virus also create conflict so you might try with that off and see.
Cleaning the old files using clean script tool http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html and then try installing again.
    Hope it helps.

  • Help Please. Bootcamp installation error. Mac newbie

    Hello.
I just bought a brand new 24" iMac about two weeks ago. Downloaded BootCamp beta today, updated all software and firmware. Installed bootcamp, installed Windows Media Center 2005 SP2. Before that I created a new 32gb partition to keep the FAT system the same. This is my first Mac, I love OS X, unfortunately I need to run ESRI GIS software which is only PC compatible. Anyway, Windows installs, I try ejecting the CD, and it would not ehect. I restarted the computer to go back to OS X, but the disc never ejected, and it reads off the installation disc. I can not boot OS X now. How can I get the disc out, without OS X? And/Or what should I do to safe the least amount of hassle. I installed this POS OS on its own partition. I am very windows and computer literate, but this one just seems to scratch my head. My nervous than anything, spent over $2700 said and done, and I don't feel like problems within two weeks already. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You

Awesome links. Also helped me. I sold my powerbook g4 before because of terrible it was to run virtual pc ... now debating if I should do bootcamp or parallels option ... probably going with parallels ...
Smart idea: My advice is to install BootCamp (with fat partition/Vol) but use Parallels with that as its Win Drive.
*Virtual pc is an Emulator which is utterly different technology and with heavy overheads.*
Don't believe most of the negative stuff you'll read here about parallels - it's almost all wrong/caused by misunderstanding.
Pre-leopard (which i don't use) BootCamp is BETA. Don't trust it.
Use parallels and have it use the Windows Partition.
It's not emulation - in most case it's stable, megafast flexible and reliable.
It is 'Virtualisation - a technology around in Mainframes for years and the Virtual Machine approach is the way of the future (on most platforms):
one example : people have argued for VM Fusion (or BootCamp) over Parallells because 'Parallels only uses one processor and VM will use 2 - or 4.. and 'BootCamp is 'Native'....
    Wrong.
VM will use 2 - but in doing so usually slows the Mac down unnecessarily - with Parallels, The VM gets one or more processor/cores... the OS X Stream usually gets its own one or more processors/cores...
    Parallels IS 'Native'Intel.
*BootCamp (pre-Leopard) is BETA*. (=no support... and you'll get little when it isn't because BETA almost all your problems will be with "third party products" like Windoze or Windoze Apps doing truly stoopid things.. I doubt you can get much M$ support for running windoze under BootCamp or any of the VM solutions... not that you get much M$ support anyway
*Apple are never really going to support Windoze - why shd they: NOT their product... Vice versa.*
Parallels is usually faster than fusion VM and often faster than booting into windoze.
(Exceptions : fancy 3d grafix cards - just a driver issue - which is still an issue with the others anyway and is being upgraded all the time)
Otherwise, It's often even faster than equivalent 'Native Windoze' Boxen (no I don't really know why either ... .
Parallels and other VM products allow you to run multiple VMs: 95, 98,XP,Vista,Linux... at supa high speed and all in their own windows while OS X continues 'doing its stuff'!!
Amazing stuff: If you have any brains these days, you really only need to buy ONE PC: a good Intel Mac, and run the best set up & optimised VM product you can find, and whatever OSs you fancy!
For my money - ATM, that's a Mac with windoze partitions on drives and a top quality VM product like Parallels...
(A lot of 'non technical' ppl simply don't 'get' this stuff... wikipedia can help, google reviews, benchmarks etc.. - e.g. grab a fast Flash drive.. format as HFS+ and use from OS X => as fast as possible. Format as Windoze, use on/from Mac and it may be 10 times as slow, V/V and so on....)
With OS X, Parallels, correctly-formatted Win Drives, correctly setup and optimised you really have the best of all possible worlds. BUT: stay in the Mac world. DON'T use rubbishy windoze programs that were NOT designed to work in a Virtualised environment (MacDrive etc etc) or you will get probs (use TCP/IP Networking or Shared folders etc instead - not that you really need much of anything like MacDrive, anyway the Mac & VM can read and write all that...)
My ('post College') Kids all switched to Macs set up this way.
They only ever use BottCamp for some games.
They do have Parallels but rarely need to use any Windoze stuff anyway.. - oh and 'They are SO Cool" and "we love them.."
They'll never go back (sell yr M$oft shares short
    Best of luck.

  • CC installation error (13) mac os

    Hi,
I can´t install CC. Error starting CC, cookies dir: cannot make folder / cookies: permission denied (error 13) ??
    Any hints?
    Regards,
    Marjosat

Which Operating system do you have?
It looks like the permission issue because of which cookies are not getting downloaded.
For Mac: Open Terminal and run the below commands to correct the permission.
    chmod -N ~/library
chmod +a "everyone deny delete" ~/library
This shall correct the permission and then you should be able to install CC desktop.
    For Windows:
Please try to clear the cookies and history for the internet browser and relaunch it.
Or you can try with different browser.
Other solution/workaround is creating the new user account.
    Thanks!

    Hi hongkongpom,
Just wanted to say that after posting the problem, I had a chat with an iTunes' Tech Support, her name is Rebekah.  My problem was resolved after that.  Will list the chat history below in hopes that it may help you as well.
    Good luck!
    Samia
    Chat Transcript
    Friday, October 4, 2013 05:55 AM
    Duration: 81 minutes 28 seconds
    Rebekah:
Welcome to AppleCare chat support. Please give me a moment to look over your information.
    Rebekah:
Hi, Samia! My name is Rebekah. If we get disconnected, please chat us back. http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/contactEnter the case number from the initial email we sent you. This gives the next advisor you chat with immediate access to your case history.
    Rebekah:
Could you please confirm your serial number? I want to be sure we provide the best service possible for you, Samia!
    SAMIA:
    Sure, it's 8L8395UY2C5
    SAMIA:
    My problem is with iTunes.
    Rebekah:
Thanks for that confirmation. Just a heads up, this is iOS Tech Support. We do support iPod touches, iPads, and iPhones, but not the iPod classic. But no worries! I can get you in touch with a phone Advisor who can get you in touch with the department that specializes in iPod classics and would be able to better assist you. Would that be OK?
    SAMIA:
I wasn't able to install the new version of iTunes (version 11.1.1). The installation keeps failing. The they suggested the I install it manually and that failed too. I will attach the message I received.
    SAMIA:
    I don't have a problem with iPod.
    SAMIA:
    Just iTunes
    Rebekah:
No problem! We can certainly troubleshoot iTunes as much as possible. It may come to the point that you may have to transferred, but we can do as much as possible during this chat!
    Rebekah:
Thanks for the screenshot. It is a bit small so I am unable to fully see the message that you are receiving. What is the error message you are receiving?
    SAMIA:
This is the message I received in case you weren't able to open the attachment: "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2324."
    Rebekah:
    Thanks for that info!
    SAMIA:
    Pleasure!
    Rebekah:
What version of Windows (XP, Vista, 7) do you have?
    SAMIA:
    Windows 7
    SAMIA:
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    Rebekah:
Thanks for that confirmation. I do apologize for the delay, Samia. I am researching this error code now. You mentioned trying to install iTunes manually. To be sure I am on the same page, what steps did you take to do that?
    SAMIA:
Well when the indsatalltion failed I was given instructions to select Download Only from Tools and then install manually. When I did it, I window popped up with the following items: - AppleApplicationSupport
    SAMIA:
    - AppleMobileDeviceSupport64
    SAMIA:
    - Bonjour64
    SAMIA:
    iTunes64
    SAMIA:
    SetupAdmin
    SAMIA:
I selected Repair in all of them instead of Remove and all worked but iTunes64
    SAMIA:
That's when I received the message that I sent you earlier.
    SAMIA:
By the way, this is the fir st time something like this occured. I never had problems with installation before.
    Rebekah:
I completely understand what you're saying. Since that Repair did not resolve the issue, our best option is to uninstall iTunes and its components and redownload it. To do this, we will follow the steps in this article: Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
    Rebekah:
First, we will want to quit iTunes and/or Apple Software Update if those are open at this time.
    SAMIA:
Rebekah, the instructions you gave says, "For Windows XP, follow these steps to remove and reinstall iTunes and other software components for Windows XP."
    SAMIA:
    I closed all applications
    SAMIA:
Also, my iTunes doesn't open anymore after the new failed installation.
    Rebekah:
The section that says "For Windows XP…" is in case we opened up the wrong article, as we have the one for Windows Vista, 7, or 8. There is a link to click ("these steps") in those directions that would take us to the article for uninstalling on a Windows XP.
    Rebekah:
So no worries! We have the right article!
    Rebekah:
On the computer, we will want to click on Start > Control Panel. In Control Panel, we will click the "Uninstall a program" link.
    SAMIA:
I thought so after doing a little exploration.
    SAMIA:
    done
    Rebekah:
Alright, we'll want to select iTunes from the list of currently installed programs. Then we will click Uninstall. When asked if you would like to remove iTunes, let's click Yes.
    Rebekah:
After the uninstallation is complete, we don't want to restart your computer if you're prompted.
    SAMIA:
    Done
    Rebekah:
Then if you see other iTunes entries on the list, we'll want to remove them the same way.
    Rebekah:
Then we will remove all instances of Apple Software Update the same way you removed iTunes.
    SAMIA:
Okay, but do I have to remoce iCloud as well?
    SAMIA:
Rebekah, I received the same error message again when uninstalling
    Rebekah:
We actually do not need to remove iCloud. After the Apple Software Update, we will want to remove all instances of Apple Mobile Device Support
    Rebekah:
How strange! Are you able to click past that and allow the process to continue or has it stopped it completely?
    SAMIA:
I am unable to uninstall iTunes either
    SAMIA:
    Stopped completely
    SAMIA:
    I treied clicking Repair
    Rebekah:
Alright, after trying the Repair option, let's see if it will allow us to continue uninstalling or not.
    SAMIA:
I tried that but unfortunately, it isn't working. I still get that same message with error code 2324.
    Rebekah:
This error code is not something that I am finding in my sources, Samia. So there is a chance that it is being caused with the Windows computer itself. However, I did find a link that may be able to help with uninstalling iTunes from Windows' support site: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
    SAMIA:
Rebekah, you're a genius! It worked! iTunes is no longer there. What next?
    Rebekah:
    Awesome! I'm glad that worked!
    Rebekah:
To be sure I am on the same page, what was the last component we uninstalled?
    SAMIA:
    iTunes
    SAMIA:
Shall I remove the Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, and Apple Software Update
    Rebekah:
That is correct! However, we do want to uninstall it in the order I mentioned above. So Apple Software Update first, Apple Mobile Device Support next, and then Apple Mobile Device Support.
    SAMIA:
Got it, but is the second one to uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support OR Apple pplication Support?
    Rebekah:
The second one is Apple Mobile Device Support.
    Rebekah:
The Application Support will be the last component we uninstall.
    SAMIA:
    Thanks! I'm on it.
    SAMIA:
Done! ll 3 are gone, well 4 with iTunes. Now what?
    Rebekah:
Awesome! Also, I just noticed that I accidentally typed Apple Mobile Device Support twice, I do apologize for any confusion! Now we will remove all instances of Bonjour and then remove all instances of Apple Application Support.
    SAMIA:
There was only 1 instance with Bonjour. I don't know what the instances are for Apple Application Support
    Rebekah:
Yes, Bonjour is often only listed once. Is the Apple Application Support listed at all?
    SAMIA:
    No
    SAMIA:
    Since I removed it
    Rebekah:
Oh, perfect! If it was removed, we should be set!
    Rebekah:
We have removed iTunes and its components now! From here, our next step is to restart the computer. Then once you reboot, you can redownload iTunes from apple.com/itunes
    Rebekah:
That should allow you to download iTunes!
    SAMIA:
Shall I downloaad the latest vesion?
    Rebekah:
You will want to first restart the computer as shown in the article. That will ensure that this process goes smoothly and that everything was removed correctly! Then you can try downloading iTunes again.
    SAMIA:
    Okay, thanks Rebekah!
    Rebekah:
You're very welcome! I'm glad I could help! And of course if you have any issue after the reboot and download, you can always chat us back, as chat is open 24 hours! You will just need to give your case number and the next Advisor would have all my notes!
    SAMIA:
Thanks again for all your help, for I couldn't have managed with out it. Have a nice day!
    Rebekah:
You're very welcome! I know how important iTunes is and I'm glad we could get you on a path to resolution!
    Rebekah:
I hope you have a lovely day!
    Rebekah:
It's been a pleasure speaking with you! Thanks for chatting with us Samia. If you don't have any more questions, select End Chat from the upper left corner of the chat window.
    SAMIA:
    Will do, thanks.
