I've got a problem with installing Final Cut Express HD (v. 3.5)
I can install the program with all features - but it doesen´t run!
After starting the program it shows the start windows and end without any coment!
I hope anybody can help me!!!

Determining Academic Version of FCE HD 3.0

First I want to compliment you on this informative forum.
After reading through about 30 pages of posts with answers, I have learned that the copy of FCE HD (ver. 3.0) that I found “un-opened” at my school will not work on my one-year-old 24-inch iMac (2.66 GhZ Intel Core 2 Duo; 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3), which is running Snow Leopard (10.6.3). So I plan to purchase FCE 4.
Here are my questions:
How can I determine whether or not this is an academic version with not upgrade path or a full commercial version for which I can purchase the upgrade to FCE 4? (The install DVD is labeled Final Cut Express HD Install: Version 3.0; and the labels with serial numbers at the bottom of the “Installing Your Software” pamphlet say FINAL CUT EXPRESS HD RETAIL).
Will I be able to use the 2 LiveType Data discs from this older version with the newer version of LiveType that will come with FCE 4?
Since the iMac has only one Firewire port, which will be in use to capture video from my Canon GL2, what will be my best strategy for managing projects; archived content; and my scratch disk needs? I was hoping to keep everything on an external drive, but this will need to be a USB drive. I have about 520 GB available on my 640 GB drive.

The academic should have a label on the box (same for Non For Resale version-NFR).

Yes. Run the livetype install from the FCE 3.0 disk. The current LT app is the same as this one and you'll get the full content.

You can run FCE and capture on the internal but it's far better to use a dedicated external for video storage. You can daisychain the camcorder to the firewire on the external. Some Canon cameras have problem with daisychaining. If, so, capture on the internal and move capture files to the external.

Thanks Tom. I guess I should have asked if I should go HD. I mainly video tape my 2 daughters soccer games and have a High School trip to England for soccer. How difficult is it to switch to HD for SD? I have read some of the previous posts and it does not seem as intuitive as I thought. I do basic action editing and do not plan on getting a HD burner until the prices drop. I need a new camcorder and just thought it was time to go HD! Thanks for any suggestions. By the way, if anyone has had a great experience with any new camcorder I would love to hear reccomendations.

Cannot combine files in Reader 9 Standard

I'm using the standard Adobe Reader 9, just upgraded. Even in Adobe 8, there was no option for combining or merging files. These were files that I scanned in which I thought the computer had basically scanned them in as PDF files because they automatically went right to PDF/Adobe. Now, I can view them all but there are certain restrictions on them which is where the problem may be and I seem to have no control over these restrictions. All I want to do is combine a couple of "simple" files so they are not all separate pages. The maximum I wanted to do was 8 pages...Any help would be soooo appreciated!

You can merge pdf documents with a free third party product like PDFTK Builder.

Error due MSVCR80.dll when trying to install Wirel...

A search of Nokia discussion threads and elsewhere on the web shows that a range of problems are being caused by MSVCR80.dll but there appear to be no definitive solutions.
I have a Nokia6120Classic. When I run the CD and select to install the Phone component of Wireless Presenter I get the following message:
Executable 'D:\fscommand\WirelessPresenter.exe' had the following unrecoverable error: Couldn't find library MSCVR80.dll (required by C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\msohevi.dll) Please enure that it is installed.
Any attempt to install the Speech Application Term Bank gives rise to the same error.
There have been no problems installing other software applications (including the PC component of Wireless Presenter).
Based on what I have seen in other threads that I have read the system32 folder should(?) hold the dll. It is not in the folder. A search shows that the dll is present elsewhere in my installation of XP Ver 5.1 Service Pack 3. Placing a copy of MSVCR80.dll in system32 folder simply gave rise to a run time error when trying to complete the instal.
I have Nokia PC Suite Version 7.0.7.0 installed. Each element of PC Suite that I have used seems to be working OK.
Can anyone advise what I need to do to get Wireless Presenter working?

Sometimes these have to registered into Windows. If you have dropped the dll into the system32 folder, try this:
Click START -> RUN
In the dialog box, type:
regserv32 MSVCR80.dll
and then hit ENTER. You should get a confirmation of a successful registration.
Now try running the Wireless Presenter installation CD.

Do we need to install SQL in UCCX standalone server

I have a installation for UCCX ver 7.0.2 & Quality Manager 2.7.3
I have installed the UCCX application which has its default SQL installed along with the CRS application installtion.
Now I have also installed Quality Manager 2.7.3 with SQL 2005.
I followed the guide for installation, I get sync error when logined to QM desktop Administration.
I feel the Database of QM is not syned with UCCX.
Do we have to install SQL separately on the UCCX server. Please advice & how to go further.
Highly appreciate if someone shares his expertise in this.

UCCX has SQL already installed, and it uses Windows Authentication by default.
This means you have to follow the instruction manuals for AQM:
1) Create a local user account on both the AQM and UCCX server with the same username and password
2) On the UCCX server, grant the user access to the SQL DB
3) On the AQM server, set the Sync service to run as the new user
It's in the install guide, in the 'Setting Up NT Authentication for the Cisco Unified CC Database' section. Try following that and post back if you have further issues..

Using Final Cut Express and Network accounts

I am having problems launching Final Cut Express when opening the program logged into a network account.
It works fine when i am logged into administrator, but when i am in another account it will not launch

My general experience is that FCE either doesn't start or doesn't run properly unless you are logged in under an administrator account.
Tom Wolsky advised one time that after installation FCE had to be run once from an administrator account and afterward it would run from regular accounts. That hasn't worked in my experience.
As far as network accounts are concerned, are you using an xServe or a Mac with OSX Server installed, and workgroup manager? FCE will need to be installed on the local machine, not the server, and the network accounts won't necessarily work with FCE.

Cannot Install 10.6.7 On Imac 2006 Build 9L31a

I am trying to install Snow leapard 10.6.7 on my Imac 2006 Build 9L31a & when I get to the install part it just pops up cannot be installed on this mac. I check the log and this is what comes up.

I would like to clarify what you're exactly doing. Are you inserting and booting from a Snow Leopard Installation disc and you are unable to continue? The reason is ask is that I'm not sure if the Snow Leopard Installation disk contains ver. 10.6.7. At the risk of sounding silly, or are you trying to directly install the 10.6.7 Upgrade file from the Apple support site to your computer, which is currently running 10.5.8, which is what the LOG Report you provided seems to indicate. If so, you cannot do this. You would need to first purchase and install from the Snow Leopard Installation Disk. THEN run the 10.6.7 Upgrade.

I encountered the exact same error when making a call to getTimeInMillis on a Calendar object. As it turned out, the javac compiler was version 1.4.1._05 while the java command was invoking a jre from an oracle installation which was ver 1.3. Thanks to jshell for his help!! A "java -version" revealed the culprit!

App fails to compile with mxmlc command-line but builds fine with flash builder IDE.

i have this flex app (its a flex project created from flash builder ), it compiles fine when i build it from IDE.
it fails to compile when i do it from command line through mxmlc.
i am invoking the mxmlc at the location <flash-builder-installation>\sdks\<flex-ver>\bin\
the mxml file is test.mxml
i am invoking like the following
c:\<bin>\mxmlc test.mxml
i dont have any dependency on any of custom swc file.
i am getting the following type errors when i compile it from my .as file

Is this a AIR app or a mobile app? If you are building AIR app for desktop then you can use amxmlc instead of mxmlc.
If its a mobile app then use mxmlc +configname=airmobile

Can I delete the "Previous System" folder ?

Hi all experts,
My system has been having problem after i installed the Adobe software but still useable. All software remains okay except to startup Adobe, it takes unusually long.
Then one unfortunate day while watching YouTube it hanged & doing a force quit won't help as the beach ball keeps on rotating endlessly. So I turn off the power. After that it cannot start-up anymore.
The salesman asked me to start up using the disc I originally have and do an "Archieved Re-installation" and select saved all the settings. He said I have to do that so that all my installed software remains.
Because my installation disc in Ver OS 10.5.4 after installation, it is still very slow. After updating it to 10.5.8, it now becomes back to original but the following problem remains:
a) starting Adobe programs remains slow, how do I overcome this problem ?
b) how come I still have Adobe under the application ? Can I move it to trash & reinstall again ?
c) can I delete the folder "Previous Systems" ? (because it eats up a lot of my HD space)

Mine is a 24" iMac with 4GB RAM, 2.8GHz & 256MB of dedicated VRAM. When I say it takes a long time, I was referring to something like 3 to 5 mins to start up each of the applications.
But the funny thing is once it started up & I quit the application and then launched it again, it will take only 15 to 30 seconds. This applies to all the applications in the CS4 Suite.
But if I shut down the whole system, it again took about 3 to 5 mins to launch the application again on the first time after shutting down the whole Mac. Again if I quit & re-launch, it only take 15 to 30 secs. This applies to all application in the CS4 Suite.
For your info, other application like Final Cut, iMovie, iPhoto ... etc remained okay & unaffected.
b) You can move the CS4 applications to the trash but you'll never find all the other installed pieces. I would just install fresh over them.

Co-existance mode with OpenSSO and Federation

This is just a general question. I have just upgraded to express build 8 of OpenSSO from my existing 7.1 legacy mode Access Manager. I am staying in legacy mode because of my Communications Express mail client and am waiting until I upgrade to convergence before I make the full switch to OpenSSO realm mode.
The question is: do I lose anything in the federation models in my co-existing world? Does all the SAML 2.0 and the new shibbleth stuff work in co-existance mode or do I need to de-couple my Communications Express?

Only Oracle 8 supports multiple homes.
I would ask why did you put the Developer 1.5 and 2.1 under
different Oracle Homes. They should co-exist just fine under the
same home. I have Developer 1.3.2, 2.1, and 6 all installed
under the same Oracle Home with no co-existence problems.

Final Cut and Network users

I've recently installed Final Cut Express on about 40 iMacs. These imacs authenticate with windows Active Directory, and that is all. When a authenticated user runs FCE, it bounces thinks about loading - even get the splash screen. It asked you to continue, and then it just closes.
I've read around a few threads, and they suggest running it first as an administrator. I thought this solved the issue, as I ran FCE as an administrator, and then ran it as a standard user and it worked fine.... for the first time. After closing FCE, and relaunching it for a second time, i'm back to square one - it doesn't open.
Another thread suggested using a preference manager to trash the FCE preference files. If I use this trash the preferences every time I wish to open FCE, it works. However, I'm not really happy with this solution, relying on students to trash the preferences..... It should just work out of the box anyway!
I've changed the permissions on the library -> application support -> final cut express folder, AND the library -> preferences folder so that everyone has read and write access. (Thought it was worth a try). Still doesn't work.
I'm vastly running out of ideas and patience.
Has anyone got any suggestions?

When Final Cut Express starts, it polls the network to see if there is any other copy of FCE already running on another Mac in the network and using the same serial number. If it finds a match, it won't start on the 2nd machine. If you installed FCE on your 40 iMacs with the same serial number, that would explain the behavior.
Also, after installation, FCE does need to be run at least once in same local admin account it was installed in before it is run in any other account (admin, user, guest, etc) on the Mac.
There can also be issues when user accounts are centrally managed (i.e with AD or Workgroup Manager) and the user logs on as a network user as opposed to a local user on the Mac workstation. This is not just an FCE issue, this has cropped up many times with many apps.
If you are a volume customer of Apple (educational institution, enterprise, government etc), you should contact your Apple Account Exec and/or Systems Engineer for assistance with this.
