Installation Failed Bad File Bad Media in an Older MacBook Pro 15" solution

I have two MBP's. One is a very early model, 15". One is a recent 17" model. Each meet the specifications for Leopard. I originally upgraded both computers to Leopard in December and things went well. Over the next month I felt that I needed to reinstall and waited for SuperDuper! to be released supporting OSX 10.5 so that I could back up my system first. I did the clean install on my newer 17" MBP first with no problems but the older 15" continually failed saying that the media was bad (which, obviously it was not).
Now I have seen a number of postings on this site related to this issue and I thought I would put in my two cents. The advice has ranged from cleaning the disk to removing memory and while these may be options perhaps you should consider that the DVD drive is not handling the install properly. Unfortunately or maybe fortunately I discovered early on that some of the early 15" MBP's had some major issues with the DVD drives. In fact, I had to replace mine. I suspected that (as I am sure others may have suggested somewhere) that although the replaced DVD drive for the old MBP seemed to be working ok with burning a disk or two, that it was not up for something like copying an entire OS.
I was correct. The media was not bad. The DVD drive is still a problem, at least at this level of operation.
I used my 17" MBP to perform the install on the older 15" MBP. I connected the 15" by firewire 400 to the 17" MBP and started the 15" up holding the "T" to put it in targeted drive mode while the 17" was already on. Then I inserted the Leopard install disk into the 17" and restarted. I ran the install, selecting the HD of the 15" as the destination. Everything worked perfectly. When it rebooted I could even follow the setup utility (network, .mac etc) using the 17" as a terminal for the 15" hard drive. Shut down each and restart. Perfect.
I hope this helps anyone with a similar problem.
Cheers

That crash appears to be casued by the Facebook plug-in.
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7 and 10.8), make a new Library in that account, import some shots  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • What does bad argument 0x10000003 mean on macbook pro

what does bad argument 0x10000003 mean on macbook pro during boot up after a question mark folder appearing?

At that point, I had taken one of the DIMs out to see if the RAM was the issue. I took it to the Apple Store and they said that the hard drive might be bad, so they wiped everything on the hard drive. After that, I was still experiencing the kernel panics. So another guy looked at it and said that it might be bad RAM. So I called the company and got them to send me more RAM and after inserting the new RAM, I still get kernel panics. I've been saving all the panic reports in a folder on my flash drive. Today I got a total of four. And then I got four the day before that. Mind you, this didn't start happening until I upgraded my system to Mavericks.
I really wish there was a way I could post them all so someone could look at them, cause to be honest, none of the code in it makes any sense to me.

  • How do I transfer a movie file from my iPad to my MacBook Pro?

I recently accidentally deleted all media files that existed in the iTunes Media folder on my MacBook Pro. I have managed to recover almost every file, the only one I have yet to recover is a movie that was redeemed through iTunes after I purchased it as part of a DVD/Blue-Ray/Digital Copy combo pack. It is no where to be found on my hardrive yet the 'phantom' file still extsts within my iTunes library. After checking all of our family's Apple devices (2 iPhones, 5 iPads, 1 older MacBook, & 1 MacBook Pro) I was delighted to discover the movie still exists on my stepson's iPad Mini! Only now I cannot seem to find a way to 'transfer' this movie file back onto my MacBook Pro. I am refusing to sync or update his iPad Mini in fear that I might loose the only copy of the movie I have left! Can someone please help me transfer this file back to my MacBook Pro? Thanks so much!

This talks about iTunes 10, but it should work the same way in iTunes 11. Transferring purchases for an iDevice to your Mac.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2554
It should be File>Devices>Transfer Purchases, I think
You must be using the same Apple ID in iTunes on your Mac that your son is using on the Mini or the movie will not transfer.

I have a MacBook pro that has power issues and will not start but the hardrive is fine.  I do not want to lose all of my files so I was wondering if it's possible to transfer my hardrive from a older Macbook pro to a new one if I were to purchase a new one?  Also, the software is not updated as the computer hasn't worked for about 2 months.
Also, if it is possible to transfer the hardrive, would my iTunes music transfer as well?  It is not saved in the cloud.
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
    These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
    Connect it the new computer
    Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.

Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

iTunes will only import music from your phone that was purchased from the iTunes store.  To transfer music from other sources you have to use 3rd party software, such as PhoneView.

The RAW files I just downloaded on new MacBook Pro are designated as JPEG in the photo info box. Why??

How did you download? Have you been using the Import panel?
How is the pop-up selector for the "Raw+Jpeg" set?
If you are importing raw+jpeg pairs, and you set this to (Use Jpeg as original), then you will see a little J on the thumbnail, otherwise a R.
Or did ou import with Jpeg only?

  • Why has File-Automate-photomerge disappeared from my MacBook Pro? my MacBook Pro CS4?

Why has File-Automate-photomerge disappeared from my MacBook Pro in CS4 but is still on my iMac?

Many thanks for your reply, I found Photomerge.jsx on the iMac, although I couldn't find a Presets/Scripts folder in the Application folder but a search found 4 copies of Photomerge.jsx.
I made a CD of them and inserted it into the MacBook Pro.  I dropped a copy into my Applications folder but when I opened Photoshop CS4 and tried to use it - it wasn't available.  I then dropped it into Photoshop and it works but when I close everything down and re-open Photoshop it is not there.
Had to leave the Photomerge.jsx file/folder on the desktop and re drop into photoshop to open to use???
    Please help me further.

  • Would it be bad if i left my Macbook Pro on the power supply constantly?

I wanted to know if there was any bad that comes out of leaving my Macbook Pro on its power supply and charging 24/7?

    Yes. Do not do that.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
If for some reason you want your MBP to be up and running all the time, plug in the charger but remove the battery. That's how they do it in the Apple Retail Stores. Before removing the battery, run the computer without the charger attached until the battery is about 50% charged. That will maximize its useful life while it remains in storage.

  • Windows Media Player Problems and MacBook Pro

    Hi!
I installed the Windows Media Player 9 for Mac on my MacBook Pro, used it a couple times and now it just won't work. I have deleted it and re-installed it several times and the same thing happens. WMP starts to load and then i get an error message saying the application ended abruptly and other apps and OS have not been affected. I then sent the report to Apple by pressing the "Report..." button. So, now i just want to get rid of the program and all its files. I deleted the WMP folder and it's preference files, but when i initially installed the program, the VISE installer said it installed 510 files to my HD. Really?
    My 2 questions are:
1- what are all the files I have to delete to totally get this application and all its files off my system? I want a clean uninstall as possible.
2- have i done any potential harm to my MacBook Pro? Any diagnostic checks I should run?
    Thanks!
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    1: Check /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/ and /Library/Internet Plugins/
2: probably not, but using OnyX once in a while is a good idea anyways.
