Installation failure - macbook now not working

Hi,  Hoping you can help!!
I have a macbook from 2008. I am not very computer literate but decided yesterday to update my software and download Yosemite OS X overnight. This morning I woke up and my computer advised that 'OSX could not be installed on your computer. File system verify or repair failed. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.'
There are very few  options showing on my screen that I have access to:
On  the top tool bar there is an apple icon that gives me the following options:
1) startup disk - I click on this and it gives me the option ' select the system you want to use to start up your computer.' The only option is the Macintosh HD OS X 10.6.8 - When this is highlighted the option is then to restart and the message ' you can't change the start up disk to the selected disk. Startup disk could not gather enough information on the selected disk.' There are no other system options!!!
2) restart
So . . . I clicked restart
The computer initially states ' installing on "Macintosh HD"about 22 minutes remaining.' Then the same thing happened ( 'OSX could not be installed  on your computer. File system verify or repair failed. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.') ( I have tried this four times now).
3) shut down
So I clicked on shut down and then restarted . . . same thing happened ( I have tried this three times now)
Next to the apple icon is the startup disk option. When this is clicked:
1) About startup disk ( Version 13(404)
2) Shutdown - ' you can't change the start up disk to the selected disk. Startup disk could not gather enough information on the selected disk.'
3) Quit Startup Disk -  'OSX could not be installed  on your computer. File system verify or repair failed. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.'  Restart
I cannot access my main menu to uninstall, it's a complete catch 22. The OS X progam did not install correctly but I am unable to uninstall it or use a different software. All I can do is continue to restart and the same thing happens over and over

I think you're being somewhat unfair.  The repair guy can only give a diagnosis from the information he has available at the time, which was a completely dead screen. The screen springing back to life is new information he didn't have.
I can't comment on the $115 charge. As with car repairs, it's always cheaper to do your own, but laptops are at least 10 times more difficult to repair than desktops. I'm happy to dive inside a desktop computer but I've always left laptops to the professionals.  I'll also add that I always buy the extended warranty for a laptop.

    @ BDAqua > I tried your suggestion but no luck. holding opt+command just gave me a blue screen and it rebotted, pushing the disk out of the drive. Yes, the macbook has 1 gb of ram. I realize that the min req. call for 2 gb of ram so i've got an order in for another dimm to put into the machine. Thanks for your suggestions.
    @ a_brody > Yes. The machine was plugged into a power source. The disk promts you to do that and i recall aspect this form other installs. Thanks for the reminder tho! ( btw your second post is like greek to me man!) 
    @ Kuncklesmac > You're right about Snow Leopard being an upgrade from Leopard. I'm aware of this. And yes previously i've been told by Apple that I needed the Box Set (not the family pack.  i am using the family pack for OS Snow Leopard) to upgrade my 10.4.11 mac - they never mentioned adding ram but i figured that out on my own and an apple specialist recommended it when i purchased Snow Leopard and confirmed that I coul duse the Snow Leopard to upgarde from Tiger (10.4.11). I've also read extensively (as i said above) that it isn't necessary (always) to buy the box set. Several 10.4.11 users report having upgraded using the Snow Leopard upgrade disk only (not the Box Set) without trouble on intel macs (also see the apple link i posted). So i'm just ondering how they did it and i cannot.

    Each version of Extension Manager only installs/manages extensions for the same suite of products. EM CS6 only installs extensions for DW CS6. To install extensions for DW CS5, you should launch EM CS5 to install it. Note that you have to update EM CS5 to 5.0.3 before you launch EM CS5 in Mac 10.8, otherwise EM CS5 will crash due to Mac API change. You can use Adobe Application Manager to update EM CS5 or download and run http://download.macromedia.com/pub/dw_exchange/extension_manager/mac/AdobeExtensionManager _5_0_3_mul_AdobeUpdate.dmg which can be found at http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/.

  • NVIDIA Tools now not working with PS CC, is there any other add-on besides NVIDIA that will open .DDS files in photoshop?

    I had no problems with CS6 PS, but since I upgraded to PS CC, NVIDIA Tools is now not working and crashes when I try to reinstall the plug-in into PS CC. I checked NVIDIA's forums and found ZIP from them about this problem. So I am asking in here, is there another plug-in that will open .DDS files in PS? I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 for the OS, and I know the PS CC is 32 bit. Until I can resolve this issue, I am unable to do repaints of PMDG aircraft for my VA. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    I also reccomend you to install the bbswitch package which disables NVIDIA discrete graphics card when isn't used.

    You will need to install the printer on your Mac
    Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Print & Fax
    Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list
    Wait for your printer to appear in the next box, then click it to highlight it
    Click Add at the lower right
    Be sure to select the correct printer when you try to print as you will see your printer listed twice. Good idea to make the printer now installed on your Mac the default printer so you do not have to choose which printer to use each time you want to print.
    You can also go into Print & Fax, select the printer associated with the Time Capsule and click the - (minus) button if you want to delete that location.

    sounds like your phone was hacked to work with your carrier.  Now it is relocked to the rightful carrier.  It cannot be reactivated without a SIM from that carrier.

    And it should go to your user folder/Library/ColorSync/Profiles
    if you have one already you can rename either one ..
    and then go to system preferences - displays - color to select the profile .
    you will get rid of the blue tint while keeping correct color and gamma
    This is for the newer 2010 MBP's altho if same display was used might also give good results in the previous models as well . .
