Installation freezes after a successful download of OS X 10.5.2 Update

Hi. I can't find a topic which is similar enough to my problem to consult.
I have tried on several occasions to download the new update using Software Update. It claims to be downloaded, then asks me to restart. After it begins the restart process, it freezes of the "configurating volume" screen - I have done this a couple of times and and left it alone for an hour or so - no progress is made.
I need assistance - I don't want to use the stand-alone download site - I only have dial-up, and that version of the update would take over a day and a half to download.
Thank you.

I do NOT have Software Update automatically check for updates on principle. It is probably OK for home users who have no complications but I prefer to retain control of when or if Software Update is used.
Usually when I run it I allow small-sized updates to be installed by unchecking other larger updates.
I have 4 drives to update so it's more efficient to download the standalone updates even though they are sometimes larger. I copy the original downloads to each drive then startup from each drive in turn and apply the downloads. The only precaution is to ensure that where it matters the updates are applied in the recommended order. I have had no problems with any Apple update when I've used this procedure.
Some people recommend starting in safe mode before applying any update. I haven't done this but it's probably a good idea - another reason for not allowing Software Update to operate automatically. It's also wise to run Disk Utility permissions repair before and after applying updates.
With many of us using different ISP's and having variable quality links I guess it's inevitable that some downloads will be corrupted and cause us problems. I'm fortunate to have never had this problem in the 20 or so years of using Macs.

After my successful download of iTunes 64 bit,I continue to get an error message that it's missing Apple Application Support. What am I doing wrong? I've installed it and uninstalled it several times already, but each time I get that error message...

I've been getting timed out for 2 days now, what finally worked for me was not plugging the phone into the computer and just doing the update through my wifi, worked perfectly, took less than 15 minutes

  • Firefox does not delete the .part file from my download folder after a successful download

First off, I'm on a MacBook Pro, running 10.6.4 and FF3.6.12
I've recently noticed that on occasion Firefox does not seem to delete the .part file associated with a successful download. The .part file (with a name consisting of a string of random characters followed by a .part extension) is visible in my Download folder stack, although not visible in the actual folder view. I cannot drag this file from the stack to the trash.
The real problem stems from the fact that this seems to create a directory error on my hard drive. Were I to run Disk Utility (which I will have to do... again!), it would return with an error saying something like "incorrect block length", requiring me to boot up from my install disk and repair the drive.
Is this maybe a bug? Is there something I might be doing wrong? Could an extension like AdBlock be messing up my downloads?

It seems that FireFox leaves those partial download files if for any reason they get interrupted. It's possible to resume the download through various uninteresting means, but if you're like me, it gets filled up with files that I intentionally did not complete downloading.
If you're terminal-savvy, you can set up a script that cleans up old .part files. Here's what I've set in my crontab:
    0 * * * * /usr/bin/find ~/Downloads/*.part -atime +1 -exec rm {} \; &> /dev/null
It will delete any files in my downloads folder that are at least 1 day old.
To install this in your crontab, launch terminal and type "crontab -e"
This will bring up a text editor, probably vi. You'll see a bunch of ~'s down the left side. Type "i" to go into "insert" mode. The bottom left will say "-- INSERT --"
Copy and paste (or type) the line of code I have above.
Hit enter just to make sure you have a newline at the end.
Hit "Escape" to exit the insert mode.
Hit Shift-Z Shift-Z (that's Shift-Z twice) to exit the editor.
You should see a status message "crontab: installing new crontab"
If you type "crontab -l" you should see your newly installed crontab.
At the top of the next hour, any .part files that are more than a day old should be deleted, and this should continue forever.

  • Installer freezes after download is done. Instantly goes into not responding when I try.

Instantly says not responding the second I try to run it. I deleted the install file and tried to re-download, but I get the same problem. I don't know if it helps at all, but this is the error it was giving me in console when I would try to run it and it would stop responding.

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Imovie HD suddenly jumps/skips/freezes after many successful changes

    1.8 GHz G5, OSX 10.3.9, Imovie HD 5.0.2, Qt 7.0.4
I have a one hour video which is almost finished. But, after making many successful changes I suddenly find that any new change will cause the movie to get stuck on one frame, and then jump to another futher down. Sometimes the sound will move correctly, but the picture on my screen does not change. When this happens, the start/stop button on the screen does not respond to commands, and sometimes the pinwheel will appear.
I have corrected the permissions, done the drive repair, done the P/Q P ram clearing function, and Apple had me trash the Imovie Plist and cache to no avail. I had this problem once before with the Imovie that came before Imovie HD and I changed the hard drive at that time, so the drive is ok and I also get the same result when i use the external drive.
This only happens one hour videos with many changes. I have 1.5 Gb of memory. could some of the memory chips be defective? your help will be appreciated.

    Hello, taronger,
You have 1.5 GB memory? You mean hard disk space? That is not enough for iMovie to properly operate. You need at least 15-20GB free space.
I see that you are using an external drive as well. It needs a good amount of free space also.
That said, I notice the same jerking, stuttering of iMovie playback whenever I have a lot of transitions or effects, or when my movie exceeds about 1hr 20min. I have found by experience that my burned DVD will be fine. So, I just manually move the playhead to be sure the change took effect, and continue on with making my movie with all its transitions and effects. If I want to use this version to burn to DVD, I create my chapter markers and then save my completed iMovie. I open iDVD, create my project and drop my movie into it. I save it as a disk image, and if that is ok, I know it will burn fine.
Sometimes I want chapter markers right on my transitions, so in that case, or if I want to play the movie through first before creating my DVD, I will save iMovie as a QuickTime Full Quality movie. (You must have enough free space to do this). I then open a new iMovie project and import the quicktime version of my movie. I create my chapter markers and use this movie to drop into iDVD and burn my DVD.
I also use the QT version to share back to my camcorder, as I have found that the jumpy/skipping one will not share smoothly.
If your iMovie looks ok when you manually move the playhead, you might try one of these methods to get a good burned DVD.

  • HELP! I have purchased Dreamweaver CS4 and the installer freezes after 80-90% as it is 'checking system profiles'

I downloaded the trail version, and had the same problem and never got it to work. Like an idiot I thought if I bought it I would get a better version to download but I am having the same problem. I am frustrated hurt and angry the Adobe has not been able to solve this problem because I have googled this issue and it seems that I am not the only one that has had this problem. Please anyone help me. I have tried everything that they have told me and it is not working and I have a project due monday.

I did what you told me and looked in the library log to see what is going on as it check system profiles. It appears to be stuck inside a loop. The following loop message appears over and over again. Any suggestions?

  • How do I get trial CS5 running after a successful download?

I am running on a Mac Version 10.6 and trying to get the trial version of InDesign CS5 running. On my Mac desktop is an Icon which looks like a CD. I do not know how to proceed to open InDesign

TYpically the installers need to be decompressed (but maybe that was done automatically). You need to double-click the icon and run the installer.

I recently updated my iTunes which was previously operating very well. After I successfully downloaded and installed the update, the program no longer opens either from the desktop or the task bar. I am using Windows 7. I set the pop-up blocker to always allow pop-ups from Apple and the compatability shows compatable with Windows 7. Any Suggestions for how I can get back in business?

Are you downloading iTunes form an Apple website or somewhere else? If the answer is somewhere else, try downloading it from Apple. Click on iTunes in the black menu bar above and go from there.
