Installation failure... all data gone?

Howdy folks,
I think I might have made a serious mistake, in one way or another. I went to do an upgrade on my MacBook Pro, but I was so excited that I forgot to make a backup copy of anything. The DVD check was at 6% when I decided to skip it, I looked away for a minute, and there was an error message on my screen telling me that the installation could not be completed. No other specific information. When I went to try again, it informed me that I would have to do a complete wipe and reinstall on my disk. So, I guess that means the aborted install corrupted my disk? If so, is there anything I can do to save the data on it? What on earth could cause an error so quickly after the beginning? Is there a key combination I can use to eject the install disk during boot-up? Thanks for any help you can offer.
-Joshua
Edit: I ran a verification on the disk using the Disk Utility, and this is what it gave me:
"Invalid node structure.
Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed"
Is there some way I can transfer a few of my files to an external hard disk or something?

  • All data gone pls help

    Hi,
I had massive problems with my applications on my Blackberry Z10 (STL 100-2) after I once used the flight mode. The battery was warm, some apps did not start. I decided to reboot the phone and it was just stuck on the blackberry logo (not the loading circle). I tried everything, pushing the power button for 10 seconds, battery pull, connecting to the PC with USB with and without the battery, loading on the wall charger for one hour, then taking out the battery for a millisecond, while the phone was charging and then putting the battery back, another battery from a properly working device and and and. The phone was stuck in the loop. If I tried to shut it off, the LED was red for couple of seconds and then it showed the BlackBerry Logo again, for hours. In the beginning of this catastrophe I just left it like that for hours but it got so warm that I did not want to risk the motherboard to melt.
I did not want to factory reset the divice (restore), since I did not have a backup of my stuff (I usually don't connect my phone to computers). The most important were my Remember app notes so the application data (or settings data?)
Finally I decided to do a software update as I actually thought it wouldn't do anything to my data. At least it was written on the official Blackberry website: "Data and settings on your device before you begin updating your software will be on your device when the software update is complete." I visited the BB website and after one hour my phone booted but all data was gone.
I updated the software using the BlackBerry website but it required to start BlackBerry Link. Today I have found an interesting folder: Application Loader (User-AppData (hidden folder)-Local-Research in Motion-Application Loader...). There are two big files, format .bar and .signed. According to the time it was saved at it was was BEFORE the update had been started. I read somewhere that by updating a BlackBerry with BB Link the phone system will be backuped automatically. So it could probably be the backup files. However it is not the usual file format .bbb or .ipd. and these are two files.
Any Ideas what these files are? How can I open them?
My files have to be somewhere. I really need my Remember App notes (they were not synched mit Evernote or something like that). I also never used an SD Card or "Backup pro" or "Password keeper".
The new Software Version is 10.2.1.2977 (OS 10.2.1.3247). I have already tried it with couple of recovery tools like Recuva however it did not work since my phone is not recognized as a flash or physical mass storage device. In my computer it is shown as networkaddress so non of the recovery tools is able to access the internal memory. The mass storage mode is by the way only for the inserted sd cards...
Is there a possibily to recover the notes despite the update (or 10 seconds reset) with help of both .bar and .signed files? Or any other ideas? Please help!!!!
    Many prethanks!!!

there is no way to get native access to the device like you can with a USB drive on a PC with recovery software
if link did a backup, then you should be able to restore from that backup

  • What is the procedure for a clean installation retaining all data?

I'm preparing for Lion and would like t make sure that I install on a clean system.  I've had Time Machine running for a couple of years but being a conservative computer user I would like a secondary backup of all data from my three user accounts on this iMac.  Is there a preferred documented procedure for this task, keeping in mind that Lion is reported to be available only as a download.

Nobody who knows can say.  The published stuff isn't clear on the point, so we'll have to wait for the announcement.
In theory, you may be able to clone your SL installation to an external, download the installer to it, then erase the internal and install it there, but we really don't know yet.
Especially since Snow Leopard, though, clean installs rarely accomplish anything.  Installing just gets a fresh copy of OSX and the default Apple apps, without leaving any detritus behind.  Any number of folks haven't done one in many years, with no ill effects.
Yes, secondary backups are strongly recommended.  See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some suggestions.

  • Updated as new installation 613 to 616 iphone 3GS, the 613 backup is nolonger listed, and all data gone. Anyway to restore 613 with data and update keeping data?

I chose new installation instead of update from 613 to 616. The new installation is missing all the data, and app data, notes, etc. The previous backup is nolonger listed, only new one for 616, anyway to restore 613 with data?

A backup was listed for earlier today, I did a backup before new installation. Once new installation, it did an auto backup of new installation, and only this one is listed.
This matches documentation, it says cannot restore to earlier version from itunes. Do I have to do a restore factory settings to see previous version backup, and restore this earlier version?

  • IPhone 4 - All Data gone after iOS5 update

My coworker has an iPhone 4 but her home computer doesn't have a version of iTunes new enough to update the phone to iOS5. I installed iTunes and backed up the phone on her work computer and when I went to updated it to iOS5, everything was gone. Apps, contacts, pictures... everything! I had this problem with my own iPhone 4, so I restored from backup and all was well. However, when I tried with hers, it says there was an error (-50) and asks me to continue the restore and I say yes, but nothing.
There are 4 backups in my backup folder, but even when I used iPhone Backup Restore, it says there is no data in the backup. Are my backups corrupted? Is there any way to recover data?

Apps and music are not part of the backup process. They should already exist in the iTunes library of the machine it's being updated from and are synced back at the end of the update process.  Unfortunately, since the update was done on a different machine, that didn't happen.
If your co-worker didn't have a late enough version of iTunes to update the phone, that also means she won't even be able to sync the phone with her computer.
Why doesn't she just download the current iTunes? Then she can sync her stuff back. Unless, that is, she has a Mac running a version of Mac OS X older than 10.5...

  • Ipod 2 : All data lost after battery empty, Apple logo! *** is this now!?

I am very upset, i took me countless hours to set up and customize my new ipad 2. Finally i was done, playing "fishfarm" on it, when i noticed the battery was down to 4%. I went to bed, thinking, well the ipad will go to sleep mode soon enough since it was so low on battery power.
Then the shock when i woke up!!! I wanted to charge my ipad, when i noticed the frigging Apple Logo! I assumed the worse when i had to connect it to itunes.
Yes, ALL DATA GONE!! Everything, all apps, data, settings, games, it went back to "out of box" mode. I recently upgraded to new software 4.3.3
This is unacceptable, *** is wrong, did they rush to launch the new ipad when its mainboard wasnt ready? This clearly looks like a major problem, since i dont seem to be the only one having it.
Apple needs to release a fix ASAP! This doesnt happen with Microsoft software, i never lost all my data at once when working with a MS OS.
Anyone else with this problem? Luckily i ordered 2 ipads 2 so when i will pick up the other one on Monday, i am sending this one straight back.

Countless hours? There are only 24 hours in a day.
Backing up the iPad is as simple as attaching the cable to the iPad and your computer and telling the iTunes app on your computer to make a backup. It takes about 5 minutes usually. You should always backup important data on all computer devices.
The iPad 2 was not rushed to market. There is nothing wrong with the iPad 2's logicboard. Mine has worked perfectly from day one over a month ago.
But when a factory assembles millions of electronic devices with dozens of parts from different sources, there may occasionally be a bad one. Call Apple Care and have them walk you through the steps to determine if yours is a lemon or you personally have made a mistake with it, aside from failing to back it up.

  • Delete Exchange Account: All Data is Gone. How to avoid?

    Hi all
I'm trying to delete an Exchange account from my iPhone (I change jobs). When doing so, all data is gone: Mail (ok, of course), calendar (I've got lots of private entries there), and contacts (same here).
Is there a way to avoid deletion of this data when deleting an exchange account?
(I had the same problem years ago with a cancelled MobileMe test account: all data was gone. I thought it was a bug then. But no, looks they consider it a feature. Unbelievable...)
    Regards & thanks
    R.

Only way is to back up all the data from your office PC BEFORE you leave the job.
The appointments and contact etc. do not live on your phone, they live on your Exchange server.

  • Lost all data in computer failure.  How do I recover Elements 10 software

I purchased downloaded Elements 10 within the past year.  Recently had major failure in primary hard drive on my computer and lost all data.  I have reinstalled Photoshop from disks, but do not have disk for Elements.  I downloaded it as a trial program and then paid to activate it after the 30-day trial period.  My question is how can I download the program again without paying the full cost again?

    Moved to Photoshop Elements
If you purchased it from the Adobe Online store, you should be able redownload the software from your account. Then you should back it up to an external drive or to DVDs so that you can restore it again if you need to.

Mac OS X Boot failure... I cant Repair HDD with OS Disk,Shows Repair Failed. I cant backup my files from HDD. Backup failed. But I need my all datas from HDD. I dont want to format. Cant enter safemode also. anything else..
I installed XP @Bootcamp, I cant access my Mac HDD via XP..
What I do??? Please help me.. please...

You can try DiskWarrior (about $100).
If that doesn't work, and if you have no backups at all, you might need to send your hard drive to Drive Savers or a similar service. It will cost a lot of money to get the data back, I'm sorry to say.

  • Adobe forms survey became blank and all data is gone

We used Adobe forms central to create a survey.  We received approximately 105 responses, at which point I saved a copy of the responses in a pdf form to share with our team.  We later logged in to Adobe forms to see if any other respondents had completed the survey and discovered the entire form was blank.  All text, questions, and options were gone.  The only thing remaining was the image in the header.  While Adobe still reported 105 responses all data was gone.  Any help retrieving the data and returning the survey text would be greatly appreciated!

Please share the form with me ([email protected]) as a co-author. I will see if I can help.

  • I have updated my iphone and all  data have gone including photos contacts and notes .is there any solution? I am about to syncope!

I have updated my iphone4 and all  data have gone including photos contacts and notes .is there any solution?

All data that was on your iPhone should be on your computer.
All photos that were transferred to your iPhone from your computer should remain on your computer and can be retransferred. Photos/videos captured by the iPhone can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera - especially before installing an iOS update. Re-transfer these photos from your computer as with any other photos available on your computer.
Contacts and notes are designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer, and there are some free email accounts that support syncing contacts and notes over the air.
