Installation from a DVD on laptop without DVD drive

I purchased Acrobat XI Pro on a DVD but my new laptop does not have a DVD drive. Do I need to obtain a DVD drive or can I copy the software to a thumb drive or install from another computer on my home network that does have a DVD drive?

You can download it and install it.  Acrobat XI, X - http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html

  • Installation from external DVD drive

I have an older Powermac G4 that had a DVD-RAM drive and I replaced it with a high-speed Toshiba CD-RW drive. Is there a way to install Tiger from the DVD via an external drive or do I have to buy the CD's?

Assuming this Mac has a Firewire Port or Ports and you have an external Firewire DVD drive and your Mac and the external DVD drive supports booting the computer from the external DVD drive, the answer is yes.
If not, you need to use Apple's Media Exchange Program and exchange the Tiger DVD media for CD media or if you have access to another Mac with a DVD drive and both Macs support Firewire Target Disk mode, you can connect the two Macs via Firewire Target Disk mode and install Tiger on your PowerMac G4 from the Mac with a DVD drive.

  • Problem installing OSX 10.4 from Firewire DVD drive

Hi, I'd be very grateful if anyone can help... I've been trying to install OSX 10.4 from DVD loaded in an external Firewire Lacie DVD drive and haven't been successful yet. I have tried instructing startup from the DVD in System Preferences, holding Option on startup and selecting the DVD and also holding 't' on startup, which I was informed forced startup from an external Firewire device (this resulted in a large Firewire logo floating round the screen but after 10 minutes or so hadn't progressed into full startup). Having read some bits of info found on Apple support I can see there is some issue about installing OSX 10.4 from a DVD drive other than an internal Apple drive (although I can't see any explanation why). Could someone please let me know if there is another way of doing this? – I mainly want to get 10.4 installed because I want to get a new ipod which requires 10.4 rather than 10.3. Thanks very much, Sam

Some external DVD drives support startup. Some do not.
Holding down the T key at startup makes the Mac go into FireWire Target Disk Mode. It will not help you start up from the DVD drive.
If you have another Mac with FireWire and a DVD drive, you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode to mount your Mac's hard drive on the other Mac's desktop. Then, you can use that other Mac to startup from the DVD and run the installer, pointing to your Mac's hard drive for the installation.

I don't know of any other way, if the external DVD drive does not support start up.

  • Installation of Master Collection CS3 (disc version for Windows)  on a laptop without optical drive

Installation of Master Collection CS3 (disc version for Windows) -  is there any possibility of installing my legitimately purchased MC-CS3 on a new laptop without optical drive? Perhaps through a download link or will tranfering all Adobe files from my old to my new computer do the trick as well? Or do I necessarily have to buy an external optical drive? Thank you for answering.

No need to buy an optical drive and don't try transferring, it rarely works.
Download the installer from Download CS3 products
Install then enter your serial number to license it.

  • Satellite C655D-S5303 will not boot from cd/dvd drive

I have already set the boot order in the BIOS to boot from cd/dvd drive first and it still goes straight to the HDD and starts Windows 7. I searched for this problem and found some people saying to switch it to CSM boot or disable secure boot but none of these options are available in the BIOS. I have it set to normal boot instead of fast so thats not the problem. Can anyone help me here? I am trying to reformat and reinstall Windows 7. I know the Windows 7 installation disk I have is good because I have used it in another computer and the cd/dvd drive works fine. I just can't get it to boot from the cd/dvd drive before the HDD.

Try setting the HDD to lowest boot priority. See Dave's solution in this message.
It's certainly easier to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. All the drivers and utilities are preinstalled in the proper order. Windows is preactivated.
If you failed to burn recovery discs, you can obtain recovery media from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here

  • Boot from 1394 DVD drive?

Can I do a clean install of Win7 from a DVD drive connected to the firewire port? Will the laptop boot from that drive?  I'm installing an unformatted SSD to replace my hard drive. Can the firewire port be considered either ATAPI 0 or ATAPI 1 in the BIOS?

    Hello,
I do not think I have ever seen a ThinkPad boot from its FireWire (IEEE-1394) port.  On the other hand, support for booting from an external USB CD or DVD drive is fairly standard these days.

  • How do I import video from my dvd drive?

I made a video in an older version of iMovie sometime ago. I would now like to import that video again into iMovie to update it. I cannot figure out how to add the clips to my events from the DVD drive. I can't believe there is not a simple way to do this, although I may be too simple to figure it out!
    Jerry

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Compaq M2000Z - installing XP from CD/DVD Drive

My daughters M2000Z stopped working after a reboot last evening.  It seeemed to be having some USB issues before this problem.  So I rebooted it and it would not come up, even in Safe Mode.  Hard Drive starts and have booted it from the CD Drive with some DOS-Like OS's and I'm able to run a chkdsk on the hard drive.
However, when I try to use a copy of XP Pro I have and boot from the CD the system starts and goes through all the processes of setting up.  However it stops at the "Setup is starting Windows".    I've done a lot of searching on the net and it seems to this has something to do with Windows not loading or recognizing the right drivers or there being a bios problem.  Whichever it is, given that I can't get the system to load I have no way to update the bios or drivers.
Should I just order the reimage CD's and go from there?  1) Are there other alternatives  2) Will the reimage disks work?
    Thanks.

  • Ibook g3 M2453 boot from external DVD drive

    Hi, I'm Simon from Germany.
I have an iBook M2453 Mac OS X and a lot of dvds.
But the iBook has no DVD drive. So I bought an external DVD drive. But no matter what I do during boot (press the C key or alt)
I can not boot from external DVD drive.
    Please help me
    Thank you.
    Simon.
PS: I have translated the text using Google translate

    Hi Simon,
the iBook is able to boot from USB, but this is not expected behaviour and not supported by Apple.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20554
There are some external enclosures that do the trick.
But only when you press ALT after Power on. (Select a startup volume via the Startup Manager)
External enclosures with Prolific PL-3507 chipset (Firewire/USB Combo)
You will find them on Ebay Germany
    I have a Delock IDE>USB 2.0 enclosure for 2,5" HDs
    http://www.delock.com/produkte/gruppen/Geh%C3%A4use/Delock_25_external_enclosure _USB20_42365.html?setLanguage=EN
    that works also.
    Hallo Simon,

  • Installation from USB DVD

    Hi,
I have problem with build in DVD drive in my iMac computer. I would like
to update the OS to a new Tiger but drive does not read installation DVD disk.
I was trying to connect using USB DVD drive. I can start installation process but after computer restart it uses old startup disk. Is it possible to update the system using USB DVD drive and if yes how to do this.
    Thank you david

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Shalom, and Shannah Tovah (well I should say Gregorian Calendar Shannah Tovah)!
No this is not possible. Mac OS X will boot off Firewire drives only.
    See this article:
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n58606
Your Powerbook G4 will boot off Firewire drives.
There is also a CD Media Exchange on http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/ which I don't know if it is available in Israel, but see if it is by looking at the equivalent link on Apple's website. I couldn't find it here from the U.S.

  • Installation from atapi dvd W DH16W1P asking for drivers

The machine apparently boots correctly from the DVD/CD device, but instead of reporting that the CD is found and asking whether to check the media, it wants to know the device type. IF CDROM is entered it wants a driver disk or one of the available drivers. This is a bit confusing to me since it just read the CD to boot (but then I am easily confused).
Is there a workaround short of building a device disk?
Can you build a device disk on a USB flashdrive? (This box has no floppies).
I'll happily read FAQs already available if anyone has a suggestion on narrowing my search.
My current probable workaround is building a USB linux install and just booting from that instead of installing on this machine, but I'd sort of like to erase my confusion and possibly save some others the problem as well.
    Regards,
